Interesting list. Only one of those will make my list, some of the others would make a 0 on my list.

My 10/10 games are as follows :

Phantasy star
Super Mario III
Zelda: Link to the past
Super metroid
Final fantasy VII
Dragon quest VIII
Ni no Kuni

Galaxian
Pac-Man
Super Mario Bros 3
Sonic the Hedgehog 2
Super Mario World
Outrun
Streets of Rage 2
Zombies Ate My Neighbors
Link to the Past
Comix Zone
Pokemon
Links Awakening
NFL 2K
Crazy Taxi
Halo
Marvel Vs Capcom 2

Notable Ommisions are Phantasy Star and Shenmue. These are by far my favorite games. But Phantasy Star has horrible direction. There is a lot of stuff that seems impossible to figure out. If I was reviewing the game, I would have to give it a 9.9. Same with Shenmue. It's one of my favorites, but the voice acting alone will take you out of the universe. It's a notable flaw that could've and should've been fixes.

Compare this with crazy taxi. I don't like it as much as Phantasy Star, but it's design is close to perfection in my opinion. It's fun, looks great, sounds better. The only way I can think of to make Crazy Taxi better, is to have more levels. Essentially more Crazy Taxi.

That's my take of 10/10. They are not necessarily my favorite, but games I think are designed perfectly. Games that if I changed anything, would only make them worse.

Clearly there is a lot of Sega, but that's where most of my experience is. But I have to say, out of all of those, Mario 3 is the most deserving.

Which ones would be a 0 for you?

Super Mario Bros. 2 (NES)
Super Mario 64 (N54)
Sonic The Hedgehog (GEN)
SimCity (SNES)
Super Mario 64 (N64)
Ecco The Dolphin (GEN)
Guitar Hero III: Legends Of Rock (PS3, 360, Wii)
Final Fantasy X (PS2)

These games would get a 0. Before anyone is like "OMG WTF is wrong with you", these are my opinions. I find Sonic to be a horrible series. The whole point seems to be just to make it to one end of the screen to the other with no real purpose in between. Guitar hero games are just ugh. Mario 64 and SMB 2 shouldnt even have Mario's name on it cause its a blemish on the mostly flawless record of straight SMB games.Ecco is another one of those "move from one end to the other with no in between". Simcity I cant even stomach. FFX gets a 0 cause its the beginning of the downfall for the FF series. Im sure I would probably place a whole lot of the others on the 0 list but I dont know them.

I think Phantasy star gets a top nod cause of its direction. Its not as lost as Ghost Lion but its not as simple as Final fantasy 1 where it basically tells you "Go here next, talk to this next". It does every single thing that an 8 bit RPG should and then some.

I will have to agree with you on Mario 3 too. I dont think there is a single game that will appear on everyone's list but that one. It was the absolute high of gaming the world has ever seen. It will never be duplicated either. Its simply the greatest game ever created.

Personally, to me a 10/10 is as close to gaming perfection as you can get -so- it's easy for me...

...Shadow-Hearts: Covenant is/always shall be my *one* & only 10/10 game that's the "benchmark" by which all other games are measured against...and...fall short of  8)

It's hard to decide on 10/10 games rather than favourite ones. I like the challenge!

Let's see... I didn't think a lot about this, but let's say:

Animal Crossing: New Leaf
Arkanoid (NES)
Link's Awakening
Professor Layton and the Curious Village
Super Mario Bros 3
Super Mario 64
Tales of Symphonia
The World Ends With You

Banko-Kazooie almost made the list, but it didn't keep the music notes you found, and that was really frustrating when you died.

Mario 64 and SMB 2 shouldnt even have Mario's name on it cause its a blemish on the mostly flawless record of straight SMB games.

While I personally agree with SMB2, SM64 is my favourite Mario ever, so I fail to see where it's a blemish  :P It all comes down to personal preference, though.

Mario 64 is a somewhat polarizing game. Most people love it. I don't understand the love. I personally hate the game. I kinda like the penguin sliding stuff, but that's about it. I also hate the platformer genre it ushered in with the Mario 64 clones of Banjo Kazooie and Donkey Kong 64 to name a few.

I think most people's love of Mario 64 comes from nostalgia. In a similar manner, I like Sonic Adventure when most people don't. But my love comes from nostalgia and my familiarity with the universe. But it is certainly a flawed game.

This would probably be a different thread, but I honestly think, Mario and Sonic made a similar downward spiral in quality at about the same time. Mario started to suck with Yoshi's Island. Sonic started to suck with 3D Blast. For several generations, they have been shells of their 16-bit selves. They made the transition to 3D poorly. They both have started getting stuff right (Mario Galaxy/Sonic Colors). They've also gotten better recently since they both have started going back to 2D/classic design with moderate success (New Mario/Sonic Generations). The two mascots mirror each other a lot in my opinion. I actually don't think Sonic and Mario are that different, then or now.

In terms of SAT analogies: Mario 64 is to Mario as Sonic Adventure is to Sonic.

NES
Super Mario Bros
Super Mario Bros 3
Mega Man 2
Contra

SNES
Super Mario World
Super Metroid
Donkey Kong Country
Chrono Trigger
Earthbound
The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past

N64
Star Fox 64
Mario Kart 64
Star Wars: Rogue Squadron

Xbox
Star Wars: Battlefront
Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic

Xbox 360
Borderlands 2
Red Dead Redemption

Arcade
Ms. Pac-Man
Street Fighter II: Championship Edition

I'm sure I could add to this, but it'll do for now.
I tried to go by how good a game was multiplied by a factor of how good it still is. That was a lie. I just winged it.

Turf reminded me of a game that should have made my list : Mario kart 64. While I absolutely despise the 64 and everything it is, Mario kart 64 is an abomination in the fact that it is an amazing game. The SNES version brought the series to the world but Kart64 is everything it should have been. I actually think that the following games in the series still dont even compete with this version.

I don't think there's any game in existence I'd give a 10/10 to. Not that my standards are too high or anything, but even my favorite games are 9s at the very most. I haven't really played a game that I can truly call perfect.

Shenmue is a crazy good game. That and Phantasy Star are my two favorite games of all time. But Shenmue does have some flaws. Beyond the voice acting, the controls are horrible. It's still my favorite game but it is flawed.

Per Phantasy Star, I know before I was so excited about it, but after getting to the final boss, I just realized I did not like the game.  No direction, too easy to get lost in the dungeons which led to my frustration, and not enough health to beat the final bosses in a reasonable fashion.  I like the game from an idea standpoint for it's time, awesome color and graphics but nothing about it makes me die to play Phantasy Star 2 ya' know?  I only want to play phantasy star 2 because  alot of people talk about it but after playing the first, It's like it ruined it for me I guess.

Per Shenmue, I just loved that game!  The first free world type of game, great graphics and story line, It's better than sex lol  ;D  Just upset there is no Shenmue 3  :-[

Not taking this too seriously (as in, I'm not listing these on any sort of proper objective scale) -

NiGHTS into Dreams
Phantasy Star Online: Blue Burst (only specifying BB because each successive version adds more to an already brilliant game)
Puyu Puyo Tsuu
Puzzle Bobble 2X
Mushihimesama Futari
Rod Land
Kiseki series
Sakura Taisen 1 and 3
Boku no Natsuyasumi series
Fantasia Sango series
Gu Jian Qi Tan series

I don't get all the love for Nights.

It's a very pretty game, but beyond that, there's not much there, IMO. You fly around in a gigantic circle, collect orbs, and do loopdy-loops. It just seems very simplistic, and kind of pointless other than it being a showcase for what the Saturn was capable of graphically. Kind of like Sega's version of Pilotwings.

Shmups can be "beaten" by holding down the fire button and hitting continue when you die, but it's really all about the score - just like NiGHTS. :)

Yup, that's why I tend to never hit continue after I use my last credit. I get a larger feeling of accomplishment when am able to progress further thanks to forcing myself to do so.

There's a whole lot more strategy involved in shoot-em ups than just flying in a circle and doing loopdy-loops, though.

I feel like there is a distinction between 10/10 when the game is new, versus now.

Super Metroid I feel is still pretty incredible, even today.

Goldeneye I rented more than any other game, ever.  The single player campaign was awesome, and completely different depending on the difficulty, and the multiplayer, mein gott!   A 10/10 no doubt.

NOWADAYS, the bloom is off the rose: the controls are clumsy, the graphics are meh.  It's hard to still call it a 10/10

Kimimi: Puzzle Bobble is an awesome choice.  It's hard to find something wrong with that game.

That is it! I know it doesn't sound like much, but it is the most addicting game I've ever played. Im pretty sure it was done by the same group at Midway that did Tapper

It is. The information that I found on it even said that they used old Tapper cabinets for the game.

Hrmm just found out that this : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Midway_Arcade_Treasures_2 has the game on it!

I'm not one to necrobump, but this thread was linked by someone on another topic and I found it interesting, so...

Ico / Shadow of the Colossus
Kingdom Hearts II
Drakengard
God of War
Chrono Cross
Final Fantasy VII
Final Fantasy IX
Metal Gear Solid
Mega Man X
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Turtles in Time
Pokémon Crystal
Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins
Super Mario Galaxy
Metroid Fusion
Paper Mario
The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening (Game Boy)
The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (cliché, I know)
Grandia II
Rez

I didn’t want to make this a long list, but these are the games that come to mind that I would honestly say are, to me at least, 10/10. To me a game like that has to truly captivate and engross me with everything it has to offer: story, gameplay, music, its overall presentation, what have you. Aside from personal favorites, these are some of the games that I can say I spent countless hours playing or would come back to because they have everything I look and want a video game to have. I’m sure there are countless others that I could list here, but I have yet to play them. I know, for example, Raw Danger and Disaster Report for PS2 are two games that I will enjoy quite a lot once I finally sit down and play them. And I’m sure the same will happen with Ōkami.

I find Sonic to be a horrible series. The whole point seems to be just to make it to one end of the screen to the other with no real purpose in between.

Sonic fans be like...

Overall, I don't think many things in life as a whole deserve a 10/10...
When it comes to Video Games, I can only think of four examples (always taking into consideration the time when each of them were released):
- Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistance
- Castlevania: Symphony of the Night
- The King of Fighters '98: Dream Match Never Ends

- Super Mario Bros. 3 (which means a lot coming from a confessed Nintendo hater!)

Ooooh,  The coveted 10 out of 10.  I reserve that number for the pinnacles of gaming greatness.  And this post is actually pretty hard because I can only rate games i have immense experience with and also leave personal bias aside.  Which is hard to do both since most games i've played enough to judge are games I love.   But here is my list :)   I will do my best to not let person love or nostalgia effect these.

Super Mario World

If I was forced to give one sole 10/10 to only one game in the gaming industry.  It would be Super Mario World.  Super Mario World, I feel embodies every single aspect of gaming culture.  It is the peak.  It's not my personal favorite game.  But I can't think of any game that deserves the moniker of perfection more. It's like Gaming Cultures theme song.  Everything from the colorful visuals, to the orchestral masterpiece that is the soundtrack.   It has the perfect formula of easy enough for a literal baby to play and laugh and enjoy, but complicated enough for the most hardcore gamers and 40 year olds to play and truly just enjoy it, start till end.

The mini boss to main boss ratio,  was unheard of at the time.  It was just expertly done.  Level progression flawless.  The variety of levels and what they did with Mario's powers.   I don't think a Mario Side Scroller has or will ever pass it.   Super Mario World is a game that can be beaten 300 times and still be enjoyed the 301st.   It's just never ending nostalgia.

Grand Theft Auto V

Grand Theft Auto 5 as a stand alone game, is already pretty concrete.  But then you add in it's ridiculously fun and immersive online.  Which has still attracted one of the largest online player bases even half a decade later.  It's just 10/10 imo.   And again, a lot of bias comes into play because I love all Grand Theft Autos.   But GTA 5 is open world gold.   The scope of the side missions in this game are larger than some entire games.   The plot was deep, thick and they did something that you rarely see in gaming by dividing it among 3 protagonists at once.  And they did it seemlessly.   I just think GTA 5 was Rockstar showing off.   Just completely miles ahead of the sandbox open world genre.   It's almost 3 games at once, with an online mode on top of it.   Customizing,  the world.    RDR2 may have gotten more carried away with details,  but I think GTA 5 was slightly better plot wise and was faster paced.

GTA 5 is a staple.

Legend of Zelda BOTW

BOTW was an amazing turn around for Nintendo after Wii U failed.  It was like the hail mary and it succeeded.  Miyamoto proving again why he's a gaming genius.   I think the main overlooked thing with BOTW is the orchestral cinematic soundtrack.  It's gorgeous.  It plays gorgeous.  Sounds gorgeous.   It utilized every bit of the Switch technology.    The bosses are extremely memorable.   The combat system is unique and ingenious.    BOTW does hundreds of things right.    Even things people didn't like, like the weapons breaking.  I believe was a good thing for the franchise.  I like the realism.   I like how you gotta bundle up or eat certain foods to traverse the cold and have to scavenge for weapons if you break them.   It makes it probably the most immersive Zelda of all time.

Minecraft

Minecraft is a 10/10 because it follows the simple science of gaming that Super Mario World followed, maybe to a slightly lesser extent.   But it is simple enough for a baby to play.  Complex enough that adults can have extreme challenge with it.   It is colorful, beautiful, simple and it's incredibly replayable, relaxing and you'll find yourself going back to it.  Probably until the end of time.   Once you get it, you get it type of game.   I always thought I hated it.  Until you love it.  Then you love it love it lol.    Minecraft is just that game.   It's one of the best selling games of all time for this reason.  I know people who own it on like 7 consoles.  You just have to.   When you see it in the E shop of your new console,  you buy it.   No collection is complete without it.  And I highly reccomend people to try it and get carried away with endless imagination :)

Tetris

Again, imo the iconic formula.   Simple yet complex.  Easy to learn, hard to master.  Amazing music.   If you combine those factors with fluid and concrete gameplay.  It will be a 10/10.    Tetris is the most iconic puzzle game of all time.   Tetris is so out of the box fun.   Has been since it's inception.   And after over 30 years.   People will still be loading up Tetris.   Tetris is still prominent on almost every major console.  And the story behind it is even more interesting than the game itself.    Tetris tournaments,  tetris masters.   It's almost like a Chess of the gaming world.  It's gaming royalty.

Pokemon Red/Blue/Yellow

It's pokemon.   I wish I could give a thought out reason for it being a 10 imo.  But it's Pokemon.  It speaks for itself.

I don't think i'd give any more games the glorious 10/10 award.   Their are dozens i'd personally give it to like Red Dead,  Call of Duty WW2,  NFL Street 2,  MVP Baseball 2005,  Need For Speed Most Wanted (Original) and games like Ratchet and Clank Up Your Arsonal.    But I know those are personal favorites.   And not coveted masterpieces that changed the cultivation of gaming forever.  :D

For me, I'd have to say Persona 3 and Fire Emblem: Genealogy of the Holy War.
While P3 was not my first megaten game (That distinction belongs to P1), it was a game I binge-played which is something I almost never do. I fell in love with the story, atmosphere, music and characters (most of them anyway). I have played it several times and each time was a blast. The game really resonated with me. Shout-out to the Japanese cover of vanilla P3 which is my favorite P3 cover.
For FE4, this is one game that I had known of for most of my life but hadn't actually played it until more recently. My brother really liked it and he told me all sorts of things about it, including some big plot twists. In his defense he never thought I'd play it and I didn't think I would either. There was an adjustment because I was used to the GBA FEs at that point and FE4 is much older so it's only natural that it plays differently. The music is some of Yuka Tsujiyoko's best and dare I say among the best in the series. I really love the story and characters too. I've played this game all the way through several times as well and each playthrough is a brand new adventure of excitement and frustration.

It's very hard for me to think of a 10/10 game.  Like I don't know if I would consider any of my favorite games 10/10, because it's not about whether the game is perfect, it's about how much I enjoy the game.  Brutal Legend is a top 10 game of all time for me, but that's absolutely a 7/10 quality experience, but it appeals to me so specifically, that I love it.  Breath of the Wild is one of my favorite Zelda games, but I have issues with it and would never consider it a 10/10 game.

I can only think of a couple older retro games that would fit into that 10/10 realm I think, because at the time, they were kinda the pinnacle of what they were and still hold up just as well now as they did back then.

Super Mario World
A Link to the Past
Mega Man X

I could maybe add a couple more, but to me the SNES era kinda perfected those series that came out of the NES era.  I might come back to this later as I might also add Banjo-Kazooie and maybe one or two others.

Also to note, those 3 top 10 games I listed, I wouldn't count as my personal top 10 games of all time lol This kind of stuff gets abit complicated for me.

Yeah, I think for a game to be 10/10 it has to be absolutely flawless, and I don't think there's a single game in my top ten that hits that. No game has been a completely perfect experience for me.

You know, I get what some of you say with there not being a perfect, flawless game out there. Sure, opinions vary, but I can agree with that sentiment given the context. Still, I believe you could give yourself some credit and make a list based on criteria of what to YOU a 10/10 game is. Drakengard is by no means a perfect game, but it has some of the qualities that to ME make it a 10/10 game: story, gameplay, design, music. This game wasn't that well received, and many even ridiculed it and lambasted it for its rather taboo themes, but it ended up gaining a cult following, not to mention sequels and spin-offs.

What I'm trying to say is don't take the 10/10 literally; throw the notion that there isn't a 10/10 game and think outside the box.

Just my two coins, of course.

I don't view 10/10 as "perfect" myself, because there's nothing that is perfect or flawless.  Even the best possible games of all time have flaws.  To me, it's just about all around quality, entertainment, gameplay, and how it mixes together.  Like the original Zelda on NES is a Top 10 game, but I wouldn't consider it a 10/10, while A Link to the Past is a 10/10, but not on my Top list.

To me, a 10/10 is just that every part of the game is home run, even if it has some tiny issues here or there.  Because of that, I'm more critical about a game, than I would be if I just loved the heck out of it and placed it in my Top 10 list.  My Top 10 is just about pure emotional love for a game.

A 10/10 is a very, very rare thing I'd give a game, but there are certainly 3 that meet that criteria:

Shenmue
Shenmue II
The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild

That is literally it. I've played some outstanding games, but these are literally the only 3 that I'd consider perfect.

The game that always comes to mind is Silent Hill 2, I really feel that game perfected the genre. Much like how Psycho is legendary within the Film industry I will always view Silent Hill 2 in the same way for delivering a really immersive experience. The symbology put into the art direction, the pitch perfect sound design and the messages behind James journey into the town is just beyond anything I have experienced within other games. There are many games I like, but I sincerely consider Silent Hill 2 a masterpiece... which makes the PS3/360 Botch job all the more painful!

On another forum, I hold a Rate The Game topic where users score a game 1 through 10. The description for 10/10 on there is, "Incredible, one of the very best I've ever played."

So, these are the games that fulfill that criteria.

SaGa Frontier
Spirit Hunter: NG
Valkyrie Profile
Mega Man X4
Legaia 2: Duel Saga
Final Fantasy Tactics

This is exactly the problem I have when considering a 10/10; very few games in my personal top 10 meet that standard, and some NOT in my personal top 10 do.

Here’s some of the VERY few I can think of:
Shadow of the Colossus
Mega Man 2
The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past
Super Metroid
Final Fantasy VI
Bioshock Infinite (some may disagree with this one, but it’s the perfect game to me, when taking all aspects into account)
Shinobi 3 (the ultimate platform action game, with just the right amount of difficulty)

There’s a few legendary games I would not give a 10/10 due to minor flaws...
Castlevania SOTN? Too many useless items/weapons, and too easy
Turtles in Time? I was always disappointed by the animation of the SNES game...could have been a LOT better. The animation in Hyperstone Heist blows away TMNT IV.
Skyrim? Too many bugs

A 10/10 game. Is there such a thing?  I think I might name a few that are perfect.

Super Mario World
Super Mario Bros 3
Super Metroid
Legend of Zelda: Link to the Past
Legend of Zelda: Link Between Worlds
Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic
Red Dead Redemption
Grand Theft Auto V

I know it’s Nintendo heavy, but I think they make the best games.

Super Castlevania IV
Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past
Chrono Trigger
Metal Gear Solid
Soul Calibur
Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas
F-Zero GX
Metroid Prime
Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic
Ninja Gaiden (Xbox)
Red Dead Redemption
Enter the Gungeon
Sine Mora EX
Under Night In-Birth: EXE [late] st

That’s it. That’s the list, but if you wanted it could be further condensed into just the following:

Chrono Trigger

I have a loose standard I suppose. A 10/10 for me is just a game I thoroughly enjoy from start to finish, despite potential flaws. The kind of game I don't want to put down and the kind I can't wait to pick back up. This year they were the following:

Astral Chain
Resident Evil 4
Luigi's Mansion 1 & 3

Last year had some winners too:

Okami
GRIS
Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate/World
Metroid Prime II: Echoes
Final Fantasy IV

I probably had lots more 6-9's, and I generally don't bother with 5>.

Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic

God, I really, really need to replay this game and the second one again. I love them both, but haven't played 2 since when it first came out; I beat the first again about a decade ago and it's still a very solid game.

The second one starts off strong, but gets really rushed towards the end. The first one is a damn masterpiece though. I love it.
