I recently obtained a copy of Spider for the PS1, and upon expection I noticed the disc wasn't black more blueish or gray depending on the light level. At first I concluded it must a bootleg, yet I tried it anyway in a couple different non-chipped Playstations and it booted perfectly fine. As far as I know pirates have never been able to create a self booting PS1 disc yet so I'm thinking it has to be real. Has anyone ever seen something like this?

From what I understand, a plant in China (or Hong Kong as the name suggests) had illegally pressed some (extra) PlayStation games and sold outside of normal Sony channels. They are known as Hong Kong Silvers.

Very interesting, any signs other than the silver disc?

Hm, didn't look around too much, but found this image of the bottom of the disk: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Spider-Playstation-1-PS1-Complete-Tested-/222298360779?hash=item33c203cbcb:g:CJIAAOSwcLxYFXc0

Square Enix also sold some reprints of Final Fantasy IX and Chrono Cross through their online store that were on regular silver discs.

Definitely not a HK silver. Those require either a mod chip or disc swapping to boot. The artwork and instruction manual and printing on the disc are as high quality and legit looking as any other PS1 game I've seen.
I’m now thinking maybe it’s a factory error. Maybe they were running low on the dye or whatever they used to make the discs black.

Is it a Greatest Hit release? I could swear I've seen silver-bottomed GH releases on PS1 before.

There isn't a GH version of Spider. Also it's grey not silver. If you shine a strong light on it than it appears blue.
Here's some more pics of it.

That disc looks to have been resurfaced.

Indeed. Could it be possible that the resurfacer had something to do with the lack of black on that disc? ???

no. if it were truly a black ps1 game to begin with the only way you would be able to see anything other than black is to buff off the entirety of the plastic, making it unplayable. the black is not just applied to the bottom. its the entirety of the plastic.

That's what I figured but wasn't completely sure. ;)

Hmm, now I'm curious. I own Spider, so I'll have to check mine when I get home. I'll let you guys know if it's the same.

My copy is black.

I find it odd. All copies I have seen have been black, but there usually is a BMG Entertainment logo where that Take 2 logo happens to be.

Actually, there is a "Greatest Hits" version of Spiderman

New here and don't know how to upload a picture, but, another thing is, it is a black disc. It's possible that it is a greatest hits version grey disc that the case got broken so the person just put it in a normal case they found.
Question, did you get it retail when it was on shelves.

Welcome to the site!
If you are trying to search for Spider-Man Greatest Hits for PlayStation in our database, an entry for it already exists (https://vgcollect.com/item/30124). I don't believe there are any disc color variants for this item, so the only disc should be black which can be confirmed by its SLUS-00875GH serial number. This is based on evidence from sites like MobyGames (https://www.mobygames.com/game/4333/spider-man/covers/playstation/) and Game-Rave (https://game-rave.com/?p=10241).

hold horses I just found out about this thread this morning and remember that Gamestop as one such location and probably a ton of other places around the entire world, DO INDEED, burn fake copies of discs and somehow sometimes place a FAKE sticker on the top to make it look like to real copy of the disc. BUT? people can also do that with CD/DVD/ and even blu-ray discs. I did a ton of technical work in my lifetime BUT don't know everything there is to know about it. Sometimes people can also use a image top burner CD ROM and also burn the disc image into the top of the disc as well. THIS IS OLLLLLD technology possibly 2004 or older at least.
Doing this IS illegal unless you Do not sell your custom made disc. Just like fake chips in a cartridge? yup it can be done also with any kind of game musical CD or Movie you want to.
I just stick to ROMS from now on in any game I don't have, Most times though those games will NEVER run upon startup or will freeze upon playing them OR, in the boot process of the console games, at least
HP Pavilions came with a free image burner ROM and with a free Image Burner Disc sometimes, I know becuase I had one
I mean if want to you could even make your own ink LITTERLY for that TOP disc image, but good luck finding one of them legally

Are you saying Gamestop manufactures and sells pirate games?
-
they did so for many many many many years, not sure if still doing it though
