Title: PSP??
Post by: 90snostalga on October 25, 2013, 09:44:25 pm
This may sound crazy, but I have never played a PSP, or even honestly, know much about it until a few months ago.  I don't think I know a single person who has one or that has even talked about one.  Would anyone suggest me getting a PSP and if so, what games?

The PSP is actually a really nice little handheld. At first glance the library seems kinda 'meh' but there are tons of hidden gems in there. But the battery life is kinda weak and if it sits unused for awhile you'll find it's battery dead just from sitting there. Also if you do get a PSP I highly recommend the 2nd model.

The Patapon games are really good. And there is a pretty good wealth of RPGs on there too. And if you're into Castlevania, you need to pick up Dracula X Chronicles.

Has a massive modding community as well. Type in PSP Homebrew in Google and see what comes up for yourself :-)

Also (some) of the PSP's allow you to output its video to a TV screen...A Big + in my book.

Like Scott said there are some great hidden RPGs....  Trails in the Sky, Legend of Heroes, Persona, etc....  A JRPG fan must have one....

also if you downgrade the software it makes a great little emulator for the classics on the go.

It's high on my wishlist as well. Especially since the games are going for dirt cheap right now. Good time to get on that collecting train. But unfortunately, the hardware still seems a bit pricey for it's age considering the PS Vita has been out a while, now.

Yea I was looking at the psp's on ebay and see that they are heavily priced.  I would have to save up for one.

I can play it on my actually television!  That's  a game winner for me!  Just got to save for one.  I'm still trying to find a gameboy play disc for my game boy player.  Finding one of those is like 1 in a million

It's an absolutely amazing handheld... IF you like Japanese RPGs and strategy RPGs. The thumbstick can be kind of irritating sometimes, but beyond that, it's a solid, comfortable piece of hardware with a pretty nice screen.

Having said that, the Vita is vastly superior in every way, so if you're not married to the idea of buying physical releases (many of which are getting $$$), the games will look considerably better on its OLED screen and be a little bit more comfortable to play.

Don't most Vita games also get physical releases, Erik?

Also (as you know) - I'm a *VERY* new member to the "Vita-Owner's Club" - Do you know/can you tell me anything about this "Vita TV"?

I believe he means that using a Vita means having to buy PSP games digitally, and forgoing physical releases. But who would want to do that?  :P

One of my main reasons for sticking with PSP. Sony has yet to demonstrate an acceptable migration system for PSP owners. Its simple really, if they create one that utilizes the Sony IDs. Why purchase it again with nothing additional to gain?

There is also a lot of great classic shoot em up compilations on it too. Parodius, Gradius and Salamander just to name a few. They can get kind of pricey since they were Japanese exclusives but still awesome.
I think it's a neat handheld unfortunately mine doesn't get used too often as I generally don't collect a lot for handhelds and I'm not the biggest RPG fan either.

For me, the psp is better handle than the ds (is my likes). There a bunch of tittles, specially on jrpg games. Also you can easly mod it and play emulators (nes, snes, sega genesis, ps1, etc) and also play backups games from the memory stick, but its better to have the game because you are giving the real love for gaming. For me this are the best games that I real enjoyed play them:

Rpg games:
Brave Story (the best one)
Final Fantasy 7 Crisis Core
Final Fantasy 1, 2, 3, 4 and Tactics
Final Fantasy Dissidia 1 and 2
Hexzy Force
Crimsom Gem Saga
Tales of Eternia
Valkery Profile
Star Ocean 1 and 2
Y's series
Jeanne D'Arc
Kingdom Hearts
Monster Hunter (I think there are 3 games)

Powe Stone
Ghost and golbins
Naruto (all the releases are good)
Dragon Ball Z: Shin Budokai Another Road
Dante Inferno
God of War (both)
All Metal Gear games (i think are 5) except metal gear acid 1 and 2

Yep, exactly. I really do wish there were a means of playing UMDs on the Vita, even if it meant slaving the PSP to it, but alas, no such luck :/

Still, even on its own, the PSP is really an underrated handheld. I always hear how there are no games for it, but that really only applies to Western-developed stuff... but I'd be hard-pressed to think of any handheld that really has a substantial number of those games, apart from disposable side games meant to squeeze a little more blood from certain franchises.

Hmmm....  Makes me want to experiment with a hardware mod....

Don't forget about Gungnir, Ragnarok Tactics, Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky, Yggdra Union, Growlanser: Wayfarer of Time, Persona, Persona 2: Innocent Sin, Tactics Ogre, Ys Seven and Oath in Felghana, and on and on... so much good stuff!

Trails in the Sky is one that I am specifically wanting still....  Most others I have already (though I'd like to get some of the premium editions too), but Trails in the Sky has eluded me thus far....

Ragnarok Tactics is pretty good. But man the tutorial level seemed to drag on forever.

The PSP is a goldmine for SRPGs.

Speaking of SRPGs, I'm still pissed that Sega didn't release Valkyria Chronicles III here. There's a translation in progress, but as always, it's up in the air whether it'll actually be completed until it's actually completed. Argh, Segaaaaaa!

I'm just going to go ahead and be pissed about both....  It is such a beautiful series that it deserves home console release, and the fact that Sega is neglecting the west with it also saddens me....  I flipped my shit when I first played it....  My mind was reeling with next gen possibilities when it first came out....  I've become fairly jaded lately but back then I was SO excited for the future of gaming....  /sigh

UGH, tell me about it. I strongly believe that had they kept the whole series on PS3, they'd have not only been more ambitious with VC2, but the series as a whole would've grown its audience rather than shrinking it. The first game was a slow burn, with critics and JRPG/SRPG die-hards picking up on it first, and it took upwards of a year and a few price cuts to really gain any kind of momentum. They had an adoring audience just waiting for it, and they flushed all that potential growth right down the toilet, likely killing the series for good once the third game was confirmed as JP-only.

As far as SRPGs go, Valkyria Chronicles and Front Mission will probably always stick in my mind as some of the most underappreciated.

Meanwhile, the Call of Duty gravy train rolls on... meh.
