Title: Must-have Atari 2600 games
Post by: koemo1 on January 03, 2021, 06:39:17 am
Hey everybody!
For my 2021 resolution, I want to pick up an atari 2600.
I didn't grow up with this system and therefore have no idea which games are good and which ones are bad.
If you could recommend one or two games, that would be awesome!
Looking forward to your feedback

My parents got me an Atari 2600 back when I was maybe 5, around 1980-81. Our library wasn’t big, but I can tell you the games I remember having the most fun with:

Combat
Space Invaders
Space War
Air-Sea Battle
Asteroids
Warlords
Moon Patrol
Missile Command
Frankenstein’s Monster

I also recall having fun with the game Picnic, but after watching a video on it, I wonder if that’s the rose-colored glasses of youth clouding my judgement...

Plaque Attack
River Raid II
Journey Escape
Chopper Command
Demons To Diamonds
Demon Attack
Video Olympics

I'll leave more for somebody else. But I prefer playing these two PlayStation 2 Compilations rather than a real Atari 2600 Or any Atari Flashback console.
I don't like the fact that when playing a real Atari 2600, or Atari Flashback, you need to sit right next to the console, and keep hitting the reset button in order to keep playing if you lose the game a lot. If you don't hit the reset button the game stops completely until you hit that switch

Atari Anthology!

Activision Anthology

all games I mention except for Journey Escape are included in these two PS2 discs over 80 games plus 18 arcade originals on the first game listed and about 60 more games on the 2nd one

Atlantis, only because there is a rare version that can have Atlantis 2 ROM on it. One of the early competition carts, but Imagic sacced existing Atlantis carts. Not that I can say whether or not the game is any good.

I've pretty much given up on VCS but I may revisit one day by way of those game collections on PS2. I can only think of two games:

Asteroids
Yar's Revenge

Also know that by pressing a certain button on Atari anthology! or Activision Anthology games like

Street Racer (on the Atari Anthology!)

and most of the rest have multiple ways of playing. You can press a certain button on both these compilations (on certain included games) to have either a different game entirely, or 2 player game or different difficulty setting.  Manuals are included on both discs, there is unlockable content to.

Pretty much anything Activision did back then was gold.

A couple not yet mentioned (Though i didn't expect one of them to be)

Berzerk- Evil Otto...nuff said.

I'll catch flak for this but...ET. Besides it's negative place in gaming history, I actually found it to be an enjoyable game.

Empire Strikes Back

Edit: Another one I liked a lot, Dragonfire.

And Cosmic Arc was fun also

Gremlins is pretty fun. I also have enjoyed Pengo. If you can get Double Dragon at a reasonable price it's surprisingly decent for a 2600 game.

This is a thread for recommending titles for the Atari 2600 because the OP wants get the actual console.  Naming games that might be in compilations is fine, but suggesting compilations for other consoles does not help in that regard.

Have you thought about what version of the Atari 2600/VCS you want to get? there is 3 versions of the Atari 2600 consoles you can get,

The original  wood finish 1977 one

Atari 2600 "Vader"1982 [/b]

The newer model 2600  (The Atari 2600 JR)1991
(https://vgcollect.com/images/front-box-art/71826.jpg)

I once had an opportunity  to purchase a JR but all the buttons were entirely stiff and I could not move any of the switches. so I didn't get it

Thank you for all the recommendations!
I'm sure your suggestions lay the groundwork for a very interesting and diverse collection of Atari games!
I will most likely buy a woodgrain atari or Vader! The Atari Jr. and 7800 are options that just as viable but they lack the elegant look and go more for a cheapish plastic look.

There's always the more obscure Sears Atari consoles . The woodgrain Sears Video Arcade and sleeker Sears Video Arcade II . Or the Coleco Gemini for an oddity can still be had at a reasonable price though the solder joints tend to break on them , it's usually an easy fix .

I'm from Europe and we don't have Sears so I think these will be my only options haha

My 2600 favorites that still hold up well:

Kaboom!
The secret to what makes this game great is the paddle controller. The game gets faster and faster, and when you learn to keep up with it, it's awesome!

Crossbow
A port of the arcade game with good graphics. Hapless adventurers walk across the screen and you're the crossbow sniper that must move a cursor around to shoot the enemies that attack them.

Plaque Attack
Kind of like a fast-paced, dental version of Space Invaders. Various food items swoop in to attack your teeth, and you blast them with toothpaste.

Crackpots
Bugs attack your building, and your best defense is apparently dropping flower pots on them.

Warlords
Also based on an arcade game. With 1 player it gets a little dull, but with 4 players it comes alive as a competitive version of Breakout.
