These games definately shaped my gaming interests and all of these got ridiculous playtime over the years:

Super Metroid
Super Castlevania IV/Castlevania - Symphony Of The Night (it's a tie)
Doom I & II
Final Fantasy VII
Zelda - A Link To The Past

honorable mentions (because 5 are not enough):
Terranigma
Secret Of Evermore
Lufia II
Secret Of Mana
Harvest Moon
Super Mario series (if I had to pick one it probably would be SMW)

5. Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (GBC version - Harry Potter in general defined my childhood)

4. Need for Speed Series (Underground 1 & 2, Carbon and Most Wanted, but mostly Carbon)

3. Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past (GBA version)

2. Mega Man Battle Network (5 - Team Colonel and 6 - Cybeast Falzar)

1. Pokemon (specifically the 3rd generation: LeafGreen and Emerald versions) - This was THE game of my childhood. Nothing even comes close for me  ::)

Honorable mentions go to LEGO racers and Toy Story 2 on the PC; some of the very first games I played. It sure is interesting seeing what other people played a lot of when they were kids!

Pokemon Red Version: Pokemon came out in the US when I was in 6th grade, and I was the third person in my middle school to buy it and start playing it. This was well before Pokemon became huge and I remember being motivated to wake up about 45-min earlier each morning so I could watch the anime on Fox, before it switched over to Kids WB. But anyhow, I was obsessed with Pokemon! It took me roughly a year and the purchase of a Gameshark, but I caught all 151. When Pokemon did become insanely popular I totally got sept up in the hype, seeing the first two movies in the theatre, I collected the cards feverishly, watched the anime religiously every Saturday, and bought just about everything I could afford that was Pokemon related! My love for the series seemed to die down shortly after Gold and Silver came out, and wouldn't come back until years later when Gen 4 came out on the DS.

Sonic the Hedgehog 3: My first game console was a Sega Genesis so naturally I was part of team Sega during the 16-bit era. The original Sonic the Hedgehog was my motivation to get a Genesis, however I remember hearing about Sonic 3 years later and crapping my pants! My aunt ended up getting it for me and I remember obsessively playing this game. As a kid I was only ever able to get to Icecap Zone, but that didn't stop me from replaying it over and over again. Years later the soundtrack is still my favorite of all time and it is still my favorite Sonic came hands down.

Super Mario 64: On Christmas Eve 1996 my Aunt (same one who bought me Sonic 3) surprised the hell out of me and bought me an N64 along with Super Mario 64, a game I had seen in gaming magazines and wanting so badly! I remember being absolutely floored by the 3D graphics and environment the first time I played since until then I had never seen graphics like this anywhere. It was because of this game and my subsequent obsession with it that I became a Nintendo fanatic during the 5th gen, practically ignoring the PS1 and Saturn and focusing almost exclusively in the N64 during its lifespan. Super Mario 64 was one of the first games I beat and it's a still a game I love going back to and playing all the way through.

Final Fantasy VII: I was a late bloomer to RPGs, not really having an interest in them until 2000 when a neighbor sold me on how great they are. The game that he particularly turned my on to was Final Fantasy VII. I yearned so much to play this game I actually ended up buying a PS1 along with a copy of FFVII the day the PS2 launched, which was interesting since the store employee thought I was mistaken and really wanted to get a PS2 (which i did, bit they were sold out anyways on launch day). I fell instantly in love with FFVII and to this day it is one of the only games I've put more than 200-hours into. It also made me a huge JRPG fan, especially at the time. From 2000 to 2002 I played and bought a ton of other PS1 JRPGs, and it was my favorite genre at the time. However, FFVII was always my favorite and is still the best RPG I've ever played.

Perfect Dark: Prior to playing this game I was a huge fan of Goldeneye 007, but for whatever reason this game left a far greater impression on me. I remember renting this game about 5 times before I was able to get a copy of my own, and for some reason I have incredibly fond memories of doing this. the game itself is one of the best FPS games I've ever played to this day, and I love the setting and vibe of this game so much.

Honorable mentions: The Flintstones (Genesis), Dark Colony (PC), Ocarina of Time, Donkey Kong Country 2, Sonic Adventure, Shenmue, Gran Turismo 3, Crusin World.

Playing those games now instantly brings strong nostalgia of my childhood. I was a SEGA person as you can guess:

1. Sonic the Hedgehog series - Master System / Mega Drive
2. Ecco series - Master System / Mega Drive
3. Alex Kidd in Miracle World - Master System
4. Story of Thor (aka Beyond Oasis) - Mega Drive
5. Dynamite Headdy - Mega Drive

Honorable mentions go to Secret of Mana, Super Metroid & Zelda III on Super Nintendo that strongly influenced me at this time and bring a lot of memories now, but I borrowed the console to play those so my playtime wasn't comparable with the SEGA titles above.

I remember also having a huge playtime on Landstalker, Soleil (aka Crusader of Centy), Strike series, Streets of Rage series and Shinobi series. I think I played Sonic games more than all the other combined though ! :P

1. Donkey Kong Country/Donkey Kong 64
2. Super Smash Bros./Super Smash Bros. Melee
3. Mario Kart 64/Mario Kart Double Dash
4. Sonic 3D Blast
5. Luigi's Mansion

I kind of cheated by combining certain games from the same series.

Super Mario Bros. 3
Pretty much my first video game.

Pokemon Red
The one game I got in trouble for playing because I couldn't put it down. Even in school!

Star Wars: Shadows of the Empire
The first game my father and I played all the way through together.

Mario Kart 64
No need for a introduction.

StarCraft
It played great even on dial-up. Great story.

Mega Man Battle Network 3: White (GBA)
-This game and Pokemon Red were responsible for sparking my interest in RPGs, which is now my favorite genre. It was also one of my first Mega Man games.

Pokemon Red (GB)
-I bought it used a while after it released and everyone else interested in it had already played it, but it was still my first Pokemon game and my first RPG.

Roller Coaster Tycoon 2 (PC)
-One of the first games I'd routinely wake up early in the morning to play, long before anybody else in the house was awake.

Sid Meier's Civilization III (PC)
-So many hours put into this game. It's so easy to say "just one more turn" every time.

Super Smash Bros Melee (GCN)
-Great to play alone or with friends, it remains my favorite Smash Bros game.

Honorable mention: Lego Island (PC), for being one of the first games I can ever remember playing.

Ok...I gotta throw the original Wolfenstein 3D into the mix.  I played that ish so much that I would go to bed and see blue mazes with my eyes closed!   :o  I can still hear the screams of dying Germans and barking dogs to this day.  Not to mention, it kinda is the granddaddy of all 1st person shooters since.

The second and third generations of the Pokemon series...Gold Version and FireRed Version, specifically

The indomitable Super Mario 64

Super Smash Bros. Melee...I have fond memories of playing this almost every afternoon with my brother and friend for years

Super Mario World (in the form of Super Mario Advance 2)

Age of Empires II: The Conqueror's Expansion...played it often with my dad and brother over a local connection. Good times.

Awesome replies

Growing up playing MS-DOS games Lode Runner, Pitfall, Fairy Godmom, Treasure Island Dizzy from ages 3-7. My parents bought me Nintendo Entertainment System then. I grew up with Mario Bro. Duck Hunt bundle (still have today) and many other NES games to come including; Little Nemo, Yo Noid, Blaster Master, Mega Man 2, M.C. Kids, Little Ninja Brothers, Tiny Toons, Bubble Bobble, Snow Bros, and The Adventures of Lolo series.

Moving into the next gaming era, I chose the Super Nintendo Entertainment System to follow suit playing many classics these titles really stood out and I kept coming back to them.

Eventually moving into the 32-bit era, I chose Sega Saturn with the Virtua Fighter 2/Daytona USA/Virtua Cop bundle. What really caught my attention was Die Hard Arcade being exclusive for Saturn.

Super Mario Sunshine

Personally I still rank it above Galaxy (and that one was also a masterpiece). I'd love a second Sunshine so much, imagine what they could pull off today with this idea...but this will never happen I guess.

Final Fantasy VIII - One of the first games I played, and the first story-driven game I'd played. From a young age until very recently it was my favourite game of all time, it only recently got dethroned by Persona 3, but it still holds a special place in my heart no other game can ever replace.

Oddworld: Abe's Exoddus - The first game I ever owned. To this day it's my favourite platformer of all time. I always took really poor care of my PS1 discs when I was little, and I could hardly ever get this game to play, but on the few occasions I did it was such a great feeling.

Croc 2 - Not the best game ever, but I played the living shit out of this as a kid, and it's nostalgic. Though I don't remember if I ever finished it. I lost the game when I was quite young, only managed to get a new copy of it several months ago.

Monkey Hero - Okay, I have seriously conflicting thoughts about this game nowadays. I loved this game so much as a kid, it probably took up more of my time as a kid than any game other than FF8, but a couple of years ago I played Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past for the first time.. and.. just wow... it can't even be exaggerated how much of a ripoff of LttP Monkey Hero was. Like, holy shit. Everything from the gameplay, the structure, the items, even the goddamn UI and inventory screens were copypasted straight from LttP. The UI and inventory screens just had a slight recolour and the items were different, but had the exact same functions as LttP's. Just about the only things it didn't steal were the world and story. But there's definitely elements of LttP's story in Monkey Hero. Goddamn. It is a good game, but that's mainly just because LttP was too. I can't even play and enjoy LttP because it just feels like I'm playing an older version of Monkey Hero.

Those are really my main four, but if I had to choose a fifth:

Digimon World - This is quite a late one, and may not really count, as I didn't play it until I was about 10 years old. The other four were all games I'd played starting from a younger age, but I'm slightly strapped for ideas, so hey. When I first befriended my now best friend one of our main mutual loves was Digimon. I don't remember exactly how I first came to play it at all, but one day when I went to his house I guess he showed me that he had the game and we played it, and soon it became our game. This game took a LONG-ass time to beat. At least a year. Digimon World is one of those games that requires a mountainload of exploration and experimentation and a LOT of trial and error to beat (kind of hard to explain exactly what I mean, but basically beating the game isn't easy), and these were the days when the internet wasn't as available to check for walkthroughs, so we had to figure everything out ourselves. My hand still stings from the high-five when we finally beat the final boss. Good times.

5. Super Smash Bros. Brawl
4. Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare/ World at War
3. Guitar Hero 3: Legends of Rock
2. Sonic Adventure DX
1. Pac-Man World 2

HM: Kung Fu Chaos, Mario Kart Wii, Super Mario Galaxy, and Tom and Jerry in War of the Whiskers

Really tough one for me since there were so many. My top 5 are standard-fare but I mean I'm being honest! lol

1. Goldeneye 007
Played this one to death both SP (getting those single-player cheats!) and MP (huge hit in my neighborhood). Got to the point where I was so good at MP that no-one wanted to play against me lol.

2. Final Fantasy 7
I remember being absolutely mind blown by the demo disc of the first mission in the game. To this day it's in my top 5 favorite experiences. And dat soundtrack doe!

3. Super Metroid
My favorite game of all time and one I played to death. The amount of clever ways that you can sequence break this game is just incredible. A perfect game.

4. Half-Life
Best PC Game I played until the second, and it got me into the whole modding community (I made mods as well).

5. Super Mario 64
I remember playing the demo for this (my first 3D game) at the local Toys R Us and being ABSOLUTELY mind-blown. I didn't play anything else until I 100%ed the game.

Runner-Ups -

Resident Evil
The first game I played that showed me that a game could scare the crap out of me. RE1 was THE reason why I bought a PS1.

Secret of Mana
The only multi-player RPG I've ever played and beating this with my brother and our neighborhood friend when it came out is just an amazing memory for me. Such a well-made game...

Super Smash Bros. Melee
Still my favorite fighting game and Smash Bros. game in the series. Everything about this game feels perfect to me, and the controls are especially fun compared to other SM titles. Played this game to death for years!

Phantasy Star III - Was probably the worst of the series as far as storyline, and character growth, but was the first RPG I really got into and played to the end. My mother bought this for me at a place called Software Etc during a random visit to our local Mall. It was in the bargain bin for $14.99. I had to agree to not ask for anything else for awhile, and not gripe when it came to chores. As straight forward as any RPG of its time. You'd recruit people for a common goal to kill some boss terrorizing the land, and then would have a choice of two women to marry at the end of each generation. Depending on who you chose, you'd get any number of characters and storylines. Two faithful cyborgs were by your side the entire trip. I can't say I'll ever go back and play this again, but my heart holds a fond place for this game as it introduced me to RPGs, and it kept me busy while I saved up money for FF6, and a SNES.

Final Fantasy VI - I can't say enough about this game. I'm one of those old guys who rants and raves about this one. If PSIII was the first RPG I played start to finish, FFVI was the first I completed. My first glance into this game was at my friend's house for a sleepover. He had just gotten it and was only a few hours into the initial scenario split from the Returner's meeting. I was immediately hooked. I guess you can say this was the reason I purchased PSIII. My first play through was 60+ hours. There wasn't a part of the map I didn't investigate. I bought gaming magazines that had tips & tricks, game art, whatever I could fine. Every year I still play this game at least once.

Chrono Trigger - This was the first game I had ever anticipated. I never really was an avid gamer until I bought a SNES. I started seeing advertisements in magazines for this new "Squaresoft" game coming out. Much like PSIII, I found this game and begged my mom to buy it for me as a Christmas gift. If she bought me that game, I wouldn't ask for anyone else. I meant it, too. She reluctantly agreed, and sure enough, it was my main gift, though, I did get other things. Sadly, I wasn't the perfect son as I located where she hid the game and put about 4 hours into it before feeling guilty and putting it back...after deleting my save. I don't go back and play CT as much as FFVI, but I do revisit it often. Most recently last year. I've seen every ending, and all of the extra cutscenes you can setup. SEE: Saving Lucca's mom. This will forever be in my top 2 games of all time. Chrono Trigger, and Final Fantasy VI helped me through some dark middle school times of my life. I wasn't a tragically bullied kid, and had a wonderful home life, but these games allowed for me an escape.

The Legend of Zelda - I never have beaten this game, and to be honest, I watched my brother play this far more than I ever will. My first gaming system was a NES. I couldn't tell you how excited my 8-year old self was whenever I saw this unwrapped. I had my very own NES...I just didn't have a TV. So I either played this on the livingroom tv, which was normally kicked off by my sister, or my brother's tv, which was normally him playing. I watched him play this from start to finish. Witnessing every battle, every boss, and seeing Ganon vanquished. The final dungeons music still creeps me out. I can't think back on my childhood and not think of my brother playing this.

Sonic the Hedgehog - If I could go back, I would have asked for an SNES rather than a Genesis. Of course, I can't say I didn't enjoy the crap out of Sonic the Hedgehog. Sonic was the first side-scroller I had ever beaten. And beaten. And beaten. I only had about six games for Genesis and they were mostly sports games. So Sonic was something I could zone out into and play for hours. He was the mascot for Sega, and went head to head with Mario for a time.

Honorable Mentions - Joe Montana's Sports Talk Football, The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, Final Fantasy 7, Final Fantasy 8, Xenogears.

FF7, FF8, and Xenogears could have easily been on my list, but the ones listed were responsible for directing me to these games.

Super Mario Bros
Pokemon
Starcraft
Sonic 2
Comix Zone

Super Mario Bros was the game everyone had. It was something that even someone not being into video games would have a hard time escaping. I spent every bus trip to school and every lunch for several years playing Pokemon. StarCraft became an obsession in my early teens. And Sonic 2 and Comix Zone were just two favorites I always went back too and always seemed to be there for me.

Number one for me has to be Space Invaders in the arcade. Spent many quarters playing one in the lobby of a hotel we were staying at on vacation in Hawaii in 1980. I had played other games previously, like Sea Wolf but Space Invaders kept me coming back for more.

I'd also have to include Boot Hill at number 2, it was a game my (late) father and I played a lot in the arcades back then as well. My other top three would have to include Mr. Do, which is my favorite arcade game of all time and number 4 would have to be arcade Donkey Kong.

For number 5 I'd have to include my first 2600 game (beside combat) which was Asteroids, a port I still love today

5. Plok (SNES) I never owned this game (I just recently remembered the name of it.) but I'd rent it every chance I got.

4. Spyro the Dragon 1,2, and 3. (PS1) I definitely DID own these games. For the longest time I only had a demo of the first game but eventually somebody bought me Spyro 1 and I played it non-stop.

3.Resident Evil 2 (PS1) It scared the shit out of me but I couldn't stop playing. The Licker that jumps through the 2-way mirror still gets me today even when I know it's coming.

4. Sonic the Hedgehog 3 & Knuckles (Genesis) Arguably the best Sonic game. A lot of people like 2 more but Knuckles is my favorite in the Sonic universe. The fact that you could lock these two games together was crazy to me and I always tried locking all my games onto Sonic and Knuckles, only to be treated with the "No Way" Screen.

5. Final Fantasy VII-IX (PS1) The series that got me and basically everyone else into RPG's. While I've come to be more of a Dragon Quest guy, I still love the PS1 era Final Fantasy games with all my heart. Yes, even VIII.

Honorable mentions are the Pokemon series, (I took my gameboy everywhere. I one time bawled when i thought i broke my Crystal version. It wasn't broken..) The Oddworld series, Crash Bandicoot, and Croc 2.

1. Super Mario 64
Similar to Kazooie/Tooie, it cemented my love of 3D platformers which I absolutely love more than anything 2D.

2. Legend of Zelda NES/Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
I feel like these games fed into my love of exploration in video games that turned into enjoyment for games like Fallout 3, searching every corner I can find secrets.

3. Tony Hawk Pro Skater
The late 90's/early 2000's was all about this series.  While they didn't really move me into any other type of gaming, I played basically all the Tony Hawk till they eventually killed off the series after Proving Ground. That's 9 games which I think is quite a lot lol One of the series that really got me into the music too up to a certain point and I felt turned me on to certain bands like Bad Religion, Vandals, etc, at a time when kinda my musical direction was forming.  I haven't played one in like 7 or 8 years, but I still got certain music tracks locked in my head and some of the well known maps of the series remembered.

4. Banjo Kazooie/Tooie
Same as Mario 64 above, where I just love these kind of games, even the lesser Rare ones like Conker, DK64, and into the future such as the first Jak & Daxter and Okami.  Sadly with the Microsofting of Rare and other series kinda dying off or going into directions I didn't like, 3D platforming kind of died off for the most part.

5. Goldeneye
This started my love for FPS games.  I played the main story a ton and the multiplayer a lot, moving into Perfect Dark after that, and then away from the N64 and onto Xbox with Halo and then eventually PC with Battlefield 1942 and Counter-Strike.

Why have 5 when you can have 10? I don't mean to shameless plug on this thread just for "the views". I would like to give credit to the thread for inspiring me to make this video.

Damn uh...

Super Mario World  (First console game I ever played)
Timesplitters 2 (Absolutely fell in love with this game and this franchise)
Goldeneye 64 (The Predecessor to Timesplitters, and the game that got me to start watching and fall in love with the James Bond film franchise)
Mario Kart 64 (Fucking Blue shell, what else can I say, this was a game most of my family joined in playing)
Tetris Attack  (Tetris in general, but this one the most.  This being the other game my family jumped in on... followed by Pokemon Puzzle League, but it's the same thing)

Honorable mention... Pieces for SNES.  Never owned that game, but I rented it from Hollywood Video, Blockbuster Video, and Video Central probably like once a month, and EVERYONE in my family would jump in on this game.  No clue why we never bought it.

I'm getting such a kick out of reading all of these! I figure I can do mine. These aren't in any particular order, except for the last one.

Breath of Fire: My very first RPG. You never forget your first, am I right? I received it as a birthday gift from a friend of mine when I turned ten. Prior to this, I played the Marios and the Mega Mans and the Sonics and so on, but Breath of Fire just flabbergasted me. The game wasn't over in an afternoon! The game had a story with lots of dialogue! The game had two fierce female characters that I could use in battle! Breath of Fire started my love for the RPG genre.

Mega Man X: Of course, before I even heard of Breath of Fire, I was playing Mega Man X once a day. We received a Super Nintendo as a Christmas present and everyone received one game along with it. Mine was Mega Man X and...I can still play this game like a boss. I wish Capcom would get their **** together and make a Mega Man X9 already.

Chrono Trigger: Yep. Not much to say that hasn't already been said. This game rocks and is still easy to pick up and play.

Kirby Super Star: This was a wonderful game that made me wish for a four player multi-tap. Since the game was two-players, my siblings would always argue over who got to play the helper. There were so many great memories from Spring Breeze all the way to The Arena.

Secret of Mana: This was -THE- game that defined my childhood because it combined action, adventure, and RPG elements into one fantastic cartridge. All of this, combined with the gorgeous presentation and soundtrack make it my number one pick. Whether I was playing it by myself or playing it with a friend or family member, I always enjoyed going through this game. Like Chrono Trigger, I have no problems popping it back in these days.

Honorable Mentions: Mega Man X3, Mega Man 3, Mario 3 and Final Fantasy II (IV).

Mega Man 6

What can I say I love mega man. And as a kid my mother would buy me a copy of the new game every year for X-mas. I still have each one of those in their boxes with booklets to this day on one of my shelves. I probably play one of those at least once or twice a week.

Not quite sure if they defined my childhood but I used to play them a lot so in some part they defined my tastes and what I do like to play.

* Moon Patrol (Atari): used to play this title a lot with a friend and when I said a lot I really mean it, we played this title all the afternoons after school and on Saturdays / Sunday I always went to his house just to play with it even before the 8:00 AM, at that time my parents weren't able to purchase neither the console or the cartridge so always was visiting those friends that were popular or with money to have them.

* Snoopy and the Red Baron (Atari) : when I was on my school vacations one of my uncles took me to the Arcades, don't have to said that it was one of my best fucking days of my entire life, were I did played Galaga, Asteroids and other awesome titles, guess that I don't have to say that am old anyway this games as simple it looks really took my attention and instantly became one of the most played, each coin was precious for me.

* Double Dragon (Sega Master): another of my uncles purchased this console to my cousins which came with this title, it's hard to admit it but I did played a Sega before a Nintendo console, the game was pure perfection because there was a huge change of graphics, sound and fun between the Atari and this one also the fact that there are unlimited lives before the last level made this pure fun.

* Super Mario Bros. (NES): the first title from this console that I ever played, none of my friends had this one at that time so I used to pay some pesos to one mothafucka from my neighborhood, he practically rented the console / game at his house for a full play but if there were a Game Over no mater were we have to pay again, God bless the unlimited lives code (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5-DNt_erbL4) and the dude who discover this one.

* Mega Man 2 (NES): first title from this console that I owned, even when it didn't had the label was very special for me, used to play this one all days, even my mom told me a lot of time that I'll became an idiot someday, not quite sure if I ended like one cause still love to play at any chance that I have, for me the Icon of Capcom is not Ryu, it's this blue little fella, when I saw the bosses from this title at the third part of this franchise totally went crazy and screamed like a little girl.

pokemon blue (and silver) - pokemon is the main reason i put my effort into reading, i couldn't read til i was ~7, and pokemon is what motivated me, because i could barely play it without reading. and my brother got annoyed by inventory management for me lmao. also got me into drawing.
super mario rpg - first jrpg and i thought it was THE SHIT. imagine my surprise when there was a whole genre dedicated to gameplay like this game.
tetris attack - bro and i spent a lot of time... by the time we were adults i would sweep the floor with him on this damn game. my cousin and her fiance and my ex and his brothers would sit and honestly couldn't keep up with what we were doing. good times. i almost attempted the hard mode speed run on this one, actually... then i decided not to when i looked it up and knew i'd not beat the... 9 minute run time? something like that.
yoshi's island - by the time i was 9 i could beat the entire game after school by the time my dad got home
animal crossing (gcn) - taught me how to type, got me through a lot of late-childhood trauma and spawned my love for the series. i still have my first town all the way from 2003? 2004? on a mem card.

i had a snes for the first 8 years, then an n64, then a gcn when i was 10.
and a ps2 when i was 14.
i'd say childhood 'ended' for me at ~12, a lot of shit started happening in my life

honorary mentions to super mario kart, super mario world, harvest moon back to nature, pokemon stadium and 2, the lion king SNES, sim city 4, rollercoaster tycoon and 2, mario kart double dash, blinx the time-sweeper

Chronological order by played. I was a child in the 00s.

Super Mario Bros (NES). My cousin borrowme his NES and the first contact I have with videogames was Super Mario Bros. I don't remeber much of it, but I guess It was fun as hell because even my parents played it. I got the SNES later for a couple of months, but I didn't play any remarkable games.
Age of Empires (PC). The game that got me into PC gaming. My father bought a PC for job purposes. I grew up playing solid tittles as Unreal Tournament, Quake II, Starcraft, Pharaoh, Civilization III, but man, I played Age of Empires a hell of a lot. The gameplay was extremely fun, and it was so difficult for me as a child that the game last me months. Then my parents bought me the Collectors Edition with AoE 1 & 2 and the expanssions. I remeber studying the booklet with the trades of each civilization while I was in the beach. I probably played AoE II the whole year.
Final Fantasy VIII (PS1). I got the PS1 at the end of its life cycle, and I had troubled finding games in the local stores. FF8 is the game that bough me into RPGs and I totally love it (I didn't play FF7) I spend more than 100 hours and the playtime counter turned red. Great story, interesting characters, fun combat system, amazing BSO, I learnt what grinding was... ¡and I enjoy it! After playing this game, most of the others games seemed to lack depth.
Fable (Xbox). While all my friends were bragging about his PS2 and talking shit about the big black box, I ask my parents for the latter in christmas. Most of my console gaming memories are attached to it. The graphics were freaking awesome and buying was the right choice, even though my friends kinda despised me for that. Fable was the 3rd game I had. I love the epicness, the music, the humor... and the charming atmosphere. Although it felt incomplete. Then The Lost Chapters expanssion came out and playing again with all tied up was very satisfying. I still have the Anniversary Edition in my backllog, but it seems like they remove the cartoony design that characterizes it.
Gothic II (PC). For my, this is the best game of the best saga of RPGs (1, 2, & 3). A total hidden gem. The world seems perfectly tailored and the open world is amazing. I was totally sucked into its atmosphere... The character developement is challenging but rewarding. You can easily die fighting the first monsters and the are no annoying level scaling. This game was able to make me feel like I was the character of the game, and I think that is the biggest achievement for any RPG.

I was a PC and Xbox child.

Pac-Man: It may not have been my favorite game of the time but is by far the most iconic. My sixth birthday cake was a Pac-Man cake. One of my favorite records growing up was a Pac-Man picture disc. Pac-Man was everywhere TV, Radio, Books, Magazines, Toys, canned foods, cereal boxes, watches, clocks, you name it. Pac-Man was the universal symbol of video games throughout the 80s.

Dragon's Lair: From the first time I saw Dragon's Lair at Chuck E Cheese I was changed. The sights and sounds of Dragon's Lair were so fa beyond anything else at the time that the equivalent jump today would have to be some Matrix like neural jack or a Star Trek style Holodeck. Because going from crude stick figures and still more than a few black & white games, not to mention the electro mechanicals that were still hanging around to a Disney quality interactive movie was mind blowing. It's hard to put into words what this did to open the mind to never before considered gaming potential. ironically, due to the astronomical 50 cent per credit price I rarely played it in the Arcade but I've bought nearly every home version that I have had a system for over the years. Getting Don Bluth to sign a Dragon's Lair art book a few years ago was so overwhelming an experience I sadly found myself speechless the one chance I'll likely ever have to thank him.

The Legend of Zelda: Adventure of Link: Forget the plumber, the vampire slayer, the little robot who could and the brain killing space lady, I bought my NES specifically for Link. Between this and the original Legend of Zelda the rest of the NES library was nothing more than filler.

Rampage/Bubble Bobble: These two go together. At least once a week for a couple of years my friends an I would bicycle down a local pizza place and play these two games. There were often four of us so at least one of us was on Bubble Bobble while 2-3 others were on Rampage and we would cycle out as we died to keep both games going. Since the games were for pizza patrons we adopted more than one unsuspecting pair of diners as family on the rare occasions we were questioned. Occasionally one of us would buy a slice if that looked unlikely to work.

Aladdin (Mega Drive)
- I got the console bundle for Christmas, and even the artwork alone used to keep me captivated, but the game itself is an airtight performance on the Sega system. I sincerely hope it gets remade or even just sharply ported.

Alex Kidd in Miracle World (Master System)
- the pack-in game on the Master System II that I got for Christmas, which served as my first introduction to home gaming. The vibrant colours, fast and varied gameplay and difficulty had me spending hours on this. Operation Wolf was the other MS-defining game for me, but there are more iconic games that eclipsed it later.

Donkey Kong Country (SNES)
- I remember not quite believing how good this looked, it sure was and still is a real looker. The water level, it's music and sense of depth with the rippling sand, fluid controls and the pingo-stick nose attack would be one highlight; the turquoise lit treetop level being my very favourite; and the first level's sunset sealing the initial burst of excitement with the promise of more to come. Diddy's Kong Quest cranked it up even further on every level, but this was my first SNES game and what a beginning.

Super Mario Kart (SNES)
- even before I had a SNES, the Mario iconography always fascinated me, and I even had a Merlin sticker album that I completed. This is simply a classic - as close to perfection as the hardware's capabilities could allow, the squelchy intro music and relative novelty of such an accessible concept and design still captures my imagination to this day. What needed done was the 3DS to gave shown one half on its top screen and the top-down map on the bottom screen. Nintendo's next chance to give this game a definitive version years later would be if on Switch it has both online functionality and new racers added (can you imagine a 16-bit sprite for the likes of Rosalina and Wario?) This game could be far from over yet - here's hoping.

Wave Race 64 (N64)
- the stunning water effects, a dreamy and buoyant motion like a potion of polygons, was a pleasing sensation that even modern jet-ski racers are still in the turbulent trail of. My grudge against the GameCube sequel is only paused temporarily for the fact that Aspen Lake still looked utterly gorgeous. Drake Lake's fog clearing to reveal the mirror like stillness remains one of my favoirite gaming experiences to this day. The more energetic waves, rising sea levels and acrobatics elsewhere combine a thrilling charge with a finesse that the sequel sadly forgot about.

Good question, but tough to answer...

1. Q*Bert (Arcade) - The first game I remember becoming obsessed with, and getting really good at. It’s still my favorite game ever.

2. TMNT (Arcade) -  I played the hell out of this at the bowling alley while my parents were doing league bowling. Currently my second favorite game ever.

3. Super Mario Bros (NES) - It blew me away the first time someone showed it to me. It demonstrated the direction home video games were going, and prompted me to get an NES.

4. Final Fantasy II (IV) (SNES) - After I decided I hated Final Fantasy I on NES and that RPGs weren’t for me, I enjoyed this game so much it brought me back to the genre.

5. Street Fighter II (SNES) - The graphics and animation of the arcade version were mind-blowing at the time, and it became one of my most anticipated home console releases. It got me into the fighting game genre (not that I’m any good, I suck against other players, but I enjoy learning all the characters and beating the AI)

Final Fantasy VIII - The first game which really opened my eyes to narrative within gaming. I remember borrowing my brothers friends copy for the day and played it non-stop. It was just a very compelling experience and one I still hold fondly.
Mickey Mouse & Donald Duck: World of Illusion - Certainly a comfort game, one that I just remember playing often single or two player.
Shenmue - I remember buying a pre-owned Dreamcast after it tanked just for this game! & Boy was it worth it. Still to this day I find Dobuita one of the most richly detailed environments in gaming.
Tekken 3 - I would play Survival Mode endless amount of times, best score was 103 Wins.
Crash Team Racing - Many fond memories of 4-player Cup Tournaments that lasted beyond midnight!

Wow, I never noticed this topic. There's plenty to choose from for me, but it wasn’t difficult to come up with a list of just five.

In no particular order:

Mega Man X (SNES) - Love this game; it was the first one (alongside Operation C) that I bought with my own money.
Pokémon Red Version (GB) - The main culprit of my obsession with Pokémon.
Final Fantasy VII (PS1) - The first game I owned on the PS1, as well as the first RPG I played knowing what the genre was.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Turtles in Time (Arcade) - I spent a good portion of my childhood playing this game.
The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening (GB) - I would spend countless hours playing this game, especially at school during recess. I had a friend who had already beaten it, so he would usually help me out, especially when finding heart pieces.

Obligatory honorable mentions:

StarFox (SNES)
Super Mario Land: 6 Golden Coins (GB)
X-Men vs. Street Fighter (Arcade)
The Simpsons (Arcade)
Pokémon Gold Version (GBC)

I have great memories playing these games.

Starting with earliest:

Melee
Ratchet Deadlocked
WoW
Rock Band 2
COD: MW

I still play Melee to  this day, I am not sure if I put more hours into Melee or Brawl as a kid I would have to check but I don't have all my memory cards I don't think. I looked forward to R&C Online every day after school but I think I played Deadlocked more than UYA. Never hit max in Vanilla but did in TBC, and is still probably my biggest game time sink all together although I don't play on live servers any more. Guitar Hero  1-3 and the first two Rock Bands I think fucked my hands up but definitely introduced me to a lot of school music and helped start to shape my taste. I think I played MW2 more than the first but the first is too good.

I would like to think more about this in case I am forgetting.

1.Super Mario 64 tied with Super Mario World.
2. Kingdom Hearts
3. Mike Tyson's Punchout
4. Marvel Vs Capcom 2
5. EarthBound

Not sure why I lied on this list.  Why did you lie me?  I don't play Earthbound much as a kid.   This doesn't fit my real childhood at all and I should feel shame.

The real list is.

1. GTA Vice City
2. Ratchet and Clank Up Your Arsonal
3. Call of Duty World at War
4. Super Mario 64
5. Kingdom Hearts or Gran Turismo 4

I am sorry for lying.  I don't rememnber typing what I typed.  I assume it was when I was captured in my sleep.  I only remember the darkness of night and blue lights.  I was intertrapped in the earth's gravity, engines stalled and failed, crashed into a crop maze.  but then I woke.  And their were plenty of government agents working for COMM 12.  Disquised as Syrpents under the blood moon hissing in my ear.  bloody pillows.  I begged them not to. I assume they like earthbound because they made the game.  But that was of course back when I still had my apendix that they ate.

I’m defining childhood as anything up to around the time I started my teen years, FWIW.

King’s Quest (Apple IIe) - not my oldest gaming memory but probably the first with any lasting impact. Started a love affair with (then) PC gaming and the adventure genre.

Super Mario Bros (NES). - it only brought me back to consoles after I dismissed Ataris and Colecovisions (as a haughty 8-9 year old) as pure crap. No big deal.

Ultima VI: The False Prophet (MS-DOS) - I stupidly didn’t get into the earlier Ultimas “because graphics” (hey, I was a stupid kid), but when I finally did, my God. There are still few RPGs that understand the “R” part better than this game.

Blazing Lazers (TG-16) - Every vertically scrolling shooter has to meet the expectations firmly set in my brain by this one. I can still hear the first stage soundtrack clearly (and I haven’t owned or played a TG-16 in nearly 30 years).

Phantasy Star II (Gen). Best JRPG ever. Then, and now. It holds up. Fight me.
