Title: Children of the 90s. (And 80s!!!)
Post by: darko on September 06, 2011, 02:21:21 pm
I grew up in the 90s and I'm sure most of you did too. So I have a few questions for you:

What was the best/your favorite 90s movie?

What was the best/your favorite 90s cartoon?

what was the best/your favorite 90s TV Show?

What was the best/your favorite 90s band?

If you could bring back a single clothing trend from the 90s what would it be?

What is/was your favorite game of the 90s (that you actually played in the 90s)

Only 1 rule: Any TV series or cartoon had to start in the 90s (so no DuckTales, unfortunately).

If you grew up in the 80s just sub 80s for 90s!

My answers are:

Empire Records
Batman: The Animated Series
The X-Files
Nirvana
Jnco (not that I would wear Jnco jeans today, but they were freaking awesome).
Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past & Illusion of Gaia (sorry, I have to have 2).

I was born in 89 so I'm somewhat of a 90s child :P

Independence Day
Animaniacs
Friends
Slipknot
When I see people trying to bring the 80s and 90s back, a little part of me dies inside.
Diablo

Band - Disturbed
clothing trend - Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles being worn by everyone because it was the thing.

'83 here so I did 80's instead, sorry. Also, I'm not doing my favorites NOW, I'm doing what I remember most fondly.

Movie: The Dark Crystal
Cartoon: Care Bears
TV: Who's the Boss? (My mom LOVED this show, so we never missed it. Haven't seen it since it originally aired though.)
Music: I didn't listen to music in the 80's or 90's much. My first concert was Savage Garden.
Fashion: Totally the pink/neon green combo'd clothes.
Game: Super Mario Bros. 3 (NES) or Jumpman Jr. (ColecoVision). I put more time into those two games than I watched Who's the Boss?...

I was born in 82, So I went with 80s also. like @amauriel this is totally based on nostalgia.

Movie: Big (I still watch this nearly once a week)
Cartoon: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
TV: Golden Girls, I'm pretty sure my family never missed an episode
Music: - I didn't listen to music as a kid.
Fashion: SLAP BRACELETS!
Game: Centipede or anything I could get my hands on in an Arcade, or lots and lots of Frogger on our Atari.

Born in 79.

Movie: The Goonies
Cartoon: He-Man/Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
TV: Mr. Wizard
Music: Poison
Fashion: Parachute pants (had one pair and thought I was Micheal Jackson)
Game: I will forever remember playing Kool-Aid Man, ET and Pac-Man on the Atari 2600

Also want to point out that my generation had the best stuff. Fact. :)

I was born in '83 but I consider myself a child of the 90s. Maybe a child of 1988 through the 90s. I definitely remember slap bracelets and parachute pants! If I was going to go 80s I would do:

Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom/Batman
TMNT
Alf
Beetlejuice Soundtrack
Slap Bracelets
Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!!

Movie: The Sandlot
Cartoon: TaleSpin
TV: Friends
Music: The Offspring
Fashion: I hated all 90s clothing.
Game: Diablo or Warcraft II

Cartoon:  Sonic the Hedgehog (SatAM) -- since TMNT started in the 80's.
Music:  Garbage
Fashion:  ska-punk
Game:  Donkey Kong Country

80s movie? Back to the Future II
80s cartoon? Simpsons
80s TV Show? Quantum Leap
80s band? Paula Abdul/Janet Jackson back then... Smiths/Morrissey now :)
80s clothing trend? Fingerless gloves (I still sport knit ones when I have the chance)
80s game? Tetris

90s movie? Independence Day
90s cartoon? Daria (soooo many others! I miss Liquid Television so much)
90s TV Show? X-Files
90s band? Boys II Men in the early 90s, Radiohead in the late 90s (crazy to think of them now as a "90s band")
90s clothing trend? I kinda miss wallet chains and the nicer looking grunge stuff
90s game? Chrono Cross

Movie - Dick Tracy

Classic.

Cartoon - Seriously, too many. Doug, Rugrats, Animaniacs, Freakazoid, Darkwing Duck, Spiderman... the list is almost endless

Everyone loved The Tick back then, too.  Rocko's Modern Life, all the Batman cartoons, Gargoyles, X-Men... so much good stuff.
Game - Toejam and Earl: Panic on Funkotron

I was so obsessed with that game.  But since I was only 10 or so when I played it, I only kind of understood how to play it.  A difficult game for me at the time, but one of the few I could play cooperatively with my brother.  Looking back at it now, its quirkiness reminds me of games like Earthbound.

I was going to say Alf as well, but I caught part of an episode a few months ago and boy it's not as good as I thought it was when I was little.  Maybe I just liked puppets?
Title: Re: Children of the 90s. (And 80s!!!)
Post by: darko on September 13, 2011, 01:03:27 am
@varkias Wow...Secret of Nihm is probably the greatest animated movie of all time. I can't believe I forgot it when I was making my list! The first time I watched it, it was like I was in a trance. A bomb could have gone off outside and I would have had zero idea. I can still watch it to this day and enjoy every minute of it.

@desocietas Oh come on, what's not to love about a puppet alien who's primary objective in life is to eat cats? If I sat down and tried to watch it now I'd probably get bored pretty quickly but it was just so freaking awesome to me back then it had to be on my list!

I checked out some Rocko's Modern Life last night for the first time since the 90s and I actually laughed quite a bit. If they brought it back now it would probably have to go on Adult Swim. There is some pretty crazy shit in the cartoons that came out around that time. The episode I watched was all about Mrs. Bighead trying to get Rocko to have sex with her while Mr. Bighead was at work. If they showed that on Nickelodeon in 2011 it would start riots!

So worth it.  It's definitely in the realm of games like Earthbound and Katamari Damacy for me.  Doesn't work to explain the game - you just gotta play it.  Like nothing else.  And definitely need to do co-op and watch your friend fall off several levels of Earth and try to catch up to you while you walk around opening presents (really!).

I *loved* The Pretender... I'm glad someone else was watching it then.  Kind of a precursor for Alias and such.

I was born in 1975 so I'll go with mostly 80s stuff.

Movie: Star Wars (it's really 1977 but I didn't see until I was older)
Cartoon: G.I. Joe
TV: A-Team
Music: I didn't really get into music until later. I did (still do actually) have two Weird Al record albums.
Game: Sid Meier's Pirates! for Commodore 64

I played Pirates so much I knew where everything was without looking at the included map (very nice map too). I'd even recognize treasure locations just from the land shape and trees. That game is so good, the remake isn't bad either but the original is most impressive. I still have it and a working C64, rarely set it up though.

I'm born in 1991, so that makes me a 90's kid!

Movie: Toy Story

Cartoon: Pokemon

Show: Goosebumps

Band: Snap!

Clothing: Absolutely nothing. How horrendous were the clothes in those days. Oh my god.....

Game: Kirby's Adventure

Favorite 90s movie?  Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2
Favorite 90s cartoon?  Sailor Moon
Favorite 90s TV show?  Cartoons aside, the show I watched most in the 90s that started in the 90s was probably Seinfeld. (The pilot was in '89, but the first episode was in '90. Does that count?)
Favorite 90s band?  The Smashing Pumpkins
Clothing trend from the 90s? Bubble watches! Anyone else remember those?
Favorite game of the 90s?  Sonic the Hedgehog 2--it was the first console game that I ever owned. I remember one summer playing it over and over while listening to Sublime albums on repeat. I got to where I could pretty much beat the game in one sitting.

The kind on skate shoes? I had those, though I think they still sell new ones at Hot Topic. I do remember spring laces being pretty distinctly 90s...
