Title: What is your principal goal collecting games?
Post by: mrkonasoni on September 05, 2020, 03:51:05 pm
START:

A long time ago I was part of another forum that died because reasons, and I used to have a lot of friends there or people that I liked to talk, I am a believer that joined this forum was another chance for meet more cool people, so like always I like to ask this question.

Whats is your most important goal or priority collecting videogames? After all I guess we all have an objective that we want to accomplish before passing away.

My only real objective right now is collect most Konami games and thats pretty much the only stuff I am buying right now, I have 115 Konami games and I want to have most, the reason is because I have an emotional connection with the company, they inspired me and helped me when I had depression and a lot of stuff more that I will save myself right now.

After that I guess collect most Sonic games and other favorite games that I wanted....

So whats your goal for collecting? whats your objective? The item that you need because you truly want it, I know that maybe talking we will get to meet better each other

Thank you for reading my post
I have always liked to play everything with a positive mind and being kind with people that is kind with me.

For the most part, I'd say, I'm collecting games that I have fond memories of. For instance, retro-wise, I still collect for my Sega Game Gear. On my list are essentially games that I've played or are linked to TV shows or movies I loved as a kid.... Micro Machines, Donald Duck Lucky Dime Caper, and Indiana Jones. The rest will be played via an Everdrive cartridge.

I don't anticipate ever having a full collection of games for any single system. I also don't anticipate having more than around 50-ish games per single system.... amend that to 50-ish physical games for modern systems.

I've even found that often I prefer doing projects (crafting) based on retro games or games I loved just as much as playing the actual game. Case in point, I've been creating shadowboxes for my favorite games of all time; making a wall of fame so to speak. I've done one for the original Ninja Turtles game for NES and I'm finishing up one for Jurassic Park on Genesis. Next after that will be Uncharted. It's a time killer, but I have great fun designing and building them.

To collect whatever I can for the more common retro consoles, since I rarely buy games from online stores, I shop locally unless I'm desperate to have a certain game. I now am close to being satisfied with what I got already. and now I still buy things locally to support a local game and electronics store, with buying games that don't have high cost the ones I don't have a proper working copy of, also games that look interesting,

I for example buy everything golf wise that don't cost to much. Unfortunately my health is not the greatest and I find it vary difficult to play my games. Due to a constant airborne allergies and migraine headaches on top of other things that make it hard for me to play my games.

It's been only around 5 years I've started VG collecting. At first my goal was to get most games and consoles I had when I was a child, then get the ones I always wanted or that I discovered and loved via emulation. I don't collect any game I don't intend to play. My priority is arcade games, shmups, run 'n guns. I absolutely love the Switch for that, and always keep an eye on the many limited-time release publishers out there, which are my absolute priority; I would hate to pay scalper's prices if I ever miss the release of a game I'm interested in (not that it didn't happened already). I know I'll have time to get the more popular titles at some point later.

I want to build my own Gaming Museum on my property.  A place where friends, family, and fellow gamers can hang out with their kids and not just see, but play all the games.  I want it to be a sanctuary of sorts, a temporary escape for people who are troubled by things going on in their life.
A drug den for gamers, kinda.  I imagine a very large room, bean bag chairs, Many TVs both modern and CRT, and shelves, so many shelves full of video games for every system.  Think, like a library only with a more relaxed feel.

I obviously haven't worked all the kinks out in my big plan yet, but I still haven't got nearly enough games to fill even three shelves.  So that comes first.

I try to learn everything I can about each game/console/memorabilia I get my hands on.  Date of release, behind the scenes info (The old Phalanx man was Bertil Valley, born Jan 01 1913, died April 09 2004, and aside from being the Banjo Guy, he owned a construction company, and he was a also a volunteer Santa Claus for 25 years.)

I guess I do want to "own" everything.  But I don't want to collect just for myself, that'd be boring.  I want others to enjoy it too.  I want to make people happy.  And video games are my passion, so why not share it?

I just buy what I want to play. And as I get older, that list continues to grow as I learn more about gaming.

My primary goal is just to have fun playing games. on the occasions when I find myself starting to buy something I probably will never play just because I don't have it I stop an remind myself of this fact. That doesn't mean I don't occasionally get home and wonder why I bought something. When that happens I try to find some way to enjoy it or redistribute it.

I don't care about boxes or manuals or anything like that. I have always found sealed copies as a bizarre thing to collect and not a lot of fun.

As for any completionism goals, I would like to get the last few games to complete my Lynx collection. The only reason for doing that is that after I get all the games I would have wanted anyway there are only three to five official releases left that I wouldn't have bought anyway and I picked those up along the way as filler in lot orders when hunting the others down or when buying my systems.

Mostly just stuff I want and enjoy, stuff I played as a kid even if they aren't good games.  If I had any real goal, it would be to get a N64 collection of games and the multi-colored console variants.  I'm not particularly collecting games right now, so its on the backburner, but someday eventually.

I think for me the main goal is accessibility. I want to be able to access any game in my leisure when I please. So gathering all the games of interest as I do helps that. Most of the time my games sit in storage or on my shelf but I still like the idea of having it there and ready should a certain interest to play a certain title arise.

The problem with the subscription services is that they often change their stock, adding new content and taking others away frequently, so that reassurance of playing a particular title is left uncertain. It's great for experiencing new things, but if you have an appreciation for older content, it's simply not an appealing option.

My main goal started out as a complete NES collection.
Over the years it has transformed into traveling all over looking for cool stuff and meeting cool people. It’s been a blast!

Well I have always said I wanted to collect every video game ever,of course I know I never will.Mostly I have nostalgia for Nes,Snes,Genesis,Dreamcast,Ps1,Ps2 and Xbox 360. These are the systems I want to find games for the most because their my favorites.Besides my principal goal being to play these games and have fun I also like the artwork and love to display them.

In my case, I think collecting was an opportunity to own some of the things I used to dream about when I was a kid...

At this point, Im just looking to have games that I truly enjoy and can see myself revisiting years from now which for the most part I have now. Anything that doesnt really fit that is gone. I'm no longer collecting for the sake of it like I used to. While I am adding, I am being calculated about what a buy now and not adding x game cuz its $5 and may possibly play it down the line as I feel I've reach a point where I dont want that anymore.

90% of my collecting goals right now involve the following:

- Sega Saturn (US and Japanese)
- CIB N64 games
- CIB SNES games
- CIB Genesis games
- New releases that interest me on the PS4 and Switch

I've been collecting for so long and have owned so much stuff that there's not that much else that really interests me. Don't get me wrong, I love video games and my collection, however the allure of very rare games have diminished greatly. Pretty much unless it's genuinely a good game or it's a game I have some sort of personal connection to I'm not terribly interested in it.

The other 10% of my collecting interests are an assortment of games on other consoles that I'd still like to own, but they are hardly a priority of mine.

Eventually I'd like to play every game I own, and if I can't see myself doing that I really see no need to own the game. This was part of the reason (along with reason price spikes in retro games) that I downsized roughly 15% of my collection. Also sort of as a goal on mine I'd really, really like to get into collecting pinball machines and arcade cabs someday. I currently lack the space to do this, but if that ever changes you can bet I'll be at arcade auctions tracking down games like Virtua Fighter, Area 51, House of the Dead, and Top Skater.

I think alot people on this thread answered my reason for gaming in some shape or form.

I think of games as books, pieces of art, and when you start  a game, you get teleported into the world.

I see it as looking thru a mirror (TV), a portal to another world, were you can explore, and experience people of that world's emotions.

If i want world full of horrors', it is at hands reach, and i am their. Resident Evil VII with PSVR.

If i want adventure and exploration, recently, Genshin Impact, but i would always play RPGs

If more of story telling, sit back and enjoy, Graphic Novels/Interactive games like Detroit

Be the hero, the Villain, Savior, Demon, etc etc.

As saying goes Gamer wears many Hats.

So Video Game Collecting for me, is me creating network of portals, that are at hands reach to traveler as unseen being to worlds beyond imagination.

I am the Portal Master. =) And i want as many Portals to interesting worlds as i can get get my hands on, that are worth visiting. (No Sports Games)

My principal goal collecting games is actually already reached:

I wanted to build myself a room containing my favorite consoles, plugged and ready to play, offering a not-too-small library of gems and must-have games for every system. As I went on collecting, some shelves grew bigger than expected, and there are still some items "missing", but all in all, I'm very satisfied with my little gaming-lab, as I call it  8)

All of my collecting goals basically dried up when I finally hit the tipping point of having too many games to play, or owning games I'd never play and have no care about. So I suppose now my only goal is to get all of the Transformers related games, but even so, it is not active. I'm just focusing on collecting other things right now and not really doing anything with games.

My main goal with game collecting is to only buy games that I will enjoy playing.  I do a lot of research before seeking out specific games to make sure it is something I will enjoy.  I don't buy a ton of games because I also collect Blurays/UHDs, music CDS, books, comics, and Magic cards so I have to split the amount of disposable income I have between all these hobbies.  Sometimes I will blind buy a game but I usually end up regretting it, lol  :-[

I guess it's less of a goal for me and more of a hobby. Video games have been with me throughout practically my whole life and have gotten me through a lot of very tough times. It is now my biggest hobby.

Growing up and watching youtubers like AVGN and more recently Scott the Woz, it's always been a dream of mine to have a room dedicated to video games, with shelves of games just lining the walls. I'm still not that far but hey we all gotta start somewhere, yeah?

My reason for collecting has changed many times.

First I didn't really collect. I just "never let go of stuff I got" and continued to get stuff.

Then while clearing out my garage one day I found a pencil and paper wish list I had made when I was a kid for if I ever "got rich".

So for a couple of years I worked on that until I checked off everything.

Then I moved on to obscure/lesser known titles and hardware.

Currently I collect physical releases of high quality repros, homebrews and translations of games for NES, SNES, and Genesis.

I also started collecting and restoring full size arcade and pinball machines.

As I get older my ability to "keep up with the current gen", for lack of a better way of putting it, has been faltering. I own Xbox One X and PS 4 Pro and several current gen games but rarely play them. I tried and failed to land pre-orders for PS4 and Xbox SeX.

I still have the desire to game and want new fresh experiences. But I can't devote any consistent time to it and I have too much on my mind that's pays the bills. So sticking to long games with intricate stories has become very hard for me even though I love those games. Switch has made it easier but I hate that everything is digital.

Both my work and life is rather high stress nearly all the time. Even before covid there have been large swaths of time where it just wasn't practical for me to leave the house or get away.

So my collector/gaming space has kind of become a mind palace, sanctuary, safe space if you will.

Each arcade game I have (and my baby Attack From Mars Pinball) connects me to specific memories and times in my life that I don't want to forget.

It's kinda like a time capsule. But I live in it. Sometimes I will just sit on the couch and listen to everything as it runs in attract mode.

I also like to tinker. Arcade and Pinball Machines require a lot of tweaking and tuning to keep running at their prime. Reading manuals and testing/fixing boards is (usually) relaxing to me and I enjoy learning how something I cherish from my past actually works under the hood. Restoring something as old as I am to near new reminds me that old does not have to mean broken, worthless, or obsolete and sometimes I really need that reminder as I get older.

At first I was just collecting and buying games that I wanted to play. I then started just buying every game I could get my hands on. (Buying in bulk, buying from thrift store etc) Ever since I started to buy game like that I have a new goal; I want to have a room in my house that someone could walk into and be able to play whatever games they want to.

I've seen photos of collectors having a lot of games. It's what inspired me to collect for games. Their is millions of different video games out there. On PC there is even free alterations of many PC games out there and it's almost infinite, downloading free mods and custom content for your game is not illegal and they can give you an excuse to play a game you love differently

for example if you know where to look online you'll find some games have new level's more worlds new fan made content, more storylines and more

same here

(edit) I don't buy my games to ever turn a profit, I buy  for the enjoyment of the games, I am aware of Free ROM's but I don't want to do anything illegal even if the chances of getting caught are slim for most people, I believe that most modern consoles are garbage, and as the gaming industry gets more greedy it's only a matter of time before the Law hammers down on pirating software, and backing people into a buy digital only empire, which gives all the copyright holders of these modern games the ability to charge more and more money if you want to play there games. even if you already gave them money.

What kind of shit is buying a 500GB console to only hold 12 freaking games in some cases, not to mention running up your internet bandwidth to download them

I find it really difficult to answer this question as my attitude changes.

I started a long time ago as a gamer and like most people didn't take care of much but as I grew older I appreciate everything that goes into producing a game.....especially with old games....the soundtrack, the box artwork, the manual.  It's a piece of history - might be a crap piece of history but even still :)

I have no goals but I like genres mainly RPGs,  point and click, platformers and I just collect what I like.  I have a mix on all platforms from 2600 through Amiga to PS2 being probably the latest iteration I will look at just now.

To have all the games worth playing in the best version and hardware possible for each of them. Easier said than done. Especially as older games are now starting to get re-released in sometimes improved versions.

I will never need to get a Playstation given the games are best played in PS3 or PSVita for example. Old DOS games you can run on DOSBox or reworked and often with fixed bugs on GOG releases. Blade Runner is a good example of a difficult to play game on current systems if not the GOG version.

I just buy what looks interesting, and hope to one day play it. I used to have goals, such as a complete US Saturn collection but then I realized I don't care and it felt like I was buying filler for clout.

Eventually I even ended up selling off my Saturn collection, except for the original games I had as a kid.

Now a days the only "goal" I have, I guess would be keeping up on the Castlevania collection. Other than that, there's no end objective for my game collection.

For me it started out as finally being an adult with disposable income and the ability to buy the games I loved (Sega Megadrive, PS1) when I was a little kid, and then branch out to those games/consoles that were too expensive/not practical for my parents to buy. It has morphed over the last decade into a modest collection spanning games I loved to play as a kid, and continuing to purchase and play games that I find interesting.

My end goal is to have a collection that can be passed onto my son and that we can play together as he grows up!

I started off with trying to collect what I played back in the day. However along the way I soon discovered allot of other games that I really liked

Nowadays I collect games that I'd like to play.

But to keep the collection less cluttered I'll only add stuff to the collection that is cib and in excellent upwards condition. I do also have a soft spot for import exclusive games. While i do buy and play modern games I'm okay with digital if the price is allot cheaper. For hardcore collecting I limit myself to mainly retro. Current and last gen doesn't give to much nostalgia for me so I don't need physical with perhaps some exceptions. Amiibo and modern CE etc not my cup of tea.

As far as goals go. I already reached my collecting goals some time ago everything that I add to the collection nowadays is just the cherry on top. No rush for me to get certain things for the collection pretty pleased with what I already have.

Started just to get those old games that I used to play when life was pure and easy for me, after a couple of years when my first daughter was born and after seeing that I was keeping some of these games just to collect dust is when I started to sell some of them, don't regret it cause have been able to take them on vacations several times, right now and with a second kid am only collecting just those games that am playing, correction, that we are playing because we are a family of gamers, at our collection some games belong to my wife and some others to my daughter, really hope that in a couple of years my son can ask me for some games, he has autism and even when a lot of people have told me that he might not gonna have a normal life I decided not to listen to these kind of comments.
