I usually have a tough time with this question ... some games pop in and out of my favorites ... some will never leave. Here are a few of the permanent fixtures.

Super Metroid : The best Metroid game ever made. It fixed all the issues that was wrong with the original Metroid, added some new stuff, and didnt skip a beat.

Zelda: A Link to the Past : Again, same as above. The best Zelda game ever. Damn near the best game ever. One of the only games that gets a lot of playthroughs for me over the years.

Final Fantasy VII : At a time where games still had issues drawing you in for a while, this game came along and made you want to finish the story. Some of the most memorable characters in my life. My daughter is named after this game ... my first tattoo is from this game. That shows how much this game means to me.

Dragon Warrior : While some of the other DW/DQ games out there are probably more fun and more exciting, this is what started it all. A simple character kicking slime ass eventually saves the princess and defeats the Dragonlord. Countless other games have followed this premise. A classic among classics.

Super Mario Bros 3 : This game revolutionized the NES and games to follow. It changed the way people played games. Everything about it is simply flawless. From the Raccoon tail to the 1 up cards at the end of the level, nothing was missed.

Mortal Kombat : When fighting games were all the hype, all the sudden this game comes along and drop kicks the competition. Fatalities, special moves, different stages, etc. It also brought an aspect to fighting games that all others were missing and desperately needed = A block button.

God of War : Carnage ... simply carnage. The "hero" of most games are normally considered to be some princess saving goody goody. Not Kratos. The man simply kicks ass and destroys everyone and everything in his path. Unleashing combo after combo on multitudes of monsters earning those red orbs is just hours of excitement that is unobtainable in any other fashion.

Ys Books 1&2 : Gorgeous. Awesome to play. The best music ever. I actually spent my entire highschool years listening to the music from Ys on cassette tape. This game alone was the main reason I got VC on my Wii was to relive the many hours I spent playing this game on different consoles. It was some of the best spent $8 of my life. All the memories came rushing back to me the moment the intro music started and I couldnt stop playing for hours.

F-Zero: Maximum Velocity I've had a copy since maybe 2004 or 2005. It can be a crazy hard game but it was so much fun, until the internal battery died.
Commander Keen 4: Secret of the Oracle My friend first showed this DOS game to me probably about the same time he showed me F-zero. Easily completed it 50+ times.
Kirby Air Ride My neighbor had this and we played it like every day for a whole summer.
Putt-Putt Saves the Zoo Pretty much my childhood.
Super Smash Bros. Melee Another neighbor had this and we played for more than a whole summer but basically every weekend.
Pokemon Soulsilver Still play it today and just reached 400 hours
Pokemon Ruby First pokemon game. Got it when it came out.
Rock Band Pretty much created my iTunes library. Still have the stock drumset in my room.
Mario Kart DS Holy crap. My friends and I still play this game like once a week. It's so fun.
Tetris so many hours wasted.

The 1st game that *always* comes to my mind when I need to 'pick a favorite' is (and has been for years) Shadow Hearts: Covenant (PS2 RPG).

Closely followed by Disgaea(s) and pretty much any/everything:

A).  SRPG,
B).  NISA, and (for even *extra* points),
C).  Anything that's both NISA & SRPG!!!

I made a list of my 100 favorite games of all time about 5 years ago. I wonder if I can find it to see if it differs. I remember KotOR was number 3 before Fallout 3 came out. Except for Dragon Quest 5, I've put hundreds of hours into each of these games. Easily thousands when it comes to Civilization.

Tied for first place:
Secret of Mana (SNES) - For many years, this was my absolute favorite game of all time. I remember my brother's friend brought it over when it was just released and I fell in love. So much so, that I hid it so the guy couldn't take it home. He was one of those rich kids that never noticed he didn't have it for a week. Come on, it's a three player RPG with vibrant graphics and a cliche driven story. What isn't there to love?
Suikoden 2 (PSX) - Then Suikoden 2 was released... I loved the first one, still do, but Suikoden 2 was a game that I played through seven times in a row. I picked it up when you could still get it new in stores, I believe it was $25. Captain Hindsight says I should have picked up all eight copies that day... Seriously, a direct sequel to an amazing RPG, 108 characters and a majority of them are actually worthwhile, a truly evil villain (to begin with), and plenty of replay value. As close to perfection as you can get.
Fallout 3 (360) - I remember the feeling I got when I first left Vault 101. The sense of awe, wonder, and excitement I felt is something I doubt any other game will ever give me. The Fallout universe is probably the best fleshed out universe that has connecting stories (neck and neck with Suikoden). My favorite part is that as a WRPG, I can play the same game over and over so many different ways that I'll never get bored.

4. River City Ransom (NES) - Whenever my brother, or my friend Keegan and I get together, RCR is a likely choice. If we've got a couple of hours to kill, there is no better way to do it than by beating up the Generic Dudes, Squids, or Internationals. I'll play this game any day of the week.
5. Dragon Quest 5 (DS) - While on my quest to complete all the Dragon Quest games, I fell in love with DQ5. The story and the characters sucked me in. The end of Act 2 will forever be engrained in my memory. I'm at the point of starting DQ8 now, but so far 5 is the best.
6. Virtual Pro Wrestling 2 (N64) - Everyone who knows me is aware that besides being an avid gamer, I'm also a professional wrestler. This is the best professional wrestling game ever made. Fire Pro is great, too, but VPW2 is everything I've ever wanted from a wrestling game.
7. Sid Meier's Civilization (SNES) (and Civilization Revolution on both 360 and DS) - As a kid, I remember seeing an ad for Civilization in EGM. I had to have it. When it appeared as a present from my mom, I rejoiced. I spent countless nights playing Civilization and listening to Metallica and Pantera. Great memories. As an aside, I really enjoy Civ Rev. I know a lot of hardcore Civ fans don't care for it, but I think it's fun to be able to go through a game in 3 hours. And when I'm on the go, the DS version is almost as good as the 360 version. Don't hate, play the game.
8. E.V.O. Search for Eden (SNES) - I remember renting E.V.O. for the first time from Panorama Video. I didn't know what I was in for, but Enix had never let me down in the past, so I went for it. Survival of the Fittest is so true. Creating some weird combinations with all the different body parts was great fun. I especially liked finding the special crystal that would morph you into an elephant. I trampled so many bad guys in that form.
9. Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic (XBOX) - KotOR has fallen from grace in my eyes, as I've tried playing it recently and it didn't hold up to the memories I had. It used to be a top 3 game (before Fallout 3), but that was half a decade or more in the past. The story was a fine addition to the Expanded Universe and the characters (HK-47, I'm looking at you) were great (Carth wasn't terrible). However, I must leave the game where it is best revered, in my memories.
10. Harvest Moon 64 (N64) - It was tough to choose which Harvest Moon should go on the list. I remember searching for two years after the release of the SNES version before I found it. I had trouble with the N64 version as well, but one fine day at Software Etc. (Managed by our fearless leader) I happened across this copy. The more I think about it, the more I feel that the N64 version is the ultimate Harvest Moon game. Magical Melody and Tree of Tranquility are great in their own ways, as are the GBA games, but I liked the N64 the best.

There are my top ten. Some games that are on the fringe are Pokemon (I got Blue at release), Final Fantasy 3/6 (Best Final Fantasy), Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, Monster Rancher 2, Dead Rising, Earthbound and Sim City.

Glad to see someone agrees with me. I wanted to add enough games to make a top 10. Im sure if I thought about for a little while I could come up with a few more.

Fallout 3 (PS3) is my absolute favorite of all time. So much so that I got te Brotherhod of Steel symbol tatooed on my leg. Just had never found a game that drew me in so well. The soundtrack was amazing, the entire Capital Wasteland looked amazing, the characters were lovable, hateable, and oh so beautifully killable. I'm only missing one trophy for it, in the Mothership Zeta DLC to collect all the Alien Captive Logs.
Final Fantasy 3 / 6 (SNES). Greatest RPG ever made. Ultimate team is Sabin, Shadow, Terra, and Celes.
Mega Man 2 (NES) was the best of the NES series in my opinion. I rented it alot from 2 different stores growing up before I actually found a second hand copy to buy. Mega Man 3 is pretty close in tere too.
Borderlands (PS3) is one of my favorite FPS/RPG combos. Whereas I loved Fallout for the amazing storyline and realisic outlook of the future post-apocalypse, I love Borderlands because it is really actionpacked and fastpaced.
Final Fantasy (NES) is that game that got me into RPGs in general. My parents bought it for me as my first game I ever personally owned.
Double Dragon II The Revenge (NES) is the game that came with our NES when I was kid. I can remember spending so many hours playing t wth my neighbour until eventually destroying it. I think it might be the only classic DD game that physically possible to beat by your average gamer hahaha.
Gauntlet Legends (Stand-Up in arcade) I used to pump so many quarters into that game at Crystal alace in New Brunswick! I remember going there one day and I literally stood there the entire time playing it with some other dude tht was already there and didnt even go on a single ride.
Ratchet & Clank: Up Your Arsenal (PS2) was just an awesome take on action RPG. It got me hooked onto the entire series.
Kingdom Hearts (PS2). I utterly destroyed that game. I unlocked everything as far as I know of and was able to beat Sephiroth on the 2nd playthrough without taking hardly any damage. I was somewhat dissapointed with the 2nd game.
Absolutely any Super Mario Bros. in the series. Need I say more? They're only the most classic platformers ever made. Obey the Mustache Ride! Hahahaha
Castlevania: Symphony of the Night. Back during my Ecstacy days I used to play that game all day long. I got my castle to 198.5% beaten.
 ;D

I like to switch up my fourth character every run through. The only characters I dont like in the game are Strago and Umaro.

The ole Top 10 list.
I think mine changes everyday.  So I'll give today's a shot.

10) NBA Jam (any of the countless iterations of NBA Arcade games made buy Midway) I spent loads of time with this as a teenager.  Last year they came out with one for XBLA.  I played the heck out of it.  It's still awesome.

9) Borderlands - This may just be because I'm waiting on my copy of Borderlands 2 to get here.  My preorder was lost in the mail.

8 ) Mega Man 2 or 3 (I can't decide) - Do I need to explain?  It's Mega Man.

7) Donkey Kong Country - I can come back and play this one over and over.  For me, it's mindless fun.  Move left to right and jump on everyone's head.  The insane amount of secrets adds a ton of replayability. (Is "replayability" a word?)

6) Mario Kart Series (Damn it. They're all good!) - The first one didn't age well, but the rest are a blast.  This is a big reason I want a 3DS

5) The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past - This is one of the best games ever.  It's fun, engaging, and well paced.  I love it.

4) Conker's Bad Fur Day - Toilet Humor? Check.  Movie Parodies? Check.  Awesome Platforming? Check.  Shit Monster? Check.

3) Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!! - Mario's the ref.  Soda Popinski's a dick.  Mike Tyson's impossible for me to beat.  I love this game.

2) Contra - I defy you to find a better Co-op game.  See, you just tried and couldn't.  I'm sure you'll come up with something, but you'll be wrong

1) Super Mario Bros. 3 - There was a close run between this Super Mario World.  These two games are the apex of platforming.  Big fan of those Mario games

So there it is.  My Top 10 favorite games at 1:30 P.M. on September 25th 2012.  It'll change by the time I hit post.

Cyan is actually the worst character in the game. His Sword Techniques are weak compared to every other special move. His magic is the lowest of the characters that can use it, so he's weaksauce there too. Bummed me out when I found that out, because I actually liked Cyan as a kid, but the true ultimate team is...........

Gau, Sabin, Edgar, and Shadow.

So, I feel like I'm going to be burned for this, but I really didn't LOVE fallout 3.  I never really felt any kind of connection to anyone in the game, even my character.  The story arc didn't seem well paced to me, and without giving any spoilers, the end of the game totally snuck up on me.  I guess it is because I didn't do enough of the side missions and whatnot, but I had only explored a tiny part of the map, and all of a sudden I was in the last mission of the game.

Throughout the game, I was annoyed by ALWAYS being hurt or encumbered or both, and although I know why they did that, and what it was trying to achieve, I found it more irritating than creating a mood of survival or whatever.

Did I miss something?

10: anything Lego! lego island, the lego mmo that is now defunct, Lego saga games i love em all!
9: NES play action football: one of the few sports games i thoroughly enjoy!
8: Super mario RPG Legend of seven stars SNES: honestly, one of the best RPG's i have ever played, simple, fun, funny, childish, but still challenging enough...
7: Age of Empires: sentemental placement :) we broke the protection on our schools computers in 1998 and installed this game... :) played a lan network game with players at random locations across the school. :)
6: Lemmings: wow... this game is fun. if never played, go play it! save them or kill them, up to you!
5: Civilization 2 PC: almost caused me to get kicked out of university.... :)
4: StarCraft PC: SC2 sucks in my opinion.... Starcraft 1, thats another story. i currently own 12 copies of the game, i have 21 codes to access B.net with, because i physically wore out 7 disks by playing the game too much. i built 7 extra computers to build a lan in my house so i could play with my friends.... i still can wipe the floor with them in this game. 7 vs 1 :)
3: Sim City 4 PC: mmmmmm build a city... :)
2: Crystalis - NES RPG, the first RPG i ever played start to finish. this one has a nice place in my heart... :) i will find myself responding with Crystalis when someone asks me what my favorite game ever is, the only reason it isnt number 1 is cause it isnt my fall back game.
1: Defender of the Crown: a simple game for NES and PC, i own both copies, old and easy, its my go to game when i am bored and start to think "i have nothing to play" something about this game makes me want to play it all the bloody time... and it isnt even that great!

There are so many games I've enjoyed over the years. I think I'll narrow it down to my favorite nostalgia-inducing PC games.

10) Barbie Magic Hairstyler: This game was awesome--hell, I'd play it now if I still had it. I am a princess always and forever!!!!
9) Tomb Raider: I never knew the meaning of adventure until I met Lara Croft.
8 ) The Sims: You either loved this game or hated it. I spent hours upon hours deciding what color carpet to put in the living room and how to rise through the ranks as a budding cat burglar. I also liked to take the ladder off the pool to see how long my Sims could tread water before they succumbed to exhaustion. *evil laughter*
7) Alien Carnage/Halloween Harry: Side-scrolling adventure where you kill zombie-aliens and rescue the pretty lady.
6) SkyRoads: drive your spaceship down the skyroad but keep clear of its hazards. Also, listen to awesome techno music while you cruise through space.
5) D: It's like Myst if it were a survival horror. A creepy game with weird puzzles.
4) Crime City: Point and click adventure! Help to clear your fathers' name after he's falsely accused of murder.
3) Relentless - Twinsen's Adventure: Have fun escaping from an asylum and go on a quest to defeat a maniacal tyrant controlling your planet while interacting with tons of anthropomorphic animals in a colorful world.
2) Wolfenstein 3D: old school FPS complete with Nazi killing! Need I say more?
1) Myst: I'll never forget falling in love with the mysterious and beautiful island of Myst.

Well, here's my top 10, in no particular order.

10.) Hyperdimension Neptunia mk2 - Alright, this game is sort of a guilty pleasure. I put hundreds of hours into 100%ing this game and I had a blast with the whole thing. On top of that, it cracked me up almost every few minutes.

9.) Nier - Literally one of the most mindfucking games I have ever played. You can spend HOURS learning the background of this game and trying to figure out what the fuck is going on.

8.) Fatal Frame 2 - One of my favorite horror games from one of my favorite horror series of all time. This game nailed nearly every aspect; atmosphere, story, gameplay. It is truly an amazing experience.

7.) Demon's Souls - Honestly, if you don't think this game is great there is something wrong with you. The entire experience of this game is truly amazing. I don't want to spoil anything, but holy SHIT Maden Astraea and Storm King are fun.

6.) Dark Souls - The only reason I put this above Demon's Souls is because of the time I've poured into it. I've poured at least 1000 hours into Dark Souls and I haven't gotten tired of it. The PVP system is unique and the game does a truly amazing job of blending both single player and multiplayer.

5.) Monster Hunter Portable 3rd - Alright, this one is pretty easy to understand. The game is so damn fun to play, especially with friends or online in general. It looks AMAZING for a PSP game, and most of all killing any monster feels rewarding.

4.) Metal Gear Solid 3 - Alright, here we have it. Metal Gear Solid 3, one of the greatest games I have ever played. The story is amazing, the characters are amazing, the voice acting is good, hell, the entire experience is truly amazing. The gameplay is really engaging. There isn't much else to say, other than this game is nearly perfect.

3.) Persona 3: FES - I played this game when I was in early high school and I don't think I've ever felt so immersed in a game. You can truly see yourself as the main character and it almost feels like you are IN the game. The characters are all believable and the Persona system is fun as hell.

2.) Zone of the Enders: The 2nd Runner - This game is quite literally one of the funnest games I've played in my life. It has an excellent story, fast paced combat, amazing art style, the only downside is that it has mediocre voice acting.

1.) Fatal Frame 4 - Here we have it. My favorite game of all time. This game truly seemed to NAIL survival horror. This game has a lot of subtle things that spook you that you may or may not notice, and it also has the complementary jump scares. The atmosphere is AMAZING and you will always feel on edge when playing this game. Really, there isn't much I can say other than you NEED to play this.

@htimreimer I haven't played the pc version yet. I have played the mobile and Sega cd version. If the mobile version had a genesis controller then I would prefer it because the Sega cd version is glitchy, but I have to go with the Sega cd version just because of the controller.

I have a lot of favorite games... For me, a great game is anything that isn't afraid to try something new, it dosen't matter if they succeed or if they fail. Some of them are:

-Shodow Of The Colossus/Silent Hill 2/Persona 4: for their extensive worlds and their amazing aesthetics
-Final Fantasy 6/Chrono Trigger/Mass Effect: for their genius storytelling
-Super Mario RPG/Paper Mario/Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga: For their innovative battle systems

But my favorite game of all time has to be Rogue Galaxy! This game may not be the best game ever, but when I first played it, it hit all of the things I wanted out of a game: Expansive Worlds, Compelling Characters, Innovative Battle System and Imaginative, but Coherent Story!

Chrono Trigger

Funny you should mention CT, Darko :)

I've hit TWO (and have over-come ONE) "frustration"/"sticking"-points in the game, thus far.

To be fair, though, it's not the game's fault that it's harder for me to do things having only the 1 hand to work with...

At any rate, the 1st one was Death's Peak.

- What with all of the ice/slipping & sliding while trying to hide from the wind behind trees...after several, consecutive failed attempts...I was pissed enough to leave the game alone for a day or 2 before trying it again.  Luckily (and very pleasantly surprising:) - I nailed it on my 1st attempt coming back to it  ;D

It's now been another 2 or 3 days since I've played it...

...this time, I stopped playing after several annoyingly frustrating hours of running around the "GenoDome" (at least, I'm pretty sure that's the right name) ===> (it's the place for Robo's side-quest/best weapon).

I've been going at it w/o a guide...and I found (and deposited) one little 'doll' thing somewhere -and- it looks like I need to get another one...but...there's a robot that *blocks* me every time I go anywhere near the damned thing...Argh!!!

I'm thinking about giving it another try later today...I'll get there, eventually!

I can do one definite one - NiGHTS into Dreams (Sat/PS2/XBLA... the ports are good enough that it doesn't really matter which version) - but after that I could list a hundred games and still wouldn't be sure I've covered everything I love :)

YES! When I repurchased my Saturn, that was one of the 1st games I hunted down. I've not played it on XBLA though, is it a lot better looking?

It's based on the PS2 version, so it does look a lot better than the original. If you find yourself not liking the new style though there is an option to change the graphics back to the old Saturn look.

1: Zelda Ocarina of Time. (N64) : Played it as a kid and was just lost in its story and the land of hyrule. (Big zelda nerd >_>)
2: Super Mario World. (SNES) : Awesome graphical upgrade and smooth controls.
3: Zelda Link to the Past. (SNES) : Great story and game play which added a lot to the series.
4: Pokemon Y/B/R. : (GB) : Anyone around my age played the hell out of these games and I still go back to them today.
5: Star Fox 64. (N64) : Just love the visuals and how well the game is put together along with it being one of my first rumble pak games. (for people who games before built in rumble :P)
6: Road Rash. (3DO) I just loved the violance as a kid and how it had real music, now I just love the violance.
7: Banjo Kazooie. (N64) Just an all together great game and Rare knocked it out of the park with every detail.
8: Metal Gear: (PS1) it's Metal Gear what more can I say
9: Metal Slug: (Neo Geo) I love the violance thats behind the 16 bit lens and man does it get hard.
10: Pitfall (Atari 2600) : Playing it for the first time is what began my obsession with collecting.

Its true I waited to get a 3DO until I started to run out of common systems to get and it took me 3 tries to get a working one >_> but when you do its worth it for some games others not so much. But they do jump up in price so you just have to keep your eye out for a good deal :P

My Top 20 Games:

1. The Elder Scrolls Games - Particularly Morrowind, Oblivion, and Skyrim. I haven't ever played Daggerfall or Arena. Those games just give you so much freedom and exploration, and a massive yet detailed world to do it all in. And the character options are endless as well. A masterpiece of gaming with each iteration.

2. Metroid Franchise - The first one was just alright for me. The lack of an in-game map and the constant grind for health (plus only starting with only 30 health regardless of how many health tanks you have) kept it from being a masterpiece, IMO. But when Super Metroid came out, it blew me away and remains one of the greatest gaming experiences I've ever had to this day. And every Metroid game after it has been fantastic, as well.

3. The Legend of Zelda Franchise (2D Games) - I LOVE The Legend of Zelda series. The first game on NES is one of my first personally owned games as a little kid. I know every nook and cranny of that game by heart. The different, yet still good Zelda II on NES is another favorite of mine (but so hard at the end), and A Link to the Past was a complete masterpiece. The handheld Zelda games are on par with those console counterparts as well. But for some reason, I just can't get into the 3D Zelda games as much.

4. The Super Mario Bros. Series - Mario is a gaming icon, and as cliché as it may be, he's a gaming hero for me. Super Mario Bros. is the reason I wanted an NES so badly as a kid. And Super Mario Bros. 3 improved on perfection. Super Mario World was stunning, and even Super Mario Sunshine on Gamecube is a blast to play. The core Mario series never disappoints with it's crisp controls and perfect platforming.

5. The King's Field Series - I just love this series, and I have to be it's biggest fan out there. I've played all 3 U.S. entries so many times, that I could verbally walk you through each game. It's a 3D action-RPG played from the first-person perspective with a very heavy emphasis on exploration, a steep learning-curve, and a bit of a challenge.

6. The Resident Evil Series - I've always loved horror movies, especially zombie flicks (Dawn of the Dead and Day of the Dead by George Romero are MUST-SEE MOVIES for any horror-fans). And I've always been a big fan of Capcom. So it's only natural that I'd love this survival-horror series. The settings, music, sound-effects, and storyline just come together beautifully for most games in the series.

7. The Halo Series - Yeah, another cliché title in my list...sue me. I love sci-fi, and I love a well-polished game. And Halo is both. The biggest draw for me is the sci-fi universe, story, and setting. I love the epic scope of it all. And the graphics are beautiful to behold on both Xbox and Xbox 360. Plus the music is some of the best in the entire gaming world. And the great multiplayer sure doesn't hurt.

8. Castlevania Series - If I love the Metroid Series, then I have to love the Castlevania Series. From Sympony of the Night on PS1 and beyond (and on Castlevania II: Simon's Quest for NES), the series has embraced the Metroidvania style of gameplay, and executed it perfectly, which I'm a huge fan of. The music is always amazing. Plus the added RPG-elements really fleshes out the gameplay. And the platforming is spot-on (and was even before Symphony of the Night). Plus the gothic settings and cool looking creatures helps, too.

9. Neverwinter Nights (PC) - The best "Diablo-style" action-RPG ever made, as far as I'm concerned. The attention to detail is just astounding in gameplay, in stats & abilities, in character choices, in the amount of gear/spells available, and in the size of the world you're playing in. And then the sheer amount of expansions and modules available for the game just make it an amazing deal.

10. Crystalis (NES) - An 8-bit masterpiece. Easily one of the best games on the NES, and a crowning jewel in SNK's library of games. It's a damn shame that this game never received a sequel. It plays a lot like the original Legend of Zelda, but does nearly everything better than Legend of Zelda: Better graphics, better music & sound effects, bigger world to explore, more RPG-elements, and more towns and NPCs to interact with. I recommend this HIGHLY to fans of the 8-bit era, or of The Legend of Zelda.

11. Bionic Commando (NES) - Who would have thought that the addition of a bionic-arm would switch up 2D platforming so much and make a game so much fun? But it did! A must-have for the NES and a rare example of an NES version of a game being better than it's arcade counterpart (Ninja Gaiden also immediately comes to mind). Capcom really outdid themselves with this one.

12. Contra (NES) - Another rare example of an NES version of a game being better than it's arcade counterpart with added levels and even better control. The run-n-gun action is so good in this one, that it's still a blast to play to this day, and even more fun with a friend for some co-op action. Up, Up, Down, Down, Left, Right, Left, Right, B, A, B, A, Start. The famous Konami code was the most useful right here on this bad-boy for the coveted 30-lives.

13. Mega Man 2 (NES) - The BEST game in the Mega Man series, bar-none. Great level-design, tight controls and 2D platforming, great boss battles, fantastic 8-bit music, and it's freaking Mega Man! Such an improvement over the original game.

14. Marvel vs. Capcom: Clash of the Super Heroes (Dreamcast) - The best 2D fighting game ever made, as far as I'm concerned. Now I could be biased on this one, because I am a life-long comic book fan. But the gameplay and the amazing 2D graphics and the sheer amount of characters available to choose has to have a little to do with it. And the crisp controls and tight-gameplay that you expect from a Capcom fighter definitely has a little to do with it, as well.

15. Sonic the Hedgehog Series (2D Games) - I love me some 2D Sonic the Hedgehog platforming. The 3D games just aren't the same for me. Sonic the Hedgehog 1-4, Sonic & Knuckles, Sonic: Pocket Adventure, and Sonic Advance are all fan-freaking-tastic platformers that are just plain fun to play. Sonic CD I hear is just as good, but I haven't played much more of it than the first level; which I did enjoy, though.

16. Guitar Hero Series - I'm big into metal and hard-rock. And this game let me live out my inner-fantasy of being a rockstar. Plus there's a lot of great hard-rock stuff on these games. So I'm a sucker for this music-based series.

17. Tony Hawk's Pro Skater Series - Because doing a ton of tricks with crisp controls a great soundtrack is a fantastic way to waste some time.

18. Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection (XBox 360) - I know, many of your are thining "Hey, that's cheating!" But I love classic game compilations. I own a ton of them. You just get so many games for such a cheap price, and I don't have anything against playing older games. Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection is THE BEST classic game compilation I've seen. Just a massive amount of great Sega classics at your fingertips to play on 1 disc.

19. WWE: Smackdown Series - I like professional wrestling. (And yes, I know it's fake.)  I've been a lifelong fan since the days when Hulk Hogan, Macho Man, Ultimate Warrior, and Rowdy Roddy Piper ruled the WWF. The Smackdown series has been the best wrestling game series to date. Great controls (most of the time), lots of game/match modes, nice level of polish, and lots of fan-service in these games.

20. The Legend of Legaia (PS1) - My favorite JRPG. Good story, memorable characters, and cool abilities/spells; but most of all a unique and addicting battle-system that involves using a combination of button-commands to unlock special attacks and spells. Which kept you constantly fiddling with it to discover new attacks; which helped a lot to prevent random-encounters from getting repetitive.

I enjoyed reading these and feel like I know some of the members backgrounds a bit more. Anyway, here is my top 10:

1) Starcraft - Played this game so much in my teens. First and only time a game felt more like a sport or skill than a game. Once you get the point of having a high APM, the game changes entirely.

2) Shenmue - I couldn't believe this game when it came out. I still play it regularly.

3) Phantasy Star - My favorite old school RPG. The story and setting suck me in.

4) Crazy Taxi - Pure arcade fun.

5) Galaga - I can never resist putting a quarter in. The food court next to campus at UC-Boulder has a galaga machine that I would play almost daily. Now, the Max Retro Pub in downtown Tulsa has one along with vodka slurpees. The adult nerd rejoices.

6) Halo - I was SO late to the party on this one. I mistook it as a total bro game. But the story is so geeky and fantastic. It also plays fantastic.

7) Castlevania - The original on the NES has most of my childhood memories. It was my and a friend of mine's favorite game growing up.

8 -  Pokemon - Spent every bus ride from 5th through 6th grade catching them all.

9) Sonic 2 - The epitome of 90s platforming for me.

10) Guitar Hero - I don't care what anyone says. These games are pure fun.

There are in no particular order because...how could I?

Pokemon-- Blue was my first, Gold/Silver are probably my favorite. HG/SS were great remakes.
Sonic-- I guess my most played are Sonic Adventure and Sonic Adventure Battle 2. But love the original Sonic and Sonic 2 for the Genesis.
Halo-- Geeked out so much when the first one came out. Still a good franchise.
Legend of Zelda-- Hard to pick a favorite on this one but my childhood was a lot of Ocarina of Time/Majora's Mask.
Starfox 64-- the 3DS remake of this is fun, too!
Final Fantasy-- Still haven't gotten around to playing all of them but VII and IX are my favorites so far
Oddworld-- TOTALLY underrated but Munch's Odysee is one of my all-time favorite games. So weird!
Mario Party/Mario Kart-- Any of them. Such great games to play with friends.
Animal Crossing-- Maybe a girl game, but a great feel-good franchise
GTA-- And other Rockstar games like Red Dead and LA Noire

I'm still young and getting around to playing a lot of games though!

Glad I did a search instead of starting a new thread...

Fallout 2 - The first time I splattered a two-headed Brahmin open, I gave a sick little giggle over the realization that I could do just about anything I wanted. Alongside Daggerfall, I consider this among the first open world/sandbox games, but unlike Elder Scrolls, Black Isle managed to fill the world with interesting characters, socio-political depth, history, and a compelling narrative. 15 years old, and it still shits all over Fallout 3.

Final Fantasy VI - The first Dragon Warrior introduced me to JRPGs, and while I played plenty of others during the NES/SNES years, this was the first that I fell in love with so much, I'd remember it vividly even decades later. Simply a great story, memorable characters, open and exotic world, and a fantastic mix of magic and technology, all wrapped up in Yoshitaka Amano's beautiful design. It's truly disheartening to see how far Square has fallen when you consider that they were once capable of a game like this.

Shadow Hearts: Covenant - Alongside Nocturne, Shadow Hearts reinvented genres and destroyed my expectations, opening my eyes to the idea that games could and should offer more mature experiences than the usual "unlikely kid saves the world" or "brutish military thugs and explosions" motifs. Great mix of exotic music, intricate Baroque design sensibilities, and a combat system that, once you adjust to it, craps all over the usual "hit X repeatedly" variety, or Square's recent attempts to add unnecessary complexity to random encounters.

Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne - The game that changed everything about how I look at video games, and especially JRPGs. Dark as pitch, creepy as hell, challenging, philosophical, and utterly engrossing. I've seen Megami Tensei fans described as an obsessive bunch, particularly about this game, but it's one of those things where you really have to play it for yourself to understand. I've tried recommending this to tons of people, but not one of them has actually been willing to pick it up.

Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 3 - SMT: Nocturne meets slice of life stories and dating sims and some dude who looks like Jesus if he were a crazy hobo. Where Nocturne goes for the dark and apocalyptic, Persona edges more toward a stylish mix of psychedelia, pop art, and Jungian philosophy in a way that's simultaneously weird as hell, yet weirdly comforting. If Ryu Murakami made video games, he'd probably make games like this.

Super Metroid- Easily the best Metroid ever, and in my opinion, the greatest game Nintendo ever developed. The creepy, alien soundrack, the atmosphere of isolation, the bizarre environment... it's about as close to perfect as a game can get. Despite (stupidly) selling most of my SNES games when I was a kid, this is the only one I couldn't bring myself to part with, and it's still in my collection, in almost perfect shape, now that I'm in my 30's.

System Shock 2 - Take the isolation of Super Metroid, the body horror of Resident Evil, pitch it all into space on a derelict ship controlled by an insane artificial intelligence, and you have one of the scariest and most well-designed games ever created. "Look at you, hacker... " is probably permanently etched in the brain of anyone who's ever played this, and dozens of games - from Dead Space to Portal - owe SS2 a massive debt of gratitude for giving them an instruction manual.

Gotta stop here, but I'll throw in Valkyria Chronicles, Ogre Battle, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II, Resident Evil 4, Fatal Frame II, Nier, Metal Gear Solid 3, and Witcher 2 as being on the list, too.

2.) Zone of the Enders: The 2nd Runner - This game is quite literally one of the funnest games I've played in my life. It has an excellent story, fast paced combat, amazing art style, the only downside is that it has mediocre voice acting.

You are the first person I have ever seen or known that included a Z.O.E. game in their top ten! That automatically makes you one of the coolest people ever!

It is such an amazing game, hands down the best 3D action game I have ever played. I do prefer the first one, but both a equal in awesome!

1. Shenmue and Shenmue II: There are very few games that I feel are works of art, but this is hands down one of them. The game seriously grips my emotions the whole way through; love the story, love the characters, love the setting, love the collecting, love the gameplay, love it, love it, love it! This may sound a little over dramatic, but I honestly feel like part of my life will remain incomplete if Shenmue III never gets made. I have never played such a satisfying and captivating game in my whole life :)

2. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time:
This is one of those games that deserves every little bit of hype and praise it gets. If it weren't for Shenmue's emotional pull on me, this game would be number 1 since it is definitely the closest game to prefection I have ever had the pleasure of playing.

3. Final Fantasy VII:
I know a lot of people say it is overrated and whatnot, however I think it deserves its accolades and reputation as being one of the best, if not the best RPG of all time. It was the game that made me fall in love with RPGs, so I owe it a lot.

4. Half Life 2:
By a country mile the best FPS I've ever played. It is also the most imersive and entertaining FPS ever created imo. I have played it almost annually since it was released in 2004.

5. Zone of the Enders: The best action game I have ever played, and also the most underrated game I have ever played. The gameplay is extremely fast paced, fluid, and simple, yet challenging. Also everything about this game screams Anime, which is a big reason why I love it so much!

6. Super Mario 64:
I owe this game my obsession with gaming. I have played through this game so many times since I got it with my N64 back in 1996 that it isn't even a challenge at all, but that still doesn't stop me from replaying it frequently. Such a satisfying game.

7. Marvel vs Capcom 2:
The most entertaining and insane fighting game I have ever played. If anyone is curious, my dream team is Mega Man, Cable, and Ryu (Projectile Types FTW!)

8. Resident Evil (Gamecube remake):
This is still the most genuinely scary game I have ever played, and is the best looking game on the GC imo. While it was not my first RE game, it was the title that made me fall in love with the franchise and the survival horror genre.

9. Perfect Dark:
Until Half Life 2, this game was my goto FPS game, and even games like Halo couldn't even unseat it as my favorite FPS of all time.

10. Radiant Silvergun:
The best SHMUP ever created and the best game to be produced by the legendary developer Treasure. One of the only expensive games I have ever played that deserves its high price 110%.

Found this topic. My lifetime favorite video games are pretty much as the following

The entire The Sims People Simulator series 1 series 2 and series 3 for the PC is my most favorite because it was unlike any game at the time, before the first series of expansion and stuff packs came out I never played another game like this game, I vaguely remember wishing for a video game that I could do whatever I wanted without restriction since I was 5. then I got the sims 1 patched version for my 13th birthday, I loved this game so much I played this game more than any other video game. I still have dreams of this game to this day, but no longer play it because my old disc was corrupted  by advanced hackers in my neighborhood at that time. and  now I moved onto much better The Sims 2 Series on PC today. sometimes 3.

Duke Nukem 3D
, here is another game I was amazed with, it was the vary first FPS Genre video game that I played. that lets you destroy the level's environment like shoot out tv screens and shatter glass as well as put bullet holes in the walls and the first game that had more realistic blood effects

StarCraft 1 PC, This is a top down futuristic war Strategy game, some people joke and call this game "Command And Conquer in outer space" because that is exactly what this game is based off of. this game has a real great storyline for nerds like myself, you can skip the story but I don't recommend it. I recommend hearing the story because it's really well done in my opinion. yet the talking portraits and voices in the mission briefing can look kind of cheesy to some people I can imagine.

Heavy Gear 1 another futuristic war simulator only this one is a 1st person shooter with customizable mechs called Gears. you can build your own robot from the ground up and put whatever guns armor and body parts you want on them. you unlock more weapons and mech body parts as you progress in Tour Of Duty or Story Mode. Or you can use the default unlockable mechs for your missions if you don't want to  build your own.

Call Of Duty Series
, I was also amazed at this one when it first came out, it's a FPS genre video game. Earlier titles in the series let you partake in re-enactment of real life World War II battles that once took place in the real WWII.

"Viet Cong Purple Haze" PC and "Viet Cong Fist Alpha" expansion pack. this game is an easy to understand squad strategy game based on the real life US Vietnam Conflict/War. That took place in the mid 1960's. it has a massive Single Player Campaign mode plus a multiplayer. Do not buy the Steam version of this rare PC game, because it is not the same game at  ALL.

Roller Coaster Tycoon Series, a wonderful game that let you customize and build and manage you own amusement or theme parks but this game 1 and 2 does not run correctly on Windows 10 PC's

NHL 2002
, the vary first hockey game I ever played before and I have  a lot of nostalgia for this game as well

3. Final Fantasy VI (SNES)
4. Super Metroid (SNES)
5. The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past (SNES)

7. Shadow of the Colossus (PS2)

OK, after finishing Dragon Quest XI and giving it time to sink in, I’ve decided to officially add it to my personal top 10 list. Seriously, it’s the most fun I’ve had with an RPG in MANY years, and blew me away in almost every facet. I can’t overstate how much I loved it. The only issue is the weaker 3rd act.
Sorry, Vampire Savior, you might be my favorite fighting game, but overall fighting games have never been a top genre for me.

1. Q*Bert (Arcade)
2. TMNT (Arcade)
3. Final Fantasy VI (SNES)
4. Super Metroid (SNES)
5. The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past (SNES)
6. Batman Arkham Asylum (PS3/X360)
7. Shadow of the Colossus (PS2)
8. Bioshock Infinite (PS3)
9. Castlevania: Symphony of the Night (PS1)
10. Dragon Quest XI (PS4)

Honorable mention:
Vampire Savior (Saturn), Portal, Chrono Cross, Final Fantasy X, Mega Man 2, Gauntlet Dark Legacy, Streets of Rage 2, Shinobi 3, Bioshock, Dragon Quest VIII, Tekken Tag Tournament
