Title: Do You Have Fun When Trying An NES Game For The First Time?
Post by: oldgamerz on January 06, 2019, 10:07:42 pm
I often don't like to buy NES  Nintendo Entertainment Systems games because of how unfair most of them are. I personally do like some of the sport games on the NES like "Blades Of Steel", "ice Hockey" "Double Dunk". But I really never was much into 2D platformers or really good at any shoot ups

I also like "Legend Of Zelda"

What are your thoughts?  Do You Have Fun When Trying An NES Game For The First Time?

I have a blast. It's what got me into Castlevania and made it my favorite game series. Nothing like the good ol' 3rd generation.

The importance of the NES and several of its games cannot be overstated, however I feel like most of its current reputation and what fuels its diehard collectorism is nostalgia. I was born during the early years of the NES and was at least old enough to remember it when I was very young, but I never owned one until the late 90s after buying one at a garage sale along with some games. So as someone who has no nostalgia for it, I agree that various well known games on the console are fairly cheap, have poor gameplay, or some other flaw that many might give a pass due to their nostalgia goggles. I have my own nostalgia goggles that taint my opinions of various games and consoles as well though. For example I adore the N64 and the majority of its library, which is crazy talk to many, ironically a lot of NES/SNES diehards. This bias and sentimentality is something all retro video game collectors have, some of us just have them for different consoles. With that said, most of the must have NES games I think are okay to amazing. There are a handful that I think are broken pieces of crap, but I'd have a hard time picking out 10 of these games from a list of top 100 NES games. The NES is not my favorite Nintendo console, in fact it's probably one of my least favorite, but it's still a great console with a lot of great games and I certainly respect the importance of the NES to video gaming as a whole.

Some games can be fun, but alot aren't.  I'd probably say there are more games that have aged poorly than those that have aged well, as there were alot of issues with the old games from performance, bad design, design limitations, etc...In general I don't particularly love returning to NES era, which makes the current Switch Online service very annoying.

I grew up with the NES, so it's one of the reasons I'm still an avid gamer. Though, I can't recall the last time I played an NES game. Most anything I've played from that era is a remake on the IOS, PSP, or GBA.

I think bikingjahuty stated it the best.

Like any other system, it depends on the game. Some games are fun as soon as you start playing like Super Mario Bros. or Contra. Some games are terrible like Conan or Back to the Future. And some games you have to learn what the game wants from you and then it's fun like Battle of Olympus or Castlevania II.

And it's not just nostalgia, like others have suggested. I can get an NES game I've never played, and have fun with it. Just bought Magician for the NES, since I never heard of it. Always happy to check out a new action-RPG.

Ok so I'll be honest, I own a multi cart that has all the levels unlocked and has over 450 games on it. I do like the games on that cartridge but because I have a vast majority on that cartridge, I am hesitant to buy any actual copies. Yea I know it's fake and a lot of games are probably home brews, but it is not like Action 52 was at least as far as I can tell

Nothing wrong with that.  Old games can be hard to get or costly to buy and if it just simply wanting to play them, it's the best way to do it.  I want to play through Little Samson entirely some day, but I will never buy an actual copy of the game, I will just emulate it.

I'll often put a game on my Everdrive and try it out to see if it's worth buying. A lot of NES games can be a fraction of the price if you buy the Famicom version too. I have FC Genjin (Bonk), Bucky O'Hare, DuckTales 2 Famicom carts that I adapt to an NES's 72 pin and they play just fine on my systems. They were each sub 20 dollars when I bought them a few years ago.

I still have a lot of fun playing NES games. It was my first console, but back in the day I only had a handful of games. Since 2011-ish I've played loads of games for the first time and I've enjoyed plenty of them, so it can't be nostalgia for me liking those as I hadn't played them before.

This.  The original question is way too broad.  There are 700+ games, you can't make a sole statement regarding their quality or fun factor.

Being born in Brazil, I had much more contact with the Master System than with the NES (actually, the first time I ever saw an NES was many years after the SNES was already on the market).
Having said that, I often have a blast discovering new things for the Famicom/NES and, even though I was raised as a Sega kid, I can say that I've a lot more respect towards the NES now than I used to have back in the day.
Even though I still like the Master System's library much more than that of the NES, in the last couple of years I've played, for the first time, games such as Akumajo Special: Boku Dracula-Kun (Kid Dracula), Splatterhouse: Wanpaku Graffiti and Ai Senshi Nicol that have become some of my favorites of the generation.

Yes. I have fun. Lots of fun.

I know there are a bunch of stinkers on the NES, but there are some of the best games of all time on that system. Just like any system. There are a bunch of duds, but mixed in there are some real hidden gems.

Sometimes I have fun but most of the time I don't like the new games I try.  I only like the staples.  But I have had a few odd games that are amazing.  I highly reccomend Felix the Cat :).  It's an amazing side scroller with awesome power ups and visuals and an iconic character.  It's a must play.  But it is a tad expensive around 60 dollars.

Absolutely, it was my first console. Sadly, I never owned any games since all I played were rentals, and not that many. When I discovered emulation, I tried an NES emulator and soon discovered many great titles and enjoyed the time I spent trying them, and still do. To this day I still discover new games that I never knew about, particularly imports. It makes me feel like a kid in a candy store. The same can be said about the SNES.

Honestly? No. I enjoy the NES, well, the popular games, and the games I played back in the day, but it's very hard for me to get into an NES game without that nostalgia factor. SNES, on the other hand, gives me nostalgia just playing a game I haven't played.
