Title: Super Nintendo/Super Famicom Games Discussion and Favorites
Post by: oldgamerz on September 20, 2019, 07:11:07 pm
I just searched the forum and I saw, that even though many of you have SNES games in your possession we never had a dedicated thread for the Super Nintendo/Super Famicom console.

Personally I know almost nothing about the games for this device, All I know is everyone seems to collect for it yet none seem to  talk about it's games or their quality. or Maybe I am not looking in the right places?

Even After viewing a few classic game room reviews I still feel that this system has a lot of low quality games in my opinion. especially the sports games like NHL Stanley Cup and NFL or Madden something I forgot. that have graphics that just watching the videos from the CGR Undertow those speciffic graphics in the videos made me sick as the guy felt the same way,

I never was interested in Mario games in the past, but  I do like"The Legend Of Zelda: A Link To The Past"
I used to own a lot of fun Super Nintendo games like Mortal Kombat 1, NBA JAM. But I later found out that all my favorite Super Nintendo games except for Doom, are also on the Sega Genesis

1: Doom for the Super Nintendo
2: NBA Jam for the Super Nintendo

I plan on getting Super Mario world and Super Mario Kart, but any information about Super Nintendo games I would like to hear about

I don't favor the Super Nintendo and currently think it is somewhat overrated, But that is because I don't know what games are decent on it beside Mario and the one Zelda game.

Finally I want to ask have you played with any of your your Super Nintendo games lately? and also what are your favorites for this console?

There's a lot of games on SNES I like
Fire Emblem Genealogy of the Holy War
Fire Emblem Mystery of the Emblem
Fire Emblem Thracia 776
Final Fantasy VI
Shin Megami Tensei
Majin Tensei
Der Langrisser
Trials of Mana
Super Mario World
Chrono Trigger
Gemfire
Super Mario RPG
--
I was playing Majin Tensei (strategy RPG with Megami Tensei demons) and I was liking it a lot but then I started to focus on other things like school. Also, NFL Quarterback Club '96 (SNES version at least) has a really good ost for some reason.

I had both systems as a kid (yeah, I was one of those kids lol), but I always preferred the Genesis and still do. With that said, I still loved my SNES back then and appreciate it way more now then I did back then. As a kid my absolute favorite games for it were DKC, DKC2, Megaman X, and Super Street Fighter. I really didn't have a lot of games for it and certainly never played any of the RPGs until I was much older and into collecting. After getting into collecting I've played a lot more of the must play games like Chrono Trigger, Turtles in Time, Super Mario World, and Final Fight, and I love all of them. There are so, so may other SNES games I need to play and intend on playing in the near future.

Grew up with NES, and SNES as kid- I would play Genesis at my neighbors house. Since SNES had a large library of software its natural you'll come across more than a handful of stinkers, although Nintendo had a seal of quality (https://gamicus.gamepedia.com/Nintendo_Seal_of_Quality) which resulted at minimum, fully playable (mostly glitch-free), decent games. Then again Nintendo has more censorship compared to Sega Genesis, so depending on your age with each system comes into factor.

Early on it became apparent certain developers, besides Nintendo, were creating some phenomenal software that I would keep an eye out for; Squaresoft, Konami, Capcom, for example. Although at the time competitors were releasing superior versions of arcade ports, SNES watered-down versions were still enjoyable. Nintendo's focus on developing games for their home console compared to only bringing over ports was one strong point. Super Mario World, The Legend of Zelda, Donky Kong Country, and from other developers Mega Man X, Castlevania etc.

A few personal favorites of mine growing up:

-Kirby Super Star, and Kirby's Dream Land 3
-Mega Man X, X2, X3, and 7
-Chrono Trigger
-Pocky & Rocky, 2
-Metal Warriors
-Secret of Mana
-Killer Instinct
-Street Fighter Alpha 2
-Rocky Rodent
-Plok

As for Super Famicom, like I mentioned earlier with such a vast library of software, similar to PlayStation 2, dozens of games are fair but plenty are spectacular and enjoyable for their time - today (thanks to fan-translations).

Many SNES games were eventually brought over to GBA down the line, years later we're seeing re-releases, or new games in a series which begun on SNES.

The mario titles are great and all but i'm more of a mario 64 and up guy.

3d mario is where it's at. mario withouth Charles Martinet's voice it's just not the same it's good but i like them 3d mario's a hell lot better except for the ones in the wii u era mario 3d world is meh.

my personal favourites on the snes from what i've played are

hagane
sparkster
axelay
act raiser II

and from some of he more popular ones

contra III
super ghouls n ghosts
super castlevania

Great system but in terms of shoot em ups and action platformers arcade games in general It's kinda lacking compared to the sega genesis/ megadrive imo.

snes shines in especially the rpg and iconic mascots department though

The SNES is one of the greatest video game systems of all time. It's an "endless ocean of quality" as an old friend of mine used to say.

There's many games on that system I favor, but if I had to choose one it would be A Link to the Past.

There's a ton of written reviews on Super Nintendo games in my signature below if anyone cares to look.

Personally I prefer the platform and action games on SNES over it's RPGs. I've played Super Mario RPG, Secret of Mana, FF V and VI, and Earthbound, and just haven't enjoyed them as much as PS1 and up JRPGs. Chrono Trigger is the only one that I think is truly excellent

Would like to replay FF VI though to see if there was something I missed the first time I beat it

Super Metroid
Zelda: LTTP
Donkey Kong Country (All 3 are great, but I’m partial to the first.)
Super Mario World/All Stars
Earthbound

Everything else is just extra.

Right now I'd have to say my favorites are mostly the games I played as a kid.

Super Mario World
Super Mario Kart
Super Punch Out
Donkey Kong Country
Yoshi's Island
Sunset Riders
Faceball 2000

Make no mistake, I do think it's a very good system but even then, I think it's overrated. I feel like many killer app lists nowadays are somewhat embellished.

can we really say that the snes is over rated considering that it's one of the few consoles with the best 16 bit games of it's era?

snes along with genesis are top picks thanks to there large library of them 16 bit games

what are your other options saturn or ps1 with their 32 bit games. admittedtly some excellent games there but a way smaller library since the focus was on 3d not 2d. even for saturn.

and than you have pc engine turbografx in wich the grapics are usually worse and games that look comparable or better than some above average snes games are very rare but same can be said for the snes in wich the highs are way better looking than even those pc engine games

the sound on pc engine it's lacking in comparison unless you have the cd rom option but that's like saturn teritory if cd options are included.

neo geo aes some great games on there but mostly 2d fighting games.

if your looking for 2d fighting games sure 32 bit way to go. but otherwise it's kinda hard to say that the snes is over rated since it has one of the biggest 16 bit libraries not to mention some of the best games released in the 16 bit era

sure you could fit in lookalike retro indi games of today with them modern day features implemented but even than i disagree not to mention were talking about retro consoles not modern ones.

even if we would only include the first party titles on snes super mario world yoshi's island link to the past super metroid for those reason alone it's kinda hard to say that the snes is over rated with such classics wich can not be found on any other retro console not to mention zelda and mario both being top quality series to this very day usually having the best games for the system.

I just looked at Some SNES games on amazon.com, I seen Super Mario Cart and Super Mario world used

(from multiple sellers) for under $20 USD. that's impressive, for how high those 2 super Nintendo cartridges went for in 2015-2016.

But I did see that amazon.com themselves I think, not sure. but I think amazon themselves was selling the same  game of Super Mario Kart new for $300 USD the price of a modern console, and they were selling it used used for $80 today!

You can buy one,  and sometimes two, new atgames consoles for the price
going for $80,

I would never pay $300 for any new or used video game no matter how rare it was, for that price I could buy a whole lot of other games or even a brand new Xbox One  or PlayStation 4 new

If you’re not opposed to it, look into a SNES classic. It will get you a lot of the most popular games, and a few fairly expensive ones too, for a fraction of the price.

Other than the bigger games, some of my favorite SNES/SFC games are:

Zoop
Mario's Super Picross
Super Adventure Island II
Mighty Morphin Power Rangers
Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Movie
Porky Pig's Haunted Holiday
Tetris & Dr. Mario
Super Tetris 3
Tiny Toon Adventures: Buster Busts Loose!
True Lies
Astro Go! Go!
Super Game Boy (not a game, bit it really opens up your library of games to play on SNES)

If you have a Super Scope, Yoshi's Safari is pretty fun too.

I was speaking more to the general popularity of the console compared to all other generations and consoles. Speaking strictly of 16 bit consoles, I still think it's a bit overrated while the Genesis/Mega Drive offers a very similar level of quality. However, due to SOA/SOE marketing strategy favoring sports and more mature content, the broader library of first party Sega games on it to this day remain somewhat obscure, while Nintendo's offerings were/are widely recognized. Gen is often written off entirely by those who grew up without playing one. While SNES is retroactively praised for the vast selection of J-RPGs, which IMO are (and certainly were back then) a niche genre in the west.

For the record, I would easily take any one of the original Sonic trilogy over Super Mario World. That's not to say I think Genesis is all around better, but in plenty of instances, I'd say it's a very close call. Yet SNES to this day is still praised like it's the definitive and only 16 bit console that matters.

even only Sonic 1 vs mario world that's kinda interesting.

I love sega a ton more than the snes. but the sonic games while they are good they are not the best games on the system. if there is anything that is over rated it's them sonic games on the sega system. so many people that just say sonic only when they are thinking of sega that's all they care about.

also in my opinion comparing mario world to the sonic trilogy including the sonic & knuckles upgrade It's like comparing a ferrari to a used mediocre car seriously.

There is so much more content in super mario world also in terms of gameplay tons more replay value. and it's was a console released game aswell unlike sonic 3 wich was a late release to profit for them best grapics and stuff.

3.5 games vs 1 loses to mario world there is much love for mario world but for good reason. allot of people consider it to be the best mario game and that's quite heavy considering mario produces some of the best games out there to this day to still rank that game number 1. same goes for zelda on snes.

I highly doubt a sonic maker would see the same kinds of succes as mario maker. the replay value in them 2d mario games was endless. many secrets tons of lvl's. It's not like sega hasnt tried to make new sonic games in them classic styles but it just hasnt aged as well as mario world.

mario world ain't my favourite game on snes but i can see why it is near the top unlike sonic.

That's coming from someone who heavily prefers the genesis/ megadrive over the snes.

nothing against sonic them 16 bit trilogy games are very good but they are far from the best games on the system unlike mario world wich is near the top of the snes library.

I feel like people put sonic games in every top 10 becuase they try to compare it to mario and that it's sega's most only popular mascot that brought the 16 bit sega console tons of succes not to mention i do agree that the library of sega is way less known than nintendo's so sonic is kinda easy to fit on that list unlike them other titles.

it's just my opinion obviously I get that there are also a ton of people who prefer them sonic games over mario world i could see that.

You're all heathens. The original Sonic games are ace - there is replay value, there are "secrets" within the levels, the soundtrack is the best ever, the difficultly perfectly balanced, there's a two player option in 2 and 3. It doesn't matter that 3 was a late release, so was Kirby's Dream Land 3. Talk about a late release, are you going to dock points for that one? No, it's Nintendo, so you're going to tell me it's one of the best Kirby games ever.

Sorry, but Dr. Robtnik's Mean Bean Machine trounces Super Mario World. I postulate that anyone throwing shade on these games has never had the patience to actually learn how to play and get beyond Green Hill Zone. That used to be me, but I was child. As an adult, I can actually complete these games now and I am very impressed with them.

i agree starlight zone and casino night where some nice tracks I'll give them sonic games that such tracks are better than majority or perhaps all of mario world tracks. the boss tracks where ok only a few of them where really good such as sonic 3 final boss ost

I've beaten them sonic games. there good but it's not the be it all on the sega 16 bit console even sonic 3. I've also played sonic 2 and 3 back in the day allot at my older cousins house 2 player mode who owned a sega even finished it there. sonic 1 is the only one wich I played way later on.

also sonic 3 is a late release with all them fancy stuff since people know how to work with the system and still mario world wins easily as a console release game at the very beginning when everthing was new compared to a late released game.

fair enough though late release does not mean succes if we look at for example megaman x1 till x3.

Super Mario World

Super Mario World is one of the universal greatest games of all time.  If I had to pick one game, that would be grailed as the best game of all time without personal bias involved.  i'd have to pick it.  Everyone knows it, has seen the cover,  anyone can pick it up and play but not everyone can master it.  It has the perfect mix of simplicity for kids and complexity for adults.  It's colorful, it's fun,  it's iconic.  The bosses are more memorable than the last.  Thier is not one ounce of this game that is flawed that I can find.  Not the music, not the graphics, not the gameplay.  It's probably the standard most modern age Sidescrollers (including nintendo themselves) base their content around.  It's perfection.

If you love the older Marios or the Newer Ones.  This one will fit right at home.  It just makes you feel back in time again.  Getting lost in the worlds is something special.   I have beaten it about 4 times and I only recently played it for the first time.  Sadly I was a 2000 baby lol.

Zombies ate my Nieghbors

Zombies ate my Neighbors is such an odd ball, off the wall game that it's so beloved as a cult classic but also didn't sell as many copies as some of the A tier games.  It's really fun, and probably the best game to play with a friend.   It's funny, it's quirky and it is especially cool around halloween time.  :)

Although it's fairly pricy.

Turtles in Time

It's turtles in time lol.  Can't go wrong.  It's one of the greatest beat em ups of all time.  (The SNES is definitely known for it's beat em ups).    It has amazing fight mechanics, excellent hit system,  amazing level design, bosses,  and is also yet another game that is incredible with a friend.   It's simply amazing.

Yet another fairly pricey cart though.

F-Zero

Mezmorizing graphics,  the soundtrack of this game and pilotwings are esentially anthems.  Full blown orchestral masterpieces.  Better than most radio music.  Just 16 bits of pure action packed gritty rock synths and heart pumping visuals.  It's an incredible experience.  And it pushed the SNES's graphic abilities quite a bit with the linear racing.   It's very fast paced,  amazing frames and it's beautiful to look at and play.

Honorable mentions

Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze (Most people's must have pick,  I think it's too hard)
Super Metroid  (Never tried it but people say it's one of the best games ever made)
Zelda Link to the Past  (The purists pick for best Zelda game,  very great :D )
Adventures of Batman and Robin  (I'm sad I sold this one :(.  Almost as good a Turtles in Time.  Amazing beat em up)

I was going to argue, I wanted to so bad.  But than I sat back and realized.  Yeah....  You're right.  Sonic was pretty basic looking back.  Just had incredible music and was fast so as a kid it made me excited.  Kinda like how energy drinks aren't good tasting really but it's carbonated sugar so it's going to make you excited when you drink it.

Then you got into Yoshi's Island.  A overrated game imo too.   The baby crying makes me annoyed.  And it's not quite the standard of the 1st.

But then you HAD to mention my Pink puff brother  ;D.   The all mighty Kirby himself....    The most beloved pink hero to ever grace dreamland?    Ditto's abusive uncle.  Ditto's Alcholic stepdad.  Ditto's husband.  Ditto's idol.   Everything ditto dreams to be.

The one and only pink ameeeeba thingy that can be anything it's heart wants.  A sword wielding badass,  a fire spitting dragon.

Thems fighting words sir lol.

Dang. Favorite games from one of the best consoles ever? That’s a toughie.

Super Mario World
Link to the Past
Super Metroid
Super Punch-Out!!
Chrono Trigger (My favorite RPG ever)
Final Fantasy 3 (or 6 if you want to be a jerk)
Mega Man X
Contra 3
Zombies Ate My Neighbors

Pretty much anything on the SNES Classic and more!

PREACH!!!!  Sonic the Hedgehog is trash. It’s just not fun or a good game. The whole game is about going fast, but if you go fast you die.

And don’t get me wrong, I like Sonic and Kirby as characters but their games just aren’t quite as good as their reputation would have you believe.

I still need to finish Kirby Superstar but I found it a little too hectic to be all that enjoyable.

Honorable mentions

Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze (Most people's must have pick,  I think it's too hard)

Uh, I don't think this game belongs in the Super Nintendo conversation. Great game though.

 ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

I don't know why the hell I put Tropical Freeze in lol.  I guess force of habit from typing it all the time.   It is awesome though.  But again too hard lol.

Sometimes the deadpool mask cuts off circulation.  And the waves crashing against the rocks are too loud the seagull says.  But i'm in my own home and he doesn't pay my rent.  So he can go beg someone else for gingerbread cookies.

While I owned an SNES very early, regrettably I never experimented beyond games I would recognize from somewhere, like from a commercial or a game being an arcade port or I somehow found familiar, like a superhero game or it being a game based on a TV show for example. Even though I owned at the very least around 20+ games, I mostly rented them, so it wasn’t until years later that I would experience the greatness of the console at its fullest through emulation.

In no particular order, these are some of the games I played and remember quite fondly:

Mega Man X trilogy
Mega Man 7
StarFox
Stunt Race FX
Super Metroid
Final Fight trilogy
Super Mario World
Street Fighter II
Killer Instinct
Aero Fighters
Axelay
Disney's Aladdin
Sonic Blast Man
Contra III: The Alien Wars
Magic Sword
The King of the Dragons
Tiny Toon Adventures: Buster Busts Loose!
Maui Mallard in Cold Shadow
Mighty Morphin Power Rangers
Battletoads & Double Dragon
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles IV: Turtles in Time
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Tournament Fighters
Ninja Warriors
Batman Returns
The Death and Return of Superman
Spider-Man & Venom: Maximum Carnage
SWAT Kats: The Radical Squadron
Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest
X-Men: Mutant Apocalypse
True Lies
Dennis the Menace
Robocop versus The Terminator
Super Widget
Captain America and the Avengers
Super Adventure Island
Alien vs. Predator
Jurassic Park
Mario Paint
Clayfighter
Claymates
Bubsy

I remember renting and playing Super Mario RPG and Chrono Trigger, but at that time I hadn't a clue what an RPG was and I genuinely had no idea how to go about in each game, so all I remember is liking them, especially Super Mario RPG, but kind of/sort of feeling unsure and confused. It wasn't until years later that I would fully enjoy both games.

Well, if we’re talking Sonic... none of those games are particularly good.  Flashy, well coded, great production design, but overall not very fun plaformers.  All flash and no substance, IMO.

Again, Sonic fans be like...

My parents used to take us to Big Bear (a mountain town in California) when I was a kid. It was cold and snowy outside, and the living room had a central heater that blasted warm air near where the TV was. At that time, there was NOTHING better than waking up early around 6am, a couple hours before anyone else in the house, sitting in that warm heater spot, and playing Final Fantasy III (FF6) on the SNES. It was the absolute best.

There are a TON of awesome games on that system.
