Title: What is the main focus of your collection if you have one?
Post by: gf78 on January 01, 2019, 03:24:40 pm
Curious what you focus on mainly for your collections. A particular console?  A brand?  A series?

I've put my focus on Nintendo-published titles and related merchandise with the strongest focus on The Legend of Zelda. On the side, I buy pretty much any game by ID Software.

Next to Zelda, the "core" Nintendo franchise titles like Mario, Smash, Donkey Kong and Starfox among others are ones I actively watch out for. If I see a Nintendo-published game for cheap, I'll usually pick it up. I also wont snub my nose at a good non-Nintendo title if I can get a good deal on it. Such as Contra which is in my collection.

So, what's your focus?

Its a mix bag mostly. I have more games on Playstation brand than anything spanning the PS1-PS4, PSP, PSVita and what not. As for series, Im huge on Zelda so that has priority as well as Castlevania, Metal Gear Solid, Resident Evil. Then the other side of that is games that I had when I was a kid which the most part I have now and games that I have wanted for a while which is still work in progress. I have alot of layers right now.

My collection consists of the following - CIB SMS North American library (all games, console, accessories), CIB PS1 RPGs, Dragon Quest, sealed Freak series controllers, sealed Zelda Gamecube games, PS4 complete library (All games, consoles, controllers).

I'm focusing on North American SNES for now. My long term goal is to have a complete retail collection. After that I'll probably keep my collection to Nintendo systems. If I branch out from Nintendo, it'll probably be to recreate my childhood SMS collection, as it was the first console I ever owned.

My collection has no real focus except for quality/favorites over quantity. So I'm just getting games I wanted as a kid but never got to play or games from series I've never played before.

From a collecting perspective only:
1. Final Fantasy XII PS2 related
2. Borderlands series related
3. PS2/PS3/XBOX/XBOX 360 related

From a general perspective:
1. Something I'll play later on when I stop buying new games when it goes all digital
2. Something I've had before that I don't have currently

My focus rotates, at the moment, N64 full library (7 games away) and anything remotely interesting on PS2/360.

I feel like my collecting focus has changed continuously ever since I began collecting. It started with Sega Saturn, then PS2, then retro Nintendo and Sega, then Dreamcast, and so on and so on. Currently my collecting focus is mainly NES, SNES, Genesis and Gamecube games on account of me selling a large chunk of these games a couple years ago; I'd like to obtain various titles I used to have as well as several I've never owned. Somewhat of a secondary focus for me is imports, mainly for the Sega Saturn, since there are so many excellent titles that we never got in North America. However, in a year from now my focus might be on something completely different, especially if I'm successful in rebuilding a good chunk of my collections from the consoles above.

My collecting habitats change with time it used to be the nes and snes were my main focus. Then I switched to dreamcast and after that the xbox 360 now it's back to nintendo.Im focused on nes,snes,n64 and gamecube. Im almost finished I only need about 175 games to complete those four systems combined. (With the lions share belonging to the snes at about 100)

simply put . Only things that are really meaningful to me or that i really want to play . for the retro stuff ,only for system that are nostalgic for me. For exemple at some point i started a sega genesis(megadrive) collection but i sold it all because it wasnt a system i really love at the end and i've never owned one when i was younger.... also i've never been interested in  full set .When i enter in my game room i want it to be very personal and close to me..  that being said, I completly respect the determination of those wanting to have everything , its just not my thing  :)

I love a lot of different series and genre of game . but one of my focus is survival horror. As for system i love collecting for , gamecube ,dreamcast, ps1, n64 , ps2, ps3, ps4 to ...name a few.

My focus is to have games and systems that I’ve wanted as a child, but could never own (like Saturn and Neo Geo stuff) or games that were in some way meaningful to me (such as Master System and original PlayStation games).

I've got two major focuses when it comes to my game collecting:

Xbox 360
Team Fortress 2 Unusuals

I want to acquire an entire NTSC 360 library. I've been chipping away at that bit by bit and have around 370 titles to go, It has slowed down a bit as I don't have a whole lot left outside of Kinect titles and the sports genre (my least favorite genre).
As for Team Fortress 2, I want to have the world's largest single effect collection. I'm currently sitting in 2nd place at 106 Green Confetti hats (1st place has 162 hats of a different effect). This one mainly grows on finds of opportunity as these items can be worth a pretty penny and can take a while to show up on the market.

Recently, I've been also building up my collection of PS4 games, both to get some exclusives and to make my PSN profile look as weebish as possible with my completions.

I collect items that I want to one day play. Or stuff that I played as a kid and just want to have. Or stuff that grabs my fancy. Or stuff that I was told I need to play and I haven't and they kind of look ok.

Of course, I don't look for any cardboard boxes anymore. I just want to get some plastic cases (when I have the cash... or they start shipping them from somewhere in Canada) with nice printed labels (I have a couple that I got with games I bought at conventions, so I want to match those). I still have some of the boxes from my gb/c/a games, but would gladly sell them or exchange them against some good plastic cases... :)

Of course, in 2019, I need to cut down how much I am allowing myself to spend on games, so I will need to be even more discerning! So more research! And backlog whittling we will go!

The Majority of my collecting focuses around PlayStation, which simply is my console of choice (Though I do own other consoles a 360, Wii, DS, 3DS even a Dreamcast). I just like to have a selection on my shelf that I can go back to and decide to play. Having a game on my shelf just settles that assurance that it will be available should that desire crop up to play a certain game. the truth is, like the majority of you my games spend most of their time sitting on their shelf but when that time comes and I decide to pull it off for use it's just nice to know I can pop the disc in and it's ready to play - Recently I've been playing through the Kingdom Hearts series and to have all the games bundled in to the PS4 Remix is a joy and a prime example of something become relevant to me need and readily available.

Beyond that I suppose the next best thing I would say I "collect" are Final Fantasy related items - Nothing excessive but I have plenty of Guides, Soundtracks, Figures, Artbooks & have even been to a Distant Worlds Orchestra concert (Got tickets to go this year too!). I'm not someone who is aiming for a complete collection or anything but I've got a decent gathering which I'd say is beyond the normal consumer and fan noteworthy.

NES without a doubt.
I have all but one. Damn you Stadium Events!

Other than that, it’s other Nintendo stuff with some SEGA sprinkled in.

I collect just about anything gaming related I can find. Good game, bad game, makes no difference. My friends and I do a variety of game nights and we can have fun with pretty much any bad game. Sometimes a game is fun on its own, other times it's fun to make fun of it, we find a way.

I also plan to open a video game museum someday if the opportunity should present itself. Pretty much everything will be on display and available for play.

Personally, I tend to get more excited about items I find that you just don't see. Love finding obscure and lesser known items out there like TurboGrafx or 3DO or even the stupid rare stuff like the Apple Pippin. Just about the only thing I don't really go for is the sports titles, but if it's only $1 or 2 I may pick it up just to avoid ending up paying more in the future if I'm going for a full set. I will also buy sports titles if I already have the majority of them. My OCD goes nuts if I have 2k4, 2k5, 2k6 and 2k8 but not 2k7.

Mine is a mess, but I'm going to start focusing on Zelda and Gamecube games, and eventually other 6th generation content.

I don't really have a main focus to be honest. I collect things I want to play someday, not going for a complete collection of any system. I've been expanding my collection from just games to art books recently. But that goes mostly for my favorite games. But in the near future I want to get my hands on a Dreamcast.

What are some of your favourite Artbooks? I enjoy looking at all the concept designs and seeing how the ideas were formed - My favourite is BradyGames - ' The Making of Final Fantasy IX' ... A little biased I know but it's a wonderful book which acts as a vacum in S-E's art department and flourishes with all sorts of sketches, NPC designs and background art, there aren't many FF artbooks like this sadly but I'm grateful there is one to my favourite game :)

Two that really sticks out from the rest I got is Dark Souls Design Works. It contains character sketches of monsters, npcs and all the main classes. Area artwork of both used and unused material and if not all then most of the weapons and armor in the game.

And then the "crown jewel" of my art book collection so far is The Art of Blizzard Entertainment. I'm a huge fanboy of Blizzards earlier work. It contains art from Blizzards 3 main titels, Diablo, Warcraft and Starcraft. It's almost 400 pages thick with everything you can imagine. Even from games that never got to see the light of day. It even got some christmas drawings in the last section of the book.

Next paycheck I'm gonna get my hands on the Bloodborne book. All of the fantastic monsters they create over at From Software never cease to amaze. I'm a sucker for the more morose gothic themed artwork, not sure why tho. I would consider myself a cheerful kind of guy.  :P

I collect for "approved franchises." Basically, if there's a franchise that I like, then I try to purchase and play (and ultimately collect for) all the games in it. I'll double-dip here or there, like with Final Fantasy or Tales of, but usually I just try to limit myself to one version of a game as long as it fits in that franchise. Also, there are exceptions. Like, I don't have any desire to find Panzer Dragoon Orta even though I like the series. I'm just not an Xbox-er.

I collect really whatever I think I would enjoy. My main focus had always been the Gamecube since it is my favorite system. I've reached that goal nearly though as I really only desire one more game for the system. Nowadays I don't focus on anything specific, just games that I think I would enjoy and keeping up with my favorite franchises.

Yeah, Orta is amazing. You are definitely missing out. When you have those guys that believe video games should be considered an art form, this is the game that I think of.

Lost Odyssey is playable on the One as well.

Really, if a 360 game is worth playing and is on the One's Backwards compatibility list, you'll want to play it on the One, as there are noticeable improvements in game performance. In Lost Odyssey's case, playing it on the One effectively eliminates almost all load times.

I focus, now on CIB NES, SNES and N64. Though I also just through random pickups have a pretty bangin' CIB GB/GBC/GBA collection. Nowhere near complete for any of them but I have most of whats worth collecting for them loose (not true of NES and SNES.) Also have an okay Gamecube collection. Aside from that I have massive amounts of PS, Xbox, Sega etc. stuff that I don't really care for and should probably just sell in order to save space. Also have a bunch of old PC games that I should get rid of, but probably won't. A lot of that is early, starry-eyed pick ups from when I was just starting out, lots from in-person auctions (which have since dried up and become harder to win, the fewer common items I am looking for) or dollar a piece or less flea market buys.

When I started out my main goal was to get a complete N64 collection. By this point in time I have enough money tied up in other stuff that if I were to sell it off, I'd have the cash to just buy one. Well, if I did get that done I guess I'd be moving on SNES anyway.

I think a 360 will suit my needs just fine. Also, I'm cheap.

If it isn't a current gen game I have been focusing on Japanese games for older systems. Currently Saturn, Sega-Mega CD, PC-Engine/CD, PS1, Super Famicom & Mega Drive.

Some great titles and hidden gems in the JP catalogues that were never released in other regions.

In a very similar manner to others I too collect things I once had and once wanted.  For me that translates mostly to the 8bit to 16bit transition era with a Nintendo focus.  Now I've stated here before that many moons ago I had gotten really burned out on collecting simply because I didn't lay out a few guide rules.  These vary from system to system.  For example, I prefer my NES carts only, no box or manual-keeps it cheap and uniform.  Same for SNES. Genesis and TG16 are quite different in that I want the box and manuals for uniformity but also because those companies had the foresight not to use cardboard.  I'm also not going for any complete sets because I do this collecting thing for my own pleasure and is not to be stressed out about.

Super Nintendo mostly. I'm not really in the "collecting" mindset anymore these days (I've actually come to dislike that side of the whole thing quite a bit), but SNES is the one that I still feel that way the most about, wanting to buy games that are only boxed and in good condition etc. Mostly just because it's my favourite console I guess.

No focus, really. Quality over quantity, I guess. There are still games I would like to get for the PS1, PS2, and PS3, so I guess that, too(?). I’m not actively looking for anything at the moment, though.
