Title: TMNT: Shredder's Revenge and Cowabunga Collection
Post by: Cartagia on April 22, 2022, 05:01:39 pm
Figured I'd make a catch-all thread for this since it seems a bunch of us are excited for it, but we're discussing it like 5 different places.

Newest news:

A Collector's Edition of Cowabunga Collection is now up for pre-order and it will include:

• Physical copy of the game with original box design by Kevin Eastman
• Cloth poster featuring Kevin Eastman’s adaptation of TMNT: Turtles in Time (16” by 24”)
• Multi-layer acrylic diorama of Leonardo, Donatello, Raphael and Michelangelo (4.5” by 5”)
• Enamel pin set of five classic designs – The Technodrome, Turtle Blimp, Party Wagon, Shredder and Krang
• Set of 12 translucent comic style character trading cards based on TMNT: Tournament Fighters with rarely seen appearances from Wingnut, Armaggon, Chrome Dome, War, Aska, Karai and more (3” by 5”)
• Full color artbook with 180 pages featuring a chapter dedicated to each of the 13 games in the compilation (5.5” by 8”)

For Shredder's Revenge

The original voice cast for the turtles will be returning to voice the game.

And release date of... SUMMER

I'm definitely hyped for both games! Both are also Day 1 buys for me.

Crazy that there still isn't a release date for Shredder's Revenge, but Summer is narrowing it down at least lol

I'm buying both, but man... that Cowabunga Collector's Edition looks fantastic. I just can't justify $150 for it as I'm planning to buy the game on both Switch and PS5. I'd love it, but $150 is too steep... especially as I just had to replace my TV and the car needs a ton of work done. *sigh.... adulting sucks.

Purchase plan:
Cowabunga Collection (PS5)
Cowabunga Collection (Switch)
Shredder's Revenge (PS5)

Assuming that Shredder's Revenge is $40, that's $120 for three purchases. After taxes, that's still cheaper than the CE of the Cowabunga collection. Hmm... maybe if I only buy Cowabunga collection on PS5... then I could convince myself?  :-\

See... now I'm questioning everything.  :o

The collector's edition looks rather nice, but there's no soundtrack included, and it goes for $150. Thanks, but no thanks. For comparison, the Resident Evil 2 Collector's Edition cost $200 and included a 12" statue with minimal fluff. I don't think a poster, diorama, artbook, some pins and tradings cards should amount to $150, and quite frankly think they missed the perfect opportunity of including quite possibly one of the best aspects of the TMNT games: their music. And mind you, I'm not saying they had to include an expensive item, and I understand given the type of release a book showcasing the history of the games was a must, but it needed something else with a bit more weight than a diorama, some enamel pins and trading cards as incentives, especially for those like me that are fans of the series, but could care less about collector's editions. Just my spare change.

Anyway...

A legit soundtrack would be phenomenal. Definitely agree that it's a missed opportunity.

The collector's edition is so over-priced for sure.  I'd consider it a pricey buy even if it was a 100 bucks for what it offers, especially for a 40 dollar game.

Yeah, I've talked myself out of it. Not getting the Limited Edition. The items included are great for a huge fan like myself, but not $150 worth of great. As mentioned earlier... it does lack some key items such as a legitimate soundtrack be it CD or download. I have the soundtracks downloaded already, but was hoping for a legitimate one. The behind the scenes book is probably the only other thing I would really have enjoyed. Eh... I also really like Eastman's version of the cover as well. The rest is just filler that would sit in the box or on a shelf barely looked at.

Collector's Editions anymore are just cash grabs. I guess they've always been but they've gotten increasingly more pricey for less. The last collector's edition I bought was Uncharted 4's Libertalia CE at launch. It was $120 and came with a large statue of Drake, small art book and a few other things. It was worth the cost for fans. The next I had considered was RE2 Remake's CE. I think it was a ridiculous $200+ for essentially the same stuff that Uncharted 4's came with.

I'm not saying that the TMNT CE needs figures... I have the incredible 1990 movie NECA figures... but something more could have been added... or the price far less. I would happily have bought the limited edition if it was $80 instead.

Then I'm going to say it: Personally, for $150, I would've expected some type of deal with NECA to include a figure, an actual limited one unique to this release that I'm sure would've been the deciding factor for many when mulling whether getting the CE or not. But then again, it's Konami and we've learned not to expect much from them over the years. Other than that, I'm sticking to my guns reiterating this needed a soundtrack—physical copy, not a download; I can rip the music myself from the games, and have done it before. As much as the book is covering the history of the games, so would the soundtrack covering over 330+ minutes of shell-shocking audio, which translates to around five CDs. If the CE had included the soundtrack—by that I mean lossless audio and not a transcode—coupled with the contents currently advertised, then I would've happily forked over $100.

In all honesty, given this is a compilation-type game, I wasn't expecting it to get a limited-type release, so the fact that it's going to is incredible. But they're obviously crazy if they genuinely believe their idea of a "limited edition" is a box filled with cheap items thinking they're worth the $150 price tag.

Regarding the Uncharted 4 vs. Resident Evil 2 collector's editions, I think inflation, greed included, were possibly the culprit, but the crux of the matter is that their contents were, and still are well worth more than what the Cowabunga Collection CE is offering; and in the case of the two aforementioned collector's sets, the quality of the statues is actually good. So, even if we were to use inflation as an excuse for this collector's edition, what they're asking is still too much for what they're offering.

That said, this collector's set truly exemplifies the usual believe that these type of releases are just cheap, lazy cash grabs, which is honestly why I've never really cared for them, albeit I reckon there are exceptions to that rule. My advise would be to just give it a few months after release and maybe you'll be able to get this one off eBay for a cheaper price, possibly even find someone selling the book.

I agree 1000% regarding the soundtracks.
Not kidding, the first TMNT arcade game has one of my absolute favorite soundtracks ever. When I played it I would clear the screen of enemies and just listen for a bit, especially the kick-ass Technodrome level.
SNES TMNT IV’s soundtrack is iconic. Even Fall of the Foot Clan on GB had great music (by the legendary Michiru Yamane, too). Definitely a missed opportunity. These soundtracks deserve to be heard.

Any link to Amazon getting it as well? I'm only finding the Limited Run notification. Which... great. I'm glad I'll have a physical option. I guess this would also confirm that PS5 isn't getting a version of it either which I guess we don't really have to worry about graphics comparisons on this one so.... lol

Yeah, I have it pre-ordered for Xbox. No real release date on it, though, just an end-of-year placeholder:

Here's all the versions for Shredder's Revenge.  The Radical Edition is fun, but not 200 dollars of fun, especially for a 35 dollar game.  I'll probably grab the classic edition for the VHS styled packaging, though I wish it was designed like an actual VHS box, because it comes out the side, not the bottom, unless that's just to show the VHS part and it does work like a normal VHS box.   I'm assuming the release date will be announced tomorrow at Summer Games Fest.

I have an e-mail out to LRG asking if they're planning to ship when the digital version releases or if it will be the usual 3-6 month delay. If it's the 3-6 month delay, I'll order only the PS4 version from them and get the switch version digitally. If they ship the same day, I'll buy both from them. In today's day and age with mass shipping and distribution problems, I have no faith that they'll be able to hit a deadline months down the way.

My plan is to play with the PC Game Pass, save a bunch of money, and then just order the physical version for Switch, so it doesn't really matter how long it takes to ship.  Double dipping without the full costs involved.

For those wondering, there's no way that LRG will be shipping Shredder's Revenge next week. They have it on the site now showing that preorders will close on July 24th. That's 5 weeks after the release of the digital version and that's just to stop taking preorders.

I expect that the physical PS4 copy I ordered won't arrive until probably September at the earliest. Maybe even just before Christmas. I'll be buying the digital Switch version next week for the family.

It should also be noted that the LRG standard edition is available at most of the major retailers for pre-order, which is not usually the case for LRG.  If it comes to a retailer it is usually after the pre-orders have gone out and the game has been "released," and sometimes with a different cover.

For those interested, the standard Japanese version includes a soundtrack CD, acrylic stand, and standard game packaged in a collector's box for $35.99 USD. On the other hand, the standard game alone sold through Limited Run is $34.99 USD. With that said, the Japanese version isn't reported to include a reversible cover, sticker set, or pizza coupon, but it's possible that some of those items may also be included. And to note, the Japanese version does support English language.

The Japanese version is expected to ship by August 25. Limited Run's products are reported to begin shipping in late-July to early-August (take that information as you will), so the difference in reported shipping times don't vary by much.

Finally got some play time in over the last day or so with the kids. We got Casey Jones unlocked. I definitely enjoyed it. I really liked that the dev seemed to be fans of the original. Lots of characters made it into this that were basically gone from the games that had released before.

As odd as this may sound, this is a GOTY contender for me.

Been enjoying the nostalgia of replaying quite a few of these. So far I've beat the following:
 - TMNT Arcade x2
 - TMNT 2 NES
 - TMNT 3 NES
 - TMNT TF Gen
 - TMNT TF NES
 - Hyperstone Heist Gen
 - Turtles in Time Arcade

Currently playing:
 - TMNT NES (original) - I will say that having that rewind button and a save feature makes the difficulty of this game plummet. It's allowing me to replay the game without the stress of "Get good", but at the same time it's less fulfilling. I plan to replay it a second time and beat it without using rewind or save in the future.

Rewind was the only way I was gonna beat that game lol The game cleaning up the sprite flicker and slowdown helps, but that game is a frustrating mess of just the worst hitboxes and incredibly poorly designed encounters.  I got nostalgia for it, but it's a rough time for sure and it was neat to finally be able to beat it the first time.

I already posted in the challenge thread about what I've beaten, but I've mostly just played what are gonna be the "worst" games of the collection, like TMNT NES, Tournament Fighters NES, and TMNT 1 and 2 on the Gameboy.  None that are particularly good, but I wanted to get to them first before I dove more into the Turtle in Time and Hyperstone Heist stuff.  I did dabble in TMNT: The Arcade Game for NES, it's kinda rough, and TMNT 3 for Game Boy is neat, very Castlevania in its exploration, though it is suprisingly difficult I'm finding as some of the combat encounters can be abit rough.  While still not up to the real good games, I am enjoying myself with this nice TMNT resurgence with the collection and Shredder's Revenge.

Oh man. No kidding. I was playing one of the later levels getting to the Turtle Blimp where there's spikes. I inched up too it to get a jump right and took damage well before touching the spikes.  ::)  I don't know how 11-12 year old me did it.

So far I've played

TMNT Arcade
Hyperstone Heist
Turtles in Time SNES

OG Arcade and Hyperstone Heist are incredibly clunky compared to the SNES Turtles in Time which is pretty easily the best of the classic beat 'em ups.

It's what makes the underwater seaweed section such a nightmare.  I also don't know how people were supposed to beat the Technodrome, because I would keep getting hit by stuff that I wasn't sure how I hit or what was hitting me, it was so miserable lol

I beat the game yesterday and holy crap... that gauntlet in the Technodrome at the end just before Shredder was ridiculous. Even with rewind and all four turtles with near full health... I found the only way I could get through it was with Don constantly hitting down and inching forward so the jetpack foot would come forward and then back away off the screen disappearing. So many enemies. It was nuts.

I found the only way I could get through it was with Don constantly hitting down and inching forward so the jetpack foot would come forward and then back away off the screen disappearing. So many enemies. It was nuts.

The secret is to load up turtles with scrolls. Then you're overpowered for the later areas.

I just finished the first two Game Boy games last night. More fun than I was giving them credit for before playing.

That leaves the third GB game and the Tournament Fighters games. I never got very good at the fighting games. Any tips on how to best earn the trophies? What difficulty do they have to be at? I beat the Genesis game on normal and it didn't count. Go figure.

I managed to get the platinum trophy for Cowabunga Collection. I left the SNES Turtles in Time for last.

I haven't been playing stuff at all so I had problems playing Turtles.

But, last Sunday I wanted the platinum trophy and just went in a 2 hours marathon for getting everything, it's a pretty easy platinum for the most part but, it's fun.

Shreddere's Revenge is releasing in a couple weeks physically on November 2nd, so that's when I'll do another playthrough of the game and probably try to do a 100% go at it.

Happy to say I just got my shipment notification from LRG for Shredder's Revenge that my game is scheduled to ship. They've supplied a tracking number so I expect it to go out before the end of the week.

Keep an eye on your e-mails guys.

DLC for Shredder's Revenge announced!  Dimension Shellshock.  New levels, enemies, character colors and new playable characters, with Usagi Yojimbo the one they've announced.

I'm really excited about the DLC announcement. Usagi is a favorite. This will be Day 1 for me. The art is still stellar.

DLC confirmed to release on August 31st. A little more than a week away. It also includes Karai. So two new characters, new modes and the free color pallet changes. The DLC will be $8. That's a pretty fair asking price. Day one for me.

I picked up the Shredder's Revenge DLC yesterday. It's currently on sale for about $0.80 cents off -- $7.20 or so.

I only played a little as I'm in the midst of my work week, but the survival mode is pretty fun. You beat up a few bad guys and then select from two portals how you want to advance. It can either be a slight increase in difficulty or it can be somehting like added power ups such as pizza or even mutating into one of the bosses -- I got to play as Rocksteady. I also saw new enemies like Toka.

Fun stuff. Recommended.
