Title: Where are you from?
Post by: brettybluevein on August 19, 2011, 06:11:06 pm
I thought this might be cool to introduce where we are at, and it also might be helpful in locating games if we could help out other people in our region. Always nice to have a fellow collector keeping their eyes open for that one elusive item.

Me....I live in Edmond, OK, which is really close to OKC. Most of the used game stores around here are pretty lame, but if you stay on it, you can find some gems here and there. I moved here from Dallas and still try to hit those shops when I visit.

Right now I'm focusing on growing my Sega Saturn collection, so if you have any for sale or have seen some good deals, please give me a heads up. Thanks.

Well I'm not from here, but I just moved to British Columbia. Close to the Vancouver area. I haven't gone out to garage sales and gaming stores yet so I don't know how good the scene is. There are a few ebgames and things like that close to where I live. i guess those are the easiest places to hit up first (not that they ever have anything worth buying)

I'm in Gatineau, Quebec. So that people actually know what I'm talking about, it's right next to Ottawa (the national capital!).

Game hunting is HORRIBLE here though (mostly crappy flea markets (15$ for a game boy game? wtf?), terrible people on kijiji/craigslist (seeing ads for 100$ NES isn't rare), only 1 game store and it sucks), so I do my game shopping online for the most part (never Ebay though, screw that place... and I do hit the flea markets once every few weeks in hopes of deals).

WHHHATTTTT?! I just moved away from Montreal!! Gosh damnit. *sigh* I like montreal so much more than Vancouver :(

Game hunting was terrible in the area, $80 for FFV cart..goes for like $5 on ebay. I find ebay is worth it if you hunt, it'll be a bit more than a flea market but I've gotten games that are worth way over $100 for under $50.

Agreed, I've found some good deals on eBay for sure, especially if you are talking bundles/ lots. Sadly, the used game stores in my area are severely lacking in the Sega Saturn department so I'm always searching online for deals...

@brettybluevein I have a post in the marketplace, somewhere listing my extra Saturn games, if your interested.

I'm currently living in Midland, Michigan. Midland it self lacks decent game stores, but there are a couple good ones in Bay City & Saginaw, which is only like 20 mins away. some prices are whack and the lack Saturn games most of the time. Since my main collection is my Saturn US release collection, it forces me to buy online a lot of the time. There are also a couple weekend markets about an hour and a half away. I'd like to check them out soon, but since I work 6 days a week, finding time is difficult.

oh, actually at the nearby flea markets the people sell for more than ebay (like some guy selling multiple copies of Super Mario RPG for 80$, trying to make people believe it's worth more, when it's for 50$ or less on Ebay).

I'm from the middle of nowhere in North Carolina. Absolutely no game stores for 40 miles. I had to order from the Funcoland catalog back before the internet. Occasionally we'd go to Greensboro where there was an Electronics Boutique (pre-EB Games) and a Funcoland. After eBay came along, I mainly started getting my games from there. Funcoland was notorious for just giving you the cartridge, and I want my games complete. EB put fucking stickers all over their games, some of which to this day I have been unable to remove.

@brettybluevein

I'm a member of the Oklahoma City Retro Gamers Society (founding member) so I trade with some guys on there. I also hit up the usuals around the city (Vintage Stock, etc). I hit up CL and ebay from time to time like the rest of us too.

I'm from Orange County, California... and I'm still here!  Games here are all sunbleached or covered in grease!  Boxes and manuals are immediately discarded!

Agh, that must be so frustrating!  There's a GameStop in San Francisco that, for some gawdawful reason, thought the best place to put their PSP games would be next to the window.  Half of them are sunbleached completely on the front, while the others have completely sunbleached spines.  It makes me want to cry every time I see it, especially since (due to that poor choice of product placement, I'm sure) they have older, harder to find new and pre-owned PSP titles that would be mint otherwise..  I'd stop going if that particular branch didn't have a decent selection of CIB pre-owned PS2 and GC games, too...

At least I'm not the only one from the west coast...  I'm living in Oakland, California, which is a great place to live weather-wise.  Also, not far away from San Francisco in case I want a taste of that nightlife.  A good number of GameStops around, but not much more than that.  I'm sure there are good flea markers around, but I haven't gotten around to going to any yet.  :\

Gawd, I miss EB, EB Games, and Funcoland!  Remember when we could rent consoles at Blockbuster Video?  I have to admit that I got my mom to rent the Virtual Boy more times than I could remember.  I actually liked playing tennis on that system...  the 3DS gives me a headache...

I'm from Salt Lake City, Utah.  I've lived here pretty much my whole life.  The retro gaming scene seems pretty dead, but I have ran into a few people from digitalpress and atariage.  There's actually a fair amount of stores that sell old games, although most of them sell mainly used music and movies.  Oh, and before anyone asks or wonders, I'm not a Mormon.  :)

Hello, I'm from Nampa Idaho which is about 20 min west of Boise. Not many flea markets around her but lots of thrift stores and pawn shops. There are also lots of yard sales in the summer but nothing during the winter due to snow. I frequent all these places on a regular basis and usually find good deals every week.

Hey @tpugmire I used to go to Grey Whale when I was in the Salt Lake area, Are they still around? this was about 7-8 years ago.

@atariboy We still have quite a few Greywhale's here (SLC).  Also, there's some Play-n-trades as well.  4 that I know of still, several have closed up shop.  I've had some pretty good luck at the swap meets, and there's a retro store in provo called Mario's.  There's a cell phone store that's been buying up all kinds of crap off KSL I'm hoping to check out this weekend too.  I've also discovered 2 comic book shops in ogden called heebeegeebees that carry a ton of retro.  I've done way too much driving LOL

The Play-n-Trade in West Valley is closing.  Thy have everything 30% to 90% off, if they have anything that someone actually wants.  All the cartridge games are 40% off and I still couldn't find anything that I wanted when I was there last week.  That cell phone store (Wireless Revolution, I think) advertises that they have thousands of games, but I went there a while back and they didn't have much of anything, and what they did have was overpriced.  They might be better now, but I wouldn't make the trip just for that.  I've had pretty good luck with the swap meet too, but I haven't been this summer yet.  I've been too busy.

I'm on the Gold Coast, Australia. Collecting here is hard, very few second hand stores/pawn stores have anything 'oldish' anymore, and there's only one retail chain that carries that sort of thing (and they tend to be a bit pricey). Basically, you gotta eBay or get lucky with garage sales, or hope there's a specialist store near you.

A "flea market" (the kind that has bays filled with premade storefronts) near me sells retro games, but gouges a bit.

We have something similar in Michigan, there are 2 "nearby", which is like a hour or so trek. They are called Weekend Public Markets and are open Friday - Sunday. I used to go there a lot as a kid and have always wanted to go back as an adult to see if there are any decent deals. The problem is getting people who want to go. Now that I have Saturdays off I may try to talk @matt and another buddy of mine into going with me.

I'm from a small town in Ohio. Unfortunately, my options are very limited when it comes to game stores. We have one GameStop in a neighboring town and one used game store. I don't like to go in the used game store often as the owner is not exactly a friendly person.

First off, Welcome to the site, moonlightvalkyrie!!!

Secondly, *Very* Cool screen-name, btw :)

Thirdly, it's funny to me that 3 of my best gaming friends (never met irl) are all from Ohio!

On topic, there's actually only one (very long) state to drive across between us...and...that would be PA.

I live at the Jersey shore (*ducks* to avoid all of the inevitable incoming "Jersey Shore" the show jokes).

Literally.

On the shore.
(My back yard has a dock to jump off of) :P

I'm actually (logistically & geographically, at least) pretty conveniently located in that I can be:

In Atlantic City in about 1/2 hour,
In Philadelphia in 45 minutes to an hour, and
NYC in 1.5 to 2 hours.

I'm in Winona a small town in rural southern Missouri.  There isn't a game store within 70 miles of here, an thrift stores and pawn shops are *almost* out of the question.  Sometimes you can find a deal but not often.  You will never find a game in yard/garage sales though.  I have found used lingerie, bongs and crack pipes though.   ???

I'm in Lincoln, Nebraska.  Very rarely are there flea markets, but there are several stores that carry retro games as well a good variety of thrift stores and pawn shops that occasionally have something good.

It's a great place to live; big enough to have everything I want but still has a small-town feeling.  I'd hate to have to move.

I'm from up here in Cave City, AR.  It's north-central Arkansas about 2.5 hours north of Little Rock.
Around here game chasing isn't too bad.  I have found some awesome stuff in pawn shops and dirt malls (They call them flea markets).  We don't have any flea markets to speak of.  Here lately it seams most of my finds have been at Game X Change.  Everyone else thinks they have gold if it's not a disc.
I do a lot of driving to look for games.  I'm in Jonesboro (about 1.5 hours away) a lot. I'm in Little Rock and Memphis quite a bit too.  Since I cover a lot of ground, I can find stuff pretty often.

I would say so, they both have a wide selection of old and new.

Videogames then and now is at 4351 N Harlem Ave in Norridge just north of The HIP. A bit easier to shop here all there stuff is out for you to hold and look at. Last time I was there not too many NES games. The owner is Sean Kelly who made/makes Multi Carts for the Vectrex. They don't really have an innovatory of the games so you have to look through everything(some times they are in order but most of the time they are not).

He Also has a second much smaller shop at 963 Elmhurst Road, Des Plaines, IL

People Play games is at 3268 N Clark(just a few blocks south of Wrigley Field). Most of the games are in locked cases(in alphabetical order), so you have to ask to have them all unlocked. good selection a bit more expensive. They do have a good selection of NES games, and Sega CD games. they even have stacks of controller overlays for the Atar 5200, Colecovison, and Intelavison.

Both have just about any used system you could want.

Grew up in the Quad cities on the Illinois side of the river and am currently living in dubuque Iowa. There is a gamestop and a video games ect. here but if you ever come here the VGE overcharges and has very few carts, and the gamestop is a small store with little selection.

Maldita sea creia que era el unico mendigo Mexicano por aqui  :'(

PS: There is not such thing as a proper description for the Quiubo, practically kinda means something like what's up, how you doing or just Hi, it depends in how do you use it  but without of doubt the best one is: Que onda puto  ;D

NUNCA!

Estas loca in tu cabeza?

Una cabeza que es (grande o grosso:) = El Cabezon!

Es la verdad  :P

Tambien, Bienvenidos a VGC doa(tetas)fan  ;D

Seriously, though - I've never looked at/used Google Translate, or anything like it in my life.

Mi Espanol (castilliano) *is* getting a little rusty since I haven't used it very much recently - I was just changing your "s'up, bitch is the best" to "the chupa cabra is the best"  ;)

Sabes que yo diciendo, ese  8)

*protip* The really, realiest, bestest of the bestest is one a friend of mine used to greet his (hot & female) customers (the ones that he hoped didn't know Spanish :-[) when they walked up to his register to order some food...

..."te cojo, chica"?

*still* cracks me up because they all thought that he was asking for their food order when he said that  :-X

I'm a Colorado native and still live here despite a huge boom in the price of housing and overcrowding in recent years (damn marijuana laws. . .).

The video game/collecting scene has always been good here, especially compared to places on the east coast which I here is mostly terrible. We have a ton of retro game store, pawn shops, thrifts (most suck though), but sadly only one flea market that is 90% resellers. Regardless I do pretty well in finding stuff, although like everywhere else the pickings have become more slim in the past few years due to the sharp rise in collecting/reselling.

Wouldn't say I hate it. I wouldn't live there though. Between the weather and personal beliefs, I don't think I could live there. I do like their gun right. Since I live in California, and well, we have too many complicated and vague gun laws lol

The only thing I hate about Texas is the Longhorns, but that's from the old SWC football days.  Woo Pig Sooie!

I've never been to Austin, but I go to Dallas a couple of times a year.  It's always a good time.

Moved to Dubai a few months back. I hope to stay here for a 2-3 years and then head back to Canada, we'll see. Everyone I met here was only supposed to stay a couple of years and they stayed 10+.

The gaming scene here isn't very good. It's a newer city so there is no retro gaming. The malls sell games at $100. I found a little wholesaler outside of the city (on the edge of the desert) who sells to other stores. They also do individual sales and you can buy new games there for ~$45-50. They mostly sell PAL though which is not what I collect. I go buy my games there (That don't have DLC, as my PS4 is NTSC), the ones I want to play and not collect.

For the collection, I make orders online before I head back to Canada to visit. I'm going back soon so I am scouring Ebay for deals. They'll be waiting for me when I get back and I can enjoy opening mail, hehe.

I'm from Michigan, in around the Ann Arbor area. I was born and raised on the East Coast in New Hampshire. Moved to Michigan in '09.

I don't know much about the collecting scene here since I don't usually have the means to go out game hunting yet.. There's a nice retro game store near where I live but I usually just browse what they have and don't buy anything.  :P
