Title: You guys know of proper methods for storing your game consoles?
Post by: droaa on November 01, 2019, 12:32:37 am
Hey y'all. So this came to mind the other day as I was thinking of storing some consoles in the shed in the back of my house down the line and I was wondering if any of y'all have an idea of what would be good option in terms of storing gaming consoles. Not sure if cardboard boxes are good or maybe those clear plastic containers or maybe something else. I'm not sure so any suggestions are welcomed. Thanks in advance.

One proper way is not in the shed! Dear god, not it the shed. No closet? Attic? Basement? Plastic tubs that lock is fine, but.... not the shed.

Closet is too small. No storing in the attic. The basement is not used for storage tbh. Only other option would be the garage.

As long as it is in a sealed plastic container and you can lock it, then shed is not the end of the world but still not a great choice. But why not the basement?? I use my basement for storage.  Can you not fit anything down there?

What about under the bed?

A garage or shed is just a poor choice overall for storage of any home electronics device.

In plastic containers with lockable lids, and maybe some kind of desiccant as well depending on your local climate

if it's an old cardridge based system i mean like considering what these things had to endure and in what terrible shape a ton of are in today and still working I'd say the shed would most likely not have that much of an effect.

not saying that it's a great idea considering ice cold winters but it will damage those consoles the least.

atari jaguar pc engine and other disc based systems though not the greatest idea. same goes for newer electronics.

Why can't you store in the attic? Is it already full?

I don't want to come across as mean, but seriously? You're thinking of storing your gaming consoles in a shed and you think cardboard boxes are going to do the job? C'mon, man.

I would honestly rethink the shed, maybe store them in the garage instead. Just use one of those tote containers with lock.

Personally I'd find space in my room and try to store them there, that is unless you're space is extremely limited.

Store them in garbage bags, make sure they are loose so any edges will not puncture them and knot them off tightly if you want to throw in some silicone packets but the bag will keep out the moisture. Then store them in plastic totes. As long as they have those claspe that lock the lid down and you can lift it by yourself when it's filled up you should be fine.

My basement is not a typical basement in that there is a bedroom, a salon and a laundry room so its pretty preoccupied. Now that I think about it, there is a spot underneath the stairs. The only issue is I would have to clean out that area if I wanted to make room since that spot is filled with junk.

What about under the bed?

Didnt think of that. I guess perhaps inside plastics bags just so it doesn't accumulate dust over time

No one has used that attic since we move to this house 11 years ago. The only time anyone has ever had access to it was to fix the electric wires in the house and for cable purposes. Its a very small attic so too much weight from what I was told is a bad idea.

Let me put your mind at ease. The shed part is correct but I was never going to put them in cardboard boxes. That was just a question I wanted to clarify since I didnt think cardboard was a good idea. As for the shed, bad idea is the general consensus.

Store them in garbage bags, make sure they are loose so any edges will not puncture them and knot them off tightly if you want to throw in some silicone packets but the bag will keep out the moisture. I will keep this in mind.

All in all I appreciate the advice. Again, I have no idea hence why I came here and like I said, this was just something I was thinking of for down the line as I dont intend on doing this at this very moment. With that said, I'll have to come up with something as space is rather limited but not impossible.

Honestly, your first concern isn't what to put it in, but where it's going. You have 3 things to worry about- temperature, moisture, and dust. Too much extreme for any of these can be detrimental to your systems.

Dust is easy- put it in a container of some kind. Preferably a plastic box with a lid, but cardboard can be OK if the other two are controlled well. Adding desiccant to the box can help deal with moisture- you can either save silica packets as they turn up in other products, or just buy a big box of the stuff. It's not uncommon to find in craft stores for use in drying flowers, although you'll need to get a breathable material to make a pouch out of to hold it (perhaps a tulle or cheesecloth?)

Temperature is always the hardest, storage spaces are rarely temperature controlled. I always go by the idea that stored electronics should be in a 'living' space- somewhere you personally send a great deal of time (since that's almost always going to have a thermostat set to an appropriate temp). Closets, under beds, maybe even a laundry room depending on your personal setup (that might be too moist if you regularly air-dry clothes in it, for example.) If these places are full, check what's in them- perhaps there's something that could stand being moved to a less climate controlled storage space? Or perhaps your stuff could be re-organized to make more space? Look things over & really think about it, there's probably a solution in there somewhere.

Consoles are a little less picky then games.  Games have labels and paper inserts, boxes.  If you leave them in an area with too much humidity or dew.  They will get wrinkled and look awful.  All the very fragile and easily damaged materials.  Consoles more or less are hard plastic bricks.

Bubble wrap and the giant hefty clear totes work really good.   No dust, no sunlight.  That about wraps it up for consoles.   If you are really worried or plan on storing them for a long time.  Put some anti moisture packets like silica that they give in shoe boxes.     But the moisture will have a hard time getting into the plastic tote to begin with.

As for tempature.  You can store consoles anywhere from the depths of hell to the coldest iceberg on Antartica.   So long as they remain dry.  If you live in a place like Arizona or Sacremento or something.  You already get plenty of dry air.   They will preserve better.  Even car collectors love to buy cars from places like that because they get less rust from less rain and humidity.

The shed will work just fine imo.   If you were storing games and collectible figures i'd say no.  But consoles are hard plastic bricks.  I have never really seen one get damaged if it wasn't intentional or accidentally damaged by dropping or spill or something.    Some can't have sunlight without going yellow but your shed will block sun.   I say it's good to go with some nice containers :)

I have my extra consoles in the garage in metal file cabinets. I just wrap them in bubble wrap and line the cabinet with felt. People/offices are always getting rid of them.

It depends on where you live though. I don’t have snow in winter or 120 degree summers and don’t have to deal with humidity.

Entertainment centers, Plastic tubs, if you put them in the bacement or under the stairs. Or, any unused space in the house.

As for the attic? only if you have a solid wood surface and never in-between the rafters  my family has a wooden cabin and we store all kinds of heavy stuff in the attic. the addic should be the best choice but that is my opinion

(edit) if the attic is your choice, be careful I fell from an attic in my apartment before onto the floor. Take one console at a time I don't want you to drop any. or  for you to  fall from the attic like I did before.

Larry Bundy Jr. a United Kingdom based YouTuber made a video of him losing most of his entire collection while storing them in boxes and bags in his garden shed in his back yard, I think it is a bad idea myself

that's the UK one of the countries with the most rain no matter what time of year. that's just asking for trouble. in just a few weeks thanks to a leak. than again rain is pretty common in the UK so yea the damage ain't to suprising.

That is a painful video to watch.

BUT- it does illustrate something important. What did he put his stuff in the shed into? Nothing. Garbage bags & stacked loose boxes. If he'd had plastic tubs to put his things in, they certainly would have fared better.

Just goes to show the importance of accounting for moisture- even if it didn't leak, I imagine simple condensation from being someplace humid would have damaged all the paper goods. Ever see a yard sale sign left posted overnight? Just the morning dew will make the ink run. Being in the pacific northwest, I'd NEVER use an outbuilding for storing electronics. I'd be way too paranoid about moisture.

I have a thread on here of some consoles that I had stored out in a shed kinda willy nilly.  It's not pretty, I do not recommend at all.
