Title: PlayStation VR
Post by: ferraroso on July 09, 2017, 01:38:42 pm
Now that the PlayStation VR is close to complete 9 months since its release, what is your general idea about this peripheral?
Is it still a thing? Has it ever been a thing at all? Will it ever be?
Are the PlayStation VR and the other VR glasses ever going to become popular, is it going to become a niche or is it going to fade into obscurity?

I think the Dreamcast Guy has made a pretty good video about this topic:

I don't agree with everything he says here, but one has to admit that he has some pretty solid arguments, right?

Particularlly, I believe that VR (at least as it is being presented to us in the present) will be remembered in the future simply as a clunky and expensive gimmick that never had the chance to take off...

But what do, you guys, think?

It'll just be a niche thing.  I've not seen anything that would say other wise.  I finally got to try it not too long ago, playing around in Resident Evil 7 and it was impressive with how well it puts you into the game, I didn't quite expect it, but not something that I would really ever see myself playing a lot of.  I think it would take more iterations of the hardware to take off, as games like Resident Evil 7 have terrible quality when playing.  Once the quality is a lot better, and the system is less bulky, it might have a better chance of taking off.  It also needs more games as there just aren't that many games for it.  I don't think it's failed, it just doesn't have a reason to take off.

I'm looking forward to the VR support with Ace Combat 7, because I think that game could be awesome in VR, as long as it doesn't make me motion sick  :P

I've seen some people who can get motion sickness with it, so they would play in like half hour chunks.  Also they sometimes have certain mechanics for turning that is supposed to help, done in degrees, rather than smooth rotation, but I thought that was horrible to play games with the degree turns.  Luckily I didn't get motion sickness and could play with smooth movement.

I have PSVR and while it has a lot of technical limitations, it's a lot of fun.

Resident Evil 7 is really impressive with a headset. I hope more developers start investing in full game length vr versions.  I'm looking forward to Ace Combat 7 in VR.

There's definitely major room for improvement but I enjoy it for what it is.

I've enjoyed mine especially Farpoint with the aim controller. Hope to see a good multiplayer fps make use of the controller like farpoint did.  As long as developers put time and effort into their games instead of just throwing something together quickly to say they have a vr game.  It's obvious to see which ones have really worked to make the experience good.

Yeah, it's just a gimmick. It was a gimmick in the 90s, and it's still a gimmick today.

History already remembers VR as a clunky and expensive gimmick when it happened in the 90s.

I said it would happen again, and everyone was like, "Oh, but the graphics are better. It will be better this time."

...told you so.

At least PSVR is actually good VR.  It's still not quite there yet, but it's close.  Another version of the hardware could likely work out the last of the kinks and mostly just needs stronger hardware so the quality of the games are better.  I'm not sure how much better something like Occulus is, which works with more powerful PC's, as I have only tried PSVR.
