Title: Yooka-Laylee!
Post by: kamikazekeeg on April 30, 2015, 05:11:30 pm
Been waiting for the announcement for a while now, but finally Playtonic Games revealed what exactly their game and characters will be for their spiritual successor to Banjo-Kazooie...Yooka-Laylee! I know I should keep my expectations in check, but seeing this and A Hat in Time making their way through development to reinvigorate the mostly dead 3D platform genre has me excited.

The kickstarter will be going up tomorrow, but we do have our characters...

I think Nintendo would have too much pride to do that without buying the IP but I also never thought Nintendo would make mobile and PC games so... :D

I love the name of these characters and the design of Laylee. I'm also really glad they announced PS4 as a potential platform, I'm sure it will hit it's goal on Kickstarter. 3D platforming definitely needed a comeback. Lobodestroyo is another new 3D platformer coming soon that looks promising.

Never heard of that one, but the one I backed awhile ago was "A Hat in Time".  It's in beta now, maybe making release this year, but it has a lot of Banjo influence in terms of gameplay ideas.

I've heard of A Hat in Time but it seems like they aren't planning to bring that game to consoles so I don't really keep up with it.

The Kickstarter was up for 40 minutes before it was completely funded and now 3 hours in, it's almost triple the amount lol I'm backing it right away. Some cool stretch goals, as they are looking to implement local multiplayer games and even add in mine-cart styled areas like in Donkey Kong Country.

Wow! This is being funded so fast! They mentioned the possibility of physical copies in the FAQ so I'm gonna wait for that to buy it. Most people aren't even home from work yet this could probably reach all of the stretch goals in 24 hours.

It'll hit a million in a few hours I think.  Hopefully they get a reasonably priced physical box, I know I'd grab that for the Wii U.

I remember watching a friend playing a bit of Banjo Kazooie as well as a bunch of other games, and while I was a mid-nineties born gamer, I myself did not own a Nintendo 64 until very recently.  Yooka-Laylee is looking great and the music is sounding especially wonderful.

And GOOD LORD!  The community has made short work of the Kickstarter goal, and the stretch goals are just flying by.  As of writing this now, the Kickstarter has reached £560K, so we've acquired local 2 Player co-op.

I'm super extremely excited for Yooka-Laylee  ;D Plus, Playtonic tweeted this afternoon that if they reach 1 million (pounds) pledged by midnight, Grant Kirkhope is going to play Ukulele outside the E3 convention center, and I know I would like to see that  :D

I pledged for a console release for now, the physical rewards are a bit too pricey for me  :-\ Still, I can't wait to see how it goes!

I'd be all over the N64 box recreation, but I don't have 500 bucks to spare on this lol And they already made 1 million! They are just about to hit over 1,100,000.  They are going to easily make 2 million I think.

Might be time to go and revisit the Banjo games, even Nuts & Bolts to judge it more on its own merits.  Nice to have the HD versions on the 360.

A million USD yes, but not a million pounds, which is their money unit  :) It's coming pretty close, though; they are currently at 752k pounds. Let's just hope that the 3.5 hours remaining will be enough!

According to twitter, they are counting the 1 million in USD as the mark for that.  Grant will be at E3 with his ukulele :D Also I totally misread the stretch goals, in that they are in pounds, not USD.  They are still guaranteed to get it though as they are up to 1.2 million USD now in just the first day.  They'll get it by tomorrow easily and then we'll see what extras they decide to add.

I don't quite understand why this needs to be a indie project. I want full-on retail release, and with so many people backing this project, it's hard to understand why they couldn't find a big publisher to put this out properly.

There's always the chance they could get a publisher after this, but the idea comes down to doing it this way gives them much more freedom to do whatever they want with the project.

I would honestly be surprised if they didn't announce a publisher not long after the Kickstarter has been completed.

The issue with big publishers these days is that they want Payable DLC, Microtransactions, Paid this, Paid that, Yearly releases .etc

This type of game doesn't fit into any of that criteria, they might have pitched it and publishers simply didn't want to take the risk. They couldn't milk it after release and the amount of sales was uncertain.

That being said, I am excited for this. I haven't backed it yet but most likely will.

Bumping for a new trailer and a release date of Q1 2017! So happy with the look of the game.  It'll fill that Banjo-Threeie hole in my heart.

RIIIIIIIIIIIIIIISE!

The folks over at Playtonic Games have announced that the game will receive a physical release and that they are working on a plan to allow Kickstarter backers to upgrade their digital pledge to receive a physical copy.

I was so happy when I read that.  I'm just hoping it's a negligible cost to upgrade.

I assume it'll be a few bucks to upgrade, 5 to 10 bucks, but I'm cool with that.  Really glad I can do an upgrade though so that I don't have to buy a second copy lol

Wii U version cancelled, Switch version announced.  Lots of vague information.

I personally backed for Wii U, so depending on the cost to upgrade to physical, I may request a refund and give my money to BestBuy/Amazon.

I read an article about 6 months back, talking about how Playtonic was only working on the PC and Wii U version, because those platforms are first and foremost... and that Team17 was porting the PC/Wii U version to PS4/X1.  Apparently, that is no longer the case.  I'm wondering what other management shenanigans they are and will be up to.

I'm a bit worried this might happen with Bloodstained as well, but it would be way more of a slap in the face since it was listed a a stretch goal.

It's not unexpected, though they said its because they were running into problems getting it working on the system.  It's really a smarter idea in the end to not release for the system with it being dead and to switch focus to the Switch.  At least they'll offer refunds or Switch upgrades, though I imagine the Switch version won't release till later in 2017, with the release date for the game being in April.

I'm also happy that they are gonna allow for physical upgrades.  I had grabbed it for PC at the time, but I think I'd prefer a PS4 physical version if possible.

Yeah.. there's no way they are gonna release a Wii U game in 2018..

The library for the Wii U in 2018 will be Just Dance 2019 and Skylanders if that's still alive. Probably LEGO and TellTale stuff too. Maybe some of the crappy indie games that are sold on Wii U for $4.99 or less.

100% guaranteed a Wii U version will never happen for Bloodstained either, especially with its release window.  There really isn't much of a good reason for them to continue development for an outdated and dead console.  I'm expecting it to do the same as Yooka-Laylee, where you can get a refund or change to the Switch, which is the smarter plan in the long run.

I agree with the sentiment... but you do this campaign, you say WE WILL MAKE A WII U version, because YOU want it... but only if we get THIS MUCH money.  And then you say, "Eh, nevermind".  The statement isn't, "We will make a Wii U version, if you pay us enough AND the system isn't dead".

Personally, I have no intent of ever jumping on the bandwagon for a big hyped Kickstarter game ever again.  That's 3 for 3 with mismanagement and shit because these big name devs get too big for their breeches and don't have a publisher to tell them "Don't make these promises, dumbass."

Maybe I'm cranky, maybe I haven't had enough coffee this morning.  I don't know.  I agree that it doesn't make sense financially to release it for the Wii U, but I was looking forward to playing it on Wii U.

I think I'm done too. I like the little stuff.  I'm out on these big games.  It's just not a good model.  I hope Bloodstaind works out.  It's a real cool premise and the demo was fun.  I just hope it keeps on.

I'm looking forward to Super Russian Roulette.  I backed it and get of updates.  It will be silly fun.

I'm sorry.  2 for 3, Bloodstained hasn't officially announced they are cancelling the Wii U version.  I don't think Bloodstained have done anything to convey mismanagement or anything, yet.  IIRC, they even hired a company specifically to work on the Wii U port, so if the Wii U version doesn't come out, that company is gonna take a hit.

So...now that it's out, how do you all like it?
I think it is simply a fun and charming platformer like the classic N64 days, given the pedigree of the developers. It's the Banjo-Kazooie 3 that should've been instead of that Nuts & Bolts crap!
And I'm not being bias because I backed it here, it's not perfect but it's still good. I hope Playtonic makes more games soon.

I think it set out to do what it wanted to do and it worked out for the most part.  It's not perfect, it has some issues, and it's not as good as what its trying to be a spiritual successor of, but its a reasonable enough start. I'm hoping with this they can move on to make something a lot better in the future.  I sorta see Yooka-Laylee as them shaking the rust off of a game style they haven't made in awhile.

Hoping for good stuff too with A Hat in Time sometime this year.

As bad as I want this game I think I'm going to hold out until the Switch physical release comes out. From everything I've seen and heard, this truly is what Banjo Kazooie 3 should have been and it just doesn't feel right to play it on any other system than a Nintendo console.

Well, never mind! I visited a local game store tonight and they had the ps4 version marked down to $30 so I decided to grab it.
