Hey all,
I hope everyone had a great holiday season! As you may have noticed we have not been very active with updates over the past few months. Sometimes real life gets in the way but we are getting ready to move forward with a round of updates. In addition to a few bug fixes one thing we want to roll out is a new way to view your main collection. Here is a small preview:
You'll be able to toggle between "list" and the new "shelf" view. I'm looking for feedback on how you think this should be implemented. Here are my thoughts as of now:
1. The default view will still be the list view. If a user isn't logged in, they'll have the ability to toggle the view but that will only be for that session.
2. If you are logged in, you can toggle the view which will be stored as a preference on your account. Whatever you select will be how you see collections sitewide.
Any thoughts or suggestions on this implementation?
Thanks!
Matt

I think how you have it planned out is how I would do it myself, is a good idea.
-
Could there be an option for a list view with no images, also?
Like
- list ( no images) ... And possibly no condition?
- list (images) with condition <- our current look
- images only
Otherwise I know folks have been asking for options in how many items can show per page and options for pages separated by alphabet/letters.
Excited to see the chances, Matt!

I look at this as the first step in adding the additional sorting options. Right now I really just want to lay the foundation.
-
I love this idea and you should defiantly implement it!
-
I still prefer the current view setting... Although, pretty awesome to know there's going to be toggling options.
Maybe the option that agwolf2097 (http://vgcollect.com/forum/index.php/topic,5688.msg79696.html) suggested. If I understood his feedback correctly, something like this:
Complete, original case with disc/cartridge or case-only: Front Box Art Image.
Disc/cartridge with manual or disc/cartridge only: Cart/Disc/Media Art Image.
Manual-only: No image, or convert Back Cover Art to Content Art?
Awesome work, nonetheless, matt. Since you did ask for feedback...

I think that more is always better :D
I like the current view if I want detailed information but the other view will be great if I just feel like looking through everything.
PS: please please PLEASE work on the publisher/developer :D
-
Looks cool! :)
It would be nice if we had a way to view the date we added our games to our collections in the lists view without clicking the edit button.

I second this. :D

It would be neat if on a mouse over it would show you more detail. Title, box, cart, manual, note, that stuff.
In the event a front cover isn't uploaded it should probably show the cart/hardware picture. In the event there isn't any picture uploaded it should probably have the title printed out instead. Just something to think about because not every entry has pictures uploaded.
I also second the notion of having a "compact" list view. No thumbnails and with the listings packed in close to fit as much on screen as possible.
Great job so far Matt!
Edit: Some way to skip by letter would be nice too. Same with browsing categories.
Edit 2: Sort by release date. Sort by rarity among VGCollect users.
-
LOVE THIS! Great Idea Matt!!! I love seeing the details and all but being able to visually scan more boxes will be a lifesaver. But I also agree in the big thing being able to sort and filter by letter rather than just straight pages. That would be very helpful than trying to remember that for PS2 my R's start on Page 3.

I Like

What other updates do you have after this?
-
I like it a lot! Can't wait to see it in action! :)

Looks nice!

Hey Matt,
Looks good so far. You know what would look amazing... if we could display our games on a faux wooden shelf ( I believe we had this feature WAY back when). That would be the bomb-diggity! ;)
oh and sorting by Letter of the alphabet would be great too ;D
thanks for all the hard work brotha!
-
Looks good! The only thing I might change is put the title of the game below the image because some of the box art has obscured name, esp on NES games, lol!

Or in Japanese! haha

That was WAY back then. This new display unfortunately won't look as cool as that but it will allow us to start adding some other cool functions.

I seriously miss the fake wooden shelf. Made me feel like my collection on here was really on display.
-
Doesn't another one of the collecting sites/apps use a fake wooden shelf? If I remember correctly from MetalJesus' video. When I saw it on there i didn't like the look of it but I can see how some people would like it. Made me feel like I was at a Blockbuster.

Darkadia does that. I don't have a Mac and I use it. However if VGCollect started doing it here, I would dump that site in an instant. I only use it for it's superficial looks, lol.

A shelf view would be fantastic. The ability to toggle info on/off would be nice too and as someone already mentioned, publisher/developer data.
Otherwise, I think everything is pretty nice.

Devs and pubs are back!

日本語 (Japanese language-Nihongo) Gotta Love it.

You should also be able to choose which games show the spine or the front of the case. And if you have a box/case.
-
We'd need to have a separate spine scan. That's a bit... um, too much, what about items that don't have spines? (Digital games, swag, etc.)
-
It's a nice option if people want to use this lay out. But I'll stick with the list personally.
Do what you like though. :)
-
looks like the wooden shelves would be a HUGE hit! It would look just like the awesome Mac only software called "Delicious Library". I would pay for that feature! ;) now there's an idea.
-
Matt i love the idea of the shelf view but with it should come an option of how many youd like to display per page and maybe add little icons for game/item, case, manuel, and complete. to allow you to check the status of the items in a collection at a glance.
-
I'm dying for the shelf view!
..and I'm kinda sad that the badges for reaching milestones in your collection aren't working for me. :'(
-
Shelf & In-Line search function!
-
The shelf view looks nice, an update I really wanted to be implemented! Good job!
-
Not sure if your still looking for feedback, but I love the look and idea of adding a shelf. It makes it easier to view your collection and just gives it all a nice look. Adding the name above or below the game box would be kind of cool too.
-
This is Great News!!! I have been looking forward to a cool change for a while and this is it!!!!! Thank you ;D ;D ;D ;D

I didn't check all of this before I'm posting this so if it was discussed just ignore me. But I often want to see if I have a game in my collection or see if I what I have in a series so a way to search just my collection nothing else would be cool. Like type in .hack and all my .hack games would come up for my collection only without having to search the database for them and seeing if the *in collection pops up underneath it

BEST NEWS ALL DAY!
-
The shelf view is pretty cool, I would use that instead of the list view.
-
I am curious to know if the shelf, and the search engine, are still in the works.
And I would suggest a way to sort our collection by alphabetical order. Like each "pages" correspond to a letter. If I am looking for a game in particular, I would only have to look for it by its first letter.
-
I don't know if this is something already working or not because I mostly visit this site while at work and well, the internet here doesn't work right. Most of the time, I cannot even open the tabs to see how many items I have in each part of my collection and I cannot see 99% of the pictures in the forums.
But is there a ranking anywhere that shows tiers, based on how many items each person has in their collection? Such as, everyone who has between 1000-1500 items is listed in a tier?
-
Hey Matt,
Love the site man, but when can we look forward to some updates? at the least, just let us know if anything is in the works.... and is the shelf view available yet? would love to see that.
thanks hombre!
