Title: The Original Xbox Appreciation Thread

I've noticed a lot of naysayers about the Original XBox, so I decided we need an Original Xbox appreciation thread!

A little history behind the Xbox:

It was Microsoft's first home console, released nearly 19 years ago in November 2001. It was called the XBox due to it relying on Microsoft's Direct X technology (originally it was going to be named the Direct Xbox.)

It was the powerhouse of it's generation, being the most powerful console on the market until the launch of it's own successor in 2005, the XBox 360. It was also the first console to have a hard drive built into it at launch, as well as the first to have a high-speed ethernet port built into it at launch (granted, the Dreamcast did have a slower 56k modem built into it before). And it enjoyed early success at the online market with the launch of the original XBox Live service; Halo 2 being a big part of that success.

The console has also been dubbed the "Dreamcast 2" by some Sega fans. This is due to having a good amount of Sega exclusives on it at the time such as Shenmue 2, Panzer Dragoon Orta, Outrun 2, Toe Jam & Earl III, Crazy Taxi 3, House of the Dead III, and others. In addition to that, the original Xbox controller was inspired by the design of the Dreamcast controller.

Xbox Live service launched in summer of 2002 with Halo 2 being the "must-have" online game to play, ensuring it's success. Halo 2 also happens to be the Original XBox's highest selling game.

The Original Xbox quickly saw games dry up for it as the XBox 360 launched in late 2005. It was officially discontinued in 2009 when Microsoft ended warranty-support for the console. The Original Xbox Live servers were shutdown in 2010, ending Xbox Live support for the console.

Original Xbox Pros:
-Most powerful console of that generation.
-Often the best multiplatform version of games.
-720p HD support right out of the box.
-Best online support of that generation, including a high-speed ethernet port built-in.
-Hard drive built-in expands the console's capabilities.
-Easily replaceable parts.
-4 Controller Ports for on couch multiplayer.
-Built for LAN-parties with multiple consoles.
-DVD and CD playback functionality
-Easy to soft-mod.
-Controllers for both big hands and small hands.
-Solid built hardware
-Strong First-Person Shooter library.
-Strong Western-RPG library.
-Solid Exclusive library (see below)
-Many of it's games are backwards compatible on XBox 360, and some even on the Xbox One.

Original Xbox Cons:
-Big and bulky.
-Lacking in JRPG titles.
-Lacking in shoot-em up titles.
-Some third-parties supported the PS2 more.
-A distinct lack of Resident Evil.
-Support for the console (as in game releases) was dropped like a rock when the 360 hit (vs the PS2 which was supported for years after the PS3 launch).

Some Great True Exclusives on the Console:
-Conker Live & Reloaded
-Dead or Alive 3
-Dungeons & Dragons: Heroes
-Jet Set Radio Future
-MechAssault 1 & 2
-Panzer Dragoon: Orta
-Project Gotham Racing 1 & 2
-Sega GT 2002
-Steel Battalion
-Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2x
-WWE Raw 1 & 2

Some Great Console Exclusives on the System:
-Advent Rising
-Arx Fatalis
-Brute Force
-Crazy Taxi 3
-Crimson Skies: High Road to Revenge
-Fable
-Halo 1 & 2
-Jade Empire
-Ninja Gaiden
-Oddworld: Stranger's Wrath
-Shenmue II (in the U.S.)
-Stubbs the Zombie in Rebel Without a Pulse

Some facts about the console you might not know:
-You can rip CDs and play them straight from your hard drive.

-The ambient noises you hear in the background while the system is running it's OS are actual NASA recordings. They wanted to give it an otherworldly feel, like it was something from out of this world.

-The parts inside are easily replaced, like a PC board. If you need to repair it, it's as simple as ordering the parts on eBay, and swapping them out.

-Because of those easily replaceable parts, you can upgrade your hard drive.

-There is a full-on Mech simulator on the console complete with fully operational Mech controls that come with the game. Steel Battalion.

-The Xbox was originally supposed to be backwards compatible with the Dreamcast in it's earlier development stages after some talks with Sega. This was due to the fact that the Dreamcast was based on Windows technology. But the idea was later scrapped.

-The Xbox can play DVDs. I know, many XBox users are going, "Duh." But when you talk to people online, you will often hear from them that the PS2 won that generation in a large part due to having a DVD-player built-in, as if the XBox couldn't do that either.

Feel free to share your thoughts, feelings, favorite games, or favorite moments from the Original Xbox.

I love the original Xbox, a lot, I'm even more thankful to someone on this forum who told me to get my used Original Xbox looked at for a common leaky capacitor issue. Mine was leaking a little but I had that repaired as soon as I knew it was a common issue.

Don't get me wrong, I still love my original Xbox, it has somewhat early PlayStation 3 graphics in an exclusive golf game exclusive to the system called Links 2004. It's really got some great racing games for it. I love how the controller setup in all the racing games I've played on it. use the left trigger for break and right trigger for accelerate it feels like I have full control of the car or vehicle while playing as well. I love how it has it's own hardrive and it seems to save game progress faster the PlayStation 2.

I love the controller, it feels just right too :)

I've been having a greater appreciation for it as the original Xbox years pass especially due to backwards compatibility - Playing titles on the Xbox 360 is a joy and for many of the following titles are my best ways to play said games

- Burnout 3: Takedown!
- Crash Twinsannity
- Dead or Alive Ultimate (I got this recently & am delightd to be able to play DoA2 again!!)
- Fahrenheit
- Shenmue II (Prefer this over the PS4 version..)
- Sonic Heroes, Shadow The Hedghog
- The Thing

Then are some decent exclusives like:
Blitz the Cat, Dead Or Alive 3, Fable, Jet Set Radio Future, Stubbz, Kung Fu Chaos & many more!

It;s not a console i will go out of my way to get due to the same problem I have wit hthe PS2 being a pre-HD era console. But if Xbox Series X intends to make more original Xbox titles available I'll be along for the ride!

While I didn't love the original Xbox as much as other consoles, I played SO MUCH Halo on it.  Me and my buddies would regularly have LAN parties, with lots of people playing, and our usual Halo game type was no shields, so you could die fast and it made some CTF matches last for literal hours.  Hundreds of hours were spent playing both Halo 1 and 2.  There weren't many other games I was interested in though.  I played some, but generally I thought the PS2 was better.

I know a lot of people like to hate on Halo, but back when it was a new series, it really was something special. It's production values were a cut above other console games at the time. The soundtrack was amazing. Real voice acting when most video game voice acting at the time was half-assed amateurs. A helluva sci-fi story made for it. And then that wonderful multiplayer to boot. Not just deathmatch, but fantastic co-op play too.

The Halo series was genuinely great and it didn't really lose my interest till after Halo: Reach, when Bungie left.  I was kinda done with it at that point, nothing about what they were adding or doing with 4 or 5 did much for me and it's only now with Halo Infinite is it kinda tickling my interest again, especially now that I can play it on PC.

The original halo has got to be one of the best video game experiences I've had on any system.I know their are alot of haters who can't be open minded to other options and that's a shame because there is alot to enjoy on Xbox if you just play it and stop finding reasons not to.It is a great system and Im happy to have one or mabey even three.

Wow. Three.

I have two. One modded with Xbox Media Center and a handful of old NES, SNES, and Genesis games I own.

But the I found out due to the nature of exploit used to mod the console, it could no longer play the MechAssault games. So I had to get another just so I can play MechAssault again.

"Halo Combat: Evolved Evolved" also known as Halo 1 is a good first person shooter and it's vary hard to complete even on easy difficulty setting for me, but I'm somewhat disappointed, that some levels have vary low detail, I mean compared to Doom 3. "In Halo 1:Combat Evolved" I just wish some of the levels l didn't all look the same, each time you go into the indoor structure, most of the level design looks copied and pasted. and used over and over, with little detail.

If you compare Halo 1 to games like Halo 2 or Duke Nukem 3D or even games like Half Life, The vary first Halo is lacking some of it's potential level design detail.  part The level design looked stretched, or rushed. using the same exact detail over and over. on virtually all the parts of the levels that are indoors.

I mean I used to design levels for other PC First Person Shooter games and so I can tell that a giant majority of the first Halo's levels were indeed just a few different rooms pretty much with the same exact detail as other rooms, with little varity.

Well yeah; there's 4 years between Halo 1 and Doom 3. I'd hope a triple A series like Doom would look better 4 years later.

In 2001 copying game assets was incredibly common still. So a lot of areas looking similar, while not ideal, isn't unexpected at all for a game in 2001. Remember Halo 1 was a launch title for the console. Most of us were still playing PS1 and N64 at that point, and Halo blew that kind of stuff completely out of the water.

Have you ever played Half Life? for the PC it was made in 1998 and it had a lot more detail and graphics. I am not trying to down halo 1 but just saying that maybe since Halo: Combat evolved was a new console game made in 2001 like you said and maybe Bungie were new back then.

After all and come to think of it I don't think you can drive any vehicles in Half Life so ::)

(edit) Bungie came out in 1991.

I honestly haven't. I have Half-Life 2 on Xbox, though.

I've never been a big PC gamer. I wasn't one at all growing up in the 80s and 90s. That was for the well off kids, we couldn't afford one then. I have one now as an adult, but I've just always been a console gamer so I still am. So, long story short, I went from stuff like Goldeneye, Duke Nukem 3D, and Doom to Halo when it came to FPS.

Yep, gotta agree the original Xbox is a great console. I remember buying Knights of the Old Republic before I even had the console. ;D And it was so very worth it, played 1 and 2 numerous times in my youth.

One of these days I'll get myself an original Xbox. Out of all the retro consoles I don't own, I think the original Xbox is at the top of my list. I already have several games and full set of four controllers for the thing  ;D

I think my issues that have been keeping me from pulling the trigger are the console size and the seemingly countless hidden issues they end up having.

For original Xbox? I own two and have never had an issue. I don't hear about many issues with them. That seems to be more 360s.

i always get some flack for this, but I actually prefer the original XBOX over the Gamecube (I like the PS2 and Dreamcast more than both those however). I feel like the XBOX' library was criminally overlooked and often just thought of as the console you played Halo on and that's it. I myself thought this for years until I decided to start collecting for it and found a ton of excellent games for it that people were practically giving away. In fact it was so easy to collect for that I've been done with XBOX collecting for nearly a decade after finding almost every game I wanted for it for under $5 each.

Who can agree that the original Xbox was also the best looking console in the 6th generation of video game consoles?

because I think even the normal colored casing on the Xbox was the best of it's time. then the SEGA Dreamcast, then the Nintendo GameCube then the appearance of the original black PlayStation 2 consoles

Eh, while I like the black/green color scheme, the console is just a huge block to me, up there with the likes of the PS3.  Style wise, probably the Dreamcast looks the best in general, followed by the PS2, then the Xbox, and then Gamecube.  Gamecube is mostly on the bottom because I thought the handle was kinda dumb.  If we include different system versions, the PS2 Slim is probably the best looking one to me.

I don't think the Xbox One looks good either, but it is at least abit more sleek than the original Xbox and lighter.

Was there any major graphic improvements done to the Xbox360? because Halo 2 played on my original Xbox looks a lot like Halo Reach and Halo 3 OSTD. on the 360 but I have not touched Halo 3 and Halo 4 on the 360 yet.

As far as I can tell later games on the OG Xbox's look much alike all the Xbox360 games I've played so far on an actual Xbox360

the only thing is the the Original "Halo Combat Evolved" looks dated compared to today's games, but it was made in 2001 so, and Halo 2 was made in 2004.

I understand that Xbox as a brand has been around for near 20 years now and that there is a large following. There is a large fanbase and that's great. People tend to have fond memories of what they grew up with.

The only thing I credit Xbox with is getting online infrastructure done well for consoles. That said, it was truly the Halo 2 player base that turned me off of Xbox initially. I had bought an Xbox OG with the Halo 2 Collectors Edition in order to play with my brother online. Unfortunately, he was never online. Once I beat the story, I went online and the user base was so horrible. I was always getting put on the team with 8 year olds that were singing into the mic and running in circles instead of capturing the damn flag. I also never knew how many lovers my mom had until I went online with Halo 2. I got so frustrated by the situation that I sold off the Xbox and everything that went with it after owning it for only a month. I never went back. Granted, subsequent systems gave different reasons not to buy them.

The original Xbox was my true return to gaming after the NES. I skipped SNES/Genesis out of spite. I bought a Jaguar on closeout "so our nephew could have something to play when he came over" ie... that is what I told my wife, I just wanted a console. We did eventually get a N64 right at the end of that generation and it sparked enough interest that we bought both the Xbox (me) and GameCube (wife) at launch.
I was so eager for the system that I bought every magazine I could, read everything online I could find and even picked up the behind the scenes book Opening the Xbox (https://www.amazon.com/Opening-Xbox-Microsofts-Entertainment-Revolution/dp/0761537082 (https://www.amazon.com/Opening-Xbox-Microsofts-Entertainment-Revolution/dp/0761537082)) and read it cover to cover multiple times. We even bought our first HDTV and surround sound system in preparation for it.
I took launch day off and picked up the systems, brought them home, tossed the GameCube into a corner and fired up the system for the first time. The boot sequence was exactly the indicator a new generation of gaming called for. It was otherworldly and very psuedo-future-tech looking. A few adjustments and before I knew it I was the John-117 (I had read the novelizations of all the games that had them) coming out of cryo-stasis on the Pillar of Autumn. It was awesome.
Eventually we hooked up the Gamecube and Rogue Squadron was nice and all but the Xbox was the system of the generation for us (my wife was converted very easily after seeing the Xbox in action, other than when Animal Crossing came along). We did end up picking up a PS/2 slim but I think it was used maybe twice (just like our PS4 this time around).
My wife even bought Steel Battalion for it when that was launched. We were on a first name basis with the game shop that generation and they were very envious when she did that.
Anyway, that Xbox was awesome and I am so glad that the Series X will support the games from it.

Been playing my original Xbox console lately. and having a blast with it. Been playing corvette on the original Xbox and, with the original Xbox  S controller combined. makes all racing games, I've played so far a lot more enjoyable on the Xbox rather then Xbox360. In my opinion, Also good to have a working original Xbox because it puts less wear and tear on your Xbox360. The triggers are vary comfortable to me right trigger to accelerate and left trigger for brake makes for a great experience :)

That has to be a thing with old versions of the softmod or something? I had mine soft modded 4-5 years back and I can swear I remember MechAssault working. It's no longer softmoded because I mod chipped it so I could use a unlocked SATA HD so I can't verify it.

I really got into the OG Xbox when it was released . The games resonated with me : Halo , Elder Scrolls III , Max Payne , Phantom Crash , Robotech Battlecry , Fable , MechAssault , Black just to name a few . Yeah some were multi platform but why bother , everything played great on the Xbox and generally looked better too . I never had any problems with mine , still works great today . I need to dig up my old Xbox and PS2 games and enter them into my collection , I boxed them up when I moved years ago and they're still buried the closet . I ended up repurchasing some to replay recently because it was easier than finding them lol .
I had no problem with the Duke , but I really liked the S controller when it was released .

I have the Dukes, S´s, and a ¨powerpad¨ controller thats even bigger than the original duke. I know it gets a ton of hate but thats just from kids, I have smaller hands and the S is one of my favorite gaming controllers period, but if I play with a duke for more than 20 minutes it starts to feel just as natural. If youre still having trouble I dont doubt that having a duke would fix everything.

I didn’t have a lot of games for the original Xbox that weren’t also available for PS2, but the exclusives I had made the Xbox well worth the purchase. Between KOTOR 1 & 2, Panzer Dragoon Orta, Outrun 2, and Tron 2.0, I played it a lot.
Yes, Tron 2.0 is an extremely flawed game, but I got enjoyment out of it, mainly through the presentation and music, which really made me feel like I was in the world of the Tron movie.

My appreciation for the platform has grown a lot in recent months. I used to give preferential treatment to the PS2 back when I first got into collecting games. I think mostly because it was just so much more common, but also probably because I was all-in on the PS2 back in the day. I used to be of the mindset that I was only in it for exclusives on OG Xbox.

As of late, I've noticed a change of heart for a number or reasons. Most multi-plats are just better on the platform, also there's a lot better potential for backward compatibility across subsequent Xbox platforms. I'm constantly dreading the day that my 60GB PS3 overheats. Won't be buying another one of those, if it does.

I've been considering which multi-plats I actually want to re-purchase on Xbox that I already have on PS2. Xbox is my multi-plat console of choice for all gens going forward. It pretty much already was, aside from PS2. So yeah, I'm having a lot of fun hunting out games that are on the inexpensive side, compared to most everything else on the retro market right now. Averaging like $10 a game.

I like the fact that it has built in 20gig hard drive, it makes it so I don't need memory cards and on some games saving the game is much much faster, I love the fact that it can support 4 players without additional hardware becasuse most PS2's will not work even with the adaptor. overall I like the Xbox more then the PlayStation 2. the racing games feel more arcade and because of the hard drive :)

I decided to finally do the clock capacitor and the thermal paste on my first Xbox which is a Version 1.0 . I also found a seller on ebay that makes custom 3d printed fan mounts for the case fan and the GPU fan (Version 1.0 motherboards only) that allow you to use Noctua fans on both so I ordered a set of those for it as well . When I opened it I could only see what appeared to be a little leakage around the clock cap , but no visible corrosion . I desoldered it and the legs of the cap had a small amount of crust on them . Cleaned the motherboard up and put some Thermal Grizzly on the CPU and GPU . Now I'm just waiting on the fan mounts . I got that capacitor just in time , zero damage .
I'm psyched to have that one taken care of , I've been dreading looking inside and have been putting it off . I bought this one brand new and have good memories on it . I have two more OG Xbox's to go . Those should go faster as I won't be doing the fans in those probably and I already have all the tools and supplies out and ready to go .

#2 Xbox

This purple one has a problem . I tested it and it wouldn't even power on so I was fearing the worst . It's the later model and doesn't have the clock cap problem , but it has 5 bulged out leaky larger capacitors (3300uF 6.3v) . Apparently this is also very common . All of these are bulged at the top and 4 are leaking orange crap also out of the top . Ordered a set .

Update on #2 : I replaced the 5 bad caps and she fired right up , good as new . I also replaced the thermal paste and let it run for a few hours .

I've been lucky. I keep hearing about leaks in them. My original Xbox is still going strong. As well as my modded one.

I went three for three . All three of mine had leaky caps . The two with leaky clock caps would've eventually killed the consoles . Definitely worth checking once in a while .

Xbox #3 tested fine . It was another early model from 2001 . Inside the clock capacitor was leaking just like the first one . Cleaned the heck out of it , no damage again to the motherboard , installed a new Eaton Supercapacitor for the clock cap and put new thermal paste on the CPU and GPU . It should be good for another decade or two . I think this one I bought about ten years ago cheap because it wouldn't read discs . I ended up replacing the DVD drive and sticking it in the closet as a spare .

I ended up softmodding Xbox #2 and installing a 2TB HDD into it and an 80 wire IDE cable upgrade . I'm just filling it up with my games now . So far I'm liking it a lot .

I think the second controller had a big part in saving the console.
