General / Re: Which Atari 2600 is which?

The molding in the back is also different around the controller ports

Also the bottom shell is a lot thicker on the H6R which accounts for the weight difference. There's a few things internally different such as two .22uf Film capacitors in the power supply section where the L6R only has one. The 7805 in mounted on a finned heat sink where as the L6R is only has it screwed down to a flat metal plate.

I've been in a Mega Man mood recently and had a bit of accumulated PayPal monies to play around with.

On Steel Battalion, do you have to have that crazy controller set-up? Or can you actually play it on a regular XBox controller? Anyone know?
It actually does requires that special controller to play it. They are currently going for $200+ on ebay.
The game and the controller originally retailed for $200 when it came out and didn't sell very well because of that. I've read that the game didn't turn a profit and just broke even for what it cost to make it.

If your running Linux chances are it's either Ubuntu or Mint as they are the most popular. Try installing it from the software center. Just launch it from the ''start menu'' and type in flash.

I have actually purchased one of these ridiculously cheap Chinese ones just for the hell of it. They're just a little over a dollar and the one I got has been surprisingly reliable even one year later. Although I'll never trust it to hold a save of a RPG or any game that requires a huge time investment.

The way I feel about most homebrews is that they always seem to be priced around $60, and the vast majority of them like this game just don't look good enough to see me paying that. I got tons and tons of legitimate “retro'' games on my wish list and can buy a lot more and for the money than that.

Hardware and Tech / Re: Fixing RROD Xbox 360's( original fat models)
« on: November 06, 2014, 08:15:26 pm »

Honestly, If you replace the X-Clamp, Heatsink, Thermal paste and resolder. You'll be able to fix it but If you take shit care of it then yeah it'll probably break again.

Owner of a Xbox 360 Pro (Premium) since 08 and never has it RROD on me or required any internal fixing.
I've never owned a 360 myself because I caught wind of their dubious reliability before I was ready to take the plunge into the seventh gen. Yet I have friends who had them and they would always come to me to try and fix them. I have tried all of those things you've mentioned. I even tried replacing the stock fans with more powerful ones to no avail. Some people do get lucky and never have a problem but it's a crap shoot with those original models.

There really is no real way of fixing them at least not permanently. Re-flowing the solder can can fix it for a month or two maybe even longer if you're lucky, yet the problem will always eventually reoccur.

Classic Video Games / Re: The Game Gear - To Buy, or Not to Buy?
« on: October 21, 2014, 06:59:40 pm »
Finding fully working working Game Gears can be a little tricky. The capacitors Sega used were defective and most have failed by now. When this happens the screen won't display a picture or the sound will go out or both. Even if you find one that works most of the capacitors in it are still likely bad. There's just one capacitors that's absolutely critical labeled C54 when that one fails that's when you loose picture. So if you have the resources I'd recommend buying one that has been recapped or have one recapped.

The rechargeable battery is a must.
If you're talking about the Game Gear battery packs don't even bother with them. There's no way 20+ year old battery cells are going to hold much of a charge. You can replace the cells in them but you could also just use rechargable AA's. So I don't see any point in messing around with them.

??? Never heard of any Clam shell/Rental variation. You'd probably have much better luck asking this on the dedicated ColecoVision sub forum on AtariAge.

Classic Video Games / Re: crappiest system you ever owned?

The original model GBA.  How completely dark and unviewable those screens are is ridiculous. You literally need to play the thing directly under a lamp just to make out anything. How Nintendo looked at that and thought yeah that would be acceptable is mind boggling.
Back then, though, having the pause button on the console was a relatively new thing. A LOT of pre-NES consoles had the pause button on the console itself, including the most popular pre-NES system: Atari 2600.

So for being 1986, it really wasn't strange at all having the pause button on the system. Pain in the butt? Yeah, in retrospect. They just were right behind the changing times.
The 2600 didn't have any pause option. Although a few games used the Color/BW switch to pause. The Intellivision is the earliest console that I can think off to have not only a pause option but one that is triggerable with the controller. Pressing either 1+9 or 3+7 on the keypad will pause most Intellivision games.

More metal thanks to a trade with a fellow member on comiccollectorlive.com:

And does anyone here like a little renaissance faire in their metal? I got the best of album ("Memories of a Time to Come", such a cool name for a best of album) by Blind Guardian, and one of their early albums:

Good picks there. Blind Guardian is indeed awesome. If you're just getting in to them check out Nightfall in Middle earth and Imaginations from the other side their best albums IMO.
Also If you haven't checked out Demons and Wizards yet you definitely should. It's a side project between Blind Guardians lead singer Hansi Kürsch and Jon Schaffer of Iced Earth.

Seventh Son is my favorite Maiden album next to Somewhere in Time.

Been wanting a Dogbone NES controller forever. But all I keep running across are the after-market third-party reproductions. I want a Nintendo one.
Yeah those third party ones stink. I tried a Tomee one in the past and the second I took it out of the box the cord fell out of the controller. It wasn't even soldered onto the control board. I then soldered it onto the controller board and it worked for a month before it just inexplicably died.
Also the d-pad was cheap garbage. I guess  to save on plastic they didn't even mold the half ball that's on the bottom of a regular NES d-pad that allows it to rock from the center. You could actually press the center of the d-pad in and press all four directions at once.

You can find the real ones in the $20 range. Trust me it's worth the extra money.
