News / Re: Matt's ToDo List
« on: March 19, 2013, 04:39:58 pm »
Will the new site give us developers some fun or is that a future todo after the new site has been stable for a while? There's so many ideas and implementations that I think a lot of users could benefit from. If you had some sort of "plugin" feature where users could pick and choose what features to add then you could keep the basics simple. Would be pretty easy to implement, let me know if you need help with that.

Oh no, not Gametrailers!... Oh, game trailers, carry on then :P

Good job, seems to work great, I'll be using that. Thanks!

Thanks for giving it a try! I hope you enjoy it.

This looks cool but I don't use Chrome :(

I'v attached the script to this post for firefox and IE users as well. Just note that you will need some sort of user script addon. For example, grease monkey for FF.

P.S I have NOT tested this on any other browser except for Chrome however it should work. Please let me know.

Topic: Development: Unofficial Addon: Game Trailers Added

Long Description:
I have silently been working on a few projects aimed specifically at vgcollect.com. The latest release of mine is an UNOFFICIAL release for Game Trailers support. By UNOFFICIAL I mean that it was NOT created by the developers of vgcollect.com - it was developed by ME aka bugs181 aka Levi. This version is slower than if the support were added directly by matt. The reason for this is rather technical. In lamens terms it's because I don't have access to matt's code and can't add the support natively so I have to use work-arounds like my own server, database, and etc. I did however develop this to be extended and implemented with ease by matt - so if there is enough user demand for a feature built right into the website, give matt a shoutout in the Site Feedback thread and express your feelings on the Game Trailers addon support.

Help Wanted:
Before we get started I wanted to give a friendly shout out to any other developers or web designers here lurking around on the forum. If matt has no interest in designing this further or doesn't have the time - I will need somebody to come up with a creative design. My programming skills are pretty decent but html is my Kryptonite. I absolutely dislike it very much and we have a fairly mutual relationship with one another. Hit me up on here or PM if you have interest in helping with this project.

Features:
  • View available game trailers via YouTube embed.
  • Fancy popup that plays youtube video automatically when clicked.
  • YouTube player controls disappear while watching trailer.

Features to Come:
  • Dynamically show more videos if requested.

How to get Addon:
Install link: Game Trailers Addon
NEW: This addon is now officially on the Chrome Web Store.
In Google Chrome, the above link will take you to the Chrome Web Store.

Removal Instructions:
In the off chance you don't like this addon. Whether you think it slows vgcollect.com down too much or whatever the reason may be. I can't stop you from wanting to get rid of it. To remove it just follow a few simple steps.
Open your extensions settings by typing the following in your address bar: chrome://extensions/
Locate the extension and click on the little trash can located on the right side.

IMPORTANT: This addon is heavily dependant on javascript and flash. They must be enabled for this to work properly.

This project is in ALPHA stages. There will most likely be bugs and problems to work out. Just post here if something isn't working or not working as expected. It has only been tested on Google Chrome web browser.

Didn't have time to search the thread. I have a suggestion. What about submission badges? IE: When a user creates/submits so many items. 100, 500, 1000 etc

Site Feedback / Re: longer titles
« on: July 02, 2012, 07:35:57 pm »
It looks like you added too much.
thats why we need longer titles

I'd have to disagree. The way the database works - people think that the database size is only the size of data that is added, however this is untrue. Longer titles require a longer length field in the database and ALL titles regardless of their length will use this much data.
Lets throw some imaginary numbers out there to explain.

IE: If the database was set to use 60 characters long, each table row would be roughly 4KB long EVEN if they were empty.
Say you added the game: Crysis
One would think that this would only use 6 bytes (characters) of database room, but that's not how it works.
Even with the title being only 6 bytes, it would still use the full 60 character length causing each table row to be 4KB

These numbers are purely speculation but that's how a database works. The database / table row size all depends on the amount of fields and their default length values.

Increasing the max title size just for the benefit of a FEW games would be such a waste of database space. Try using some abbreviations in your title or find an alternative name that users will recognize without the full title length. Thanks.

I really like the sound of this, I'll have to figure out how to use it on Firefox.

Sorry for the double post but I felt it necessary. To install User Scripts on Firefox, click the following link, install Greasemonkey, and then continue with the above instructions in the first post just as if it were Chrome.

I can say with almost complete certainty say that VGC will never have a chat room or shoutbox.

okay, well that pretty much sums it up. xD It makes sense and I was just tossing some ideas around. Back to other feature ideas for the collection stuff. =)

Thanks for your hard-work & contributions to this site; Bugs  ;)

You're welcome. I appreciate your gratitude. =)

I really like the sound of this, I'll have to figure out how to use it on Firefox.

Thanks for working on these extra features!

Not  a problem! Just doing my small part. matt has a lot on his plate and it may not seem like it but this website takes a lot of work adding new features and fixing bugs and such. On top of that he ALWAYS goes the extra mile just to give users what they need. This is my way of helping him out. If you havn't yet - tell matt how much you appreciate his hard work in the Site Feedback section. That goes a long way!

Interesting! I like this.
I'm going to give it a try and let you know how it works out :)

Please do! I'm interested in how it will work out for everyone. If it doesn't seem to be working for you then let me know and i'll find a solution for you.

How are you going to deal with carts, cib, sealed and vga? What I mean is that a vga game can really offset the price of a cart.

Sure, later I could actually expand this functionality more. Especially once we get an official developers corner with the code base. Right now, just the average prices are gathered regardless of condition or whatnot.

I do have a couple suggestions though; ever thought about a "Social" section of this forum? Or is "General" filling the spot that a social forum would fill?

I'm not quite sure about the official developers of VGC but I have actually thought about developing a solution for the social experience. I'm thinking of a messenger service that will go hand in hand with the Friends List, a shoutbox, and a chat room. Let me know if you have any other ideas or suggestions.

Interesting! Keep em coming!

Thank you. Just as an important note though. These are all temporary until matt can come up with a more permanent solution for developers to contribute to the project. It should be noted that matt has personally shown interest in this particular addon so it may only be a matter of time before you see this showing up in the official category.

Hands down.. i'm thinking Kid Chameleon and ToeJam and Earl both for Genesis. Probably a few others that i'm not thinking of right now.

*googles xbox 360 emulator for pc* nope nothing... I'm not going to argue semantics...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Video_game_console_emulator

Just because you can't emulate the xbox 360 with a computer application doesn't mean you should dismiss it. The topic is about the legitimacy of using an emulator to play games you do not own. The xkey is just one of MANY devices that allows you to do such a thing. My point still stands. You can emulate the disc drive on an xbox to play ISO files. The same concept of using a PC application to play rom files. There is NO difference besides the type of hardware the emulator runs on.
