I saw a video about this and found it really interesting. If someone asked you to try out a video games for the first time, which ones would you give them to play and why? What would be the best way to show what gaming has to offer?
I was trying to grab a bunch of different genres and styles with my list, but left off some genres like survival horror.

That's hard to say, but here's my 10 picks:

- Crash Bandicoot 2

- LittleBigPlanet
If I have children someday, these are likely the titles I'd start them off with, maybe wait until they're a bit older for Quake lol

This to me is actually a hard question. Mainly because my way of think is what do they like already. In other words if they like horror Movies I would show them the Resident Evil 2 remake, or RE7, maybe Dead Rising 4 for those who like Shaun of the Dead. I'd show a fan of Alien, Metroid. Daytona USA to a stock-car racing fan. Marvel's Spider-man, Batman Arkham Asylum, and inFAMOUS to a comics fan. You get the idea.
There's only one exception I can really think of and that is Wii Sports/Resort- I know this seems weird at first but think about it. How many people had have had family members who had no intrest in games decide to try this game? The games are simple and yet they can bring out a competitive edge in some.

something simple to play, this question is too hard for me, But maybe an Atari 2600 game? It's hard to say.
there was this cool fly smashing game with blood I used to play as a kid it was like wack'a'mole with flies for the windows PC lol

1. Minecraft. (Limitless, Endless, easy to pick up and play. Self explanatory. Adaptable. Its one game I think literally anyone can play)
2. Tetris. (Same reasons above. Its just accessible. Addictive. Simple but ascending in difficulty. Its great)
3. Super Mario World (The greatest video game of all time. A game as timeless as it is beautiful. A true legend. In animation, style and gameplay. Visuals. Soundtrack. Its a gaming must)
4. GTA 5. - (Open world. Truly massive in scope. Fun and enduring.)
5. The Last of Us - ( Cinematic masterpiece. Plot wise one of the greats.)
6. Street Fighter 2 Ultra - (Simple yet iconic. Less to figure out than some fighters. Very easy to pick up but hard to master.
7. BOTW - (Gorgeous World, wonderful crafting elements. Sinple for a begginer but hard to perfect. )
8. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe - (Mario Kart)
9. Super Mario 64 - (Everything an open world platformer inspires to be. So iconic and fun)
10. The walking dead telltale series (Shows how powerful plot can be in games. Very easy to play for anyone. Great transition from movies to game. )

My dad, a generally gruff mechanic with no game experience outside of Legend of Zelda on NES, is addicted to Angry Birds 2. ;D
As for the question, the #1 video game for people who have never played games is an easy choice: Bust-A-Move, aka Puzzle Bobble. Over the years I've brought my Neo Geo setup to various parties, and Bust-A-Move is always a hit with everyone.

If I were to introduce video games to someone who hasn't played them before, I'd definitely pick a list of easy hand-holding games to get their feet wet.

7. Zelda 2: The Adventure of Link

It would really be something catered to the person asking, becuase it's going to vary a lot based on what they're after. How does this person feel about games? What are the they trying to accomplish by being introduced to them? Someone who's always been fascinated by all games but somehow never played one would be a prime candidate for a cherry-picked retro list, with special attention given to any game they can remember reading about (that's suitable for new players.) On the flipside, a group of parents not intending to get into games, but just wanting to know what the hubbub is about, would be best suited for party games & light VR- something that captures the interaction & wonder a new game can provide without forcing them to really learn a controller. Maybe a beginner's run-through of Fortnite/Minecraft if they can be properly isolated from other players (so their lack of skill doesn't impede things.)
I do see one notable omission from the lists thus far, though... KIRBY! Seriously, those games are tailor-made for novice players! How has no one brought them up yet?

My Mom loves puzzle games on the computer. and both my living grandparents only like to play regular solitaire on the computer. Although my grandfather might play other computer games, I don't know except for solitaire.
One of my old home providers used to play free casino games online with other people on Windows XP years ago when he was not busy at his job.
and I highly recommend to anyone who is older in age than most of us. the above choices of my family and my old home provider mentioned above or party multiplayer games
But for younger children and teenagers as well as people 50 years old and younger, that are new to video games
they may enjoy simple (pick up and play) arcade games without too many controls maybe an Atari Flashback? or Atari Anthology on PlayStation 2 or Activision Anthology on the PlayStation 2?

Those video games are not really that complicated only hard to master in fact in all seriousness newcomers might enjoy those kind of games,

i don't know man there aren't that many games in wich you can see the game over screen within 20 seconds losing all lives some of those games listed above fit that category literally even when your good but don't know the patterns yet.
I have played some games with my old parents and some semi friends at parties who never play games some time ago people who never really play games. my dad way back than did beat super mario world but he hasnt played for quite some time and apparently you can lose your skills if your a busy guy and you have no interest in playing games in your free time.
all these people old or young adult Having even trouble to press move left or right while jumping at the same time it's like teaching handicapped people how to play a game. you can see that they have a ton of difficulty holding a controller looking at their hands and facial expression
These aren't dumb people yet they play worse than a 5 year old kid who might just begin. I'm fairly certain this will be the case for the majority who do not care about playing games and do other stuff in their free time or are far to busy
Can I give an example of reggie at the smash 4 invitational against hungrybox. this guy ain't a dumb person and has top tier earnings compared to majority in the world considering his function at nintendo.
He probably practiced a bit but it still was terrible. he was far better than my parents or some semi friends who never played games though. newcomers who don't play games or havent played them in like 20+ years will most likely be handicapped bad. i reject your argument your underestimating how bad newcomers probably are especially the ones who never played games uptil now.

Also on a sidenote. jigglypuff is the only character in smash 4 wii u that did not receive a single buff in the updates wich happened allot to all other characters. jiggs is very notorious for that reason in smash 4. quite a group of people that wanted to buff the puff but it never happened.
Only a single nerf while already being near the bottom of the tier list. Reggie probably bribed sakurai to prevent Hbox of having succes with jiggs in smash after the slaughter during the invitational ;D

Idea being these games can be fun experiences to watch.
I was always bored watching other people play shooters, platformers, etc. but I can get into a good story or social experience even if I’m not driving it.

I feel like people mentioning old games like the original Super Mario Bros. are seeing through nostalgia goggles. A lot of those older games are pretty difficult to get anyone into, let alone a non gaming person, mostly because their mechanics haven't aged well or they were made specifically too difficult so you spent more time on them. The only games my family have ever been interested in watching me play were games with great stories or visually beautiful/colorful games, and the only games I ever saw my parents play were Wii sports and Mario Kart. So you want something simple and pretty, but fun and possibly something with a good story.
Horizon Zero Dawn: It's a beautiful game with a fantastic story plus it has a specific mode that lets you focus more on the story than combat.
Yoshi's Whooly World: A very colorful, cute, fun game which is very easy to play. Dying doesn't really matter and if it's too hard there is an easy mode as well.
Zelda Breath of the Wild: For some odd reason non gamers seem to really love this game even though it can get pretty difficult. It could be the absolute freedom to do whatever you want whenever you want or the fact that it's kind of just a sandbox game with a story slapped onto it.
Mario Kart Wii/Mario Kart 8 Deluxe: Like I mentioned before, very easy to drop into and just play and have fun. Even if you get your ass kicked you have items to help with your skill gap.
Wii Play/Sports/Resort: Another thing I've noticed is that older people love playing games with motion controls rather than through a standard controller. Easy to get into and little to no buttons to learn.
Super Smash Bros: Any Smash Bros game is gonna be a fun time with both children and adults. Preferably the newest version because they're generally the easiest to play.
Mario Party: Another series that everyone can have fun with regardless of age or skill. Obviously there is some strategy with Mario Party but the luck/chaos involved is what makes it easy for newbies to get into.
The Last Guardian: This one could either be watched or played depending on the person. It has an incredibly emotional and unique story that is easy to keep up with and the gameplay is not very intense as it's mostly just you going through puzzles with a big dog bird thing, plus the visuals are incredibly stunning.
Tetris: This game is one of the most universally known games ever and if you don't know about it, it's so easy to get into. It's like the blocks that kids put together when in preschool or LEGO. No brainer ezpz for anyone.

Normally I would recommend games based on individual tastes, but throwing that aside for argument’s sake, and the topic, I’m going to assume the person I’m recommending games only has a PS2, therefore he/she is limited only to PS2 and PS1 games, as well as has a PC for the sake of emulation. In that scenario, I would try to keep it simple and recommend games I’ve played myself that aren’t overly complicated, but can in turn potentially open the floodgates for that person to go out and seek out more games to play.
I would recommend:

• Super Mario World
• StarFox (SNES)
• Mega Man X
• Pokémon Yellow Version
• Twisted Metal 2
• Metal Gear Solid
• Ico / Shadow of the Colossus
• Capcom Classics Collection
• Jak and Daxter: The Precursor Legacy
The first game I listed was actually Tetris, but I personally would rather prefer a novice have a far more interactive and dynamic gaming experience, they can easily pick up a puzzle game at a later time; I feel most people have experienced puzzlers one way or another in their life, anyway. Overall, I believe these games are a good balance for a newcomer, especially with the diversity that Capcom Classics Collection offers. I actually chose Volume 2 instead, but decided against it; and was initially going to include Taito Legends 2 in the list, but one compilation title is enough, plus I feel Capcom Classics Collection is a bit more cohesive (if I’m even making sense by saying that). And yes, I reckon I’m kind of cheating by choosing a compilation game, but it has some truly worthwhile titles that I’m sure a newcomer would greatly enjoy. I also know I’m cheating by bundling Ico and Shadow of the Colossus together, but anyone that has played both knows where I’m going with that. In a way, you can’t have one without the other, and I’m sure a newbie will enjoy the experience of playing both, one after the other. I would’ve included Katamari Damacy and Ōkami in the list, as I feel they both would be a nice choice for a beginner, but I’ve yet to play them to feel comfortable enough to recommend them. I also think Spyro the Dragon and Crash Bandicoot are strong choices, but I already selected various platformers. Lastly, I refrained from including strenuous RPGs since I believe it would be better for a person experiencing video games for the very first time to be introduced to the genre as gingerly as possible, thus why I chose Pokémon Yellow.
