Title: Top 50 Sega Game Gear Games

A few months ago, there was a slew of top 50-150 games for various retro systems. One that is often overlooked is the Sega Game Gear; which is my favorite handheld system. I would imagine most of us know about the history of Sega and how the rival of the Game Gear (Game Boy) obviously won out that battle, however, Game Gear still has a great library and lots to offer.

I thought it would be fun to bring back one of the "Top ##" threads for this year and start it off with a favorite of mine. If you don't have experience playing on Game Gear, I recommend you check some of the games out however you can that end up getting listed in this thread. Also, if you played the Sega Master System (SMS) and have a favorite, so long as the game is also on Game Gear in some fashion, you can list it instead. The two platforms shared most of their library.

Let's get this started....

1. Sonic Triple Trouble - Sonic was a massive pull as to why I asked for a Game Gear instead of a Game Boy and Triple Trouble was arguably the best Sonic game on the system. Sega had added in quite a bit from the Genesis versions including snowboarding which was only available on one level, but fun none-the-less. As per usual, great soundtrack as well.

I dumped a considerable amount of time into this game...

Not that it counts but when it got a Sega CD release I dumped as much, if not more, time into that one.  :P

It was my favorite Game Gear game but I did not have a Game Gear vary long because my friends stole it. but eventually another friend or neighborhood  resident returned the Game Gear to me but all the games were lost

If I was smarter I would have pursued the friends that took it. but back then I had no friends, and for some reason I didn't try to get it back I don't know why today. Probably because I didn't know which friend took it since multiple friends were over at that time.

Oh man. Glad you got it back eventually. I would have told my parents and had a police report made out and taken them to each "friend's" home.

Continuing with the list...

4. Jurassic Park - Each Sega Jurassic Park game was different. Something that I thought was pretty cool at the time. You play as Grant (though the character doesn't look anything like him in the GG version) playing through 5 levels. The 5th level is hidden until you've completed the other 4. Pretty neat T-Rex chase at the end of the game. You're supposed to capture each of the 5 main dinosaurs in the game to get the park back under control. I had a blast with it and played it constantly. I still play it from time to time.

6. Streets of Rage 2 - I missed out on the Streets of Rage series as a kid as it was seen as too violent by my parents and grandparents to give to my 10-13 year old self back when these were really popular. Luckily, eBay became a thing and I bought both games for the system later in life. To my fantastic surprise, both games were really good on the handheld; but the second really shines. Kudos to those that ported this in such a fantastic way.

unfortunately I don't think the police would have done anything back then, because just a few years ago a random kid somewhere in my neighborhood left a stolen bike on my front lawn. I immediately contacted my police and made a report, they told me that they couldn't do anything but I just had high hopes. and kept the bike where it could be seen.

So I left the stolen bike towards the back of my front yard and the good news is the owner of the stolen bike came up to my home. about a week or two later with a cell phone. and told me that was his bike. and I gladly gave him his bike back. I think the police might have given him my address, long story short. This kid got he stolen bike returned to him. and (I think) If I didn't make a call to the local police. the kid may have never got his bike back.

(back on topic)

there is another game I remember playing on my Game Gear it's a the best fighter jet simulation game I ever played on the Game Gear, and I think it's worthy of getting into more peoples GG collections

I was into real military class fighter jets when I was maybe 5 or 6? even had a jet airplane book that talked about more fighter jets like this.

Gameplay is nothing like Top GUN on the NES, it does not have a landing sequence as hard as Top GUN on the NES. this game has missions where you lock on and shoot down other fighter planes and bomb tanks and other ground targets below your fighter jet, and it's not fast paced from what I remember either.

it's a nice and easy game to get into for casual gamers. but I have not played a lot of fighter jet games in my life so take note.

I also recommend buying that Game Gear Screen magnifier I had and also and a Game Gear AC Power Cord to plug it into a power outlet to get a more better Game Gear Experience.

8. Road Rash - I only picked this game up about a year ago but had I known this was on Game Gear back in the 90's... I would have picked it up then. For obvious reasons, the game is slower than its Genesis counterpart, but the gameplay is all there. Kicking and punching or using weapons on other racers is always fun. Glad to finally have it in my collection.

01. Sonic Triple Trouble
02. Shining Force: The Sword of Hajya
03. Mortal Kombat II
04. Jurassic Park
05. Ristar
06. Streets of Rage 2
07. F-15 Strike Eagle
08. Road Rash
09. Defenders of Oasis
10. Ecco the Dolphin

I ended up getting Ecco as a birthday gift after my mother had already bought me the first Mortal Kombat but then overheard how violent it was. I was angry at the time, but when I got to playing Ecco, I actually really enjoyed it. Being able to explore under the water felt really cool on the handheld. Sure, it was tough as nails, but at the time, we were all kind of used to games being pretty hard. I actually remember beating it a couple times thanks to the use of level passcodes that I would get as I progressed.

11. Sonic Spinball - I'm putting this one before some of the other Sonic games because I simply had a blast with it. The pinball take on Sonic was actually a really good use of the character's traits. I could play that game for hours at a time and due to the nature of the game as a pinball machine, it was perfect for on the go. Even the soundtrack was good.

12. Land of Illusion - This was my second Game Gear game given to me a couple months after I got the system. I have to say that regardless that it's a Mickey Mouse game, it was actually really well done. The graphics for the time were incredible. The soundtrack was great. The level design and controls were well done. Not sure I've enjoyed a Mickey game as much as I did this one since finally beating it.

Apparently, not a lot of Game Gear players here on the boards. A sad reality.

14. Judge Dredd - Often overlooked, this is a great game across most the platforms that it's on. Once again, the Game Gear version will run slower than the Genesis counterpart, but considering it's running on a handheld from the 90's, this version is actually pretty incredible. Impressive enough is that they managed to get the various controls enabled needed to make the game playable. Then the game continues to be fun. I will say that the Game Gear version is far more forgiving. I've actually beat it a couple times.

15. X-Men - This was my first gaming experience with the X-Men. I watched the cartoon as a kid and had a basic idea on the characters, but I didn't really care. It wasn't a favorite of mine like Ninja Turtles was. This game changed it up for me a bit. The gameplay was pretty good. You start out as either Wolverine or Cyclops, but then other characters get unlocked as you progress... my favorite being Nightcrawler in this game. Fantastic game and it kept me playing for many hours.

13. Castle of Illusion
14. Judge Dredd
15. X-Men
16. Lost World: Jurassic Park

Lost World was the last Game Gear game released. I didn't even know of its existence until the 3-5 years after it released as I had moved on to other systems for a while focusing on PS1, Dreamcast and then PS2. When I discovered it, I immediately grabbed a copy on eBay, but sadly, all I could find was the cartridge only. The graphics were slightly improved but the fun twist was that they took a page from the Genesis game and allowed you to be a dinosaur. Sadly, not a raptor but a compy. I'm guessing that their thought process was that you're on the smaller Sega, so you get the smaller dinosaur. Still fun to play though. As the manuals are nearly impossible to find by themselves and I don't have room to collect all the boxes, I had the manual reprinted for it which turned out really good.

17. Battletoads - This is a faithful port of the NES game into the handheld space. It's obviously not a 1 to 1 but it is really close. The game plays quite a bit faster than I would have expected it too. While I haven't beat this version of it, the game is still quite a bit of fun. The only down side that I've experienced in it thus far is that you can't ride the dragon creatures that try to knock you down like you could in the NES game.

Was hoping for a bit more participation on this one but I'll keep it trucking until I hit 50 by myself if I have too I guess.

18. Incredible Crash Dummies - This was my third game for the system. It's very simplistic in nature... more akin to many of today's cell phone games minus the ads. You cycle through about five different mini games over and over with each round of cycles getting more difficult. I'm honestly not sure if there's an end too it or not. I think the best I did was 5-6 rounds of cycles. The mini games included jumping off of a roof, crashing a car, skiing, hammering explosives, and flying a rocket. The hammering game was the most boring.

Sorry for the large pic. It was either this one or one so small you could barely make it out.

It's the last one I can remember playing on my SEGA Game Gear. I think that the SEGA Game Gear was  and underrated handheld, But I guess Many people probably didn't own a SEGA Game Gear. Since everyone liked the longer lasting battery life of the Nintendo Gameboy Handheld.

10.62 million unit were sold according to Wikipedia today. And according to google the SEGA Game Gear had 364 games some games I don't even think are in the Database here. although I didn't count how many games were listed in this site current database.

a lot of the old Game Gears today are so old they have a screen problem :-\

That's quite accurate. Sega used cheap capacitors in their construction. Most Game Gear systems today have had their capacitors leak causing issues with the video and/or audio. With mine, the audio was completely shot. I had capacitors replaced on both the audio and video card but the guy that did it missed that the capacitors had leaked onto the main mother board and the leak eventually ate through it causing total failure. I managed to later get the motherboard completely replaced with modern capacitors and changed out the tube backlights with LEDs. I may eventually get an upgrade to the McWill mod, but time will tell.

Glad to say there's a large revival for the underappreciated handheld.

20. Sonic Chaos - Sonic was the bread and butter of Sega back when Game Gear was at the height of its lifespan. I remember getting Chaos and loving every second of it. The graphics were improved, you could be Tails if you wanted. They even made it so you could do the standing spindash from Sonic CD. The level design and music were great as per usual, however, the emphasis on rocket shoes and the odd bouncer that would stick to Sonic for a while made the game frustrating at times.

21. Streets of Rage - While not as good as the sequel the game was still incredible fun on the Game Gear. Being able to beat the heck out of street punks will always be top notch in my book. Sadly, I didn't get to play these games until I was an adult as they were seen as too violent by my parents. Incredibly fun games though and glad to have both in my collection.

22. NBA Jam - This is probably the only sports series that I enjoyed. I'm not a huge fan of sports in general, but the over the top action of being able to do insane dunks and break backboards and have the ball on fire and burn the net. It was all done so well and done at the right time. Then you had all the hidden unlockable characters and codes such as allowing you to dunk from half court. Fantastic. The handheld version is far more difficult to see but just as addicting. I dumped tons of hours into the original title and lived to shatter that backboard with an insane dunk.

23. Star Trek TNG The Advanced Holodeck Tutorial - While not as cool as the Genesis game as you never got to beam down to planets on this one, it still kept you engaged via ship battles and rescue missions. There was also a story to go with it, but it wasn't as good as one of the regular episodes as they were trying to constantly push the gameplay portions into being coherent. That said, the graphics were insanely good for the handheld and the soundtrack and effects were nearly spot on. Very impressive.

24. MegaMan - This title works really well on the Game Gear as the series was conceptualized for a two button system. The graphics are on par with what you would expect and the gameplay remains the same as the NES games. There are only four levels to play I'm guessing due to size restrictions on the small for the time cartridges. That said, I'm not sure these levels are on any of the other versions of MegaMan. These levels could have been built specifically for the Game Gear release. Sadly, I don't have this one in my collection due to how expensive it is to collect and I didn't know about it until around 2015.

25. Earthworm Jim - This is actually an amazing port of the Genesis game as there's almost no slow down but still looks great. Just like the Genesis game, this is very difficult. Granted, many games back in these days were difficult. I believe a majority of the game is intact. On a side note that's a plus, if you have the instruction manual, there's actually a full color comic explaining the story in it. Quite a bit of fun to read back in the day.

26. Micro Machines - While I primarily played this on NES back in the day, the Game Gear version is incredibly well done and matches the NES version in most ways. I believe it's lacking a couple characters and probably a couple tracks, but other than that, it feels identical. Another cool aspect is that you could play two player on one Game Gear system. A very odd thing to do as you essentially are sharing a screen and each person has half the system. Using three buttons to essentially go forward, left and right, are all that it required.

27. Gunstar Heroes - A well developed port of the Genesis game. There are times it slows, but the action is still intact. Luckily the Game Gear is not region locked as this was a Japan only release. The biggest issue I have with the Game Gear version is the music is just atrocious. Luckily, you just have to turn down the volume and you still get the fun gameplay.

28. Primal Rage - A fantastic fighting game. Basically King Kong vs Dinosaurs. The Game Gear version is missing a single character, Vertigo. Other than that the game is on par with the 16bit versions with the exception of one thing that made the game even more fun on the Genesis.... eating the worshipers for extra health. Fatalities are basically all intact which is great. I was usually Blizzard or Sauron. Good times.

29. Paperboy - A strangely addictive game. They did a great job putting this in handheld form. It feels really close to the NES game but wow is the soundtrack horrible. Also, the papers themselves look very odd when being thrown... something they fixed in the sequel. Still, the game is quite a bit of fun as you dodge the craziness of the neighborhood.

Sonic 2 is the game that started me out on the Game Gear as it came with it. While it lacked Tails being playable, the game improved on everything from the first Game Gear outing making it feel far closer to the Genesis games than what the previous one did but it still lacked the spin dash. That said... the levels were great, the music was incredible and the game was fun. I dumped dozens if not a hundred hours into this title. I remember celebrating getting the good ending via collecting all the chaos emeralds.

For my taste game gear hasn't aged well

The screen quality of the og system is pretty shit compared to other non backlit systems. For some folks a mod is required to make the games even playable which is quite a price barrier.

The actual games themselves even with mod upgrades even though they have color for whatever reason they usually look worse than stuff on the gameboy classic that has nice details for my taste. The sound is also pretty bad it really doesn't compare to a nintendo handheld. and I'm not a huge fan of both in the first place

Neo geo pocket has decent screen quality, sound and grapics if where talking a decent other handheld console. although lack of variety is a thing there. but that's one of the few actual replacements if where talking old handheld consoles. or the wonderswan but japanese and to many rpg's but I could see that one being great aswell. Not to mention that thumbstick  stick and the buttons in general are pretty premium quality in comparison to anything else in that era for my taste. If I'm being honest it even beats out consoles in modern times since no other handheld feels that comfortable to use considering lesser quality buttons and that thumbstick

That being said it really doesn't suprise me That nintendo dominated the handheld market. there ain't much out there in them retro days outside of Nintendo.

Mortal Kombat is a famous fighting game series developed by Midway (later NetherRealm Studios). The game was first released in 1992 and quickly became one of the most recognizable and influential in the fighting game genre. Here are some of the features and characteristics of the first "Mortal Kombat" game for the Sega Game Gear. The game offers a choice of seven different fighters, each with their own unique moves and special attacks. Some of the most famous characters include Liu Kang, Scorpion, Sab-Ziro, and others. For me, the game has become iconic, on par with Dota 2. I especially remember International 12 (https://egamersworld.com/dota2/event/the-international-2023-4kMCnezjT), which became my guide to the world of dota.

Busted out the Game Gear yesterday and played through Jurassic Park. Still holds up as a really fun game. My youngest enjoyed playing Crash Dummies. Warmed my heart to see him enjoying what I did 30 years ago.

Game gear in general or just certain games for it?

I see game gear just a bit less often than master system but still plenty. difference between the 2 is however that there is allot less interesting stuff for it. allot of the same stuff usually compared to other consoles. Seems like quite a limited library even if you include all the fodder.
