Title: Anyone going for a complete set?
Post by: Retronplay on September 27, 2017, 06:15:47 am
Hey. I just finished the Mattel Aquarius and have started the Sega Dreamcast. What’s everyone else doing for complete collections?

I'm about 30 away from a full N64 set.

I probably won't bother with any other system.  I've thought about Virtual Boy since it's REALLY small, but the games are too pricey.

I want to do "true" fullset (master set) of Sega Genesis US, which is a fullset that includes all packaging variations.

there are 3 systems im legitimately going for full sets on. Atari 5200, Virtual boy, and PS2.

the problem is that I do not buy games at places like e-bay or amazon (unless they are collectors editions of recent games I wont get otherwise) so essentially I have to rely on all the game stores around me, garage sales, and friends who also collect. as far as how much of the collections I have.

I have 18/69 Atari 5200 games (through reorganizing my collection they are no entered)

4/22 virtual boy games 4/14 NA games is more accurate

~400/22XX for the ps2 (have a few doubles and need to add a few more to my collection)

im currently in a no game buying mode till I can pay off my car but I have a buddy who has a standing offer for ~100 more ps2 games I do not own

virtual boy, 32X, and N64 are the ones i'm actively working on completing.
i have 12 out of the 14 US Virtual Boy releases
about a third of the US 32x set
and about a third of the US N64 set

Unfortunately no, I don't have the space nor the interest in certain genres or games. I usually prefer to curate to games I'd eventually like to play.

Working my way towards a complete NTSC Xbox 360 set. Got just shy of 800 games right now, but that still means I've got a little over 400 games left to get, most of those being sports titles (A glance through my wishlist shows how little priority I've given that entire genre).

Far less sports games than I would originally think in the xbox 360 library, I think less than 150 in total.

I always figured you were less than 400 games shy of a full set guess i was wrong  ::)

Also Duck dynasty has to be a priority for your next haul surely ;D

Closer to 300 sports titles (more if you consider arcade racing as part of the sports genre) for the 360 actually.

As for Duck Dynasty, that's actually a lower priority title as I've already got it for the One.

I'd love to go for the Japanese GBA fullset but I've given up recently as importing all the titles seperately is just tedious, time consuming and super pricey.

I was going for a full set once... once.  A long time ago.

Then I realized I'd never get Stadium Events.  I have all the other licensed NES games though.  8)

No, and I never will.

There are all types of collecting in this hobby and none of them are bad or wrong, but personally I have never seen the appeal of going for a full set for any game console due to the large amount of crap, shovelware, old sports games that every console has. The closest I have to a complete set is my Dreamcast collection which is currently about 2/3 of the overall US library. I'm not going to lie, there have been a few times where I though, "I'm so close, I might as well just get all the rest of the games. Besides, I have nearly all the really expensive and rare stuff already." But as soon as I find NBA2K for a buck or some other mediocre Disney title, I can never bring myself to purchase it.The thought of a bunch of garbage junking up my collection and sitting nexr to a game like Shenmue or Power Stone just doesn't sit right with me. This is true of every console I've ever collection for. I like to make sure my collection is all about quality at the end of the day, not that I have every game, the good and the bad, for a given console.

Just saying since he said all the systems he collected for there were trash titles and allot of them

Neo geo pocket is pretty much no trash.

Than again not as fun as console games to be fair and ofcourse the price for neo geo pocket games thanks to the bad past sales wich make them supply pretty limited. Some of the better games complete go for quite allot, The games are fun but with the same amount of money you can get allot of the great desirable high end titles on other old systems wich in my opinion are allot better but that is expected.  It's a system to collect for if you have to much money to spend.

Its a harsh take, but NGP/C seems to be something that can be hard to get into if you had no prior experience or nostalgia for it. I was excited when I got the NGPC but I did not like playing the games. The lack of a back-lit screen was it for me, ruined by having such things on Game Gear and GBA for years. So I may joke that NGP sucks or is trash myself, but it is just I ended up not liking the experience of the system.

I am sure that scenario plays out for many people who get exited about the hype of a game or system, then go to try it out and are underwhelmed or don't like it.

The neo geo pocket is far better than the gameboy color and gameboy classic in terms of grapics, sound I'd say sometimes. The controls are also very smooth the best out of every handheld I'd say, no nostalgia for the system never had one in the past but I can see it is far better than pre gba handheld consoles. Backlit sure but you can create the perfect spots to play the games with clear image quality.

The GBA is pretty much a snes but inferior unfortunately especially noticably in arcade ports.

GBA up are way more fun then the pocket color in terms of handheld, I've already mentioned for the prices you have to pay for neo geo pocket you should be begging to buy a sunset riders at full price for the snes just to name an example.

Complete set of games I wanna own. I dream of completing my collection, at least as far as all previous gens are concerned. Problem is there's no definitive list for that. I go through and trim down the want-list a lot, and then I realize a bunch of others that I'm interested in.

I wasn't thinking of that system when I made that statement, but I guess I should also say that there are certain games, while appealing to some people and objectively good or at least decent, that I have no interest in. I guess you can say this about old sports games since for sports games many of them like Madden or Fifa are good games for what they are trying to do. That said, I own a decent chunk of the NGP NTSC-US library (found them at a second hand store years ago for super cheap and couldn't pass them up despite not ever owning the actual system), but it has never been a system I've really been that into. It seems like something that would have been cool to own when they first came out, but today I can't imagine owning one unless you are a total NEOGEO-phile, have nostalgia for the NGP, or are just really into retro handheld games.

if your into gameboy classic or gameboy color games, your definitly going to love the pocket color.

The games have better controls superior grapics and sound pretty equal. Excellent 2d fighting games on this system and some other genre's

Between 8 bit and 16 bit handheld games If you would like to have my opinion.

This is something I thought about for a while. On the one hand, it'd be neat to see every game from a certain console lined up next to one another. There would be so much history and I would never have to worry about running out of stuff to play. On the other hand, there would be a good chunk of games that I would rather not have taking up space. Sports titles, racing titles, puzzlers, generic action games, etc.

If I were to go for a complete set, it would be for the Saturn. I have "high end" items taken care of, so it wouldn't be as daunting. But, again, sports titles? Pinball titles? Blah...

I have found it hard to go for complete sets. It takes up too much space. I have taken a different approach. I like to have roughly 1 of each console, then I go for sets of titles. Right now I am working on getting all the zelda games (including crossbow hunter). This way I get the satisfaction of completing a set without getting loaded down with games I will NEVER play.

I am also working on getting complete sets of:

Mortal Kombat
Starwars
Streetfighter

No and never will.

I like to play video games, so having games I will never play is pointless to me. I'd rather spend my money on games I actually like than spending 200$ on a game i don't care about.

I've been going for complete sets on all SEGA consoles since about 2012. I just completed the 32x set in September with Web of Fire. I haven't been going strongly though for a while. I mainly chose to go for a complete set just because I enjoy the consoles. It also kind of allows me not to load my house down with more consoles. If I wasn't going for a complete set, I would probably own a NES, SNES, etc etc. But knowing I have the complete sets to work on, I'm pretty content with digital for everything else whether steam, emulators, android, etc.

Obviously I'm going for a complete Wii U set. I already have a complete all variants PAL set and have the US exclisives on top, but what remains are limited editions from both North America and Japan (plus some Japanese games). I also really enjoy getting officially licensed accessories and am closing in on having all the console bundle boxes across the regions, with around 10 to go at last count.

For N64, my goal is to get every racing and 3D platforming game.

For both Wii and GameCube, I have 100+ games, but here I take great pride in the fact that I only buy games that intrigue me and I think I'll enjoy (I refuse to stoop to shovelware, so the more these collections grow I get a lot of satisfaction from).

In the future I'd like to get back into PS1/2 and also buy a Mega Drive again. These last aims are a long way off and perhaps it will be far too expensive to do my nostalgia justice when the time comes.

I don't want to get tons of sports games and shovelware just for the sake of a "complete" set.

Its more aspirational than anything, but I would like a complete set of US N64. NES and SNES would be great too, but I don't want to pay the prices on some of those and have thus far stayed away from ebay, N64 is much more doable.

edit: I also have a complete US release Gizmondo set. toot

I am currently going to a complete NA PS1 set and complete PS1 longbox set.  I have about 850ish ps1 games and about 85 longboxes at the moment.  Lot of filler titles but I like hunting local stores and finding them a couple at a time.  For most other systems, I collect what I want to play.  Saturn might be fun to do a complete set for, and maybe Dreamcast, but we'll see if I'm able to finish the ps1 set.  Hopefully by that point, I will have enough room to display them all!

I'm going for a complete NA run of unique Xbox 360 games. I'm not doing a master set, but I do collect some cover variants. I'm down to 2 games, both released in the last month or so. Fifa 19 and Just Dance 2019. Fifa wasn't released in the States, but was released in Mexico from the look of it. I like 360 because it was the console that really got me back into gaming after nearly 20 years away, and nothing is extremely rare or extremely expensive.

The only thing I would consider going for a complete set for are game series even then maybe not all versions of certain games for example like Castlevania. I am happy with Dracula X Chronicles on the PSP and not paying a boat-load for for Dracula X or Rondo of Blood

All I need is Jack Bros. for a complete US Virtual Boy set, so I guess I technically am going for one.

Send me a list of the PS1 longbox games you are missing. There is a place here that has quite a few of them.

Will do!

Once I have more space and more money, I would love to have a PS2 collection. My true dream (for game series) is to own every Castlevania game.

I'm friends with a local collector who has a complete NTSC/US PS2 collection; it takes up a huge chunk of his basement. I hope you have a lot of room lol
