Title: Skylanders... or what the hell have I gotten myself into.
Post by: justin8301 on December 10, 2013, 09:57:04 pm
So with all the awesome holiday deals going on I managed to snag a copy of Skylanders: Spyro's Adventure Starter Pack for $19 and Skylanders Giants Portal Owners Pack for $18; both for PS3. Before this I really had no interest in the franchise and haven't been following it that much. I understand the game is played by placing the figures on the portal and that the characters stats are stored directly on the figure's NFC chip but not much more. I have so many questions and I'm not sure where to start; like is the game worth playing? are the figures compatible with the different versions? Do I need to buy more figures to really get the best experience. Its all kinda overwhelming so I just wanted to see what our community thinks about this interesting game. Thanks guys (and ladies)!!!

I seem to be one of the resident Skylander people on the forums (pretty sure 90% of the figures have been uploaded by me). Here goes

is the game worth playing? Yes. Its a decent game even if the targeted audience is around 10 years old. Only complaint Ive had is the shortness of the game and the replay of each level after you get all the stars is low.
are the figures compatible with the different versions? The figures are compatible forward 100% but not backwards at all.
Do I need to buy more figures to really get the best experience? For each game, you need a certain minimum to enjoy all the game has to offer. Spyro's - one of each of the 8 elements, Giants - Previous plus at least 1 giant, Swap force - Previous plus one of each of the 8 additional bonus swappable characters. The bonuses include sneaking, climbing, speed, etc.

If you have any other questions, let me know.

Do you know of any good places to get some cheap figures? I'm not a big fan of paying full price for anything.  :)

Used game stores have tons of figures. We've bought a ton of these things for The Boy.  That's a good place to start looking.
As for the game, it's fun. It's not going to change your life, unless you're a little boy. My son loves it. He likes to get a new character for no reason when we get groceries. $10 isn't that big of a deal.  I think the most fun for kids is leveling up a new character and seeing the new abilities.
Have fun. It's a neat idea and kids love it.

Can you delete the data on a figure if you buy it used?

You bet. You can start any of them fresh. You can also change ownership of them. That way they show up in your collection on the game.

For that price, it was definitely a great buy! The game has low replayability as Soera pointed out, but you can extand it a little if you want to complete all of the trophies/achievements, like I did. It adds a little more challenge!

I currently almost have the spyro adventure collection and was about to move on to collecting the giants. Do I need to buy the giants portal of power or can I use the same portal I currently have? Is this the case with swaping one?
Title: Re: Skylanders... or what the hell have I gotten myself into.

If you plan to also get Swap force, do not bother buying a new portal. A new one is required for Swap force. If you are not going to bother with it, then you will not need a new portal from Spyro's to Giants.

Not to threadjack, but has anyone played Disney Infinity?  Is it the same kind of thing?

It is kind of the same thing but from what I know it has micro transactions.

It does? Ugh, and it's already pricier...I don't think I'll be getting it then, except if I find someone in a few years who's desperate to get rid of everything and happens to sell it for very cheap  :P

They figure with the known characters instead of made up characters like Skylanders, they would sell fast. But kids just want to have fun and parents want to do it as cheap as possible. :)

Another point that I dislike about Infinity is that characters cannot be played outside of their own world... I don't know if most parents get informed before buying such a pricey game, but it's probably something that would put them off too. My bet is that Skylanders will stay, while I'm still unsure about Infinity's future.

Here's another question about skylanders. Whats the deal with all the legionaries and other variants. Do they effect gameplay, or is it just a cosmetic thing?

Legendaries are Toys R Us only exclusives and they are absolutely different characters. Most variants are not different on game. Im going to post up a list following this thread.

Dammit, Dammit, Dammit.  I've let myself get caught up in the mania of Skylanders.  Swap Force is actually a pretty fun game.  It's harder than the other two, but it's more fun.  I think I'm enjoying it more than my son.  I'm looking for new characters and calling GameStop seeing what's in stock.  How did I let this happen?

Lol, I still haven't bought any new figures. Actually I haven't even opened the starter packs yet. I think I'll wait till the fad has passed and everyone is trying to unload them before I buy any.

Yeah he is a totally different character in game unlike the Halloween Eyebrawl.

Yeah, we got bit by the Pumpkin Eyebrawl. What a disappointment.
I like the World Cup looking Countdown. He's a bomb colored like a soccer ball. That's kind of awesome.

My guess is that character isnt going to be a stateside character but more of a EU option so if you have friends on that side of the world, you may have to hit them up.

I've been told by a few people, the most recent being a game shop owner this morning, that Skylanders is VERY addictive and that people that are getting hooked on these toys/games are spending a ton of money trying to buy all these things.

It sounds like the owner is about 2 years behind. When the first Skylanders game came out it was almost impossible to find figures for months and they never went on sale. Last year with Giants they were fairly easy to find and there were a few sales. This year Swapforce was on sale about a month after release and the figures are regularly going on sale and you can find pretty much whatever you want with very little trouble.

I have just recently picked up Swapforce and I have yet to open it. I did enjoy the first two games but I am going to wait to open it until I pick up more figures for the magical $5 price point :D

I've been wondering whether I'm setting the bar too high when buying the figurines. I really want the damn card and sticker that they come with, but I've never seen any used one that had them, so I always buy them brand new. And here in Quebec, the best deal I've seen is $8 for normal skylanders, or $12 for a giant, so it's not cheap to collect them in here  :-\ At least not when buying them new. I've seen a few used for $5, but like I said, they don't have the card and sticker and I want them.

It's really not that hard to end up with all the skylanders.  It's not too expensive if you do it a little at a time.  If you just buy one every other week, you always have a new character and you don't really notice you have $500 tied up in a kids game.

I'm just going by what I've been told, since he sells them I happened to ask. I have absolutely no interest in them. It does remind me of the whole pokemon "gotta get them all" thing

I'm going to dig up this old thread because I want to talk about Skylanders. I know it's a kids game, but I'll be damned if I didn't get into it. I haven't bought any for me yet, but it's not hard for the boy to talk me into a new one.

Which one is your favorite?

Right now my favorite is either Stink Bomb or Night Shift.

When it was just Spyro's adventure, I loved me some Camo. I maxed him out pretty quickly. Then giants came out and they didnt release a series 2 for Camo so I ended up not messing with him anymore. Well, on Black Friday of 2012 was the release date of Legendary Stealth elf. I already liked her as a character but Legendary + series 2 = win. Played the hell out of her. Maxed her out with all skills, all heroic challenges, and the gold trophy hat. I ended up wasting too much time on the game honestly so when Swap force came out, I told myself I wouldnt play ... but Ill be damned if Dune bug isnt a cool looking character. If I play, thats the one Ill probably end up using!

Heh I left out why I mentioned Legendary Stealth elf's release date. Cause my son found out about her so we stood outside of Toys R Us for 9 hours waiting to get her. I ended up getting sick from the weather out there but we got the character. I had to give her a chance cause of all the circumstances. :P

Swap Force is a 100x better game. I didn't really care for Giants and Spyros Adventure sucked on the Wii. I've been digging this one though. It takes more than a little patience to play co-op with a 4 year old. He does a metric shit ton of character swapping.
Title: Re: Skylanders... or what the hell have I gotten myself into.
Post by: soera on February 04, 2014, 07:15:28 am
Heh my son is 5 ... he is tough to play with co-op too. But its not the character swapping. Its the general selfishness. He wants every single coin that drops and gets pissed if he doesnt get it. If you play duel with him, he wins ... or gets pissed again. Lol.

That's another good thing about Swap Force. If you pick up a coin, both of you get the cash. I don't know if it works that way in Giants.
One thing I love about Swap Force is that I can cheat like a fool. That Sky Diamond trick saves a lot of time. I'd never unlock all moves if it want for easy cash.

Heh you share coins on Swap force? Yeah that would make playing with Logan better.

We have the sky diamond but I havent used it yet. What does it do?

Here's the cheat in a nutshell:
You go to the training dummies in the main town, Woodborrow I think. Then you put the sky diamond on and beat the shit out of the dummy as fast as you can. Just mash A over and over. You get 20 gold per hit. It adds up in a hurry. You can max a guy out in just a few minutes.
The guys with slow attacks take longer, but someone with little quick attacks can get 5000 gold in one go with the sky diamond.

So after telling myself I wasn't going to put any money into this game, I ended up picking up a few figures that seemed like deals... not sure how great of a deal but i figured what the hell.

First I grabbed the Skylanders Giants Silver Dragonfire Cannon Battle Pack for 9.99 from gamestop
http://www.gamestop.com/toys/skylanders-giants-silver-dragonfire-cannon-battle-pack/107639

and the I ordered Skylanders Giants: Giants - Scarlet Ninjini and Skylanders Giants - Pumpkin Eye Brawl for a combined 26.00 at Walmart

So I still haven't play the game but I figured I'd grab a few characters before I got started.... here goes nothing lol.

Pumpkin Eye Brawl was a disappointment. He doesn't show up any different in the game.  Just regular ole Eye Brawl.  Scarlet Ninjini was really hard to find at one time.  I think they've caught up on that though.  If you have a used game store around you, you can usually get these things on the cheap.

Most of them are different. The Legendary ones, Gnarly Tree Rex, and Scarlet Ninjini are all different in the game. Several more are different too. Actually, I think the list of the ones that are the same is shorter.
