Title: In need of thoughts and maybe help
Post by: slimjim on May 03, 2020, 03:42:55 am
Hi all,

I am currently suffering from a slight cash flow problem, which is obviously impacting my ability to add to my collection.  There are a quite a few things that have come and then gone that before i would certainly have picked up.

I'm certainly not grumbling, people out there are in far worse position, but none-the-less there is something out there that i think aligns to my collection, which my collection would never be complete without, and time has either run out or is certainly running out for me to get it.

Initially when i started out collecting, it started out as just getting new ps4 consoles - Special editions (this started when i got the 20th anniversary edition for my birthday), for quite a while i had more consoles than i did games.

Some time down the track i picked up a new xbox one elite, for practically nothing.  This evolved my collecting to also start picking up new special xbox one editions.  As time went on i started to see game collectors editions drop to really low prices, so started to pick them up too, later deciding it was quite cool getting them at such low prices, but i was missing out on some of the cooler/rarer collectors editions (as stock didn't last to a price drop).  The challenge was then set to get all the collectors editions, but pay minimal prices for them.  Sometimes i held off and lost them, others i paid a higher price for than i could have got them for.  For most though it worked out pretty well.  As i was doing this i had a focus on ps4 collectors editions, but if it helped financially i would fall back to xbox one's - This soon stopped, as i decided if it wasn't ps4 i didn't want it.

This story is going on longer than i thought - Apologies.  Anyway over the last year and a half i have become a PS4 games collector and a gen 8 console collector.  For a while the best part, for me, of my collection was my taco bell consoles (the gold ps4 and platinum xbox one), this lasted until taco bell did another competition with the xbox one eclipse.  Now, there's an obvous hole in my collection.  When the competition first started i kept an eye on ebay, then as it became obvious i didn't have the money i stopped looking.  As this was a while ago, yesterday i had a look and only saw one, and this was missing parts that initially came with it.

Now i feel like i am at (or past) the now or never stage to get it.  So, the question is, as i live in Australia i am reliant on international shipping, are there any available to anyone in the US, and is there anyone in the US that would be willing to become my best fried and help me get it?  Even, if that was the case, the next question is how can i afford it.  I've been thinking about this, i do have the limited edition ps2 game the getaway (it's been opened, but like new), i know the prices on ebay are absurd, and it's well over-priced, so i also started to think about how much i could get for my new xbox collectors editions (mostly dark souls 3 & morrowind).  Does anyone think that these 3 combined could cover the costs, or is that unrealistic?

If you made it this far, it's appreciated :)

Thanks all

I read all of your post and I can't figure out what your asking us, I can't help anyway because I don't have a generation 8 console but maybe someone else could help. what are you asking?

(edit) so I re-read the post multiple times over, and I'm guessing you want a rare or special edition Xbox One?

I'm really not the right person for this specifically, as I'm very much of the idea that games are to be played & consoles used, so the idea of collecting multiples of the same system is odd to me- like, I only need one PS4 to play my games, why would I buy more just to have different colors?

However, as someone whose been collecting for 20 years now, I can say this: JUST. WAIT. Right now, this generation is still current, still relevant. Having a rare PS4 or Xbox One at the moment is something of a boon- good for bragging rights. However- the next run of systems is looming on the horizon. Soon, no one will care what PS4 or Xbox One you have becuase no one will care about those consoles. Much like my Pink Nintendogs DS was once so sought-after I was randomly asked on the street if I'd sell, now it barely breaks 50 bucks on Ebay.

Sort out your cash flow, THEN start looking for these consoles. With any luck the double-whammy of 'new generation out now' and 'I went broke due to global pandemic' will result in you having multiple options. Just don't rush to spend the little money you do have on something that, 100%, WILL lose value in the next 2 years.

I am glad I am not the only one on this board that feels that way about people just buying every color in stock just because they can afford to. (especially retro consoles)

especially with the items that are in limited supply I feel that those type of collectors don't have a regard for other collectors, chances are those people will eventually sell their dupes for ridiculous prices, most notable beyond my budget and knowing that they have the power to do so makes me both angry and jealous.

Only jealous because in case one of my own consoles breaks and cannot be repaired again, when I will need a new one it won't be affordable

Man, newish member makes his 1st post here and he's confronted by multiple members about what/how he chooses to collect....on a collecting website. If someone wants to collect each version of their console of choice, power to them.

I have multiple Xbox ones, one in my living room and one in my bedroom. I can easily pick up and play a game where I left off on the other console due to the cloud. 360/PS3/XB1/PS4 all use the cloud, so you can do that with any of those systems.

If I had the room and funds, I would definitely have one of each console color on display.
The only console I currently have that was a limited release is the Gun grey Metal Gear Solid PS3. Any other consoles out there are extremely mass produced. There shouldn’t be any difficulty picking one up to play your games on. Nobody is ruining your hobby.

OP. I wish you the best hunting down the consoles you’re interested in. Those one of ones, or custom giveaways are going to be challenging though. Happy collecting!!!

I heard rumors that collecting Australia is vary difficult, since I've heard just about every single game cost more there then most other places in the world. I never actually done the research

I also wish you the best of luck :-\

I was replying since this person lives in Australia, I was remembering what someone else wrote on another forum, (retro collect) somebody on that forum mentioned that in Australia it's vary hard to obtain cheap video games, I have no proof but that is what I was commenting about. I wish this person luck finding and growing their game collection

Collecting sealed consoles to stash looks like a gateway to someting bad.
I get this is a collection site, but I urge you as one Australian to another, to reconsider and think over what your doing.

Having huge game collections I can understand as you amass a range of readily available games to play on their native hardware.
Hell I do it, and while I've defintley slowed down in the last few years to focus on actually playing them all even I can admit I was swept up in a hoarder mentality for a few months.

But collecting the same brand of consoles with just special variants?
Maybe collecting one or two variants or collecting different consoles types entirely (Sega, Nintendo, etc) could be interesting. But from the sounds of it these are just piling up in your house.

If its got to the point that your reaching out to strangers on a site you've never spoken to before to aquire this next one, I think you're heavily relying on these to feel gratification and that's a red flag.
It's in my opinion you should only really collect stuff that either:
A: Wont make you break the bank
B: You have a valid interest in and can see yourself using

Want to clarify that I'm not annoyed or angry with you. Just concerned you might be getting a bit too into invested in this. I've been there before and I'm sure a few others on the site have gone through it as well.
Hell some in the thread are wishing you luck so maybe I'm in the wrong. Just keep this in mind when buying these. To each their own.

Some strange opinions coming from you guys on a site that tracks concols variants. :P

OP probably isn't going to get the help they want simply because:
1. They are an unknown
2. They do not use the site
