Title: PS4 Pro announced
Post by: ignition365 on September 07, 2016, 03:47:05 pm
The 4K model of PS4 has been officially announced and it's $399 out on November 10th, 2016.

Its GPU is twice as strong as PlayStation 4. The console is using AMD Poralis and comes with HDR and 4K support.  Previously released games will get support to enable 4K for PS4 Pro.  Specifically named Black Ops 3 at least.

Netflix and Youtube will release 4K enabled apps for PS4 Pro by the end of the year.  Netflix will have over 600 hours of 4k enabled content by the end of the year.

The PS4 Pro will not support Ultra HD Blu-rays.  It will only support 4k streaming through apps.

PS4 Slim should be arriving in stores starting Sept. 14th.  Priced at $299.

All PS4 models (Launch to present) will receive a firmware update to enable HDR.  I believe by next week.

Dang, beat me to it lol

Crazy that it's coming out this year.  It looks awful in design terms to me, just another layer on the old system, but that's a good price.

The bottom of the pro system has the controller button symbols for the feet.  That is so awesome.

I like this! although the general shape is rather lazy but realistically I did not expect them to redesign the outside of the system for the new version so it fits quite well.

It looks like a slice of cake.

I don't have a 4K TV and don't plan on getting one anytime soon, but I'm surprised that it's coming out so soon. November will be here before you know it.

Quite honestly, I think the original version of the system looks better, especially my Darth Vader version but I think the slim looks pretty slick. The PS4K… it looks kind of off, especially those three layers, but I don't play a system because of how it looks. Hell look at the Wii U, one of the lamest designs ever.
The PS4 has a great future ahead of it and I'm glad to be an owner of it.

Just confirmed.  The PS4 Pro will not support Ultra HD Blu-rays.  I believe those are the 4K Blu-rays.

It will only support 4k streaming through apps.

I hate the PS4 design, so this is just like doubling down on an already crap design, but design is unimportant really.  I'm not sure if I'll upgrade or not, as it depends on how much I could get for my current PS4 if I trade it in, but I could cut out a game or two releasing this year to help afford it more easily and it still gives me 4 months between then and the NX release to hopefully afford that.

Just confirmed.  The PS4 Pro will not support Ultra HD Blu-rays.  I believe those are the 4K Blu-rays.

It will only support 4k streaming through apps.

Why would they release a 4K system that doesn't play their own proprietary 4k discs? That makes no sense...I don't really care, I won't be getting a 4k tv for years, but this seems weird.

Sidenote, can I back up my PS4 system on something before I would go trade it in so I don't lose all my saves and such?

Thanks, figured I'd ask first before I go digging, but yup, just a USB storage device or a nice feature is saving to the cloud if I'm a PS+ member at the time.

If I ever find a 1TB or larger internal 2.5" HDD for cheap I plan to do this to upgrade my PS4.

I'll probably pick one up when they release a special edition that I like. Maybe a Kingdom Hearts 3 or FF7 edition system? :)

I didn't get an HD TV until last year. So maybe I'll pick this new PS4 up in about 10 years when I get a 4K TV. :P

Well you don't need a 4K tv, it just benefits if you have one since it's a more powerful system.

They both look underwhelming and missing BR UHD support is just weak.

I am second guessing whether or not I want to buy one now. I wanted the all around 4k support so I could use the PS4 Pro as an entertainment system.

I'm guessing this was done to save on the cost of the system perhaps?  It's weird that Xbox One S supports them, but not Sony's own console.

I mean its not like they couldn't have known since it is a proprietary item sony makes and Microsoft would have to buy the capable drives directly from sony so IDK why its not on the ps4...

There's little incentive to buy one if you don't have a 4K TV, and you already own a current-gen system, though.

Hardware upgrade mostly.  I'm curious how games already released could benefit and if it means games like Horizon Zero Dawn run way better on the Pro, I might be more inclined to get this, since trading in my PS4 could cut the Pro price in half.

Shoot, the PS4 Pro doesn't support Ultra-HD Blu-Rays? Sony's own tech?

i'm tempted but i HATE this practise of releasing new hardware. esp because i just got a ps4 in november.
i don't know, i'm just not fond of it. i know i'll be hating myself for it later when everything is reported 60fps/1080p on that, but i really can't support this practise.

not that it matters, since i am  but one person.

hey! same!

What they're not telling you is that the VRAM is the same speed so there's a huge bottleneck and most of that GPU speed is pissed down the drain.

I'll wait for launch to see what the consensus on it turns out to be unless I can get a real amazing deal on a trade-in beforehand.  Within a certain price range, the upgrade wouldn't be too big of a deal and would be beneficial enough as an upgrade.  As a PC gamer, this isn't unheard of lol

I expect Sony to patch in 4K Blu Ray support close to or shortly after launch if enough people cry about it.

They can't, because wouldn't it be hardware based? Why wouldn't they add it if it was just flipping a switch in the software?

4k blu-ray will not work on a standard blu-ray player. For a system that'supported main selling feature is 4k but can't play 4k blu-rays seems about as ridiculous as a phone not including a 3.5mm headphone jack...which is yet another reason to hate Apple now.

I've been saying it for a while... the 3.5mm headphone jack is holding back some features most companies want to do.  It's not exactly reasonable for everyone to adopt bluetooth headsets/earbuds/headphones (They can be acquired pretty cheap though, I got a nice pair of headphones for about $20.), but it is something manufacturers have been wanting to get rid of for a while now and I'm glad they are starting.

I believe Apple will provide (or more likely sell at a premium) an adapter that will convert from (what is it, lightning?) the power port to 3.5mm.

Physical media is dead. They are wise to not invest in adding that capability.

Pretty sure 4k uses a lot of bandwidth.  Couple that with the US's greatly inferior internet infrastructure and capped bandwidths.

Very hard to kill physical media.

Is Blu-Ray owned by Sony, like CD & DVD is? If so, then I have to agree. Seems strange that Sony wouldn't include that in order to sell more Blu-Rays.

It's pretty silly when your competitor can play the most advanced format that you created on their new console, but you can't on yours.

If it's possible to do it, then they should try to put it in; they need to push and sell their format.

I think the problem isn't about bandwidth or Sony wanting to sell BDs. It is the fact that people aren't buying movies anymore, not in any great numbers. I am sure that it was considered during the design process. Then they run the numbers. If the numbers don't match up, then they don't add that feature.

We can't look at ourselves, or our friends or people we know online as how the entire world is trending. I can't think of anyone else I know personally that actually goes out and buys new movies at retail. Maybe a DVD here or there, but people are not going out and buying new movies. Not like they used to. Those days are done.

It just seems weird to me especially when you consider Sony as a whole includes Sony motion pictures happens to be releasing 4k blu-ray movies isn't going to put a 4k player in their console that they are pushing as a 4k device...

From what I've seen at stores of 4k, it's super nice, I'll get one eventually since it'll be the HD replacement someday, but 4k certainly isn't the selling point on the Pro system.  I still think not having support for their own 4k Blu-Rays is really dumb lol

It's not? Because I see little incentive to upgrade from a normal PS4 if you have no plans on getting a 4K TV.

My bad, should've added "for me" in that, but I think if it's enough of a hardware upgrade and they can show the benefits, I might be interested in this still.

They sold it as a Pro version, for gamers who want an extra edge. Even at 1080p you'd have better frames or better visuals. They opened up saying it was for the more hardcore gamers. The benefits are small, but people who play everyday, it might be worth it for them, even without a 4k tv. The incentive is small for casual gamers, but for hardcore PS4 gamers, it's probably worth it.

That being said, it's definitely marketed towards 4k, they spent half of the presentation explaining what 4K and HDR were. If Sony spends 20-25 minutes presenting technology instead of games, you can bet your ass that they are committing hard to the technology (In this case, 4k)

Nope, I really don't care either. I think everything as it is now is just fine to me. But companies want to suck the money out of us as much as they could...

But anyway, I do plan to get this since I do not have a PS4 yet. Glad I waited, wish I could say the same for XBox One. :/

So far, most of the games they're showing off with ps4 pro builds are focusing on higher resolution ( which varies from 1440p to a possible native 4K), but I haven't seen anything that runs above 30 fps yet compared to their ps4 builds.

A standard Blu Ray player can't play ps4 games either.

Just saying the optical drives in todays game consoles are far from standard.

I don't think it's far fetched to believe Sony could patch in support. For all we know the hardware could already be adequate, only held back by drivers that were not finished in time for the launch announcement.

PS3 had several Blu Ray features patched in after the fact (3D Blu Ray) which many thought would not be possible with the existing hardware. 3D Blu Ray is especially impressive because it requires twice the processing and data bandwidth as normal Blu Ray.

PS4 couldn't even play standard Blu Rays at launch until they released the app several weeks later.
