Title: Two questions about your favorite consoles
Post by: ferraroso on January 06, 2017, 07:58:34 am
For most of my life I've considered the PS1 to be the best gaming console ever...
However after starting to collect for the Master System (and maybe because I was born in Brazil, where the MS was king over the NES) I figured out that it may be my favorite console of all time.

On the other hand, since I've been living in Japan for 6 years now, the Saturn became my favorite console to retro collect.
So, I ask you guys:

1) What is your favorite gaming console ever?
2) What console do you have the most fun collecting for?

I've also been going through phases with consoles. Right now I would have to say:

1) Sega Mega Drive (including the Mega CD)
2) The relatively obscure Amiga CD32 console, where the games are (mostly) crap and rare/expensive as hell :)

I've seen it on the internet sometimes, but I can't say I have ever seen an Amiga with my own eyes (haha)...

And I also think the Mega Drive is an awesome system and, in my opinion, it is the best looking console ever (specially the Japanese model 1 with the huge 16-BIT stamped on it and with the model 1 Mega CD attached to it).

1) Sega Dreamcast - it has the most games I'm interested in, as well as my favorite two games of all times on it (Shenmue and Shenmue 2). It is arguably the system I have the most nostalgia for as well.

2) This actually changes fairly often. I'll get on a collecting kick for a console and it will be at the forefront of what I want for some tme, until I really get into collecting for another console. At the moment though I'd say it is a toss up betwen the Japanese Sega Saturn or the PSP. The Saturn is a system I've loved for a very long time, and I originally got into collecting for it years ago when it was a lot cheaper. Sadly times have changed and it has become expensive to collect for no matter which region you're after. As for the PSP, the games are mostly super cheap, but for whatever reason some of the more sought after games can be hard to track down, at least in the wild.

1) NES - It's where my love for games took off. It's my favorite.  SNES is a close second.  It actually has better games.

2) NES - It was a long road; but after 14 years (I started in 2002) I found every NES game.  It was a long, fun adventure.  It brought me here.  It helped me make lots of friends.  It was so much fun to find stuff for.  Those days are gone.  Now, I don't even buy stuff.  I haven't bought a collectable game in something like 3 months.

1) What is your favorite gaming console ever?
This is a tough one for me. I would want to say at first NES, because of the memories of childhood but I have not played NES really since then. So when I really want to think of it, I will have to say PS2.

2) What console do you have the most fun collecting for?
That would be Sega Genesis.

I can see that many people here love the DreamCast as much as I do!

Maybe because the Master System was such a juggernaut back in Brazil when I was a kid (and in fact, in way, it still is) I've never felt any attachment for the NES (or for Nintendo in general)... So It is very interesting for me to see how gaming culture varies from country to country and how many people around the world have so much love for the NES (a console that I saw for the first time in the late 90's!).
After moving to Japan, I can say that I finally begun to appreciate the Famicom and the Disk System, but Alex Kidd is still much closer to my heart than I think Mario will ever be...

1) SNES is my favorite, with PS2 being very close behind.

2) NES. Growing up, I was always fascinated by the NES. I was born on it's tail end, and because of poor knowledge about it's upkeep, I almost never got a chance to play one. My early daycare had one that never worked, a few people I knew had ones I wasn't able to play much, and I bought one at a garage sale at a young age from a neighbor that I thought was broken and returned because of my poor knowledge of cleaning them then. I grew up with an Intellivision instead until I got an SNES. When I finally was old enough to have some money their was no NES bubble yet so I was able to buy up tons of games for nothing, how I miss those times. All the games where mysterious because I only saw a handful of unique games in my limited experience, and there where so many of them! So, I decided to get all I could. Now I am sad when I look back when I saw games like Bubble Bobble 2 & Little Samson and thought that $50 was WAY too much...

what are you doing???? SNES is out there waiting for a complete library in your house! lol.

1) SNES it is what I grew up on and in my opinion has the best/funest games of any console

2) Playstation 2 there are just soooooo many games for this console that finding them all is going to be a fun decade or 2. plus every time I look for the randomest game ever it is on ps2.

The PS2 is a nearly endless pool of awesomeness. I am at nearly 400 games and I'm still not close to being done wanting games on that system. It has so many gems and great titles, you could game only on it for your whole life and be completely satisfied :)

I consider the PS1 to be probably the best pure RPG console ever too. And I have a complete NTSC US/Canadian Master system collection so I can understand your feelings on that too. However ...

My answer to both questions would have to be the PS4. Everything that the PS1 was, the PS4 has improved on and will continue to pass. The amount of games and the content of the games that will be on there by the end of the consoles life will most likely be untouched by any system ever.

Btw, Im jealous of you living in Japan and would love to go there.

There's a lot of nostalgia for my choice and I know its not the best console, but the N64 is both my choices.  It was the console that I would truly considered "MINE" and some of my favorite games ever are on it.  Sure the controller sucks and it doesn't have a big library, but I kinda love everything about it in design, the cartridges, the boxes.

If I was abit more objective, I'd probably say Playstation 2, but there's something I'm always gonna love about N64.

Also, hey! Hook me up with some cheap Godzilla figures from over there! lol

My choices are based purely on nostalgia.

1 - SNES.

2 - N64.

So many memories, so many games I was so hyped to play back then. As much as I enjoy any console nowadays, I know I'll never really feel that way again.

I am not one of those overly nostalgic guys who thinks that everything was better in the past, but, although owning the system since it's launch, I don't think the PS4 has (nor has it the potential to have) a very good library... In fact, I would say that unfortunately it is on the way to be the worst Sony console ever in my understanding... So, I would love to hear from you what makes you like it so much.
Oh! And if you happen to be in Japan someday or need something from here, just let me know! It is far from the best place in the world to collect for the Master System and Mega Drive, but it is great for almost everything else!

Also, hey! Hook me up with some cheap Godzilla figures from over there! lol

Haha! Godzilla figures and memorabilia can be found in abundance and almost for free around here. If you are looking for any particular stuff, I can check it for you.

I've seen the videos, I'm so jealous of hobbyists in Japan lol.  Some stuff has been okay here, I've bought some of those NECA figures which are around 20 bucks each, I got the 8-bit paintjob one, but Shin Godzilla stuff is impossible to find at a reasonable price.  Maybe more will show up around the home video release, but I've seen so much Shin Godzilla stuff over there and very little comes here or there are even places to get it at.  I can't make it to most conventions so I can't check there and import stuff is pricey from dealers.  I might keep it in mind if you are offering to take a look and I find one I really want as I just need to find one particularly good Shin Godzilla to get lol

1) The Wii. My very first home console, and still tons of fun to play. Nowadays I may rarely play on it, with the Wii U, my new gaming laptop, and even a bit of 3DS kind of taking over, but the infinite amount of fun I had with the Wii puts it at my absolute number one.
2) The DS. My very first handheld console. I know this may seem very biased, but I do think DS is the most fun to collect for. Keep in mind, I only collect for a few consoles (DS, Wii, and preparing for 3DS and Wii U), but for some reason I just really like collecting DS games the most. Maybe it's the huge variety of games that came out for it, or just my nostalgia towards those cheap 3rd party DS-quality 3D models, but DS games have a charm I can't deny, and I love collecting them.

1. Sega Genesis with the all of the Add-ons included. The Genesis was my first gaming experience that isn't a computer and I have adored it since I was a child.

2. It is a hard tie between the PlayStation 1 and PlayStation 2 as they both have a exciting and interesting library of games and I have always found the jewel case covers of the Ps1 games give off that late 90's/early millennia PC jewel cases.

1) Gamecube, I love the system to death. I've been fond of it since I received it as a birthday gift. It doesn't have the library that the PS2 does, but I can't help but love the lunchbox.

2) PS2 is so much fun to collect for. It's one of the only console that tips over the 100+ threshold of games I want for a single system. Can't tell you how giddy I've gotten finding a rare/game I really want at a great price.

1) What is your favorite gaming console ever?

That's kinda of a tough one for me. I'd probably have to go with the NES. I still have all my games in box from when I was a kid. And still play that thing on almost daily basis. And pick up games when I can find them cheap.

2) What console do you have the most fun collecting for?
I kinda take a shotgun approach to my collecting but I honestly always go after the mint Dreamcast games whenever I get a chance. I remember buying my DC brand new off the shelf and my friends going seriously ya brought a dreamcast. I love it's crazy library and hope one day to have every game made for it in America.

What is your favorite gaming console ever?
Sega Saturn

What console do you have the most fun collecting for?
PC Engine DUO-R

Growing up my first video game system was NES in the early nineties, I enjoyed playing the countless of stand-out titles eventually moving on to SNES which I considered the best gaming console ever for many years (and still do, I would say tied first) I greatly anticipated the release of NA Sega Saturn which was my first SEGA system to own. Around the early 2000s I decided to re-visit Saturn's JPN library which solidified my opinion on my favorite gaming console ever.

The past five years I've enjoyed playing games on systems I missed out on during the original release, Mega Drive, Mega-CD, PC Engine, and PC Engine CD software to be specific.

In my case, the PC Engine is a close second to the Saturn in the subject of having fun collecting. Both have some pretty expensive games, but since non-gamers usually don't know anything about them it is relatively easy to find good deals at recycle shops and Hard-Offs in Japan.

1) I have no idea... I'd say its a four-way tie between SNES, PS2, N64, and Gamecube.
All four of these I have spent much time playing on, and I don't think I could definitely say I like one more than the other.

2)At the moment, SNES and PS3.
I try to get complete PS3 games but don't bother with SNES games because I don't have $150+ to shell out on CIB games. SFC games are an entirely different story though... Since they're so much cheaper (Usually) I tend to buy CIB SFC games.

1) I really don't know for sure. I may have to agree with PS1. But then I'm also in love with the PS Vita. I'll say favourite home console is PS1, favourite handheld Vita. That'll make things easier.

2) It's really hard to say, I sort of go through different moods for collecting for different consoles. Maybe Vita? Finding new games I'm interested in for it is always a great feeling. I think Saturn will be really interesting to collect for when I become fluent in Japanese too, since the number of good Japanese games compared to good English games on it is notoriously huge. I've already got a few on it that seem interesting, it'll be awesome to discover what else is out there.

I totally misread this question as "what are your two favorite gaming consoles".

I dunno. I've had fun game hunting for all sorts of consoles. Any console where's there is a ton of variety, and the games are relatively easy to come by.

1. My favorite gaming console ever is the PlayStation 2. It was the first console that I bought with my own money, so it was truly "my" console. The day I bought it, I didn't realize just how many gaming possibilities opened up to me. The RPG library is massive, but there are so many other great genres on it. I feel like each day I go searching for a new game to buy, I always find something I never heard of and it's on the PS2.

2. Again, the PlayStation 2 is the winner. I have no desire to collect every game for it, but I can see myself getting pretty close due to how much I adore the console.

What is your favorite gaming console ever?: Without a doubt the NES even when it wasn't the first that I ever played because that was the ATARI 2600 it was the first that took my life/time away  ;D
What console do you have the most fun collecting for?: Same as above even when am not planning to have all of them (this isn't Pokemon) want to have all those titles that enjoyed when I had hair at my head.

NES, to both questions.

Though I must admit, my modern consoles like my Wii U, XBox One, and Wii get more use simply for the apps (as well as the games).

Favorite Console: Atari 2600 (Handheld would be Lynx)

It may not be powerful and its games may not have much in the way of story (unless you read the instruction manuals or DC Comic books that came with  them) and often those stories were seemingly unrelated to gameplay. But from a technical standpoint of what developers were able to get out of the console between 1977 and 1991, not to mention modern homebrew, is astounding. Here is a console that was designed to possibly have 20 or so titles over its expected lifetime of a Christmas or two and it had over 700 games made and was in production in three different decades. Entire games that kept me memorized as a kid fit on a 2kb cartridge. Most video game genres and controller styles were developed during this time. It makes a nice snapshot of not just the beginning but also the maturation of home game consoles, even if it wasn't able to fully realize just about any game it attempted to replicate from the arcades.

As for the Lynx, in that you had a handheld with most of the power and capabilities of a the SNES in system that was released a mere month after the original Game Boy and a year (two years in US) ahead of the SNES. With an updated screen the games on this system still look comparable to any 2D handheld from Nintendo. I wanted this system so bad when it came out, instead I got a couple Tiger Electronic handhelds. It wasn't until 2015 that I finally got one and it exceeded expectations.

Most Fun Collecting for: Atari 2600 (and Lynx)

I love walking into a game shop, getting a towering stack of games and being told "that will be $15. Could I get them all in emulation or as ROMs? Sure but where's the fun in that. Getting 40 year old games to run again and introducing them to new generations of gamers is far more fun for me.

As for the Lynx, it has a somewhat limited library and hunting the games down, for a reasonable price (I rarely spend more than $5-$10 for anything on any console that isn't current) is a nice challenge. Plus I love that most clerks have no idea what I'm talking about and the surprise on their faces when I point out that they have what I'm asking for in the store. I've had a few fun discussions about the system with some of those clerks.

With Atari being out of favor with most collectors it makes collecting for the systems that much more fun for me. The games are dirt cheap when I find them, finding them can be a challenge and often takes me out of my local area. Plus more often then not, when I do find something it brings a nostalgic smile to the face of the clerks, be it a game shop, a thrift store or some other random seller as they recognize the Fuji symbol and wax nostalgic about their childhood. This probably won't be the case much longer so I'm enjoying it while I can.

My favorite console, at the moment, would certainly be my 3DS (right, some wouldn't consider it a console). But, wow, just so many good games right now: Bravely Default(s), Fire Emblem(s), now soon to be two of the best Dragon Quests, remasters of the LoZ games I grew up with. Just so much, I can't help but pick it up and play.

With regard to collecting, it's is a three way tie for me: GBA, NES, and GB. The NES, even though I was only about 6 when it was first gaining popularity, remained my favorite console throughout the 90's. Even when I had a SNES and N64 it still got more play time. For whatever reason, getting all of those games is really fun and nostalgic. The GB however, really was my system of choice as a kid. The hours spent playing Kirby and Tetris really bring back fond memories. As I have time to explore now, I'm really finding there are some great hidden (and not so hidden) gems for the GB that are great to play on my GB Player for GCN. with the GBA, I never had one growing up but holy cow there are some great games for this little guy too, and it is just fun to collect the ones that fall into my favorite categories (so many FF remakes...).

1) Favorite console would be Playstation 1 for all the great RPG. SNES is pretty close.

2) Outside the RPG, Im also a big fan on 90s 2d arcade games, and I love to collect anything SNK and NeoGeo. I own a NeoGeo AES, NeoGeo CD and NeoGeo Pocket Color. I can`t afford games anymore the NeoGeo AES except for few early 90s release that are still inexpensive, and I got all the titles I wanted (21 games) for my NeoGeo Pocket Color, so now Im more focus on the NeoGeo CD that I love even with the annoying loading times. I got 28 games (all japanese) so far and two unofficial prototype release.

I also try to get the full Fire Emblem collection (including Japanese release), got right now 9 titles... and my goal is to finish them all someday...completed 6 on 9 so far.

My favorite console ever is the PS2, because it was the first console I bought on my own and the first one that I really started collecting for as a kid.  When my only income was from babysitting and yardwork, I really had to hustle to get the games I wanted to play and I was particularly proud of myself for the library I was able to amass before I became an adult.

With that said, PS1 is my favorite system to collect for.  It was my first system and I believe it has the best library of games out of any system.  I feel also that the PS1 had the perfect balance of technological prowess (for its time) and creative ideas leading to some of the strangest videogames ever.  Some of the awkward 3D graphics don't really work anymore but I think they have a special kind of charm.

I've started to collect SNES and I like that system as well, I hope to expand more into cartridge collecting (NES and Genesis and maybe others) once I finish school and can buy a bigger space to store all of my collection.

My favorite console ever is the PS2  :D    I grew up playing it and it was most of my childhood memories growing up. I love the variety, diversity, and quality of the titles along with it's backwards compatability.  It really dominated that generation imo and that generation was my favorite ever in gaming.  ;D

My favorite system to collect for if you include Amiibos is the 3ds/Wii U family. 3ds in particular.  I am hooked on the Amiibo craze and love collecting them.   :)

But for one console excluding interactive figures I would have to go with PS2 again.  Their is so much depth and variety in the library and a lot of hidden gems.

1) My favorite console of all time has to be the NES. Like many others, it was my introductory home console and the reason I became a video game junkie/collector. The memories this console and it's games have given me will forever be embedded in my psyche.

2) The NES used to be favorite to collect for but lately it has been trumped by the Sega CD for some odd reason. The best games for this console are very good and the bad games are very bad but most of them are just odd and relics of a time when game developers were trying new things. Sure FMV was a fad, but Sega CD did it first!

I have to agree with you! There is just so much fun in collecting for the Mega CD!
Here in Japan, they didn't have the shitload of FMV games that we had in the West, but there are some pretty good RPGs like Seirei Shinseiki Fhey Area, Cosmic Fantasy Stories and the Lunar series!
PS: I also think that the combo Japanese Mega Drive + Mega CD (both model 1) is the most beautiful video game console ever!

I love these questions!

Favorite console: I'd have to say the PS2; it was really the console I had when I first started to "seriously" play video games. I played an RPG here and there on the PS1 but didn't quite grasp the concept at that age. By the time I inherited my brother's PS2, I was discovering games like Katamari Damacy, Persona 3, Digital Devil Saga, Dragon Quest VIII, so many good games that I still love today.

Favorite console to collect for: There's something about the DS and GBA games that I really like collecting for. DS games are pretty cheap still, and I love the system in general. It has a great library. I have fond ties to GBA games - I spent many hours playing my brother's translucent purple GBA on the bus and in my bedroom (Fire Emblem, Harvest Moon, etc.) - and adore the little square cardboard boxes. Seeing them CIB and pristine makes me so happy. PS1 and PS2 games are always fun to collect for just because of how varied the library is. I always stumble across a title that I'd never heard of but end up needing to have in my collection.

PS: I also think that the combo Japanese Mega Drive + Mega CD (both model 1) is the most beautiful video game console ever!

I also love how the model 1 Genesis and model 1 Sega CD fit together. I don't have the model 1 CD so I play using my model 2 Genesis/CD combo. The Lunar series, Snatcher, Popful Mail, Sonic CD, Vay, Terminator, plus some great shooters too!
