Title: Let's Build a List! Majesco Re-Releases.
Post by: scott on September 08, 2011, 01:46:38 pm
@andrew brought up the fact that Majesco has been notorious for their re-release versions of 16 bit era games. So in an effort to get them listed properly on the website, lets build a list of them.

Since I only just learned of Majesco's releases, I'm not certain about games other than the SNES re-releases which have:

My copies of Super Empire Strikes Back and Super Return of the Jedi have the molded label on the back.  I got them both used, so no idea about the manuals though.

Oh, and I just noticed that the cartridge scan for Castlevania IV is of the re-release.  We may want to get that switched around, as to not throw people off.

Looks like there was a JVC release of Super Return of the Jedi too. Does it say JVC on your label at all?

I have a newly opened (i.e., a previously sealed) JVC Super Empire Strikes Back. It does not have a molded label. I have seen elsewhere for these two Star Wars games that THQ = Majesco, but I don't know much about it.

Also, we should add the Sega Game Gear, Genesis games, and Game Gear games to the list. There is info on the Game Gear wikipedia page about the differences in the Majesco remake. Maybe you can make a note on the list if the game is added to our database.

Get ready for a long post...

If you don't mind me linking to other forums, here are too similar discussions:

http://www.digitpress.com/forum/showthread.php?t=88084

http://www.rfgeneration.com/forum/index.php?topic=10046.0 .

In the first link they are also trying to make a list of some other label variants. The more I research, the deeper it gets, and the more impossible it seems.

I have 100% complete Majesco re-releases of Clay Fighter (SNES) and Frogger (Genesis). Clay Fighter has the characteristics listed above. (You should change "Manufactured in Mexico" to "Assembled in Mexico." This is listed on both the front and back labels.) The Genesis Frogger has a cardboard box, a black-and-white manual, and "Majesco Sales, Inc." listed on the front of the cart and the back and front of the manual and box. Also, the cart is Assembled in Mexico. In both cases, the plastic feels less durable and the front labels seem cheaper (maybe not glossy).

I don't think they're Majesco, but my Mortal Kombat 3 (SNES) and Donkey Kong Country 3 (SNES) are both Made in Mexico (not Assembled in Mexico) and have slightly different back sticker labels. I know there are other versions of these carts that are Made in Japan with, I'm assuming, the normal back labels. If we want to be complete, then more research will have to be done to figure out all of the differences.

Finally, I have Aladdin (SNES). This has every Majesco characteristic that I listed for Clay Fighter, but it has an actual label on the back of the cart. The label is different in color than a normal label, says Assembled in Mexico, and has either a VERY lightly stamped number, or no stamped number. It's black-and-white manual has "distributed by Majesco" on the back with their address. This was bought when I was younger, and I'm confident this cart and manual go together.

Now, I will compare all of my back labels again and see if I find any more differences.

I just got a complete copy of Super Castlevania IV, I can totally tell a difference between the labels and the cart's plastic is a different shade of gray.

Also, I think I meant to put assembled, but I wrote that from work and couldn't remember exactly what it said. ha

I'll scan my new cart and update this right now.

That was a fast turn around from identifying that you had the re-release to receiving this! As I'm reading through the forum, I'm gathering that you are a Castlevania fan, just a hunch! Someday I need to play these games.

1) You should add the details I listed for the Frogger game at the top under your description for the SNES re-releases. I believe this is a standard description for the Genesis Majesco re-releases, but it can certainly be altered otherwise.

2) Add the Sega Game Gear console under the list, and the differences in the Majesco re-release at the top. The differences are listed at the bottom of the "Sega Game Gear" Wikipedia page. Having all of this info. at the top will help everyone identify these items in their collections.

3) Don't forget to put a mark next to an item on the above list if it's in the vgcollect.com database.

4) Although it's not needed right now, we might need a category for games that we suspect are Majesco, but haven't confirmed yet.

5) How do you feel about adding and/or listing games with label variations that are shown in the above link and the "Made in Japan" vs. "Made in Mexico" variations that I just discovered for myself?

6) I'm still confused about SNES Star Wars. THQ did re-release Super Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back and Super Star Wars: The Return of the Jedi, both of which were originally released by JVC. Beyond that I don't know anything else, and I'm not sure what THQ releases looked like.

7) Last, add Aladdin to the SNES list. It's for sure a Majesco re-release because of the manual, but it's strange that it has an actual sticker label. Maybe make a note about the sticker.

8) Just kidding. There's one more. Zelda Oracle of Ages and Seasons was Developed by Flagship Co. not Flagship Studios. Flagship Co. is a subsidiary of Capcom. Flagship Studios is now dissolved. These two entries in our database need updated with this small change.

9) Time for bed.

I believe I read somewhere that they could be in cardboard or clamshell boxes.... hmm

Added Game Gear and the Genesis 3

done.

Well Majesco games should be listed as (Majesco Re-Release) If they weren't made by Majesco, and there are label variations then, ya they should be listed. Like how Super Mario Bros. 3, or all the Atari games have label variations.

I read somewhere that THQ releases were like Majesco releases, or actually the same thing. All I know is where I was reading they had them listed as THQ=Majesco.

7) Last, add Aladdin to the SNES list. It's for sure a Majesco re-release because of the manual, but it's strange that it has an actual sticker label. Maybe make a note about the sticker.

done

Yeah, the only other non-original release I have is my Greatest Hits version of Symphony of the Night. I need to fix that soon, it's always bothered me.

I would make it clear on the top that the Gamer Gear console was re-released by Majesco, whereas they were the sole manufacturer of the Genesis 3. Also, I just discovered that Majesco re-released the Genesis 2.

Depending on how much time you want to invest in on this topic, I think you should have info. (or just an appropriate link) on how to identify the re-released items at the very top and the list just under them.

Man, now I have to go home and double check my copy of Bloodlines. I'm nearly 100% positive that it's an original release though.

@scott Good thing you didn't discover another re-release in your collection!

Along with the Genesis 3 console release, Majesco also redesigned and re-released the 6 Button Arcade Pad. This was included in the release of the Genesis 3 as well as separately released. Here is the entry: http://vgcollect.com/item/16340 .

I'm not 100% sure, but I can't find any indication that Frogger (Genesis) is a re-release. I had this game sealed, and I opened it. It is certainly manufactured by Majesco, but possibly not re-released.

Luckily, the Bloodlines Re-Release is in a cardboard box with a black and white manual, rather than the plastic clamshell and full color manual. Crisis Averted.

I've got a Top Gear SNES that meets this criteria, I will try to get a picture. Also, I've got a Mega Man X Majesco rerelease with a paper label on the back instead of the plastic molding, will get a pic of that too.

My copy of Toy Story for the Genesis is a Majesco release. They got a little bit of solder on two of the pins, but the game works fine. I'd post the images to the forum but the Insert Image function doesn't seem to be working for me.

My copy of Goof Troop (SNES) is a Majesco copy. I'm pretty sure all of the Disney/ Capcom games on SNES had Majesco releases.
