Title: Your Opinion Of Golf Games
Post by: oldgamerz on December 02, 2017, 12:10:27 am
Their is a ton of retro golf games some even being on the Atari 2600. to the NES to the Genesis/Mega Drive and onward. which ones hold a special part in your collection, or heart. Or do you even have or like any golf games? what is your main opinion on some you might have played?

Also try to explain which you like better playstation analog  or wii remote swing , or trueswing, or tri click or the 3 tap shot like in most golf games. my least favorite golf series is hot shots because of the 3 button timed tap swing method. I however LOVE the Analog or also known as trueswing method on PC or Mac.

Golf game are good for if you want to take a break from the hard and often fast paced video games that most of us enjoy, I think

Well first, I'm sorry I don't have any additional information on golf games for the Wii other than mentioning that it returned on Wii Sports Resort with additional courses.

I personally didn't like any golf games much until Lee Trevino's Fighting Golf on the NES.  It uses the 3 tap method and that is what I still favor to this day.  In my collection are a few of the Mario Golf games.  I don't play them much because they just aren't much fun in single player (compared to two player).  I find that after only a couple of rounds, I'm satisfied.

I've never played real golf, but I am fascinated with seeing all of the ways game designers have tried to approach realism in the video game form.  I've tried games with analog swing control, but I didn't stick with it enough to develop a consistent touch.  In my collection I have both Real World Golf (https://vgcollect.com/item/22571) and Xavix Golf (https://vgcollect.com/item/29795) but I have yet to actually play either.

When I want to scratch that golf itch, I actually prefer to play either Frisbee Golf on Wii Sports Resort, or Disc Golf on Sports Champions (https://vgcollect.com/item/11212).

For golf games that use motion control on the wii I think that the Tiger Woods Series after 10 use it and there is also We Love Golf which is basically a clone of the Mario Golf game on the Wii.  All of those are fairly cheap being sports games and all except for Tiger Woods 12 the Masters.

And for a little extra information, can anyone tell me a Wii golf game, that I can play golf just like in the wii sports title? Where you swing more realistic because I thought I heard that the tiger woods games for Wii don't work like the golf game included on the Wii sports disc. basically I want a Wii game that includes a real time swing feature. :) But I don't know which one to buy at the moment.

Super Swing Golf and SSG Season 2!

I had to turn off the swing, though. I kept slicing the shot. o.o

I'm not sure how accurate the swing stuff is, but you can play with or without, and both are $5 or less! I might see if you can Google search some info though, to be sure 1. the swing motion controls are up to par (HA! pun), and 2. that it's your cup of tea.

And hey, try more than one game if you can! Wii stuff is ridiculously cheap.  ;D

This is still the most played game on my Nintendo 3DS and there is still a ton I can do in it. Incredible game, better than the GameCube version even.
Other golf games I've played that are pretty good are Golf for NES, Power Golf for the TG-16 and golf in Wii Sports Club is creative and fun as well.

I do wonder if there's golf fanatic video game collector who has all the golf games ever made. And refuses to play any other type of video game.

As a much younger version of my current self, I used to love playing World Class Leader Board on MS DOS.  Unfortunately my old 386 has since given up on living.  I have fallen a little in love with Neo Turf Masters for Neo Geo MVS.  My boyfriend and I play that one together once a while, and it's actually a great golf game.  I haven't dabbled in too many others, but if I had to choose, that one would be my favourite.

I'm very sorry that I don't have any Wii golf game information for you.

I can see that most of you don't like golf games, Ill be honest ::) I have just about every golf game made by EA. Plus many others, but my favorite is the EA sports series, and mostly the Tiger Woods franchise for PS2 and PS3. My grandma also hates the sport of golf claiming it as stupid, like whats the point some of you wounder? but believe it or not their are a lot of other people who like golf. ::) But I play other games too

I suppose it is kinda of stupid in Tiger woods series 2007 and further every time you hit the ball correctly and knock it in the hole you see and hear the crowd jumping up and down all cheering. and seeing the people in the hundreds all sitting on stands just waiting and anticipating for you to knock the ball past their seated position just so they can see how magnificent watching someone else play golf really is :D

hey I'll be honest I have watch part of a game before on tv but it is more fun to play both in real life or video game then to watch it. in my opinion

funny enough I'm not a big sports game fan, but I have enjoyed most Golf games I've played, even more traditional ones like Golden Tee in the arcade. However, Mario Golf is the gold standard in my book.

I only like golf games where you can disable the out of bounds, or lets you play in out of bounds. So my favorite is Microsoft Golf.

I'd love to try Golf Story if they make a physical version of it. The newest Hot Shots Golf (called Everybody's Golf) isn't bad. I like it but find the ranking system broken since it ranks you with people who have capped out their levels. They literally hit farther and more accurately than you - how are you possibly supposed to beat their scores?

But where do we stand on Lee Carvallo's Putting Challenge?

lol, good reference.

I remember I tried out the Aqua Teen Hunger Force golf game but could never figure out how to get past the first guy you fight.

Golden Tee (arcade) is pretty interesting. The trackball controller can be a problem after awhile. It is weird because a lot of the courses are based on real life locations, but then there are a few with pools of lava on them.

I was never a fan of golf games, but one day I got a demo disc for my PlayStation 1 and at the time was a kid with almost no games, so I went through every demo on that disc until I came across a game I never heard of at the time, Hot Shots Golf. I have no clue why it resonated with me so much but that game quickly became one of my favorite games of all time, i played that demo so damn much and finally saved up enough to buy my own copy. It was also one of the only games I could get my dad to play with me so that probably had a lot to do with it.

I'm sitting here typing this out and I just realized... I don't have this game in my collection... shit, I'm off to eBay. Thanks guys!

Neo Turf Masters is still my favorite golf game! The entire presentation makes it feel like a fun televised golf tournament.

The original Golf on NES is near and dear to me also. It's simple compared to anything else out there, but my friend and I would play it a lot when we were kids. Player 1 was "Sparkling White", the role which my friend would play. It was his game, so he was usually better at it. Player 2 was "Pathetic Red", my character. We would clown around with fake TV commentary on how the game played out. He usually won, but the times when Pathetic Red pulled off an upset were great. :D

Somewhat surprised no one has mentioned the JRPG/Golf game "Golf Story" on the Nintendo Switch EShop.

It's both a good casual golf game and a good JRPG. :)

It's also dirt cheap.

The Tiger Wood Series from 2004-2012 on both PS2 and PS3 offer countless months of game play each title :)

the PlayStation 2 versions of these games are completely different from the PlayStation 3 releaces

In my opinon the best games golf games are any of the Tiger Woods PGA Tour ones game years from Tiger Woods PGA Tour 2004 for the PlayStation 2 to the last release on the PlayStation 2. Called "Tiger Wood PGA Tour 2010" on the PlayStation 2

also there is Tiger Woods PGA 2007 till Tiger Woods 12 The Masters also on the PlayStation 3 console.

but Tiger Woods PGA Tour 13 is online only and no longer works for the PS3

But also the PGA tour series from PGA tour 96 till Tiger Woods PGA Tour 2000 is also decent on The Play Station 1,

however Tiger Woods PGA Tour with no number is also a game that I have but not sure if it is in the database on here

Sigh...seriously... again? Tiger Woods 13 is NOT online only, and you can still play it on your PS3. The online portion of the game is shut down, but there is an entire single player mode you can play. And yes, you can still download the patch for it...

That said, I enjoy golf games even though I don't like golf IRL. My 1st favorite favorite was Golf on the NES. I also enjoy all the Tiger Woods games, as I find them relaxing. There is also a Tiger Woods 14.

yes true but I can not find the offline season mode in which is why I play the TW PGA games in the first place. :-\

I only want to play these days the tiger woods game if I can play a single player career mode where I can build my stats and compete in an offline pre-made tournament. I am still going to keep TW13 but I won't play as much as the other ones I mean the other ones have months of skill developing mini game or free style. I only know how to play freestyle on TW13 as of now

Not really sure how you can miss it, when you get to the main menu screen choices are

Play Now
Tiger Legacy Challenge
Career (You use a created character and build your skills/stats)  <----------------
Course Mastery (online, unplayable)
Skills Challenge (Online, unplayable)

There are more choices if you scroll down, but Career is literally in the middle of the menu screen. I just tested it and my career loads up just fine.

I tried out a couple of the Tiger Woods games on PS2 and they are not for me. I tend to not like golf games that force you into the course... Like how racing games have invisible walls. What is the point of having a golf game with all this great scenery and not let me hit the ball over there? Also it has stroke limits, which I am not a fan of. I don't want any gimmes, if it takes me 50 shots to get in the hole, I should be able to do that. Not get up to 12 or whatever and the game just moves you to the next hole.

I used to enjoy going out of bounds on a few PC golf games and hit the houses when I was younger, and I just wanted to see what would happen :P

3D map games have limits though, I used to build a few maps on games for PC for golf and a few other games that use 3D maps. and there is nothing really to see expect sometimes a black screen once you've reached the maps limits

I am sure you already knew that, but I used to be the same way with golf games,

As for the stroke limit in most EA sports golf games. It can be a life saver if you are trying to play the game and your stuck on some obstacle, I think they did that if in case you get stuck like I did a lot when I was first learning how to use the analog joystick swing

By the way it is better to play any tiger woods PGA tour game 2001 and up, if you don't use a SONY controller it is better to find a controller. any controller with indented analog sticks for easier swing control. I recommend this controller for the PS2 but their is other brands with indented joysticks as well.

a wired TTX PS2 controller with indented analog sticks to make all analog golf swing games easier

Since this thread is sort of revived I have to say that Golf Story is now my favorite golf game ever. The story is great and the golf gameplay is excellent. I wish they'd add more courses to the game because I've mastered all of the existing courses, it's one of the best games I've played this year.

Tiger Woods PGA 2005 for the PlayStation 2 is much like the 2004 release. Only it has more features, like unlockables, a lot more characters to unlock,

You can even buy and design your own golf coarse, by competing 1st in tournaments, and completing scenarios as well as defeating more golfers. it comes with 14 default courses, to unlock but some of  the ones you can unlock are just updated versions of the 14 default courses.

Everything included in the 2004 Tiger Woods PGA Tour Game is included in the 2005. only 2004 does have 10 more
different default courses.

In my opinion "ProStroke Golf: World Tour 2007" is not as good as any of the Tiger Woods series,. but the Pro Stroke 2007 game is played vary differently. It has both a 3rd and a 1st person view of your golfer, plus a course creation program included on the game disc.

I hope nobody minds me bringing up the tiger woods games  again, but I am really hooked on this series for years now

The  yearly releases for 2004-2010 is the best Golf series on the PlayStation 2 on and 2007-2012 masters is the best yearly releases on the PlayStation 3, I forgot to mention even more details. 2004 2005 is said to have a 10 year season and 2007 I just read in my 2007 Tiger Woods game manual that it actually has a 30 year season.

If you buy a tiger woods golf game on the PlayStation 2 make sure you restart the console once and a while to prevent freezing, if lets say you play 2004 for a long time the golf forums recommended you restart the console every 4 rounds of golf, this is not that bad of a inconvenience but it can get annoying

but if you play this game in shorter burst you never need to worry usually and it usually takes you at least an hour to a half an hour to get through 4 rounds of the in game season sometime longer.

I love the 2012 masters version of Tiger Woods PGA Tour 2012, for PC but I didn't like how my version of 2012 The collectors edition for PS3

guided you through the course with a golf coach. I like figuring out my own move, it makes the game more interactive in my opinion, I am not sure if there is a way to turn off the caddy/coach but I need to look into it.

But, I can see why they included a golf coach because that previous years of this golf franchise were extremely toward being brutally difficult to master. it took me 2 or 3 years to ever get good at the Tiger Woods games because I was using a regular SONY controller with the hump in the middle

but I highly recommend not using a SONY brand PS2 controller when playing any of the tiger woods games because the analog swing is damn near impossible to master on the normal PS2 controllers. due to the controller having a hump in the middle.

Plus I have lots of Nostalgia for the earlier 2007 2008 and 2009

I have the "Tiger Woods PGA Tour 2012 collectors edition" for the PlayStation 3 and it comes with a caddy coach that I think takes away some of the planning and strategy that the previous games had, the caddy in TW2012 collectors edition makes that game too easy since he plans all of your shots and you need to press a button to make your own shot location, I didn't like that feature

hmm never heard of this one (does research)

"Japan Pro Golf Tour" for the Nintendo 64 sound to me like an extremely rare game there is none for sale on ebay but 5 people on this site own a copy according to the database currently and plus the Nintendo 64 DD is said to only be released in Japan. but Metal Jesus Rocks on YouTube has one I think.

PGA European Tour, and Mario Golf 64 are currently expensive but not as expensive golf games currently for the Nintendo 64

However "Waialae Country Club" for the N64 is usally a cheap golf game to obtain where I live

That golf game for the N64 DD to expensive.

hmm never heard of this one (does research)

"Japan Pro Golf Tour" for the Nintendo 64 sound to me like an extremely rare game there is none for sale on ebay but 5 people on this site own a copy according to the database currently and plus the Nintendo 64 DD is said to only be released in Japan. but Metal Jesus Rocks on YouTube has one I think.

PGA European Tour, and Mario Golf 64 are currently expensive but not as expensive golf games currently for the Nintendo 64

However "Waialae Country Club" for the N64 is usally a cheap golf game to obtain where I live

if you like a varity of golf games the PlayStation 1 and Sega Genesis have a bunch,

Going for a full set my dude. I need that game eventually.

I have plenty of golf game alternatives to play in my collection

I like miniature golf games, mostly. I'm interested in picking up Everybody's Golf for PS4, since I've noticed it's dropped to around $14 for a new copy.

They can be fun; I played Wii Sports Golf quite a bit, and I'm actually interested in getting Ribbit King.

Has anyone tried Tecmo World Golf for the PlayStation 1?  I don't see a lot of people have this game only 17 people have this listed in their collection on this site.

This game advertises having 101 real life Golf Courses that are from the country of Japan, and it's no lie, it really does.

However I'm not from Japan, and didn't know if there truly was 101 golf courses in real life Japan. But apparently according to my research there is a lot more golf courses in japan, than I though was even possible! for a country appearing so small on the world map.

as for this golf game well this game rocks, because you get to play on all the golf courses not found inside any other golf game! and the swing method is different then the tri-click or the tru-swing, instead the game has an entirely new and adaptable control method, you need to try this game to see it, because it's really great.

If you like golf, you might enjoy this game

No worry I don't think I'll be using my Wii anyway because I don't currently have a good setup. I'm tall and my television is down low, I can't even see the screen when I'm standing up. I do have Wii Sports, I now only prefer sit down golf games.

As for Pebble Beach Golf Links for the 3DO, I never played it, but I prefer golf games with more than one golf course, and the better graphics. I prefer PlayStation 2, PlayStation 3, and Xbox Original golf games. I also like PlayStation 1 golf games, too. But i need to practice on my Genesis, and NES golf games

Oh yea. I forgot to mention, I did find and bought a copy of "Outlaw Golf 1" and "Outlaw Golf 2" at a local "Disc Replay" store.and even found Outlaw Golf 9 holes of Xmas for the original Xbox. I played a little of both Outlaw golf and outlaw golf 2 and they are hard for me since I'm not used to the controls yet.

Speaking of motion controls, does anyone else know about the "Real World Golf Accessory" it's like a primitive earlier motion detection box for the PlayStation 2. I got this game and it's accessory a long time ago. I wish I could show this strange box with strings attached to black gloves, and plugs into any PlayStation 2 game console's USB port.

the 2nd photo in this database is supposed to be the accessory, but instead it only shows what the outside of the box might look like. Personally I prefer the wireless swing controls in Wii Sports, but this accessory came before the Nintendo Wii.

this device I'm talking about using strings for motion controls. and it's meant for people shorter then me. and smaller hands then me. You plug it into your PS2's USB port, and put this thing flat on the floor, you put the Velcro gloves with strings attached. and swing a short plastic golf club like the Wii accessory.

It's not great but it works. It also come with a foot petal to navigate through the games menus instead of using a standard PlayStation 2 controller

Both of these photos are 2  from separate entries in this sites database

I can take 'em or leave 'em tbh. They're not really my thing, but I'll play one every once in a blue moon.
*Side Note - In case you don't know what a blue moon is, here's a link to some info about them: https://www.space.com/15455-blue-moon.html
**Other Side Note - I actually thought the whole idea of blue moons were just part of the saying and not actually a real thing. I was wrong, they're very real, although also pretty infrequent. Again, I highly recommend reading the article the link sends you to.

I never liked golf games or golf in general. Mini golf sure. But actual real golf, no thanks. That is unless we're talking Mario Golf. Mario games tend to be the exception to every genre he dips his toe into.

I can see why a lot of people don't like them, since most of them are vary difficult to master, in fact.

I don't like how most older golf game use the 3 button press timing method, but in the 1990-2001 that's all the technology was at that time, for most (console) golf video games

Back in 1997 the PlayStation 1 release of EA Sports PGA Tour 98 had the first analog joystick swing method. on the PlayStation 1 but, it took developers on the SONY consoles until the year 2003 to make it perfectly responsive.

In the year 2001, they had the joystick swing method mostly improved. with Tiger Woods PGA Tour 2002 on PS2

But it was not completely perfect for 2 more years on consoles, (2003)  with the release of Tiger Woods PGA Tour 2004 to get the analog joystick swing perfect.

I prefer the Analog Joystick for swinging the club, because it gives you a lot more interactive control over hitting the ball. Rather than calculating every swing and angle (calculus), and worrying about how you time your shots.

I actually neglected to mention in my original post that I once was invited by a colleague of mine to play golf, and I remember I literally let out a "pfft" to which he replied with "why?", and all I could say was, "man, I don't have the patience for that". His only response was, "touché".

Golf is truly one of those sports where you really have to like it, as in be born to play it; and is something to which I relate given the only sport that I like, other than wrestling, is bowling, which isn't really a particularly celebrated sport (at least not in the capacity that it was back in the 60s-80s).

I am rather ambivalent about golf games in general but several have been very good and few have been bad. My introduction would have been Golf on the Atari 2600 or Computer Golf! on the Magnavox Odyssey2.
My introduction to picking clubs and power meters was the Buick Dimensions https://archive.org/details/msdos_Buick_Dimensions_1990 (https://archive.org/details/msdos_Buick_Dimensions_1990) demo disk that came in the mail in 1990. For a throw away game placed on a car demo disk it isn't half bad, give it a try.
These days my Golfing online is limited to the golf course in GTA Online. It is a surprisingly well done game of golf for being a mostly ignored mini-game tucked into a completely different style of game.

Links 2004 for the Original Xbox.? it is by far the greatest analog stick golf swing video game beside any of the EA Sports games from 2004-onwards, it works best with an actual Xbox controller and not a bootleg controller it's estimated value on this site is $2.99USD for the NA version and only 101 people have this in their collections probably less because I am not sure if anybody collects games anymore since I think they are harder to come by

I highly recommend an original Xbox, an Original Xbox controller and a hard copy of this game

Being an avid golfer, with a golfing family, we started with some old PC and Leader Board, followed by World  Class Leader Board on Master System, followed by a upgraded PC and Link and then Link 386, those were great. I started to play golf later (there's a age limit on golf at least here in germany), by the time Link LS was out.
I definitely prefer the real time swing with a mouse (like current day Golf Club, PGA 2K and the like) over the simplistic 3 click. That was fine before i really learned golf and experiencd mouse swnig. I can't go back to the click stuff.

I super agree that (three click) also known as (Tri-Click) sucks compared to simulated mouse or analog swing, but more than PC mouse swing I per realistic analog swinging,

In my opinion there is nothing more satisfying than leaning back in a padded chair with a wired controller in your hand and staring back at a medium or large sized tv screen with no strain on your back or shoulders just kicking back and playing some free course admission price video game golf.

Golf games like the Tiger woods series are still somewhat easy to find physical copies of today, the only hard part is finding a working retro console to play those cheap games on. once you payed a small price for a Tiger woods series golf video game you then have unlimited access to all the courses on the game once you start playing and unlocking them as you master the game, or you could cheat even if you wanted to and unlock everything with cheats but that is not the way I role with analog stick or mouse pad golf games.

Like you said Tri click can become vary frustrating because you need to concentrate and focus on watching the bar meter at all times in order to win at it.
leaving you little or no time to focus on the beauty and the scenery of the golf video games

with the mouse pad or analog stick control? all you need to do is point aim and shoot.

However on the computer or PC you can often put heavy pressure on your shoulders and lower back because when playing on a PC. Because you need to sit up straight, but instead on a console it allows you to sit back and relax more. and the game I posted above works best on an actual Original Xbox with a real OG Xbox controller

Try playing on a console it's a much more kick back and relax experience. then with a computer mouse and a PC, since a console allows you to easily use (ANY) kind of a sitting chair including a lazy boy or recliner with ease and comfort :D

Tiger Woods PGA Tour 2001-and Beyond are all analog swing console golf video games also you can get them on PC as well

If you prefer modern day graphics and smooth analog swing on the PlayStation 3 or Xbox360 then I also Highly recommend the often cheap to afford

Tiger Woods PGA Tour games 2006-2007 and up to 2014 on both the Xbox360 and PlayStation 3

Cedric the entertainer in Tiger Woods 2004 for Xbox OG and PS2 probably beat Tiger Woods in a real game of golf ONE TIME, and they put him in one Tiger Woods Golf game, and because he is a average golfer, you need to unlock Cedic the Entertainer with a cheat code only "cettybear or ceddy bear" I do not remember but you need to type something like that every time you start the game and Sunday Tigerwoods is Always impossible to beat because He alters the AI even when you get a shot behind him while versing Sunday Tiger Woods, at all time. I am a psychic hacker sometimes. I can see these things in codes by playing the video sometimes games even before beating them.

I don't even know how to spell the cheat correctly so please take my advice and DO not even try to unlock Sunday Tiger Woods in any tiger woods video game ever created. because it probably breaks the game disc in fractions of code and you probably will need a new game copy, without even breaking it yourself, I love that game but know this so do not try that, ok?

Does Tiger Woods go to church on SUNDAYS??????????????????????

I could be Will Wrights brother but don't really know for sure, liars can do this to people they hate with PURE hatred for no reason at all but hatred..

I’m actually playing Golf Story right now. It’s a pretty fun game, but the difficulty spike at the end is killing me.

Popped in to this thread to see if anyone mentioned Golf Story, which I just finished.  The final match is definitely a big spike in difficulty.
