Title: Board Games!
Post by: jobocan on April 08, 2013, 07:17:18 pm
I'm surprised we haven't made a topic about these yet, since they're very similar to video games and I figure some of the people here play these games.

I'm in a bit of board game mood right now and looking for new games to play/buy and figured I'd ask what you guys like, maybe it'll give me ideas and we can basically all recommend games to each other.... I'll post later but first I wanna see what you guys think!

I want this game back, soooo badly. But I was seeing it go for around $100, used. Unless I get lucky and find it a flea mart for cheap, I don't think I'll be doing any board-game dungeon-raiding anytime soon.  :(

It's such a cool game, too. You get to battle monsters and creatures, gain gold and treasure, cast spells. It really feels like a D&D video game, on a board.

Before talking about specific board games, here's what I've been doing recently when a game catches my attention:
http://www.dicetower.com/game_reviews.html (or you can check their youtube channel)

I check if these guys reviewed it. If you check alphabetically, you'll see they reviewed a TON of games and in general give me a good idea of if I'll like a game or not.

Note - Dungeon! even cheaper: https://www.funagain.com/control/product?product_id=026556 (and if you do a 75$ order in the US you get free shipping)

Super Dungeon Explore is really fun, but you have to justify the $100 price tag.

I really like playing Small World too, it's like Risk, on a smaller scale and with fantasy races.

Descent is another really good dungeon crawling game, but I believe it's expensive too.

One that I really want to get my hands on is Zombicide, which is a zombie apocalypse survival game. But it's also like $80. And the just finished up a Kickstarter to add some expansions to it!

I'm just a vanilla trivia guy. I've been playing Trivia Pursuit as long as I can remember. These days though, I play a lot of Hi Ho Cherry-O and Hungry Hungry Herd.

For me my favorites are shorter games and party games. Stuff like Bang! or Cards Against Humanity and Say Anything and Munchkin. Quick games that you can play for a while and that stay fun the whole time.
I also really like abstract games, stuff like GIPF, Go, Gemblo, Hey That's My Fish, Pentago, Tsuro. Not fast games all the time (damn friends taking years to make single moves in Go when I tell them the game is done already and they can just stop playing), but fun and strategic. Oh, and if you want something cool check out Khet, you shoot actual lasers in that one :D
I've been getting into a few other games now like some deck-building ones (Dominion, Resident Evil) and some coop games (Ghost Stories (which is awesome and crazy impossibly hard) and Pandemic), but I am expanding my horizons a bit.

Also been doing a few kickstarters which I think is a pretty good idea for board games. So far I received Gemblo, Kanzume Goddess and Tentacle Bento (sort of kickstarter) from there. I'm waiting on a couple more too that should come out soon.

One of my big issues with some games is time... I can barely pay attention to a single game that takes 2 hours to finish... That means, no matter how awesome Twilight Imperium may be, I'll never play it because it lasts 8 hours. I played through a game of Shogun once (which is a great game) but by the end (almost 3 hours) I couldn't take it anymore.

I'm always looking for more games though. Yesterday I just ordered a few and I'm starting to make a wishlist of games for future orders. I hope to have a room filled with board games eventually :p

I helped fund a game called Guilds of Cadwallon a while back and that looks like it'll be a pretty fast and fun game. You might want to watch for that when it launches.

If we are talking card based games too. Then I have to mention:

Dominion and its expansion sets.
Citadels

Also back to board games, you wouldn't think it, but Puerto Rico is a really fun and fast game.

Yeah I also count card-based games here, or dice-based. Though I'm not very much into stuff like Magic because you constantly need to be pouring money into it (I passed that phase in high school when I played Yu-Gi-Oh), but card-based stuff like Dominion and Citadels and Bang are definitely my cup of tea. I actually just got a card game called Sentinels of the Multiverse which is sounding pretty cool.

I may need to check out Puerto Rico, I keep hearing good things about it.

I was that weird, boring kid who enjoyed word and vocabulary-based games growing up, like Balderdash and UpWords. Still, can't tell you how many times I played Jumanji. I miss that game. I dusted it off a few months ago only to find that several pieces were missing, and a complete used set seems to be quite pricey nowadays. :'(  I always wanted to try out that Pac Man board game.

EDIT: I take that back. Jumanji's price seems to have gone down a bit since I last checked. Time for a nostalgia trip. ;D

We often play board games when we get together with our friends.  The games we play the most are easily:

Settlers of Catan
Smallworld
Munchkin
Pandemic

I've been throwing together ideas for a zombie-based board game for a couple of years now and I've thought about using Kickstarter to fund it, though it's hard to find the time and drive to do it when I've got so many other things occupying my time.

I have a factory sealed Star Wars Monopoly Collectors Edition from 1996 (I think), and a factory sealed FedEx Monopoly, which appears to be fairly rare.  I got it from the company store a few years back.  Other than that, all the board games at my house are my kids games.

Mad Gab
Megiddo

Guilds of Cadwallon is pretty sweet. The version I have has all the bonuses from the kickstarter. But we played a vanilla game just to get the hang of it.

The reg version doesn't use a board, and only cards and tokens. But its a really fast game and the first match was over before we knew it, like 20-30mins. But it was really pretty fun and looks like its a good game to played when you don't want to marathon things that take multiple hours.

I'm going to use some of my mini paint inks to wash the tokens though. They are really nice and detailed. But you don't really see the details that well. And I want to make them stand out better. But that'll have to wait for after the move.

Here is a link to the game on board game geek: http://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/134711/guilds-of-cadwallon

I think we need to mention it when interesting board game kickstarters pop up, I know I've missed quite a few interesting ones. Guilds of Cadwallon sounds pretty cool, I'll have to keep a lookout on it. Hopefully it pops up on my board game online shop of choice (even with shipping it's cheaper than any local store).

Sucks that shipping to Canada is always expensive with these board game kickstarters.

Currently I have a pledge on this one (which ends soon):

Just a filler game, but it'll go well with the Get Bit deluxe edition I also got from kickstarter :P

Double post, yay!

So I just received a pile of games.

King of Tokyo (giant monsters killing each other, with DICE! and superpowers you can buy... made by the guy who made Magic)
Dice Town (poker-ish dice game where you have to find gold and get victory points, based on what you roll)
Wits & Wagers and Say Anything (both similar-ish party trivia games with a betting mechanic to get points)
Sentinels of the Multiverse (SO MANY CARDS !_! it's a co-op card game with a bunch of pre-made decks for a set of heroes, villains and environments)

Can't wait to have a board game night. A friend of mine also just bought Legendary, the Marvel deck-building game.

Super Dungeon Explore: Von Drakk Manor came yesterday. The minis inside are prolly the best produced yet, and it includes a Dracula and Belmont wanna be. Pretty sweet. I think I'm more impressed with this set than I was for Caverns of Roxxor.

Had a board game night yesterday. Tried the games I recently bought. Sentinels of the Multiverse is really awesome and easy to play (though I can see how it might become challenging). Say Anything is a blast. No one liked Wits and Wagers (partly because one of the people playing just hated it for no reason, and Say Anything is just a lot better). King of Tokyo was fun, but it's really not a 6-player game.

Finally, a friend brought over Quarriors, which he borrowed from his sister, and it kicked ass. Out of all the games we played, Quarriors and Sentinels of the Multiverse were definitely the best, I highly recommend both.

So I just got this game that I think will be of interest to people here.

It's called "Battlecon: War of Indines". The reason I think people on here might like it is that it's actually a 2 player head-to-head 2D fighting game. Literally, it's a board game version of Street Fighter.
Both you and your opponent play a combo of 2 cards (a character-unique style and a base attack card), then you see who has the highest priority and the turn plays out based on that and various effects on both cards. You'll be moving along a small 2D area trying to avoid or hit your opponent so there's thought to be put during every turn. The game ends when either a player has no health left or the timer (which lasts 15 turns) ends.

Very cool game. There's 18 different playable characters which all play very differently (plus some promos if you can find them) and a ton of different play variants for replay value (tag team, 4-player battles, different arenas to fight in, super attacks). And there's a standalone expansion upcoming which adds a ton of characters and even more play variants like a single/multi-player dungeon crawl.

If you like fighting games you should definitely check this out.

My sister picked up Pandemic and Gloom this weekend and we played both of them. I really likedPandemic, and I may need to buy that myself. Gloom on the other hand, while catering to my morbid humor, I wasn't in the mood for story telling and I didn't enjoy it as much as I should have. I'll give Gloom a second chance though, cause I really should like it.

Yeah Pandemic is really fun. I need to try it with the expansion. Apparently it makes it tougher and it seems to add lots of stuff such as infection mutations (and a traitor element, which people seem to prefer ignoring).

Actually, I don't have the game, maybe I should pick up the new reprint some time (since that's the one that will be supported from now on).

So I recently purchased this Wizards of the Coast board game:

Which is a 2012 re-release of this classic TSR board game:

I'd rather have that awesome retro-looking original version, but with all the pieces that goes for a hefty price. They did a great job on the re-release, from all the pics I've seen, though. Pretty dang close to the original (different artwork notwithstanding).

This one, like my recent Star Control purchase for my Sega Genesis, is another purchase that's dear to my heart. As I mentioned in the recent game pick-ups thread, I just found out my dad has stage 4 cancer and we have no time-frame on how long he has left. This was a game we used to play a lot together when I was a kid (the original version). I freaking loved it and always asked him to play it when I visited his house. So this was a purchase so we could enjoy this together while we can, I can have that memory with me forever.

I see this thread was pretty dead until burningdoom posted today, but since I wasn't around for the first time...I LOVE board games. I don't have nearly as many as I do video games, but it seems we've collected quite a few in the last year or so. My favorites are Ticket to Ride and Power Grid, but we picked up both Alien Frontier and Compounded at PAX East this year and I am really enjoying those. We've also got stuff like Alhambra, King of Tokyo, Settlers of Catan, Twilight Imperium 3rd Edition, and a lot of those ones you see on top board game lists like The Dice Tower.

Alien Frontiers is really good. I need to pick up a copy myself. Gotta love Ticket to Ride and Power Grid though! My gaming group has been pretty obsessed with Bohnanza at the moment. What's not to love about a bean farming game!

Other than that, I finally got to bust out Carcassonne on Friday. Just like you said, I don't own as many as I'd like to.

I've been wanting to pick up Alien Frontiers for a while but it's not too easy to find. I did find a copy recently, but I bought a copy of Puzzle Strike instead (also a tough game to find).

My board game collection is starting to get out of control (for me at least), but I slowed down quite a bit:

I have started to collect the Marvel Dice Masters game. I love the look of the cards and the way the tie the dice into the characters. I haven't had a chance to play it yet but it reminds me of when I collected the Marvel cards in the 90s.

One Board Game I'd love to have is Key to the Kingdom

I had a friend in elementary school who had it and I'd want to spend the night at his house just to play it! LOL and when the game got old we'd play imaginary games, pretending we were fighting characters on the monster cards. Once I get ahead on my finances a bit, I'll be tracking this one down :p

They were board games, but I also really want to grab some old Might Max play sets I used to have when I was younger.

I definitely don't have as many board games as what I do of video games, but here are a few favorites of mine...

- Cards Against Humanity
- Munchkin
- Carcassone
- Heroclix
- ....and my recently acquired World Of Warcraft Trivia Pursuit

For those who are wondering how well WoW Trivia Pursuit plays, I'll tell y'all that it covers the series of WoW novels, the PC games on up to and including "The Mists Of Pandaria" expansion, and just plain ol' WoW folklore.   ;D

it will also set up the missions. later expansions will each come with a comic, so as the story progresses new characters will be added to the game
what are your thoughts on this idea.
personally i love it.

the kickstart will start next month.

Mouse Trap was one of my favorites growing up. Others include Monopoly, Sorry, Checkers, Chutes and Ladders, Chess (still is today), and many more I'm forgetting.

I would steer clear of one of my favorite games then: Twilight Imperium III. Just setting up is probably 2-3 hours, depending on how much you've forgotten from the last time you've played. We start after breakfast, set up until lunch, break for lunch, come back and start, break for dinner, come back and play, break for a late-night McDonald's run, more playing, and then sometimes finish it up the next day, unless someone runs away with the game early. :)

I've been on a board game kick lately, so I need to go back and read the rest of this thread (missed it the first time around, I think), but just wanted to let folks know about this Kickstarter:

As for my recent games, I've been enjoying the recent trend of escape room games. I've tried one of the Unlock! games and one of the Exit games and have enjoyed them both. I think they do a pretty good job of mimicking an escape room experience for pretty cheap (sometimes as low as $8 for a fun hour with 3 other friends).

Picked up Forbidden Desert the other day and am looking forward to trying it out!

My game group liked Exit more than unlocked. Maybe it was the one scenario we played, but it didn't feel as streamlined.

Forbidden Desert is good times! Have you played Forbidden Island? It's an earlier game put out by the same people. Very similar but Desert adds more mechanics on top of it.

Yeah, we've only played one scenario of each, and my group liked Unlock! better! I liked them both for different reasons, so I want to try more scenarios to see how it pans out. Unlocked! is definitely more streamlined, but they kinda liked that (especially with the stress of the timer on the app). I liked that Exit kinda let different members tackle different puzzles at the same time.

Yeah, I was torn between Forbidden Desert and Forbidden Island during the recent board game sale on Amazon, but I saw a few reviews where people said Island was a better one to start with, but once they got a hang of Desert, Island seemed too simplistic.

We played the Unlock! games, but found that they are only good for 1 play through.  Luckily they were dirt cheap at GS.

But now that I know about this Board Game thread, may I highly suggest Dice Throne.

I think it's been described as Magic the Gathering meets Yahtzee.

I can see that being the case. Probably a good call on your part at the end of the day. We have both at my house so no worries there :)

Yeah, the one time only thing is our biggest gripe, too, but at least Unlock! lets you pass the game on to other people (or sell it). Exit has components that may get marked up, torn, or manipulated in some way that makes it almost impossible to pass on to others (unless you're really good about using alternate ways to figure out the puzzle solution), but it was also nice to be able to have tangible puzzles to work with.

I try to avoid paying full price for the games if I can, but I try to remind myself that it's still cheaper than buying movie tickets for 4 people  ;)

I think I'd heard of the name Dice Throne before but didn't realize what it actually was. Too bad I missed out on the Kickstarters - it all looks pretty great, and I'm sad I missed out on a copy of season 1 with the swirly dice!

I may have to go through this thread and seriously look into the suggestions here.  I have gotten into it since it's something that the whole family can join in on and honestly my drive for video games has been very weak of late.  I still love to play them but have no real want to buy them.

Yeah sometimes it's nice to just step away from a screen for a while. The collector's mentality has been slipping for me as well.

As a suggestion for the thread, I picked up Azul not too long ago and it's a pretty fun quick game. I'd recommend it for anyone not looking for something complicated.

Neat! The visuals for it are really interesting and unique.

I tried out Forbidden Desert with my friends over the weekend (none of us had tried it before then), and we really enjoyed it. We totally got buried in sand and lost, but we felt like we learned a lot from that first playthrough. I liked the quality of all the pieces, too, and would definitely recommend!

That sounds like Forbidden Desert to me! I find we lose more often than win, but when you do win, it really feels earned.

Another game in that same vein is Pandemic. While there are tons of variants now, plus Pandemic Legacy (one of my favorite game experiences in a long time!), the base game is great. Hard won victories.

To the few who play board games here, perhaps someone can help me out.  I know this thread isn't for this type of thing but I need help finding an expansion to a game that we have.

My kids love to play Rail Raiders Infinite and I am looking for the The Good, The Bad, and The Bot expansion.  I know it's not a good game but they like it, so I'm trying to find the expansions to up the number of players.  I managed Old Tyme Religion so we have the fifth player just need the sixth.

Any help would be appreciated.

I can ask Scott, who used to be an admin here and is currently in the miniature scene. Maybe he'll have a lead. Is it fairly limited because it was limited to Kickstarter release?

For other co-op games out there, you might want to look up Flash Point: Fire Rescue, Dead Men Tell No Tales, 5-Minute Dungeon, and Zombicide.

Flash Point has you take on the roles of a crew of firefighters trying to rescue people in a burning building before it collapses. How characters move around and such is similar to the Forbidden games, but requires quite a bit more coordination between players. Dead Men Tell No Tales is of a similar vein, but in this one, you're pirates raiding a cursed ship for treasure.

5-Minuute Dungeon's a pretty quick co-op game. As the title suggests, rounds only take 5 minutes to play. How it works is that players have to quickly play cards to defeat a deck of monsters, but as everyone's playing at the same time and the clock is ticking, they have to communicate well enough that they don't waste too many cards and lose the game.

Zombicide (and its various spinoffs and expansions) is the most expensive one out of the list, but it's also got the most replayability. It's a zombie survival RPG where players play as a team of survivors, trying to complete various objectives while also dealing with the ever-growing zombie horde. As everything's modular and scenario-based, there are tons of different setups and levels of difficulties to try out, especially with the expansions added to the mix.

Also, if you get tired of pure co-op, there are some great semi-co-op games out there like Saboteur or Total Rickall, where while the game itself is a co-op one, 1 or more players may be a traitor with completely different goals in mind.

We played Rail Raiders Infinite on Memorial Day with 4 players and had a riot. It is a pretty light game and the rules could have been clearer, but I def think that it's better with more players cutting each other's throats. After that game, I wanted to try it at 6 players.

Anyway, I wouldn't be surprised that you can't find it right now, because it's either not released to the public yet or awaiting a reprint of some sort. I'm guessing the latter. I found a post from Ninja Division on Twitter saying the release date for RRI:G,B,B hasn't been announced yet. Perhaps with Origins and GenCon looming, we might see new RRI retail releases.

Ninja Division's original Kickstarter release was missing the extra dice that it was supposed to come with and there was a big to do about it. So I'm guessing the retail release got pushed back a bit to make sure it was all set for retail.

That said, I'm supposed to be working with ND and judging their chibi miniatures painting competition at GenCon. Poke me in the beginning of August, if you haven't found a copy yet and I'll ask them while I'm there.

5 Minute Dungeon is pretty fun but brutal as hell. Communication and teamwork is a must. We've so far only been able to beat the first 3 bosses due to time and luck of the draw (both our own decks and the door deck)

They just did an expansion on Kickstarter too which adds some new classes and mechanics. Can't wait to try that out.

Your mention of Zombicide reminded me of Dead of Winter. A pretty fun co-op game, but with a twist that one of your members could potentially be a betrayer. Make it interesting having to second guess everyone's moves.

I've been deep into board games over the last few years, and seem to play them more than I play video games. Also, I Kickstarted Rail Raiders: Infinite and work with Ninja Division as a painting competition judge at GenCon.

I got a hold of them through their facebook.  It was a weird conversation, but I have it ordered through SodaPopMinatures at the moment.  Apparently it's supposed to be available on SPMs' site, but it's not up yet.  So I'm guessing a release issue.

In other news who here plays LCGs?  I am a fan of Android: Netrunner but just found out WotC revoked the licence from FFG.  Really bummed about that since I haven't been on board with WotC lately.  At least I didn't have to worry about FFGs card quality.   :-\

Anyone try this game out from their first time around?

I might jump on it anyway. Seems like a good value for what they're asking, and it's been very successful. What I'm curious about is the replayability of the "chapters."
