Title: My video game inspired Perler bead projects
Post by: monochrome on June 07, 2011, 07:39:56 pm
Perler beads are round, plastic beads that you place on a pegboard to create an image, then cover with parchment paper and iron to melt the beads together into a solid picture.  Here is what I have done so far (click on thumbnail for larger picture):

Have you ever seen Sprite Stitch? It's a community of video game crafters....and we've got tons of Perler/Hama bead crafters on there!
The forums are really where everyone shows off their work, but the main site is:

Valis!!

Nice stuff, love the Donkey Kong and the Earthworm Jim in particular. One of my friends got into perler bead art for a while, but I think he got bored of it (he made some cool stuff though, including a few Kirby sprites). I'd never have the patience to do this.

I have been lurking there for awhile as a guest, but haven't got around to registering yet.  I will soon, I promise!

Thanks so much, it is probably my favorite one I've done so far.  As of now, I am not selling them.  But I have, surprisingly, been asked this question quite a bit lately.  I'll keep you up to date if I change my mind.  I need to look at the tax stuff, because I already have at least one person inquiring about a very large piece.

Here is my latest, finished last night:
gsenguardebeadsprite
Enguarde the swordfish, from Donkey Kong Country.

I get the original sprite sheets for most of these from spriters-resource.com, by the way.  Then it's just a matter of blowing them up and putting a grid on them.

@pceslayer I fixed your post w/ html img tags. I've had this same issue w/ some of my posts, and have found the bbcode fails miserably.

edit- Also, the Chip is great. Love me some Rescue Rangers.

As in the 'covering his face' version of a boo?  I could make a small one..  Glow in the dark beads are sold in mixed bags so I had to buy a bunch more bags just to get enough blue to make this one.  Now I have a ton of leftover glow orange and red.  blah

My one question, how do you not get the paper to stick to your beads when melting them with an iron?
Whenever I have tried this in the past my beads get stuck to the paper and some of them peel off  :-\

Also here is one I made a while back!

Hey, awesome Tails!  I still need to make one of him and Knuckles..

As to your question: are you using ironing paper?  You can also use parchment paper (sometimes called baking paper) but don't ever use wax paper!!  If you use ironing or parchment paper, the beads should separate from it as they cool down.

Unfortunately, they were all destroyed on individual one-ship suicide missions against entire armadas..

This looks amazing. How long did it take?

Do you display all the ones you've made?

Thanks, first of all!  I'd say I spent around 11 to 12 hours on this one.  It was alot easier do to having large areas of solid color.  I display many of the ones I've made, however I also have a box full of extraneous sprites I've made that I don't have wall space for.  This includes many of the Castlevania and Donkey Kong Country ones.  I like to have sprites from a variety of games adorning the walls.. so when I go crazy over a certain sub-set (like space shooters) I tend to have a few that go in the box.

I have given or traded away several sprites to friends (including the big Sub-Zero portrait, Ken, all the Mega Man 2 bosses, The Legend of Zelda wall hang).

How do you display them? I have a few little ones that have been made for me but I haven't found a good way to display them since they don't stand up on their own.

I probably can't be much help here.. I just thumbtack all mine to the wall, even Apocalypse is held up with thumbtacks.
