Just curious ???,
Whats the one item you have in your collection that makes you think "WHY did i buy that or "That was a mistake"? Mine would be this Double Dragon plug in and play joystick crap (https://vgcollect.com/item/172371) that plays the NES version of double dragon.
I got it from k-mart 2 years ago on a boxing day sale reduced from $30AUD to about $10 (and i still think i over paid) every time i look at it I think to myself what a joke.
Show me what you got..
-
Probably Adventure Time: Explore the Dungeon Because I DON'T KNOW! - Collector's Edition on 3DS. I thought it would be valuable like the game before it was but nope.
-
Me? nothing I can think of that I purchased on my own, I usually have a rule when it comes to adding a game to my collection so I don't regret at a later time. and I go by my instincts, I usually don't buy superhero based games or games that have to do with a movie that came out. My gut feeling is generally most movie or television show licensed retro games, i believe are frustrating and unfun games from the get go.
So I don't buy them even if they are cheap. also I don't buy rhythm games or most turn based RPGs. Or any Wii game because I don't like waggling the motion controls and Wii Mote for anything other then Wii Sports and it's Mii spin offs.
I don't buy educational games or puzzle games but the ones I have are inside compilations tied with other more interesting games. My tastes are
1 Sandbox Style Games
2: First Person Shooters
3: Racing Games
4: Mostly Any Sports Video Game
6: Video Games With Multiple Games included in one package
7: Most Arcade Based Games
8 Shoot em Ups
9: Beat Em Ups
10 Fighting Games
11. Easy Strategy Games
12. Third Person Shooters

Cyberpunk 2077 Collectors Edition.
I'll die with a scowl because of it.
-
I was gifted Pro Pinball: Fantastic Journey for the PS1. It's not a good game. It's a very bad game with only one pinball table. I regret that game coming into my life.
-
Cyberpunk 2077 Collectors Edition.
I'll die with a scowl because of it.
Imagine how those people who bought the console must be feeling :D
-
Reference specific games:
I'm not sure I still have anything in my collection that I regret. I would generally get rid of (sell off) the games I didn't like. I guess Division 2 (PS4) would be close as it took up over 100GB of space and I barely played it having not really enjoyed it much... but I got it when it was only $5 at Gamestop new. I feel I got $5 of entertainment out of it and then I deleted it off the hard drive.
See below for biggest regret ever.
-
Not really one thing but trying to keep up with early limited run ps4/vita games, i stuck around until release 150 orso after that i just got so burned out from their overload off releases each week, i bought maybe 4-5 games from them since then.
Should've known better the desire of these limited print games would fade away over time.
-
I occasionally question whether or not I really need my Virtual Boy. Especially since it needs a resolder.
-
Within a week or buying my house, Amazon did a Prime day and I bought both The Order 1886 CEs and the Destiny CE. Definitely regret those purchases.
Regret a lot of LRG purchases... a lot.
-
Not really one thing but trying to keep up with early limited run ps4/vita games,
You know what?.... Yeah... the entire Vita system is the biggest regret in my collection. Sony simply took a massive dump on Playstation fans that were early adopters of the handheld. I got the $300 3G one and spent another $100 on the largest memory card available. Then I got a nice case for it and a few launch games. Probably $600 spent at launch. Then after two years there was nothing releasing that was worth playing. Biggest disappointment in Playstation history. Biggest waste of money in gaming I've ever spent. In fact, if they were to announce a remake of Uncharted Golden Abyss for PS5, I'd sell my PSV and everything with it in a heartbeat.
Man the way the industry and Sony in general handled the Vita really pissed me off.
-
Maybe Kirby: Battle Royale on the 3DS. I'm a big Kirby fan and this game is just awful. I regret playing it and really regret buying it day one.
-
Maybe buying Codename S.T.E.A.M at launch for €45 euros only to see it reduce dramatically in price. I even saw a copy new for €1 several months later.
-
Maybe buying Codename S.T.E.A.M at launch for €45 euros only to see it reduce dramatically in price. I even saw a copy new for €1 several months later.
Yeah, I've got three extra copies sitting around that I got on clearance at like $1.50. I haven't even played my original copy yet.
-
Ninjabreadman for the Wii. The less I say about that game the better. I picked it up used at Gamestop for 99 cents. I could've bought some gum that would've been more entertaining and longer lasting that this game. I beat it in 30 minutes and shelved it, I never touched it again until I moved.
-
I have a couple PS4 LRG releases that I regret purchasing, the big one is Last Blade 2, which I just purchased a few months ago. I've discovered that I just don't like fighting games that much.
-
Never really have that. Even if I do buy something I'm disappointed in, that's what eBay is for. Turn that into money and get something else.
-
Probably Grand Tour Racing '98, Car and Driver Presents on Playstation 1, one the worst racing games i played. I received it with my Ps1 at the time.
-
Final Fantasy VIII Remastered - https://vgcollect.com/item/187415
It's not in widescreen... nope, I'm still not over it...
-
My regrets are mostly about money spent, especially from buying games at full price or first markdown but still never playing them by the time they are $5-$20. I don't regret the purchase, just the circumstances.
I've told the story before, but the game I'm most regretful for overpaying for is Yoshi's Cookie on the SNES. I still can't believe I blew $60 on such a simple game, especially since I already had the Game Boy version.
But the bigger regret than all of these is the games I didn't buy when I had the chance. NES Bonk's Adventure for $40, Saturn House of the Dead for $50, TurboGrafix Magical Chase for $39.99! Too bad I didn't know then what I know now.
-
I remember being at a Toys R Us in 2003 that still had tons of N64 stock. Like many, many copies of Perfect Dark, Conker's Bad Fur Day, and Mega Man 64 all for 10 bucks a pop. I only bought Perfect Dark, and while the other two aren't great games, you know how much people are paying for them these days????
-
Portal Runner for the ps2 is my most regretful item in my collection I hate this game so much I swore never to own one. But a friend who knew of my hate for this pile of garbage tricked me into excepting it as a birthday gift. By making me promised never to get rid of said gift. Now Im bound by my promise to keep it forever.
-
Dead Island.
The fantastic trailer combined with the game being made to be "Borderlands but with zombies" got me hyped up to do a day 1 purchase. Instead, I found myself disappointed as the game was boring and repetitive. You also had no sense of progression as everything respawns incredibly fast, the weapons break so quickly, and the level scaling was garbage. I can legitimately claim I had more fun playing through Monster High: New Ghoul In School than I did this game.
-
I got a tatakon for the switch this Christmas... the sensitivity is worse than I thought. I want to love it though. Might have to mod it.
-
Dead Rising 2 High Stakes Edition.
It’s packaged in a box that’s not even sealed, with the exact same copy of the standard game inside.
I took the game out and sold it, then repurchased another copy when it dropped to $15. Not too bad I guess.
Friday the 13th autographed Kickstarter. I think it was $150. The game kept getting delayed. When the game finally shipped, the autographed portion was a cardboard slip cover that was shipped separately.
-
I dont think there is a specific one. It's mostly the giant amount of pointless games I've acquired a couple of times going for full sets. I think I've broken myself of the habit now so it won't happen again.
-
My collection is definitely pretty tight at this point, or in other words I've trimmed most of all that unecessary, "why the hell did I buy that" fat. But if I had to say what I regret buying the most it would probably be all the JRPGs I've amassed over the years. Don't get me wrong, there are a lot of JRPGs I love, but I was obsessed with collecting them during the first 5 or 6 years I collected. I spent serious money on a few of them too. Sadly, I feel like my love for the genre is a fraction of what it was 20-years ago and unless it's a well known, AAA JRPG there's a good chance I'm going to get bored of it within the first 4 or 5 hours of playing, and then just never return to it. I came to this realization a few years ago and sold a ton of JRPGs I had on the PS3, PS2, PS1, DS, and several other consoles. I watched reviews on all of them before I sold them and just realized there's no way I would be able to get into them or enjoy them. I still have easily over 150 JRPGs in my collection, and to be honest I doubt I'll ever play, or at least enjoy half of them, but they're at least ones that looked interesting and fun enough to hold onto.
-
I'd say probably 1/3 of my Wii U collection. At one point I was going for a complete set but I kind of gave up on it. Fortunately, I've got all of the first-party and expensive releases, plus all of the great third-party gems, but I've also got a glut of Just Dance, Skylanders, and Dreamworks movie games that aren't worth owning unless you are going for the full set.
-
Just thought of another regretful purchase:
Final Fantasy Chronicles (PS1)
For those who don't know, this release consists of fairly straightforward ports with minor changes to dialogue here and there of Final Fantasy IV and Chrono Trigger. Final Fantasy IV doesn't have this issue, but Chrono Trigger for some reason has these unbearably long loading times every single time you go in and out of a new area or building AND when the game switches back and forth between the stats menu screen and the in-progress game. It's unbelievable that it got released like this, and I've never attempted to go further than the first time-hop sequence in this version, it's f***ing unplayable.
-
This question can be taken many ways for me.
First - Sport Games I payed a good amount for:
I am not a fan of sport games and I hate paying more then $10 for a game I know I'll never play.
I bought NCAA College Basketball 2K3 on GameCube not long ago for around $100...
Every time I see it in my collection I think "I can't believe I payed $100 for this stupid game"
But seeing it goes for well over that, I felt I had to buy it for my collection. :P
Second - Collector's Editions:
I get suckered to buy a lot of Collector's Editions and spend as much as $200 for them. While I love the steel books and some of the items I see these giant statues and these large giant boxes that take up so much space I think later "why did I buy that" lol
Third - Games that if people see them in my collection they think I'm a perv:
I love to collect weird games, I laugh at their weirdness and love showing people the odd side of video games.
But I do have a few I think... God... Why did I buy this... this game is messed up.
I own many "Adult" games and some from Japan are just so pervy that make me cringe at their subject mater.
But the funny thing is... Most people want to see those games. lol ::)
Thank God I'm limited to Consoles and handhelds so there's not a lot of them.
-
Destiny for the XBOX 360 and GTA V. Ugh, I loathe those two games. What a waste of $60 each.
-
I don't have a whole lot that I really regret. I mean, I have a lot of stupid shit in my collection; but I don't regret it too bad.
I'm going to go with Star Wars Battlefront Deluxe Edition. I paid $70 for that piece of shit. It looked so good, but let me down big time.
-
Destiny for the XBOX 360 and GTA V. Ugh, I loathe those two games. What a waste of $60 each.
What don't you like about GTA5? I'm not one of those people that worships that game or plays it 24/7 online, but I did really, really like it when I played it. Just curious.
-
For the most part I don't regret the games I buy, even ones like Fable 3 but there is one game that I do regret and that is Anubis II on the Nintendo Wii. This game is the very definition of shovel ware. Why did I buy it? Just because I needed a game to fill the spare spot in teh Wii bundle I was buying.
-
Dead Island.

Man, one of my favorite games of the generation. Level scaling was OK, except for vehicles. That was a mess, but they did fix it in the remasters.
I don't really regret anything I've purchased, as I don't go crazy on things. However, if I could go back- I probably would skip the XB1 and PS4. I have enough games on my 360 and PS3 to last decades....so I didn't really need them.
-
I've seen a few people mention LRG games and this is definitely my go-to as well.
This damn thing. I present to you Jumanji: The Video Game - Collector's Edition...

It's my own fault. I didn't do my due diligence to know that they would release it at retail in non-CE. Had I known it was going to get a regular release, I wouldn't have gone anywhere near the CE (though I doubt I would have picked up the non CE unless it was like $5).
That said, I've watched videos of older games I picked up from them and couldn't fathom sometimes how they made the decision to commit them to physical release. :P
On the other end of the spectrum is a game I do NOT regret owning (and something I paid full price for) is this...

I tend to stay away from shitty games (I usually don’t buy a lousy game just for the sake of having it) so I don’t have too many big regrets. I also can’t really include older stuff like NES games, since even though I do own some bad ones, at that time (late 80’s-early 90’s) it was harder to know what was shit and what wasn’t.
Two games I do regret:
Twisted Metal III (PS1): TM2 was a frickin’ blast, so I hoped TMIII would be more of the same. I didn’t know at the time that it was being developed by a different studio, and the game turned out to be pathetic compared to TM2.
Double Dragon 3 (Genesis): Bought this used from Media Play in the early 2000s. Took a chance since it was pretty cheap (like $6 or something) but the game is complete garbage and isn’t even worth the small amount I paid.
-
Final fantasy X-2. I'm not a super huge fan of X or XII but X-2 is just on a different lvl
I'd honestly rather play sonic 06 :P
-
Destiny for the XBOX 360 and GTA V. Ugh, I loathe those two games. What a waste of $60 each.

I just couldn’t ever seem to have the same kind of fun as GTA3, VC and IV. The wanted system is too frustrating and the story wasn’t as engaging so I just ended up shelving it and haven’t touched it since.
-
I don't buy absolutely nothing that I don't consider a fine game when watching a trailer or gameplay.
But since I read a comment from the thread, I can agree that a lot of games I regret buying are from Limited Run Games.
It was from the time the business was starting and it was 2017 or 2018.
I certainly disliked buying some titles and after read the dissapointment and some comments in the forum.
I am surprised that I don't have nostalgia about those times when I am so attached to the past.
-
I have to give myself credit in that I always do my homework before I make a purchase. I don't regret anything, really.
If I have to pick something, it would be similar to what Biking said about JRPGs. When I was more of a novice collector, I had a much greater interest in the genre and I used to seek them out. Never paid too much for them, but I ended up buying more than I'd ever want to play in reality. Not a big deal, because they're an easy sell.

When I was a new into collecting I mainly only bought cheaper games that I was currently interested in. Then as I grew my collection to the point I am more satisficed, I started picking up more expensive titles.
With my lucky experience with a repo game cartridge just recently. I plan on looking for more cart only repos on purpose, and buying more in the future If I can't find any originals first. because that is how impressed I am with the fake I own now
I would have gotten a real copy but those are not easy to find to my knowledge it would seem logical that originals are hard to come by, and if Nintendo still made this game and not just an online download they could remove in the future I would have gladly purchased this game, from Nintendo. I think Nintendo should sell a few repos themselves if they don't want people copying their work

you can also just buy an everdrive instead of tons of repro's
And yes repro's will work pretty nicely in wich the differences aren't that notable if actually existent. have you been living under a rock in the past 5 - 10 + years?

If you're not sentimentally attached to it, and you think you're not going to use it, it wouldn't hurt selling it, methinks.

Hindsight is 20/20, my friend.
This question can be taken many ways for me.
Given the gargantuan amount of games you own, I reckon you'd have plenty of regrets, but given you're more of an archivist/preservationist at this point, I bet you're willing to live with more than one.
I don't buy absolutely nothing that I don't consider a fine game when watching a trailer or gameplay. Well, at least you took that as a learning experience. Truth be told, though, I might break my own rule and end up getting Scott Pilgrim—I really want that damn game.
Anyway, I don't have anything in my collection that I regret owning; I pride myself in taking the time necessary to find out if whatever game I'm interested in is worth my time or not. Nonetheless, if that were the case, I wouldn't hesitate a nanosecond in selling/getting rid of whatever I regret having in my collection - there's no need to keep crap I'm not going to enjoy.

Maybe the most embarassing thing that I have in my collection is this 'American Pie' UMD movie. https://vgcollect.com/item/57123 (https://vgcollect.com/item/57123)
It's just a pretty weird movie and I think I just got it at a thrift store for close to nothing.

Nah, nothing weird (or wrong) about it - that movie is one of the best things from the last century.

Suzuki TT Superbikes. There's a review online that perfectly sums up the dissapointment of this game, so I'll just copy-paste it here
"Left my wife for this game. Best 2$ I've ever spent! 5 out of 5!"

true. I mostly just got it for the collection factor of it all.

I don't regret the Vita, I'm just sad it was snubbed by developers, publishers and Sony themselves. I still think it's a cool little piece of hardware despite having so little to play on it.

I jumped the gun with my response just cuz I wanted a response because at the end of the day, I do still have my Vita and by all accounts I dont intend on getting rid of it. That said, what you said falls in line with why I thought the Vita felt short with the lack of support which is a shame because the PSP which I really liked was awesome. Yes you can still play digital PSP games, PSone classics but the Vita library for me was lacking. I primarily wanted it for Persona 4 Golden so Im not mad about that. Also Uncharted: Golden Abyss and Muramasa. So if anything regret is a strong word with the Vita but rather disappointed that it was left to die so to speak.
-
Agreed. I love the Vita and feel like it has all of this untapped potential. I initially got it for Ys but I enjoyed some different titles on it while I waited for Ys to be released.

That's fair. ;)
The thing with LRG is they've licensed some really good stuff like Wonder Boy, DariusBurst, The Game Paradise and a bunch of other shoot em ups and platformers (like Shantae...how could I forget). That said, they let that fame get to their head and they put out a bunch of stuff that probably did NOT need a physical release. No doubt you'd be quick to say that it's on the buyer's part to do their due diligence on releases and that's certainly true. With them I wasn't on board from the get go, I think I started picking up games until Mystery Chronicle got released? I kept buying every week at first because they were Vita releases and I wanted to beef up my Vita collection. Then it just became a thing. At first I was telling myself I was helping that developer but some of the games I'd watch videos on and go "Why did I buy that?!" It's not that the games wouldn't be bad, just not games that appealed to me.
Also, they're started raising prices and the collector's/limited edtions didn't seem worth what they were charging. I did break myself of the "buy everything every week" and now have some lapses in my collection (mostly the PC releases). The good thing now is they've switched over to the pre-order model so I usually have a little time to decide if I want to pick up what they put out. :P

I guess I can understand where you're coming from seeing as after years in the hobby I ended up collecting comicbooks haphazardly, just getting whatever book piqued my interest based on the cover alone, which led me to a path of obsessing with cover variants. Ironically, look at where that industry is right now...
LRG's initial approach was certainly well-intended—which we all know is the road to hell—but what they've become I honestly cannot support. Much to my chagrin, however, I'm immediately eating those words in a soup given I caved in and pre-ordered Scott Pilgrim; I was internally battling myself, dithering on whether getting it or not right until the very last minute...literally. In the end I just said "fuck it" out loud and placed the order. Indecision is a decision, as they say, and I was willing to live with it, but I really wanted that game.
Anyway, getting back on track, you can always sell whatever games you no longer want; there's still plenty of people interested in LRG releases, so I'd take advantage of that before the allure fades away.

I have parted with a couple of LRG games. I traded them to a friend who runs a flea market booth so I was able to get roughly what I paid for them.
Just a quick diverge about comics, in the last year I finally managed to break myself of only getting floppies. Cover prices are too high, chasing variants and dealing with speculators/scalpers have turned me off. Most series are written with trades in mind anymore so major events and what not I just wait out. It's not always the case but some trades have the variant cover art as a bonus plus I much prefer reading the whole thing from one book instead of a bunch of single issues. Took me long enough to jump on the trade train. :P I still buy some floppies though, I'll never stop getting single issues of Action or Detective Comics. For Action, I have somewhere in the 400's all the way up to just past 1000. ;)
Back to LRG...I just had a bunch of stuff show up from them. I did splurge on a few of the CE versions for Samurai Shodown and the Neo Geo ports they put in Shock Boxes. In regards to Scott Pilgrim, the version with the stage looked neat but I went regular on that. I did buy it on PS4 and Switch though. :P
Quite probably on par with those who bought an Ouya.
I forgot that I bought an Ouya. That's up there.
I bought one of these on clearance at Target. At the time it was still alive and Razer hadn't bought them out yet. I remember initially setting it up and then forgetting about it. Then Razer bought them and scuttled the thing. I haven't really looked into it but I heard they were somewhat "hackable" in that you could side load stuff onto them even though the platform is defunct? I have this "arcade stand" in the room that was an old Games for Windows kiosk that GameStop had in stores years ago that I've been looking to restore and slap some kind of Retro Pi device in or what not and thought maybe the Ouya could be used for that.

Thinking back to all the games released by LRG that I’ve bought…
• Bastion – Fantastic experience
• Broken Age – Not that great, decent beginning, but really falls apart at the end
• Cosmic Star Heroine – Pretty good experience, really fun gameplay, great music, great visuals, but a story that felt rushed
• Grandia HD collection – Haven’t played yet
• Return of the Obra Dinn – Great puzzle game. Haven’t played that much of it though
• Last Blade 2 – Really don’t like this game. I don’t like 2D fighters in general though, so it might just be me
• Momodora: Reverie Under the Moonlight - Decent experience, not that deep, and pretty short. Just okay.
• Salt and Sanctuary – Really great game. Not my favorite visually, but everything else was really excellent
• Shantae – Haven’t played yet
• Shantae and the Seven Sirens – My second favorite Shantae game
• Shantae Risky’s Revenge – Neat game, but not amazing. Prefer the later Shantae games a little more
• Spelunky – Amazing game. One of my favorites of all time.
• Ys Origin – Great game, just can’t stand the tiny HUD
So after giving it more thought, I really only regret purchasing are Last Blade 2 and Broken Age. Then again, I’ve really only been buying the big hitters from LRG, and haven’t really gone out on a limb with some of their more obscure releases.

Just a quick diverge about comics, in the last year I finally managed to break myself of only getting floppies. Cover prices are too high, chasing variants and dealing with speculators/scalpers have turned me off. Most series are written with trades in mind anymore so major events and what not I just wait out. Yeah, trades are 100% better than singles, that I think many would agree could very well be a fact, especially if, as you said, all you care for is the story and you'd rather read the whole thing in one sitting. I used to get them fairly often, too, but I got over them after a while and just decided to go digital. Granted, I admit that I yarr-har-fiddle-dee-dee whatever I read, but the gist is I fully agree with you.
As for the OUYA, you should definitely hack it, that's what it's basically good for, anyway.

Besides my Ouya , I'd say off the top of my head ,I regret buying LAND OF THE DEAD: ROAD TO FIDDLER"S GREEN for the OG Xbox very much . It was so glitchy , I remember every so often the screen would just go green and pink and you'd have to shut it off . It was unplayable .
Honorable mention - My Gemini Alien Infection OG Xbox controller . Very lumpy feel , sticks are hyper sensitive while buttons are unresponsive . A cool looking cheaply made uncomfortable controller .

Pre-order comics. No need to fight scalpers or speculators and you get 15% off cover when pre-ordering.
I don't like waiting and getting the story spoiled. And trades don't go up in value. I have funded many a game or new comic with old issues that raise in value. So I'm still all about the floppies. Not opposed to a trade if it's a lot cheaper for something I don't have, though.

Pre-order comics...ya mean like maintain a pull at my LCS. Done and done. Mine gives me 20% off cover but they are still susceptible to shipments getting damaged and lost as well as under ordering. Most recently got screwed on an issue of Catwoman where a new character debuted. LCS either goofed my pull or didn't order enough and within days that particular issue shot up to $20 with scalpers. Now I've got this hole in the collection that I wonder will ever get filled because I'm NOT trying to pay over cover for that book.
Funding isn't an issue and I never did try to buy comics for the potential value. As for trades not going up in value...that is patently false. There are PLENTY of trades right now I want that are commanding up to triple digits between Amazon, eBay and various online book shops. However if you can find me good condition trades of the Marvel Amalgam Age of Comics for $15-20 each, do let me know. ;)

Probably would have to go with Super Pinball for the SNES. I was expecting it to be even a tad more exciting and I felt I ended playing something that was pretty meh. It was that game that made me want to checkout gameplay footage on YT or anywhere else I can find out more.
