If I'm not going to play it, then there's no reason for me to have it. If a game remains sitting on the shelf for too long with no desire to play it anymore, I usually sell it.

I don't believe you played that copy of PGA Tour Golf on Genesis.

Play, of course. But I'd be lying if I said I've never admired my collection before.

I would like to say PLAY but realistically I add more to my collection every month than I would realistically be able to play in that same time period. if I were a kid again though you bet your ass id be playing them all. I used to live 2 blocks from a block buster and would constantly walk down to rent a new game almost every other day. back when I could actually put 6+ hours in a day gaming. now im lucky to get 1-2 hours a day. the only times this is not true is when I preorder games I will always clear a few days of all responsibilities (besides work) and play my new game for 5-6 hours a day. but I only actually pre-order around 6 games a year.

I only buy games I intend to play and enjoy - even though there's the possibility that I never finish a game. To buy games just for the sake of collecting and displaying is worthless in my eyes.

I've always bought with the intention of playing my games...eventually.

In recent years I've deliberately bought games that I plan on playing soon, as in the next couple months after purchasing them. This mostly pertains to newer games, but in some cases retro games too. There are the occasional great deal I find on a game that I want, but don't have any immediate desire to play so those ones will get shelved until probably a much later date. I've never collected or bought games however for the soul purpose of filling out media shelves so I can salivate over how good they look on them.

Bit of both.  There's stuff I get just to have, like the big box PC games, because the packaging is really cool, even if I'm not gonna be able to play them.

Definitely more of a collector than a gamer but Dragon Force, Age of Mythology, and WoW/EQ were rabbit holes that took a DAMN long time to crawl out of.

Used to be both, but every game I've purchased this year has been played which is how I'm going to collect moving forward.

I get where this question is coming from but why does everyone shit on gamers who do buy games just to admire them on a shelf? If you collect stamps or coins you don't use those, or if you buy a 20k piece of art and hang it on the wall you aren't really "using" it either. To me, actually using the game is a perk of owning something special.

Society has taught us that people buying a car which depreciates in value the moment they drive it away from a lot and then owe money on it for five years is normal, but a person who collects video games and keeps them sealed is some sort of weirdo.

I know gaming isn't an investment, but there are much more foolish things to spend money on honestly. I know people who blow through money on alcohol, weed, restaurants, TV cable bills and car payments and think it's justified but raise eyebrows and think people who buy games to keep them sealed are idiots.

All games I buy are with the intention to play...eventually. The problem is that the backlog is in the triple digits, so that eventually is very far off unless it's one of those games that go right to the front of the queue.

Some of the folks here have upwards of 1,000 games, sometimes more.  With such massive libraries, you could play 3 different games a day and not play them all in a year.  Eventually it becomes hard to keep up and it becomes a curated library to organize and keep your favorite beloved games throughout time but to actually play them, i'm not sure any of us realistically play them all :)

I do only buy games that catch my eye or that I think will be fun to play though like others have said, that's very important, but my back log is really big because I always end up getting caught in a plot of 1 game and take a few weeks or months to enjoy it before moving on.  But I buy more games then I realistically can play.  :D.

I buy games that I would like to play, fully knowing that I probably won't get around to it. I used to just buy what ever I could get my hands on, but I've been trying to trim the fat a bit lately.

Agreed- buy cigarettes, which results in your literally burning away your money? Normal. Expensive name brand clothing that you'll wear for six months, then give away becuase it's out of fashion? Normal. Hundreds of dollars on cologne, makeup, booze- things you will use up and not have anymore? All normal. But collect games that don't get used up, and can gain hold/gain value in some cases? Well if you're not actively playing all of them, you're a weirdo.

Anyway- I buy with the intent to play and the knowledge that many of the games I own will not actually be played, at least by me. I'm fine with letting other people be the ones who get the use out of my games if they'd like. As for why I buy them? They're cheap. Most of what I buy are used games on the cheap. I've been buying a fair number of wii/wii u/Xbox 360/ps3 titles lately, becuase they're cheap. The rare times I shell out for new games, I usually play at least a good chunk of them right away- except for Limited Run Games, I pick those up when they're available becuase it's all but guaranteed they'll cost more later. Meaning I either get a deal or a flip out of it.

Wow, this is a reverse. I'm normally the guy buying to play, rather than collect, and usually in collecting groups it's me getting grief for posting a cartridge only find because it's not complete or in pristine shape or something. I do not see collectors being called weidos for having a shelf stuffed full of games.

well I did in fact but it was just not his copy

anyway I have a ton of games in boxes some on a shelf, I do have a huge backlog I just don't know what to get into at the moment I have over 1007 games some of them I haven't even added to my collection on VGCollect.

Only games that I want to play.
When I look at gamers collections I prefer to see a collection of games they want to play because I feel like you can see their personality trough what they play, so I feel like if I bought games just to buy them my collection would kinda loose it's identity in a way. No disrespect towards collectors who buy everything tho

To be fair people who buy everything even than you can see their personality, gaming wise maybe not but in other terms of personalities I'd say yes.

In terms of collecting people come in different flavours even when buying everything.

Some do it to keep it cheap, some people are completionist for multiple sets not to mention if the condition is anything goes or cib in excellent shape. Is the stuff neat and organized or not etc etc

Due to my lack of time in recent years, I believe I buy games for two main reasons:
1 - To put them on the shelf.
2 - To sustain my hope of playing them someday...

Tbh, no ill will towards folks who don't intend on playing stuff, but personally I'd be pretty depressing to me to not be able to play hundreds of games I own. Having so much to experience but never POSSIBLY having the time to do it all...

I like to keep a flow of buying a few games, playing them all, then buying new games when I start to itch for something new to play. That way, nothing ends up unplayed, and it'll build up a nice backlog of "I finished this game, but it wouldn't hurt to revisit it" rather than loads of unfinished games staring me in the face.

Idk, maybe it's because I'm really a big kid at heart, but the idea of having hundreds of games to play any time I feel like it seems much more appealing than simply having a random assortment of games, just because they exist.

To play it cause I don't own a shelf, 75% of my games and consoles are stored in shoe boxes  ;D

Bah- pristine collecting is overrated. It costs more, and games with minor flaws have more character (not to mention would be easier to identify in case of theft.) Forgoing cases & boxes means they take up less room, too.

I only bother with complete titles for disc-based games. The logic being, I'll need a case to store the disc in anyway, might as well be the original.

I have always been buy to play. Personally I don't like having a lot of games that I haven't played yet. Which is why, among other things, I only buy a game or two at a time. Keeps the interest in the hobby lasting and sustainable for me.

Play. If there is a game I'm not interested in playing I won't buy it.

Unrelated, but, how do I get my collection in my signature?

You have to go to "Profile" on the top then "Forum Profile" and add the link below to your signature (but without the spaces before the url at the beginning, and before the img and the url at the end of the link):

To play. I don't display my games. I do have some that were bought strictly because I didn't have them but after cleaning them and giving them a test run through a surprising amount have been a lot of fun. I enjoy finding new experiences this way.
I also have a few that are in the collection just for the absurdity of their existence. Take for example BASIC for Atari 2600... You program in basic using 2 linked 12 button controllers... 24 buttons... that is not enough for an English alphabet. You program using preset commands and modifier keys that give each key 4 possible values. WTF? Yeah so I had to have that and try it out. Will I program something interesting with it? Heck no, even if it was possible you can't save it but what a bizarre thing to be able to use and demonstrate. I'm glad it's in my collection even if some '83 shovelware will get more playtime.

I know the feeling. You just see it and go "This is so stupid/horrible. I must have it!". For me, what fills that the best out of my collections would either be my sets of Presidential Pez Dispensers or a set of Star Wars action figures commemorating Hong Kong being returned to China.

Both.

+1

I particularly love the look of a tower full of NES games and my spinning CD shelves with my TurboGrafx/PC Engine/SuperCD games. And even though I have all kinds of multi carts and such, there's nothing like taking a game off the shelf, holding the media, thumbing through the book, and jamming said media into the console to get going.

Bit of both. A lot of the more collectable games I buy with the intention of playing later and then never actually play properly though. My backlog is pretty titanic.

Almost exclusively to play, there are games for older systems which I used in my youth that I'm unlikely to play using original hardware as well as a few which are just window dressing, but the games I get are for playing.

There are a few reasons my collection far exceeds my ability to get through the games as of yet:

1) Life's meant I've not had the spare time, or if the spare time exists then the energy to play games as opposed to gawping at Youtube hasn't been there.
2) System life-cycles mean that it's extremely cost effective to pick up games for systems which are 'old but not retro', as someone said here recently, it's time to fill in gaps with PS3 and 360 at the minute, the ideal time to collect obscure Wii games has arguably already passed as that system lost support earlier. The vast majority of my Xbox original games cost 50p, for instance.
3) I regularly go game hunting and am also adept at picking up non-gaming items or gaming items of value and swapping them for games or systems that I want.
4) The net has been cast wide - most action games (excluding sport and racing), RPGs (and hybrids) and anything that's not deep strategy have been fair game, up till now, so that they're there to be tried.

There are some factors which are dragging things the right way though:

1) I'm starting to make time to play.
2) The net isn't being cast as wide with current systems and I'm being much more selective in what I pick up for the systems which are currently cheap (youtube is great for getting an idea of how a game will play) and retro stuff is hard to find in the wild.
3) The way I weigh-up games is changing - in the past and during my childhood for instance, it was very easy to 'wait in hope' that a game will improve. If, after the initial few missions/levels, there isn't a massive change happening (if the game is mediocre) then that's 'it' - that's what the creators settled for, if it's not good enough then it goes.
4) Games in my least favourite action genres are going to be traded in unless they're something special, the Gears of War series for instance is going to get the chop, I've already traded in most of my Yu-Gi-Oh games and all of the Yakuzas.
5) Stuff bought cheap en-masse can be traded-in en-masse for something harder to get hold of, which will be happening.

So it's all good.
