Title: Poll: How do you pronounce NES
Post by: sin2beta on January 30, 2014, 06:35:14 pm
Do you say it as if it is a word? Much like one pronounces NASA. Do you say the letters? Much like one pronounces NRA. Or do you call it something different? Do you go super old school and just straight up call it the Nintendo?

Personally, I have always called it the "regular Nintendo". I started this as a kid. I got mine in 1993 (top-loader, boy!). So, there was the "super" Nintendo. I didn't have that. I had the "regular" Nintendo.

However, lately, I've been transitioning to saying it in the NASA acronym style. I often say "NEZZ". I blame the brits on youtube. (I've also caught myself saying "Atari Jag-you-are". It's embarrassing. )

EDIT: Also list where you lived at the time of the NES. I'm curious if this is based on Geography. Like soda vs pop. Arkansas for me.

At the time it was my "Nintendo". Then it was the "Regular Nintendo". Then I moved on to "The 8-bit'er". Now days, I flop between Nes (The Word) and N.E.S.

I'm born and raised in Arkansas.

I always have and still do spell it out.  Same for SNES.  It never occurred to me to say it as a word and I was flabbergasted by the frequency of that pronunciation on youtube.  I have become accustomed to hearing it that way now (same with shmup), but even though I am used to it, I don't intend to change.

Oh, Missouri.

SNES as a word makes me cringe. S. N. E. S. or Super Nintendo. I'll even settle for "Super".

Same for me.  I'm over in California.

I prefer just saying Nintendo or N.E.S.

I usually say "ness" or spell it N-E-S. But sometimes I catch myself saying "the Nintendo." Since that's what we mainly said back in the day. But when it comes to Super Nintendo I always spell it out S-N-E-S. I can't stand "sness." Why? I have no clue.

I believe I was living in West Virginia when we got the NES. That or North Carolina.

Good question.  I'm also seriously curious from watching Turfs game room pic video.  In the video, Turf said something in the nature of you blame the playstation for nintendo's down fall or something?  I'm really curious what you mean?  Like, for you and your friends or something?  I was just curious because thats the first I've heard negative of the playstation so i figured maybe there was something I didnt know that I could learn

Well, Turf is right honestly.

PlayStation was the brainchild of Ken Kutaragi, a Sony executive who had just come out of his hardware engineering division at that time and would later be dubbed as "The Father of the PlayStation".

The console's origins date back to 1988 where it was originally a joint project between Nintendo and Sony to create a CD-ROM for the Super Famicom. Although Nintendo denied the existence of the Sony deal as late as March 1991, Sony revealed a Super Famicom with a built-in CD-ROM drive (that incorporated Green Book technology or CDi) at the Consumer Electronics Show in June 1991. However, a day after the announcement at CES Nintendo announced that it would be breaking its partnership with Sony, opting to go with Philips instead but using the same technology. The deal was broken by Nintendo after they were unable to come to an agreement on how revenue would be split between the two companies. The breaking of the partnership infuriated Sony President Norio Ohga, who responded by appointing Kutaragi with the responsibility of developing of the PlayStation project to rival Nintendo.

At that time, negotiations were still on-going between Nintendo and Sony, with Nintendo offering Sony a "non-gaming role" regarding their new partnership with Philips. This proposal was swiftly rejected by Kutaragi who was facing increasing criticism over his work with regard to entering the video game industry from within Sony. Negotiations officially ended in May 1992 and in order to decide the fate of the PlayStation project, a meeting was held in June 1992, consisting of Sony President Ohga, PlayStation Head Kutaragi and several senior members of Sony's board. At the meeting, Kutaragi unveiled a proprietary CD-ROM-based system he had been working on which involved playing video games with 3D graphics to the board. Eventually, Sony President Ohga decided to retain the project after being reminded by Kutaragi of the humiliation he suffered from Nintendo.

Nevertheless, due to strong opposition from a majority present at the meeting as well as widespread internal opposition to the project by the older generation of Sony executives, Kutaragi and his team had to be shifted from Sony's headquarters to Sony Music, a completely separate financial entity owned by Sony, so as to retain the project and maintain relationships with Philips for the MMCD development project (which helped lead to the creation of the DVD).

Ah okay.  I did learn something here about Nintendo and Sony teaming up to release the playstation; however, in what world was the 64 a failure?  I know for me and all my friends, we played the 64 90 percent more than the playstation.   We love even to this day, we still play the 64 sometimes.  Do you mean the sales were bad for the 64?  I never thought that the 64 was bad.

Back in the day it was "Original Nintendo" and "Super Nintendo".

But nowadays I pronounce N-E-S, saying each letter individually. But when it comes to SNES, I sound it out, as if the word "Snes" actually existed.

I still say, if you take the RPG library out of the PS1, you have a mediocre (at best) library. A few greats, Castlevania for example. But it quickly turns into Ape Escape. Then it quickly turns into Duke Nukem and the Planet of the Babes. For RPG fans, it is a great system. I like just a few RPGs, I'm not a big PS1 fan.

The d-pad is awful. And it is in the most prominent spot. That is awful. Games are not played the same as they were in the mid 90s. If you have a bad d-pad, move it. The dreamcast d-pad is horrible. They could have just put a cheese grater in its spot and it would have done the same thing. But they at least moved it out of the way.

Don't analyze anything I say in that video, in person, or in print. I'm talking out of my ass most of the time.

Now, I don't like the Playstation 1 because it was in direct competition with Nintendo. I was a huge fanboy. I had a very Highlander "There can be only one" way of thinking. I still hold disdain for the playstation.

Even after I had my Dreamcast realization a few years ago and I saw the era of my ways as a fanboy of any sort, I still don't like the PS1. The 3D that was crammed down our throats then is still there. The heart was willing but the body wasn't able, meaning they really really wanted to make 3D games, but the technology just wasn't there yet.

There are a few brights spots that I've found. Symphony of the Night, Contra Adventure, Castlevania Chronicles, and Metal Gear Solid. That's about it. The basketball games were ok for the time, but sports games never hold up unless they are Tecmo Super Bowl, RBI Baseball, or have Mutant League n the title.

One last thing,  the Xbox 360 controller is the best controller of all time.

I think the reason I call it the N.E.S. is cause most casual people tend to do the same so its easier when talking to them. If I just say Nintendo, then for some odd reason, they always think its the damned 64. If I say NES, they have no idea.

But when I say the fuckbox, everyone understands!  ;D :-* 8)

I say 8-bit Nintendo and N.E.S
On the playstation thing I will admit is a fantastic system... Unfortunately for us 2-d fighting fans, it's terrible, D-pad is stiff, and the ports are just awful. Marvel Superheroes vs Street fighter has hideous loading times and it took out the "tag" feature and to top it all off the animation is pretty bad too. Stick with Saturn and Dreamcast for Capcom fighters

What I see from that is more that Nintendo kinda caused Sony's console to be born (since Mr-Sony-President's anger pushed him forward in the project) rather than Sony caused Nintendo to fall, but that might just be me.

Back on topic: when I was young, it was the "Nintendo". Later on, it became the "NES" pronounced as a word (in my defense, it doesn't sound too bad in French :P ). Nowadays I say "NES" as a word in French, and "N.E.S" in English, just because I feel that's how it's best heard in each language. Most people in Quebec call it "the first Nintendo" now, or the "NES" like I do. "N.E.S" sounds awful in French actually (to me anyway).

SNES I pronounce "Super NES" (sounds like "super ness"). I don't know why but I pronouce it the same way in French and English, even though I say NES differently. I'm weird like that  :P

As a child I always used the word "Nintendo". As an adult I actually started calling it "Nintendo Entertainment System". I'm kind of anal like that though.

Oddly enough I have never called their second gen console "Super Nintendo Entertainment System". So I guess I break my own logic. I just call it "Super Nintendo". Maybe if I showed the machine more respect I wouldn't have ended up with one that turned colors on me.

I grew up in Arizona.

I pronounce it as N.E.S. and S.N.E.S. as well. When the Super Nintendo came out, I called the NES the "regular Nintendo" or the "original Nintendo". It also bothers me when I hear people pronounce them as words.

It seems like every video I've seen on YouTube has people pronouncing them as words, which is weird because almost everyone that's posted in this thread prefers to pronounce the letters.

I always called it the "Ness" or just "Nintendo".  I'm not exactly stuck on that though as I can sometimes call it by the letters.  I never really called the SNES the "Sness" though, usually was just Super Nintendo.  I'm from Alaska.
