Title: Got an Xbox Original, What now?
Post by: tafk on December 03, 2014, 10:44:12 am
Inspired by this post - http://vgcollect.com/forum/index.php/topic,5578.0.html

I just grabbed an Xbox 1 (screw you MS for your weird naming) and I don't really have any idea of good games for the system. I know that Halo 1 & 2 are a must but outside of that I have no idea of good games or exclusives for the system. So what should I be looking into in everyone's opinion?

Jet Set Radio Future
Knights of the Old Republic
Otogi 1&2
Crimson Skies
Phantom Dust
Panzer Dragoon Orta
Kung-Fu Chaos

JSRF is the best game on the system IMO, and that's not a knock against the system - it's just an incredible game.

Well he's playing FFT on the PSOne now, so I think he has his priorities straight. After you get the PSOne...and the Gamecube...then there are enough good exclusives on the 'box to justify picking one up.  :)

Seriously, though...having never owned, played, or wanted one - the two (console) exclusive games that I'd want to most play - would probably be...

a tie between

...Morrow Wind and SWKotOR.

Am I even remembering correctly about those 2 being console exclusives on the original XB?

That is correct. :)

Sphinx is excellent. I always think of it as a GC game because that's what I played it on, but it was out for all 3 systems at the time. I never finished it tho - somehow my save got corrupted and I had gotten so far into the game I didn't want to start over at the time. Wouldn't mind giving it another go now.

Great Exclusives:
-Arx Fatalis - Ultima: Underworld inspired action-RPG.
-Crimson Skies: High Road to Revenge - Awesome airplane game set in the 1930s. It's a bit open-ended and you can upgrade planes and unlock new planes as you move forward in your questline. Great looking graphics, to boot.
-Dungeons & Dragon: Heroes - Great little Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance clone.
-Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind - The 3rd Elder Scrolls game and the single best RPG of that generation.
-Halo 1 & 2 - Must-haves if you own an Xbox. Great multiplayer, and blockbuster-movie-eque campaign storylines.
-Jade Empire - Very unique action-RPG set in ancient China that centers around martial arts and mystical arts and has a cool moral/choice system.
-MechAssault 1 & 2 - Best mech-games of that generation, IMO. Less simulator-based, more action-based than other mech games.
-Panzer Dragoon Orta - A sequel to the Sega Saturn series. Gorgeous graphics and a great soundtrack mix to make a very relaxing game, actually.

Great Multiplatform Games:
-Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance 1 & 2
-Burnout 1-3
-Capcom Classics Collection 1 & 2
-Incredible Hulk: Ultimate Destruction
-Marvel: Ultimate Alliance
-Marvel vs. Capcom 2
-Mega Man Anniversary Collection
-Sonic Mega Collection Plus
-Spider-Man 1 & 2
-Tony Hawk's Underground 1 & 2
-X-Men Legends 1 & 2

I don't know if I'm alone in my opinion, but I liked Blinx: The Time Sweeper. It seems like people were disappointed with it back in the day because it was over-hyped, but it's not bad if you go in with no expectations.

Has anyone played Crazy Taxi 3? That's one I've been on the lookout for recently, I didn't know it existed until about a month ago.

Yeah, I played it a little while back; its pretty fun but its really more of the same if you've played the other entries in the series. It has a few weird drops in framerate, but besides that, the game runs well, and the graphics have gotten a decent overhaul compared to the Dreamcast entries and some stages( taken from previous games) have been retooled for this specific game.

Fixed and agree!

Xbox is good for 2 things - Morrowind. And to set your other consoles on top of so that the dust doesnt actually get on the system that matters.

Another nice thing about Xbox is it tends to run a bit cheaper than PS2. I mean PS2 isn't crazy expensive, but it seems I generally find the Xbox versions of cross-platform titles for cheaper. I still want to get one myself at some point because I'm limited to backwards compatible games only on my 360.

Another question to those not high in the audience.

I do not have an A/V cable yet for the system. Are there component cables and can someone point me in a direction of where I should be looking?

Not only are there... XBOX in HD is glorious to behold.

Most XBOX haters don't realize nearly every cross platform game released that hit xbox came out in higher resolution and faster framerate for the XBOX.

Burnout, Soul Calibur, etc, were all superior graphically on the xbox... If you played with this:

http://www.amazon.com/Microsoft-XBox-High-Definition-AV-Pack/dp/B00005R6YZ

Most games were 480p but quite a few (DOA Ultimate and several others) were 720p. A few puzzle games were even 1080p. Lot of games (again burnout) feature Dolby Digital 5.1 surround support.

This is a very under-appreciated aspect of this console.

Also worth noting. If it's soft modded you could emulate games in 720p as well.

Update:

Ha! Missed your reply Byron! Good stuff!

Ive heard of people modding an Xbox ... I have an original with one of those weird HD connectors that I never use. Maybe this would make the system worth using for me.

Is there a decent program set up for modding it? Im not very technical when it comes to stuff like that so would need some assistance!

You can upload files from the web that change the OS and firmware in the XBOX using an action replay and a copy of Splinter Cell. After doing this you can upload XBMC and dump movies, music, emulators, roms and other cool stuff on your XBOX. I've been putting it off, but I am going to turn one of my spare XBOX consoles into a mini-MAME doing this.

I'm still pretty big into the Xbox modding scene so if you or anyone needs some tips or a point at some good resources shoot me a PM.

Modded Xbox is god tier as an all in one emulation machine.

Most Xbox hate is unfounded as it was a superior machine to the PS2 and GameCube in almost every way.

It is really easy to mod an Xbox. However, it also greatly shortens the lifespan of your Xbox. It just struggles a lot more reading all those different disc-formats. You could CLEARLY hear the difference after modding mine, and now mine is starting to go out. So weigh the good with the bad before deciding to mod it.

Im not as big a hater on the original Xbox as I am the 360/One. As I said, I do still have my original Xbox and I used to play Morrowind like crazy when it was current. I also still consider the Xbox Microcon one of the best controllers ever. Ill definitely hit you up on a good way to mod that thing. Since you mentioned the PS2 and the Cube, I think its probably one of the strongest generations ever. If the Dreamcast would have been a better system, it would have been the strongest period.

I soft modded my xbox like that. I still have the memory card  with the file. The most painful part of this mod was getting the file on the card. It wouldnt work unless the OS was xp.

Yep, I tried using the Gameshark with vista and the memory card USB socket drivers are not compatible with the OS :/. I hear it works in Windows 7 if you're running XP mode (which makes sense), but I could not get it to work on my machine using Vista. I need to upgrade to 7 anyways. Why the hell I still have a machine with Vista baffles me lol

My xbox has been running soft modded for 10 years now and is still running. And it was a certified (in box and everything) refurb when I bought it. Only thing I had to replace was the DVD drive but that was starting to flake out before the mod.

The biggest danger is during the installation process. As long as it takes there is no further danger whatsoever.

If you are talking about a mod-chip... yeah I never trust those. I don't like taking a soldering iron to hardware unless it's broken.

Also check out my sell list. I have so many soft modded xboxes now I've started naming them after Scott Pilgrim characters. So far I have enough to account for 6 of his seven evil ex'es. :)

This thread inspired me again to try and get the Acton Replay to work on my laptop running Vista, and after trying many different things with drivers, firmware updates, registry changes, running in various comparability modes, and simply cannot get this thing to work with my system, specially the memory card port that plugs in via USB. Wish I had Windows 7 Ultimate, I could just run it in XP Mode. Or I can go out and grab a legacy system running XP. It just sucks :/

win 7, vista, win 8 will not work. I dont even sure if you run it in XP mode.

XP is the only one.

Install VirtualBox and create an XP Virtual Machine. This is the easiest way to get compatibility.

Maybe I missed it but it doesn't look like anyone mentioned Shenmue II  :D That's the one reason I got a Xbox when it released. It helps if you've played Shenmue though it does come with a recap video of the previous game. Of course, the story doesn't conclude and they'll probably never make the third part. I did start to prefer the Xbox over the PS2 for non-exclusives because it has a hard drive so save space was never an issue. Splinter Cell was another favorite of mine that wasn't exclusive but was on Xbox first which I know doesn't matter now, and it's probably easier to obtain digitally for PC.

I'll recommend these titles:

Blinx
Guilty Gear XX: Midnight Carnival
Halo (of course)
Dead Or Alive 1 & 2 Ultimate, 3, & Beach Volleyball
Voodoo Vince Verde

I have a small collection of original XBOX games, but I would say those are my favourite.

Ninja Gaiden Black (for a decent challenge)
Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay
Halo 1 & 2 (why not...)
Dead or Alive 2 Ultimate (decent fighting game)
I remember Brute Force being pretty cool
Panzer Dragoon Orta

Ive heard of people modding an Xbox ... I have an original with one of those weird HD connectors that I never use. Maybe this would make the system worth using for me.

Is there a decent program set up for modding it? Im not very technical when it comes to stuff like that so would need some assistance!

I just read this... Why would it shorten the lifespan of the machine? Dump the games to the HDD and put the discs on the shelf! My Xbox has a 200GB HDD with all of what I consider to be the must-haves on it.

What you are hearing is your laser sled and lens having to re-adjust for focus errors. It happens when using cheap media. This causes extra wear and tear on the sled assembly but not the laser itself.

I'm not really sure where the idea came from that burned media shortens the life of a laser, but im pretty sure its a myth.
