Title: What is your biggest collecting regret?
Post by: gf78 on January 01, 2019, 11:01:23 am
What is your biggest regret during your time collecting?

Mine has to be when I sold off my Castlevania collection. I had all of them, complete and in great condition with the exception of Castlevania Adventure II and Castlevania Legends, both for the original Game Boy.

It was probably around four years ago. I really needed the money and Konami's decision to pretty much leave console gaming behind made that decision a bit easier.  I pretty much didnt look back until Bloodstained from Iga cropped up on Kickstarter. It made me start longing for wielding the Morning Star again.

Then comes the excellent (in my opinion) Castlevania series on Netflix. Then my wife buys me the NES & SNES Classic systems with Castlevania, Simon's Quest and Super Castlevania IV. And again this Decenber just passed, Simon and Richter are in Super Smash Bros Ultimate. Man...that classic Castlevania music. The battle with Dracula where he takes on his second demonic form...I'm really missing those old games.

I have several.

Not purchasing Panzer Dragoon Saga at $250 back in 2015: I local used media store got a complete, really minty copy of PDS in and had it at $250, which is still a lot of money. At the time it was on the low end of what it typically went for on ebay. I had no idea it would jump to the $500/600 range it currently commands. If I had known I would have bought it without a 2nd though.

Not purchasing Rule of Rose for $90: Very similar situation at PDS; local media store gets it in, is priced on the low end of what it sells for online, pass on it, then it more than doubles in price a few years later.

Selling a lot of my retro gaming collection: This one isn't as much me regretting not picking something up for cheaper, but rather me selling a big chunk of my retro games in 2017 for medical expenses. What made that sting even more is that I found many of those games for dirt cheap with hunting for video games was still very fun and lucrative. I've recently began rebuilding that collection, but I still miss some of the specific copies of games I used to gave.

I dont think I have any regrets. My collection focuses have changed from time to time but its all a learning experience honestly.

Zero regrets but that's mostly because i'm a player first and collector after, so I don't usually buy games that I don't want to play and if I want to play a game that's to expensive or rare i'll just play it on an emulator. I don't have a huge budget so it's either I do that or don't play the game.

I guess buying more than I should and as a result, the build up of unplayed games became bigger and bigger. I remember having like 25 games max prior to getting a job and most of it was on one system but soon as you get money to splurge, the increase started. I dont necessarily regret what I have but I do regret not getting to play them over the years is all if that makes any sense.

On a similar theme to having so many games so little times - Portable games.... I just never get around to them.

I played the heck out of the PSP in my college years but now when I am out I simply never have the need to play a gaming system. I have a DS & 3DS too as many of the games seem like ones I'd love to get around to (the Dragon Quest's being a main example.) But sadly I just never get the time to sit down and experience them. Mostly due to being so busy with my PS4, I'm never short of games to play on that system and usually moving onto another new release/title monthly. I had the exact same problem with the Switch, it was a decent console but I was just too busy with the PS4 to give it the time of day and after a year of it sitting on the shelf I decided to sell it - I think a big part of that was to being dissapointed by Xenoblade Chronicles 2 after i fell in love with the original on Wii.

Buying so many games I don't know what to play, I am hoping after I get surgery on my sinuses I can play more games and actually feel good enough to actually try some of the games I have already. I have a backlog so huge it's close to every single game in my collection. And my collection has more games than what I have on display under my collection. For example I got a 500 full NES game Multicart that has at least 450 games with all levels included on it. and most ever single PS2 Arcade Compilation that I can't add the games to on VGcollect, I was told not to add them and I can see why

But I play video games most times on an easier setting, and I believe in mastering all my video games on each and every setting in the options panel, I know I'll be dead before that could ever happen lol. and that is why I have my signature that, is what I believe. read my Philosophy below you may find it helpful to you :)

So many games I've regretted buying, not many instances of regretting not buying something, but I'm sure I've been in that scenario.

My biggest regret is to have sold all my game collection  12 years ago when i was like 15 years old ... and there was a lot of rare expensive game...every time i think about that i have an over whelming amount of regret, and at the time the hype for collecting retro game was not as big , so it was for the most part big lots of games i bought for almost nothing to friend , people from school and garage sale. And sometimes videostore where getting rid of those ''ancient time''  games dirt cheap to make space for new generation game. anyways i was in possesion of a lot of big title of super nintendo , nintendo 64 , Nes , etc..with some awesome hardware too. and someday , probably in a state of teenager crisis, I decided i didint need those thing anymore , and i sold EVERYTHING, to a local videogame store that was still at the time buying older game...and i sold it for a fu***** ridiculous amount of money ...like... not ridiculous in a good way. Anyways like 6 years later at like 21, the urge to get a lot of thing back and start collecting game again hit me . and since then i have accumulated a lot of awesome game and game related stuff . I've made some incredible deal on stuff since all these years and im really happy with what i have . Im not finish yet entering all my collection on the site , im working on it Lol. oh..and Of course since rebuilding my collection i've regreted a couple of time not getting something at a good price and then later wanting it at higher price  >:( Lol

I’ve had quite a few, but none so big that I couldn’t forget after a while...
My most recent one was passing on a mint condition Sony HBF1-XV MSX2+ that was being sold for ¥15,000 (around US$ 140.00) at a shop close to my place...

I regret a few things.

1. Selling my NES/SNES games prior to moving across the great pond to Germany. I have a bunch I have spent way more replacing...
2. Selling my GB games when I got a modded SNES in Germany... to buy US SNES games.
3. Giving away all those juicy SNES games in their complete boxes... including Earthbound. Ouch.
4. Shipping my games across country... My Suikoden II + 20ish other games... that never arrived.
5. AND FINALLY STARTING TO BUILD THIS BEAUTIFUL COLLECTION A FEW YEARS AGO. Damn you, Pierre!

I would be so much richer now... Oh well, I love looking at my shelves!

buying so much so fast. when I was in college I had a small collection of games ~50 I was a collector back then but had no disposable income. when I finally got disposable income almost all of it went into buying all the games I had played and wanted. finally after years and a marriage I cut WAY down on the amount of games entering my collection to a fully manageable amount.

I passed up Little Samson for $50. It was on a store shelf in Memphis for over a year. I had a personal rule of never paying more than $20 on a single game. It was early in my collecting. Samson was about a $100 at the time. I knew I’d find it at a yard sale.

Fast forward to Retropalooza 3 in 2015. I paid a shitload for it.

Trading in my GCN and GBA stuff for a Wii.  It wasn’t a lot, but what I miss most is all the progress on my memory cards.

We've had similar topics in the past, and I was going to respond to this one in a similar fashion - getting rid of the PS1 games i owned from new, many of which I have yet to replace. But, for some reason, I got thinking about this and a few things running a lot deeper popped out.

I regret having overestimated my free time since I started collecting again properly @ 10ish years ago now. I've gotten good at trading for stuff, picking stuff up when it was cheap etc., but I've ended up with a bloated collection containing stuff I wouldn't want to play even if I did have the time, I've had to invest one hell of a lot of time trimming it down to where it is now and re-arranging my 'actual' collection. That's time I would have rather spent elsewhere. At least my collection is now a collection of things I want to play or keep, not just things.

The other thing, which has sort of been at the back of my mind for some time, but crystallized when I was thinking about this topic, is that I've been picking up fishing and flight sim games for the past 10ish years with the intention of playing them with my Dad or at least setting them up for him to have a go on. I've moved out, have a long-term partner and a baby on the way, my Dad's nearly 70, it's just not going to happen. In a way that's regret, right there, but the thought of browsing through these games in the future after my father passes away and getting smacked in the chest by it.. well that stung. Subconsciously that must have been there awhile, but when realization really dawned I pulled the 360 flight sim games (Ace Combat aside) out of my collection as quick as a flash, either yesterday or the day before. Certainly don't need something like that staring me in the face somewhere down the line. I'll be going through the fishing games and flight games on other systems very soon.

Between the two I'm feeling a lot happier with my collection and have also got rid of something that was at the back of my mind, so thanks for the topic GF78!  8)

No problem!  I think that many collectors end up with things in our collections "just because" or for intentions that deep down somewhere, we know are unrealistic. I too have bought things with thoughts of sharing the experience with someone, ended up having games that I had no intention of ever playing, etc. My dad has never been a gamer,  but reading your post has made me think about  things like how our time together will end, sooner than I want because of the inevitable march of time. So I'm going to make an effort to spend more time with my pops, and keep focused on only collecting games & merchandise that's actually important to me & I'll enjoy. Thank YOU shfan.

Well, that would probably be selling my physical copy of Duke Nukem 3D and expansions and refunding Megaton Edition from Steam (back when it was available on the storefront). The base game can still be bought on ebay or as part of the 20th anniversary edition, that was recently released, but the expansions are extremely rare to find nowadays.

My regret is waiting years before building my gameroom. I love being able to look at and appreciate the artwork on the games themselves. Now my hole collection is displayed in glass display cases or on shelves instead of in boxes. I have 4 widescreens to play the modern consoles and 3 retro tvs with the retro consoles ready to play at anytime. It's great for gaming parties or just sitback relax have a drink at the bar and soak it all in should of done it years ago! (yep my mancave has a bar)

I wish I had never traded in consoles and games for the next gen consoles/games. I traded in NES for SNES, SNES for ps1, ect
I had that crazy expensive xbox mech game with HUGE cockpit controller. Traded it in for whatever flavor of the month game.

Ouch, those expansions are hard to find, but note it is also a bitch to get those expansions to work on a modern PC. You used to need to hack or download hacks in order to get them to work with Eduke32 at least on windows 10 app but with steam I think all you need to do is buy Duke Nukem 3D off steam and

I am not sure but I think Steam sells all the primary 4 expansions included with the purchase of Duke Nukem 3D, that is how I got my digital copy, I own the real things too but without steam doing the hacks for it is kinda difficult to get them to work on any modern windows OS computer

The 20th Anniversary Edition, which I got recently, only has the original four episodes from Duke3D Atomic and an additional 5th episode. The "Duke it out in DC", "Duke in the Caribbean" and Nuclear Winter" expansions are not included in that version (due to some legal difficulties). The Megatom Edition, did have the base game and those three expansions and also supported modern systems. I did not think they would have removed it from the storefront when I refunded it originally but they did.

On the positive side, I was able to found the physical version of the game "Severance: Blade of Darkness" (without the manual and original cover), a game which flopped both financially and sale's wise and was removed from GOG in 2013, the only storefront that had it available (due to some copyrighted music)

I still don't know why I refunded the Megaton Edition in the first place.

What I most regret are my actions as a Kid.

When I was a kid  and got new NES and SNES games, I immediately open them,  read manuals once , and then throw boxes and manuals away :(

And of course trade them, sometimes for very bad games (In mexico there weren't so much VG magazines) .

I wish I still kept all this games boxed, as I almost collect complete games.

I regret selling off about every game I've ever owned during my childhood years. I had a lot of CIB games. I had many Pokemon games CIB and now I'm looking to get them again because I miss owning them. I had a lot of good Gamecube games as well. I managed to find a few of the GC games at yard sales so I'm not AS regretful for that.

I also had a good amount of PS2 stuff but thankfully most of that is still cheap to get back.

Well, fristly, I effing regret throwing away the boxes for all my Game Boy/Color and N64 games. Thing is I held them for a long time, and one day I just threw them away just because. Stupid things you do when you're a kid/teenager.

Secondly, I regret not buying Tomba!, The Misadventures of Tron Bonne, Ninja Five-O, and Ninja Gaiden Trilogy when I had the chance. This is quite possibly one of the single most stupendously and absurdly idiotic things I have ever done (as far as video game collecting goes). I still beat myself over this.

Another regret would be trading my NES at a local video game store for a Nuby Game Boy Amplifier (https://vgcollect.com/item/64193) and a Nuby Game Boy Magnifier  (https://vgcollect.com/item/127869). In my defense, I was a wee lad back then and didn’t know any better – clearly I was taken advantage of. And I also regret selling my SNES with all the games I had at the time simply because I didn’t have [enough] money for my monthly comicbook pull-list.

Lastly, when I bought the strategy guide for Kingdom Hearts II to complement the game, the whole thing crumbled on me when I flipped through the pages at home – literally, every time I flipped a page, it came off. So, instead of going to the store to exchange the guide for another one, as any sane individual would, I decided to buy a binder with a bunch of protector sheets and Frankenstein a “new” one. I even recall my mother telling me, in a motherly tone, how stupid the idea was, yet I still followed through, effectively spending more than I should have on this guide. Suffice to say, I very much regret this. Every time I remember, I want to punch my face.

Oh well, life is full of regrets after all.

PS: While I was writing this post, I remembered during my early days using eBay coming across a listing for all six Mega Man NES games, where the seller was asking a mere $150 plus shipping. I was so simple-minded that I decided against buying the wondrous sextet because, at the time, I didn’t own an NES. Even though that may be a sound reason, nowadays I find it to be the most obtuse one there is, especially considering this was during 2006-07, back when the retro scene was pretty much in its embryonic state. So yeah, I regret this tenfold, especially considering I had the money and, for all intents and purposes, the inkling of buying the lot.

But hey, like the saying goes, good decisions come from experience, and experience comes from bad decisions.

Just remembered another regretful thing I did!

Back when Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne was a hot commodity, even though it wasn't exactly a rare game, I went to a GameStop and bought 5 copies with some leftover money from my scholarship – I decided one was going to be for me, the rest to flip. This was during my initial foray with eBay; I remember thinking I would make a good buck and be able to buy me some games. The funny thing is this was during 2008, when the reprint was about to be released, but unfortunately at the time I didn't know about it. I listed the games at a price that was probably $5-$10 less than what everyone else was asking for – I managed to sell one after about a week and some change, but the buyer contacted me asking to cancel the transaction because yadda-yadda; I knew it was buyer's remorse (probably knew or learned about the reprint). I wasn't going to waste my time. That situation deterred me a bit, and I ended up waiting too long before listing the games again, which was a big mistake. I list them again, but this time none sold. As I am about to re-list them, I stumble with a link to another listing for the same game—and take into account this is the 1st printing—selling it for $29.99 or better offer with more than 10 available. At that moment I knew I was done, so I swallowed my pride and, with the exception of one that was in pristine condition, I listed the rest for $25.

That was a hard lesson, but a lesson nonetheless.

No collecting regrets here to be honest

The only things that might come close is when I bought certain vip points manuals or games seperately only to get them in a deal for dirt cheap shortly after sometimes multiple times when in the past I just never got them. Those are the things that get me the most but It's pretty minor really.

Stuff like that happens often, and I'd say it's commonplace for many hobbies.

Like, for example; say you've been looking for that one game that's a bit pricey, and you don't find it in the wild or no reasonable eBay listings show up. So then, after waiting for too long you tell yourself, "ah, F it", and end up biting the bullet...to then, finding that same game a multitude of times in the wild or somebody lists it the next day for cheaper on eBay.

Another regretful thing I did was selling a NeoGeo Pocket Color and a Game Boy Color: Pokémon Special Edition that I acquired through a friend for dirt cheap during my initial foray on eBay years ago. I wholly regret it a thousand-fold, but this was at a time where I wasn’t as involved as I am today with gaming. Of the two, I regret the Game Boy Color the most since it was Pokémon-themed. I don’t know what came over me.

I also regret giving all my Pokémon cards to my niece one day when my brother came over to visit with his kids. I sincerely regret it given how spoiled and ungrateful they grew up to be. What sucks is the cards were well-kept and they were all 1st editions... Thankfully I kept my Charizard, so not all is lost...
