Title: Consoles you got at launch versus ones you waited and got later
Post by: Warmsignal on September 18, 2020, 01:15:56 pm
So here's a fun little collector's poll. Which consoles did you end up getting at (or near) the launch window, and which consoles did you wait a long time to finally pick up? This question is regarding pretty much any generation of console.

The current/outgoing gen I did get a Switch about 8 months after launch, but the PS4 I didn't get until 2017, and the XB1 I didn't get until 2020.... Really the only consoles I remember acquiring anywhere near when they were first released would be Switch, Dreamcast, and N64. Most of the other consoles I've gotten over the years were out at least a few years before I picked one up. I usually don't get new console fever when something releases. Like, I would never be one of those people lined up outside of a retail store at 4 AM trying to buy the new game console. That's way overboard. Even if it's a new console that I'm interested in, I can easily wait months if not a few years to grab one.

I'm sure everyone is doing cartwheels over the PS5, but a new PS or XB console is not even on my radar right now. It could be years before I consider it, it's just not a bid deal to me. I've got so many games and consoles as it is.

Never got a console at launch.

It seems possible that for me the closest was the Dreamcast, which I would guess would be maybe 3-4 months after it came out. I remember the game I bought with it was Elemental Gimmick Gear.

Similarly, I can only really guess on other times I got a console. I believe both the Saturn and PS2 I got about a year after they came out. The PS2 was the second US model. The Saturn had been a rental unit.

Nothing else was even close.

I waited at walmart right after work for 37 hours for the ps3. I end up falling a sleep on the hiring machine spread eagle. To be woken up to free chicken and also the ps3. I was like 5th in line then went to gamestop to pick up 1 there same day. I also got the core version of the xbox 350 I think I was like 7th in line didn't really wait long like 20 hours at walmart.

I never gotten a console at launch, but my family bought me one A PlayStation 1, and I never took it home so technically it was my dads and my sisters console, I only played on it when I visited my family. I think I got it in 1999, but can't be sure.

No way I'm paying $500 for a console. I've never bought one at launch.

Hard for me to remember exactly, I got the PS2 maybe 6 to 8 months after launch as a birthday gift, and I might've bought the 360 around launch.

One I specifically remember getting is the Wii at launch, sitting in the car with my buddy as it was pretty cold out, before having to stand outside the Walmart because people couldn't wait and started lining up, picking it up with Twilight Princess.  The next one I remember getting at launch since it was more recent was the Switch.  And now the Playstation 5 will be the latest.  I think I might've got the Wii U at launch or around it, but I don't remember exactly.

All I ever got at launch was the Nintendo Switch. Honestly, it wasn't worth owning until Super Mario Odyssey came out. Lots of other systems like Wii, Wii U, 3DS, GameCube were gifts are purchases a year or less after launch.

I get nearly every Nintendo system at or near launch (within 6 months) since SNES. Otherwise, I waited in line for PS2 launch, got PSP and Vita very early (within months), and that's about it.

Most others I've waited for some kind of price drop or well-priced bundle.  Having purchased systems both at launch and waiting, I have every intention of waiting for a while before getting next-gen.  Not only might I save on hardware costs, but there'll be a greater library of games to peruse.

I got a switch at launch so I'd know I had one when Splatoon 2 came out. Got mine in my backwoods walmart without a fuss. Nintendo handhelds are usually high priority for me. I also had a launch day New 3ds. Otherwise, I tend to wait on consoles to price drop. They don't usually have a good launch library anyway. Now though it's hard to want consoles at all when PC is an option. I find myself getting most ps4 games on the switch or PC instead.

Interesting question.
I’m usually not someone who will wait in line to pick up a console on launch day; it’s a waste of time.
The only one I did that with was the Dreamcast, but I happened to work at a Software Etc store at the time, so it was simpler than waiting in line with the regular customers.
So, here’s a list of when I got certain consoles (the ones I remember, at least)

Atari 2600 - bought for me by my parents maybe around ‘83
NES - got one probably in ‘88, after I played my friend’s.
Game Boy - got one for Christmas ‘89
Genesis - bought it from a high school classmate, sometime in late 1990
SNES - got one for Christmas ‘91 (but I secretly got it out and played it beforehand :D)
PS1 - honestly don’t remember when I got this one.
Saturn - bought from Toys R Us on deep discount shortly before it was discontinued
PS2 - got one shortly after Christmas 2000
Dreamcast - as mentioned, got it release day

Everything from original Xbox on, including PS3, X360, Wii, PS4, and Switch were bought long after release.

The only consoles I've ever bought at launch were the Wii, PS3, and Switch. I've got/bought several other consoles within a month or so of launch like the Dreamcast, PS2, and N64, but not actually on launch day.

I got a switch at launch, only time I ever bought a console at launch, just because i had the money for it.  I have a ps5 preorder right now, but may cancel it- only thing i want to play at launch is demon's souls and I've already played though that game a million times. I love it, but I need a bit more than a remake of a game I love.

I'm not the kind that likes buying consoles at launch; the closest I would say was the Nintendo DS Lite given I bought it sometime around the release of StarFox Command. The PS3 and PS4 are the longest I've waited to get a console, as I got he former sometime in 2013 and the latter quite recently on Black Friday.

The only console I have ever gotten at launch was the Switch. Being able to play BotW portably was a big deal for me, even though I didn't use it nearly as much as I thought I would.

I got both the Wii and the Xbox One right near launch. Wii U was pretty close, but I can't really remember. None of them were really things I was super-hyped for, it was more of an "I'm here, it's in stock, and I've got enough for it." kind of thing. I have gotten quite a few special edition consoles at their specific launches though (Halo 3 & Halo Reach 360s and Pikachu 3DS XL), and with those, it was because I was upgrading from the base version anyways, so I might as well get a special one.

In any of the cases though, I don't regret getting them at launch, as I still put enough time into them that a price drop would be a moot point in terms of value.

I haven't before but the PS5 might be the 1st time I do.

The problem lays with my PS4, as the PS5 is backwards compatible with 99% of PS4 games, it will leave my PS4 redundant - Had that console utilised BC it would have use but if I can experience everything my PS4 has to offer on my PS5 - Why keep it?

So I have made a pre-order, I'm planning to trade in my PS4 Pro at launch and hopefully get a decent value off it - I fear if I do this say least 2021 the value of the PS4 PRO will drop further than the PS5's asking price.

I'm still a little apprehensive in buying 1st stock, of course there may be a PS5 Pro released later 2022 but am I really going to hold back on a new console until then - nope.

I bought these at launch:
PS2, PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, Xbox One and Wii.

They were all preorders except for the Wii and PS2.

I wasn’t planning on getting a Wii at launch. I told myself if any are in stock on day 1, i’m buying it. I ended up getting the itch the night before release. I shot over to Bestbuy at around 4am on release day and was about 40 or so in line.

For the PS2 I remember working a double shift so I could have the day off at launch. Preorders weren’t really a thing at the time, so first come first serve. I was watching TV with my girlfriend around 6pm the night before. They showed a news clip of people lining up outside stores for the release. I told her, “I gotta go!!!” She thought I was crazy, but went with me. We passed by 15-20 stores with lines wrapped around the buildings. I finally ended up at Circuit City with only about 10 people in line (around 8pm). The people in line said they had 16 available. I told my girlfriend “I’m staying. Call your sister or take my keys if you want a ride home”. She took my car and brought back a sweatshirt and blanket. Her sister picked her up a little later. Circuit City forced you to buy 2 games at launch (one being Fantavision), if you  wanted the console. Ended up marrying the girl

The most special launch for me was the Dreamcast one. 9.9.99. I was working at FuncoLand at the time and it was the first midnight launch I ever did as well as the first launch system I ever picked up. Of course I'm picking up the system with a couple of games...and for some reason Final Fantasy XIII w/the strategy guide.  :P

Was working at GameStop when the PS2, Xbox, and GameCube came out and worked all three midnight launches. All three of those systems ended up not working and required replacements. That, coupled with the atrocious launch of the XB360 and the RRoD REALLY soured me to any subsequent intentions of buying launch console systems. I'm pretty sure I picked up the Neo Geo Pocket Color at launch but didn't for other portables.

The last system I bought on launch was the Switch. I kinda regret getting it as I knew they'd put out a special edition system later (I REALLY wanted the Animal Crossing one) but BotW was amazing looking and I really REALLY wanted to play it.

Definitely sitting out the new ones coming out this year and when I do get them it'll be the ones with the optical drive. None of that discless nonsense for me!  :P

I got my PS4 in April 2014 so not long after launch. That was pretty much the first time you could find them on shelves.

I may have gotten my GBA Christmas 2001? Not sure if it was 2001 or 2002..

After thinking about this some more, I believe I also got the Wii within its launch window, maybe similar to how I got the NDS Lite, although it was mainly by happenstance. I remember being at Sam's Club and coming across a friend who had a very odd-looking package–almost looked like a big plastic bubble–that had the console in it bundled with a game. At the time Sam's had a rather modest gaming section and they had set up some tables with these bundles on them—some had more than one game, others included some extra peripherals; I, however, got the last bundle with only one game, which was Twilight Princess. At the time, while interested, the Wii wasn't really on my radar, but just as with emporerdragon, it was one of those "I'm here, it's in stock, and I have the money, so why not" moments.

Lastly, just like the PS3 and PS4, the GameCube is another console I got very late—a whole decade and some change later, which effectively makes it the console I've waited the longest to get.

So far, the only consoles I got at launch were the Vita and the PS4.

Here in Japan, shops are distributing one online ticket for each client for a chance to preorder the PS5. If a person is selected, he or she will have the opportunity to preorder the console by the end of the month.
I got tickets from three stores and I'll wait and see. Even if I'm not lucky, I won't get mad as I actually don't have so much interest on the PS5 yet... Haha
Anyways, I think it's a fairer system than all the crazy shit we saw happening in the US recently...

At launch:
- Game Boy Advance - June 2001
- GameCube - Nov 2001
- Nintendo DS - Nov 2004
- Nintendo Wii U - Nov 2012
- Nintendo Switch - Mar 3, 2017

Later:
- NES - Christmas 1989 (4 years after launch)
- Game Boy - 1994 (5 years after launch)
- Super Nintendo - 1995 (4 years after launch)
- Nintendo 64 - Sep 1997 (1 year after launch)
- PlayStation - 2000 (5 years after launch)
- Xbox - 2002 (1 year after launch)
- Playstation 2 - 2003 (3 years after launch)
- Nintendo Wii - Christmas 2006 (1 month after launch)
- Playstation 3 - 2008 (2 years after launch)
- Sony PSP - 2009 (4 years after launch)
- Nintendo 3DS - Jun 2011 (3 months after launch)
- Playstation 4 - 2016 (3 years after launch)

Probably won't be getting anymore consoles at launch. There's just not enough time and games at launch and systems are too expensive. Plus with the rate of "Pro" and "Slim" models coming out I might as well wait for the upgrades. The few consoles I got at launch was just after I started working and driving myself places so I was able to get GBA and GCN at launch. And DS, Wii U and Swtich I was just super excited for and got them immediately. DS and Switch were preorders, the rest I just got lucky. Wii would've been a launch console for me as well but couldn't find one then, but got lucky a month later after Christmas.

Okay, scratch that! My Wii is post 2008, which definitely means I didn't get it around launch.

In recent memory, the console I brought closest to launch was the PS4 for xmas 2014 so about a year after it launched. I was very keen to get one so I didn't wait to long. However, as much as I love it my model has numerous issues like ejecting of discs and controllers disconnecting. These made me consider whether I should have waited for a newer improved model.

As a result I waited till this summer to get a Switch, so 3 years. This is was just allow problems to be fixed and allow myself more buying options for console models, accessories etc. Unfortunately there seems to be very little variety in accessories such as pro controllers. Nevertheless I am glad I waited because my Switch has a better battery life.

In my console buying days I'd only ever bought the Xbox 360 at launch .

I was fashionably late buying the PS2, Xbox, PS3, PSP, and the Xbox One.

It's nice to have a stack of games before I buy the console .

I'm going to count the launch window as being within 6 months of launch for time frame purposes.
 - PS1 (Christmas '95)
 - Dreamcast (launch day - first system I bought myself)
 - PS2 (March 2001 - tax return)
 - PSP (launch day)
 - PS3 (1 week after launch)
 - PSV (launch day)
 - PS4 (launch day)
 - Switch (launch day - gave to kids in a huge clue hunt the following April when Mario Kart released)
 - PS5 Optical (preordered)

The last console I bought at launch was the PS2.  Since then I have waited 6 months to a year before buying a new console and I don’t plan on changing that anytime soon.

I think I got the 3DS and Vita at launch, have cycled through other models since then.

I got the Wii U, PS4, and X1 at launch.  Wii U in general was a regret and disappointment, but it got used way more than the PS4/X1 in its first year of release than the others.

Here's all the launch consoles I've gotten over the years.

PS2
The first launch console I ever got, my mom got in line at a Best Buy while I was at work and once I got off I took her place. I didn't ask her she wanted to do it for me. The system ended up having a laser eye problem reading PS1 and Blue back discs later on and I had to replace it.

XBOX
My bro worked for Comp USA and was told if he wanted to get an XBOX on launch he could but he had to buy a bunch of warranties to get it. I gave him the money to get me one and I got it and Never had much issue with it. Still runs like a tank. Waste of money on those warranties (lol)

GAMECUBE
I remember getting in line at a Walmart right before they opened and rushing back to electronics and getting my little Black Launch Box. Still own it to this day, never had any issues with it.

PS3
Toys R Us was taking pre orders on the PS3 and the Wii on the same day, I camped out all night and was 3rd in line. we where told we could pick one, I picked the PS3 that was backwards compatible. Later it turned out to be harder to get a Wii then the PS3. Still own that system and it works fine.

PS4 & XBOX ONE
Didn't have any issues getting these consoles on launch, just was at Gamestop asked about pre orders and I put money down on both of them.
Both had no issues, still run to this day.

SWITCH
My Gamestop had a midnight opening to sell the console and when I got there I was 2nd in line and got a system and BotW. There was a small hand full of people there not to crazy. Never had any issues with the console still runs great.

XBOX ONE X
I wanted the Scorpio Edition and Gamestop sold out of pre orders and I thought I was screwed, I later saw Amazon posted pre orders and got one through them.
I got it a day after launch date and its still running great for games, only issue I've had with with it it doesn't seem to want to play DVD movies anymore.

SWITCH LITE
I wanted the Limited Edition Pokemon version. I was at Gamestop and they said they where out of in store pre orders but I could order online. So I had to pay the whole thing down and it came in the mail. I honesty have not opened the box. lol

PS5
With Sony dropping surprise pre orders and it was right as I was starting work, I tried to get my bro to get a pre order but it was too late. I was online on my phone trying to get though any place to get a pre order in with no luck. Best Buy was late with their pre orders and went up at midnight, it took me three hours of error screens and refreshes to finally get a pre order through. So far it hasn't been cancelled.

XBSX
I was stuck at work till 3am before I could go see if people where camping out side Gamestops. I get off and dash to the main store in my area and see there and see along line of people camping outside the store. The store had posted on their door they where only had 8 Series X pre orders, so I rushed to a smaller Gamestop and see 3 people camping out. They posted 4 Series X pre orders and I just stayed there. Once they opened I got my pre order done.

The rest of the consoles I got after launch date,

The Wii U I was in a Shopko and just happened to see one on the shelf and bought it a week after launch.
The system had issues booting up and I had to send it to Nintendo for repairs, haven't had an issue with it sense.

The XB360 I remember I had to work and again my mom offered to wait outside to help me get one, but she was sick with the flu and I told her no, I'll wait.
I got one about 3 months later and of course it got the red ring of death. I think I had to replace my 360 more then any console I own.

I picked up a Wii about 3 months after launch, people wanted to play Wii Sports and I was bringing it to game parties. Still runs fine never had an issue with it.

As for a PS4 Pro, I didn't feel the need to get one right away. My first and only Pro is the 500 Million Special Edition.
