Well, lets do this. For the 3rd year in a row, its time to start the Santa thread. Im wanting to start early because of a few reasons. First, DQ heroes comes out in 4 days and Im going to be way engrossed in that game and dont want to disappoint and start too late. Second, for the first 2 weeks of November, Im going on a vacation and wont be here at all. And lastly, I want to give people time to post and sign up and discuss spending limits and what not. Im going to copy the list from the interest thread I started a little while back. If you want to add your name to the list, post on here. If you want to be removed, do the same. Im going to suggest that the spending limit be $50 (that includes shipping). Its a bit higher than normal so if thats too much for people, post a suggestion. Here we go ! SIGN UPS ARE CLOSED!!! E-mails are out. You will have the entire month of November to buy for your person and update me with an email as to when your item has shipped and tracking info if possible.

Normally, I would object to the 50 dollar limit. However, having gone through the SS last year and having a blast, I'm fine with that price tag.
Someone should post the thread from last year. Not only can you see everything that everyone got, but you can also watch my evolution from cynical to grateful.

I think 50 is good. Looking at old threads lower limits are fine but you really need to know where to look or what to get if you're limiting the money. Having a $50 limit gives everyone a little bit of leeway.

I can't stand them, but I think argyle raves about the vanilla ones.
I think Tootsie Rolls are like the Wal-Mart of candies and are better used as slingshot ammo than as sustenance. Jolly Ranchers, on the other hand...look out.

I was really tempted to put some console requests on my wishlist because I don't even own any console older than the PS1 :o I ended up just putting games on my wishlist but if my Secret Santa wants to send me a Super Nintendo I will be just as thankful haha ;)

This is my first year in the VG secret santa and I was wondering if you get to find out who your secret santa was after you receive your gift? Or does it stay a mystery? :-X
Also, if we've decided on a 50 dollar spending limit, does that mean 50 dollar on the games alone, or does that include the shipping price? Thanks All :)

Generally people put their name with return address on the package... especially when usps jacks things up so often.
In this case, you would know who sent it to you.
On the other hand, some people opt to just do their address and no name.
Also, according to the first post, yes that $50 does include shipping.

No, but I've had them give me weird ass looks when I try to file an insurance claim on a package with weird names on them.

I guess some people still need to send in their wishlists before we start; there's about 8 people who haven't as of now.

Wednesday morning I will remove the people that havent sent me their info and will pair up the people and send messages to everyone with their recipients.

The sooner we start, the sooner a bunch of folks will be getting their stuff. I know there are a few of us on here that are very prompt and efficient when it comes to sending gifts.

Also some people may just need more time to search for something because they have a busy schedule or they're trying to track down a hard to find item. Sooner certainly doesn't hurt :D

I know they've definitely given me a hard time if I don't know the recipient's name.
But usually I send the package with the person's real name but in the return address section, I'll put my address only. Sometimes I'll write VGC Secret Santa so they know what it might be. If the post office demands your name, folks here will probably only know you by your username anyway ;)
I put my username inside the gift package because I'd rather they find out who the Secret Santa is when they finally open it, whether that be when they receive it or on whatever day they decide to open it.
I personally like to wait until Christmas morning to find out what's in the gift and who sent it to me. In my wishlist, I'll probably ask the person to put their username inside the box so their identity doesn't get spoiled ;D

Trust me most won't be able to wait for one reason or another. either by being impatience or USPS crushing/indenting your box and you then have to open it to make sure the content is alright

Been at work all day. One of those people with the red names has sent me his wishlist but forgot the mailing info. Ill get that adjusted. Im sadly going to have to delete the other person as I have sent 2 emails already and given plenty of time.

This year I decided not to pair up all non US residents with other non US residents. If you got a person who is in another country, an option is to get your seller online (if thats how you intend to shop) to ship the item themselves to your recipient. It would also add even more mystery as to who the Santa is too!

I did a mystery box with a buddy in canada, He sent me some ketchup chips, all dressed up chips, a few wonderballs, and some other stuff.
I sent him some stuff local to me. Mexican candy, Cajun crawfish chips, voodoo chips. There were a few other things I wanted to throw in, but international shipping costs a bit. Was gonna throw in a box of Cookie crisps because he always wanted to try that, and I was gonna throw in a bottle of Big Red soda. I don't really care for the drink, but it's a local drink mostly.
I might throw some goodies in the box, but I don't want to pump the weight of the box because then shipping gets ridiculous.

The cinnamon fish I was talking about are sold in bulk and I've never seen a name on them :( They are not the same as Swedish fish, though. It's hard candy that basically tastes like cinnamon and is shaped like a fish.

From what I've read, they put a special sort of batter that fries super fast around the ice cream, and then they have to fry it for a very short time (like 5 seconds tops), so that the outing is hot and crispy, and the center is still cold and delicious.

Damn, you guys and gals are on the money! I'm so excited to see so many people that have their stuff together. It's going to be a busy weekend, so I doubt I'll get my SS any gifts yet.
That said, next week I'll be in Cleveland and will be heading to one of my favorite game stores. I'll be buying some stuff for myself (of course) and I will be buying as much as I can for my giftee. I have this vision for a themed Christmas package that I think will be fun.

Visited three game shops and a thrift store today and only managed to find one incomplete copy of one game for my giftee going for $20 more than a new copy on Amazon. Surprising, considering most of the games on their wishlist are common current-gen titles. Guess I'll have to do what I do best and order online. I did find some non-Secret Santa Christmas gifts (and a couple games for myself ;)), so it's not like it's a total loss.
I'm also more than likely going to go over the $50 limit. Oh well. It's the holidays!

Gah, one of the games I had found (called an EB Games to ask if they had it in stock) turned out to be in bad condition when I got there, so I'm down to only one found. More searching is in order!

Got my items! Glad to find them out in a store early and not have to find them online!! I'll be a bit over the $50 too, the way I've always seen it though it as a floor, as in you should expect to get or give $50 worth of stuff and anything above that is an extra as long as its not too excessive.

Yeah, shipping prices (if that's what you were talking about) is kind of the unexpected evil twist in the plot of the story. ??? I'm sure to bust the limit because of the shipping, but I wouldn't want my giftee to suffer a smaller gift because Canada Posts' rates suck. ::)

Does Canada post have something like a fixed rate box? USPS has some boxes that you can fill up with whatever weight and the shipping is still the same. Will include insurance, too, usually, which is handy.

For those in Canada, if you live close enough to the border, you could always take a day drive into the states and save yourself a good chunk on shipping if you are shipping to the US.
If anyone is interested, I can put together a little post with some helpful information to save yourself money with shipping. It mostly only applies to shipping within the US, but I can include some info about shipping internationally from inside the US.

I think I'm pretty much done for my SS.
Picked up a game a few days ago.
Made a trade and coincidentally one of the filler games I forgot I traded for is on their list... I say filler, it's kind of pricey, I just wanted to get rid of my trades.
Bought something online, should get here in a few days.
And my wife is making a little arts and craft thing.
As light as all of this might be, shipping might be low enough that I'll feel like I have to go out and get another item to throw in.

Normally we didn't start this early so if you posted that you sent it out there would be a few people who also sent theirs out the day before, that day, or the next day so you really couldn't tell due to the postal service and the different times it took to send a package to it's destination. also you don't need to say when it shipped you can say it either a couple days or a week before/after if you want to throw people off your scent.

Thanks! I'm feeling better today. Yesterday was Veteran's Day, so we had the day off from work in honor of it. It gave me plenty of time to rest up and allowed me to finish Haunting Ground.

I haven't been around as much these past 2 weeks because, without entering into details, the company I work for might go bankrupt if things don't go well enough for the rest of the year. Since we want to keep our job, we're working a lot, and the anxiety is killing me. Every night when I get home, I'm just out of energy and can barely even play video games.

I'm right there with you regarding work. Yesterday, I was pulled to the side and told that my duties would be shifted. It was either adapt or leave. While the new duties aren't necessarily a bad thing, my problem comes with having to deal with a more rigid schedule. Usually, I get into the office around 7:00 AM. Now, I have to get in at 8:00 AM. While it does mean I can use this extra hour to work out in the morning instead of the afternoon, the fact that I have to follow such rigid guide lines and no longer have the flexibility I'm used to is a pain. In some ways, I find it insulting.
Have you already done the standard resume/CV updates? I know the last thing you want to do after a long day of work is do more stuff related to work, but taking a few moments to polish that bad-boy up will hopefully help in some way. Try not to work yourself too hard, either. Seriously, I did that once and it put me in the hospital. This was years ago when I was working in science labs, but still, it's not worth your physical/mental health.
I hope the job situation works out for you. Pretty girls like you should never frown!

I did update my resume recently to apply on a 1-month week-end job for Nintendo (for which I never got any answer in the end, now that I think about it :o). Honestly I've been wanting to look for a new job for a while, but I still don't know what I'd like to do yet. This could just be the kick in the butt that I needed to truly make some research and find what I want to do :) I did make way more progress in that regard in the last week than I did in the previous month, so there's definitely that.

Hide it :) My personal best-working trick haha. If you're afraid you'll forget about it somehow, set a reminder on Google Calendar for Christmas day with the location. It doesn't need to be impossible to find either: Out of sight, out of mind is definitely enough. I usually put stuff on corner of shelves where I look less often.

Yep, up to you, though I did and my SS did for me as well.
I liked to do it so that they could open up the regular box to make sure it wasn't something from someone else (or something they ordered).
I think the first year, I did it and Turf held back for like two hours from opening it after receiving it ::)
Also, I like to put my gift from SS under the tree, and a wrapped present is nice instead of a mailing box :D

As far as generally opening the gifts, there is no set rule on how its done. If you want to open them when you get them, thats cool. I plan to open mine cause I have the patience of a toddler when it comes to boxes in my house.
Video recording of openings is cool but not mandatory.

I think in 2013 we had a "reveal" thread, so it's similar to that, I'm assuming :) If anything, possibly not everyone posted in the reveal thread, so it left some Secret Santas wondering what their recipient thought...

Haha, I know it's tempting. I like to be surprised, but honestly, even if you knew who got you your gifts, you'll still be surprised by what may have been sent!

Or you could have an interest in becoming a drag queen and having your drag mother give you a name.
Or you could just be creative and think of one for yourself.

I've had post offices make me write my real name before trying to ship something out with an online name. They usually are worried that you're writing an incorrect return address/etc. and something may go wrong with your package.

DR2 is similar to the first one, so I think you'll enjoy that. I haven't had the chance to try that third-person shooter side story. I can't recall the name, but I've heard mixed opinions on it.
