I ordered my cards yesterday. I heard there was another single card inside of a magazine too. Ill have to go find that.

Ordered mine.

I heard about Game Informer having a card in it as well (the one with ACIII on the cover), but I tend to not buy gaming magazines anymore...

Ordered! I haven't signed into my Nintendo account in so long. The default address was a place I lived 5+ years ago.

Yeah, I got my issue of Game Informer last week and found the card stuck inside whilst reading on the way to the GDC awards - forgot to mention it to the forum!

I don't know how much the issue costs individually, but the annual membership fee is $15.

Is that magazine something that you can find on a rack in Wal-mart or something?

Ordered a set.

What, Club Nintendo? It's a program that entices you to register your Nintendo games and consoles in exchange for "coins" that you can redeem for some nifty things.

I think @soera means the Game Informer.  It comes with a pro membership at Gamestop; I'm pretty sure nowhere else sells it.  I've seen the issues at Gamestop so I'm wondering if individual copies can be bought or if they can only give you one when you sign up for a pro account.

Missed that reply, now it all makes sense. Lol

I've only seen it at GameStop.

ya it's a GameStop only mag. I need to go there and see if I can get one, I never recieved this month's issue...

ya... I need to read it too. But I don't think I've cracked one open since... 6 months ago?

I'm not sure if the mag is even available in Canada for subscription but I doubt that I would read it if I got it.... of course now that I know it has a card I want it lol ;D

Hm, that's a good question.  If you find you can't get a copy, I can check with my local shop to see what's the deal with their loose issues.

I'm pretty sure you can buy loose copies from the store.

What exactly are the cards for? Its not for the general play of the game Im hoping cause if it is, Im going to reconsider buying it. I really dont enjoy too much of those. I have a hyper scan with the Xmen game and about 20 of those packs. Its just a pain!

It's not for the main game or the online, it seems to be some sort of side-game that uses the cards (as far as I've heard... I try to keep away from information about games I'm hyped for as much as I can, it's just better that way IMO).
Title: Re: Free Kid Icarus AR cards!
Post by: soera on March 15, 2012, 01:11:52 pm
Well, good. So its not something I must have. I have checked ebay already for some of those cards and the prices people are asking are insane. I will have the free one from the magazine, the free ones from club nintendo and whatever comes with the game and that will be enough for moi.

I used to play Everquest for years ... they eventually implemented a side card game which got really expensive. I really dont like that aspect of gaming.

@soera, whatever you do don't buy a Skylander!
Title: Re: Free Kid Icarus AR cards!
Post by: amauriel on March 15, 2012, 02:03:05 pm
@jcalder8: Doesn't matter of @soera gets Skylanders or not, there's no chance of finding the figures in stores (at least around me) right now anyway. Haven't actually seen one on the shelf in probably a month, and I check every place I enter and make special trips on top of it...no figures means no money spent, and Activision isn't doing much to help at the moment with demand anyway.
Title: Re: Free Kid Icarus AR cards!
Post by: scott on March 15, 2012, 02:26:16 pm
I've heard Skylanders is pretty good, but I refuse to get into it. There's too many figures and I'd be on a crazy manhunt for them all. Bad enough I spend so much time farming Pokemon.
Title: Re: Free Kid Icarus AR cards!
Post by: soera on March 15, 2012, 02:34:18 pm
You had to mention Skylanders ... every day when my 3yo wakes up, thats what he tells me he wants. Skylanders ... ugh. I almost broke down and picked up a set on craigslist that had the full game and 6 figures for $35 but lord knows the moment that happens, hes going to want every character.
Title: Re: Free Kid Icarus AR cards!
Post by: amauriel on March 15, 2012, 04:32:16 pm
Yup yup. I wanted it when it came out, my husband knows of my addictive personality toward such things and refused.

Then he went to his sister's house, and my nephew wanted to show him the new game he got...Skylanders.  As soon as Kaos talked and my husband recognized it as the voice of Invader Zim (Richard Steven Horvitz), he caved. I'm sure he's regretting it now... ;)

The worst thing about Skylanders (besides not being able to find any of them) is that they are releasing the figures in waves. So even though the game came out back in October, there are still quite a few figures not available. Then they haven't announced any solid release dates for the new waves. It's pretty much one huge cluster, if ya know what I mean.
Title: Re: Free Kid Icarus AR cards!
Post by: jcalder8 on March 15, 2012, 08:25:40 pm
@amauriel, I know what you mean. I only found out that they had released the next wave when they showed up on kijiji for double the price

I assume these work like the other AR cards that come with the 3DS.  There's probably a feature within the game that lets you use the cameras on your 3DS with the cards on a table or something.

I wouldn't be surprised if we could just scan the cards and send them to others to print them up in color and have they do the same thing (much like the question mark AR card that folks scanned and printed huge).

I don't know about anyone else, but I got my e-mail from Club Nintendo that the cards have now shipped. My husband and I are taking bets on which will get here first, the cards or the release-day delivery game.

I got my mail confirmation notice a few days ago ... as far as what people are getting, my guess its all the same. Im pretty sure the ones ordered through club nintendo are supposed to be ones unavailable any other way.

Good to know, and glad I started up with Club Nintendo last week. If I go through and add all of my codes I'm pretty sure I'll be at the Platinum level. I started out just putting in my 3DS and my 3DS games and I'm already at gold. I need to go through my DS and Wii games I suppose. These things add up pretty quickly.
Title: Re: Free Kid Icarus AR cards!

I just had to double check my order status, I was relieved to see that they are preparing my order. Odd I didn't get a notice about it though.

Also, I'm like 10 coins away from Platinum status! This will be the 1st year I've ever hit it, having only attained Gold the 2 years previous.

Thier point years are different. Instead of calendar year, they go by fiscal year and points dont roll over. So if you arent close yet, better get the points up before July.

I haven't registered any in about a year and a half but I still don't think I have enough to earn Platinum. I'm just not that big a fan of Nintendo and I buy 99.9% of my games second hand anyway.

Thats my problem. Most actual Nintendo made games are just platformers and Im not terribly interested in them.

With the exception of Yoshi's Island DS, which I recently picked up, I'm not sure when I've last bought a platformer...and I buy tons of games that are Club Nintendo.

Starfox, Zelda, Layton, Nintendogs, Kid Icarus, Animal Crossing, and Pokemon all come to mind. Really, Mario games are the only true platformers they still really promote, I think. Maybe I'm jaded because I'm a Nintendo fangirl.
Title: Re: Free Kid Icarus AR cards!
Post by: soera on March 21, 2012, 12:10:50 pm
I guess my definition of "platformer" is different than yours. To me (and probably me alone) a platformer is one that is based on a mainly publicized character (Mario, Zelda, etc). Most Nintendo based games Ive noticed are based on the same few characters and are mostly geared toward younger crowds. Zelda and Metroid being the only line of games that Nintendo makes that interests me and I lost most interest in those around the N64 time. Im hoping that Kid Icarus is different but my fear is its going to be a totally different game than the first like the way Zelda/Metroid games have changed.
Title: Re: Free Kid Icarus AR cards!
Post by: jobocan on March 21, 2012, 01:49:52 pm
Platformers are games where most of the action revolves around jumping on different types of platforms, hence the term "platformer". See: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_platform_game_series (note: this list includes a few games that aren't platformers, like Bebe's Kids and Golden Axe)

Yeah I understand the definition. I just view the word differently. Those to me I consider side scrollers.

*EDIT* Lol just clicked on your link and side scroller was mentioned.

Yeah, side-scroller works too, but it can be misleading, since various shoot 'em ups, beat 'em ups and run n' gun games are also side-scrolling while not being platformers :P

But they dont have the big platform name! (Well, not all)

Mario, Zelda, Sonic, etc ... They are the big "platform" name on which the big companies make their money.
Title: Re: Free Kid Icarus AR cards!
Post by: scott on March 21, 2012, 02:58:23 pm
I think you're confusing platform for first-party.
Title: Re: Free Kid Icarus AR cards!

I havent heard anyone call them first party games but, yes, those are the games Im talking about. :)

Heh, I don't think of characters being platforms.  I think of systems/consoles or floating slabs of land as platforms.

I get what you mean, though, as I used to have the same definition for a while.  But I think of those now as character franchises or series.
Title: Re: Free Kid Icarus AR cards!
Post by: soera on March 21, 2012, 04:03:10 pm
Fair enough. Ive just always associated a lot of systems with a certain line of games. Nintendo is famous for Mario/Zelda, Sega and Sonic/Alex Kidd, TG for Bonk, etc. Those are what Ive considered platformers ... but first party games sounds legitimate too. :)
Title: Re: Free Kid Icarus AR cards!
Post by: darko on March 21, 2012, 05:14:19 pm
Well that's good that you're okay with the entire gaming industry's definition.

How would you classify R-Type, Bust-A-Move, Tetris and Need for Speed?

I think you should change your definition of "Platformer" to "Games I consider mainstream" or "Games I don't care about because they're not RPGs".

:)

Soera and I are hanging out on Saturday. I'll be sure to make him some flash cards!
Title: Re: Free Kid Icarus AR cards!
Post by: soera on March 21, 2012, 05:50:13 pm
Ha .. ha .. ha.

As far as the games you mentioned, R-Type : shooter, Bust-A-Move : puzzle, Tetris : also puzzle, Need for Speed : driving

I think they all fit under the "Games I dont care about because they are not RPGs" however!

And to get back on topic, Nintendo tweeted that they may be out of the free cards being given away through Club Nintendo.  So if you got a shipping notification, awesome!

They also updated the KI site with info about more cards...  It's a good thing I'm not planning on getting the game yet - I'd be going all over trying to track down those things.

WHOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!! They're giving them out at PAX East! That means I'm going to have to try to hit the expo hall earlier than I'd expected.

Also, now that I'm thinking about Nintendo and cards, I'm immediately reminded of the eReader and the Animal Crossing cards. I bought so many of those things...not sure where they even are now.

Oh, looks like there's a PAX Dev, now, too.  I'm definitely going to try to get up there for PAX Prime, but I realize that I may still be recovering from jaw surgery and might not be in the best shape for Expo-ing.

PAX is pretty much what E3 used to be, but open to the public. The first year they did what is now PAX Prime in Seattle, the tagline was something like "Spend the weekend with 30,000 of your best friends". Although PAX East is closer to 70,000, it remains true.

There are panels with developers, and an expo hall to try out new games (the big demo lines last year were for Portal 2, Duke Nukem Forever, Battlefield 3, the 3DS, and SWTOR, for example). There's an arcade room, a LAN party with 300 people, an area for tabletop gaming, and a handheld hallway, where you can just drag a bean bag chair over to a new group of people and have a Mario Kart race or battle Pokemon.

Even in line for the panels last year, I had fun. People in front of or behind me would be playing some card game and just ask if others wanted to join in. Or they'd have their DS out and be sending messages out on Pictochat.

I know it sounds like an idealistic place, and I am glorifying it a bit, but waiting for the Keynote speech to start last year, I pulled out my DS and Pokemon White (which had only been out about 2 weeks at that time). I turned it on and told my husband that I was going to see if there was anyone else to connect to for the survey mini-game. He laughed at me...until I immediately connected with 140 other people, just in the Keynote theater. It's safe to say you do feel like you're among friends.

Also, I wouldn't mind making a trip to PAX eventually. Especially if I had a group of friends to go with, hmm. I should twist Matt's arm into going.

My copy of Kid Icarus just shipped as well, and my AR cards from Club Nintendo shipped yesterday too. Can't wait to play this.

As for PAX, I'll try going next year, especially if Powerglove go there again (maybe they'll even have a new album out by that time!). I know I'll be able to take days off for that and money will definitely not be an issue by then (not like it is now, but it was when the tickets were on sale).
