General / Re: 52 Games Challenge 2021
« on: January 11, 2021, 07:46:48 am »
Returning as no longer someone who buys games and doesn't play them, but someone who plays games and doesn't buy any bc I'm broke as fuck. Tmi but shoutouts to my adhd meds reigning in my impulse spending and giving me a resemblance of an attention span. Couldn't attempt this without you bby

The organizer in me is loving seeing these different layouts. The lazy-ass in me is appreciating that I don't have to come up with something creative myself.

Green italicized games are beaten. Challenge games are ones I don't necessarily expect to (be able to) finish.

52 Games 2021
1. Kirby's Dream Course (SNES) [01/08 - ]
2. Final Fantasy VIII (PS1) [01/09 - ]
3. Final Fantasy X (PS2) NSG [02/05 - ]
4. Atelier Marie: The Alchemist of Salburg (PS2) [01/29 - 02/05]

Challenge Games
Devil May Cry (PS1)
Ninja Gaiden (NES)
Final Fantasy X (PS2) NSGNS and/or Rikku SCC (won't count towards the 52 total, but want to mark it off)
Touhou 10 ~ Mountain of Faith (PC) (with or without continuing)

Updates:
[02/05] So I wasn't going to count my FFX NSG run since I'd started that before the beginning of the year, but I accidentally my laptop so I have to start over qq. So I might as well put it on the list. I put a couple of other FFX runs under the Challenge list, and was only going to count the first one I did, but since I'm starting over NSG I'm going to count that one towards the 52 and any additional runs will be extra. Can you tell I really like this game?

General / Re: Your In Game Names Or High Score Names
« on: June 29, 2018, 03:20:45 pm »
First playthrough, I make something up or use a cool name from an anime, book, or another game.
After a few runs, I go for something funny that goes with the text (e.g. "my dude, ").

For arcade games
High score/good personal score: DAN from the name I had to come up with in Chinese class years ago.
Decent score/just missed the high score: DAN or CFY, "Comin for ya". My brother came up with it, to make the record holder quake in their boots knowing that their status is in jeopardy but because of the limited characters you wouldn't know that so it's really my own personal joke.
Embarrassing score: sometimes I own up to it, sometime it's AAA.

"Well, as long as my collection outlives me."
Thiiiis just in, scientists have found a reliable way to achieve a longer life span with the help of this new...
"Fudge."

Call me crazy, but that's what I'm worried about, unironically.

There are 5 games. I take 1. Now how many do I have?

Video Game Database Discussion / Re: Need Help Naming Cover Variants
« on: June 22, 2018, 03:56:43 am »
Maybe short descriptors?
Like "Top Logo"/"Lower Logo", "Tribute Logo"/"No Tribute Logo", "Limited Run Logo"/"No Limited Run Logo", "Realistic"/"Cartoon", "Bubbly"/"Painted", "Winking"/"Pointing", "Open Eyes"/"Closed Eyes".

I wouldn't complain about an arbitrary "Variant 1" "Variant 2" though.

Never seen the store sell cases-only, with the exception of generic ones (like those clear N64 cases), so it looks like I might've just missed out on a steal. Wouldn't have minded toughing out the gameplay for the price I saw it for, but not $300.

Thanks a lot for the help you all, I'm not all too familiar with the PS2 market so I didn't know what to think. Never really bothered to price check at that store since they're really good about pricing fairly, but I guess I should check for deals too. Lesson learned and all.

Some months ago, I saw the game "Rule of Rose" for the PS2 at a retro game store. Looked interesting, reviews said everything but the gameplay was good, but decided not to get it at that time.
Now, this store keeps expensive games behind glass. Games $50-$60 are almost always behind glass, and games more than that always are. But I could have sworn I saw Rule of Rose sitting on an open shelf, somewhere around $40. Multiple times too, I feel that I've seen it sitting there.

But recently it came to my attention that that store got in another copy of the game, and after looking around online it seems that the game goes for around $250-$300. Confirmed today that the game is $300 at the retro game store. I could have sworn, sworn that it wasn't that much not long ago. I mean, I wouldn't have even considered picking it up if it was labeled at such a price.

So did the price suddenly go up recently, did I miss a prime opportunity to snag it for cheap, or am I crazy?

Maybe a couple games like Sonic 1 and Kid Klown in Crazy Chase casually, but I'm not really good enough at any (non-automatic scrolling) games to compete or anything.

Before anyone gets too butt hurt, this is my opinion and you are completely allowed to have whatever opinion you want about Speed Runs, but without further delay here are my thoughts.

I think speed running, while it gives certain games extra value in being able to play them in a way that wasn't necessarily intended, is typically dumb as shit since either speed running decreases the value of the game significantly (story is completely ignored, as are a lot of parts that make the game great or speed running is most a contest of who can exploit loose code in a game better to get to the end. I have little to no respect for the hobby, and think it is just dumb.

I kinda get your thinking. To be honest, there's quite a few games where if I were to seriously speedrun it, it would probably kill the enjoyment for me. If someone can run through their favorite RPG again and again even with skipping all the cutscenes and much of the game, more power to them, but there's definitely a few speedrunners who don't even seem to enjoy what they're doing that much anymore. At some point people should limit themselves. But as far as watching speedruns go, it's kind of like a showcase of glitches, which I think is kinda neat. People have really dug deep into understanding a game at a technical level to find exploits, and as someone into computers and programming, I find it interesting. Glitchless runs are also cool, since it's more about pure skill and mastery of the game. If one is decent enough at the game, it's also fun to casually go as fast as you can, as sin2beta said, since it's not just about how fast you are, but how good you are.

They're just so good.
Sega's is also cool, but it's been posted already.

A super computer that cannot only emulate every game ever made and yet to come, but has slots for every cartridge and kind of disc, as well as customizable parts to make new ports for new kinds of cartridges and discs. Same for controllers and memory cards. Fully realized VR, built in arcade sticks and buttons, and an Altimit OS-esque desktop.

Alternatively, a console just powerful enough for hobbyists and circles to make games for (around PS1/N64-previous quality at best). I know there's been attempts at this kind of thing, but I want one that is actually successful. I want to buy new games that aren't AAA or Steam indie stuff. If someone could pull this off, it'd be amazing.

Galaga, I only quit when I run out of quarters or juice.
Tetris, especially Tetris Worlds on the PS2 since it seems it just keeps adding extra time to the time limit for eternity. I still don't understand why exactly.
Yu-Gi-Oh games, especially the GBA ones.
Oblivion, I'm hesitant re-install it.
Princess Maker 2 until I finally got the Princess ending. Completely dropped it after that, even though I could go for other cool endings.
Back when I played Attorney Online with a certain group in its prime time, I would stay up every weekend playing it, and for many days if I was on break. Games could go anywhere from 2 to 6 or 7 hours, a few special ones even a little longer. Thank god for laptops I can take with me to the kitchen and bathroom.
Was also super into Luna Online and Eden Eternal, but LO shut down a while ago and EE is as good as dead, unfortunately. I still play on a private server on Runescape, but I usually play while doing something else, so I don't know if it counts.

Usually turkey or ham, but this year my uncle made fantastic roast beef. The sides change every year, with the exception of hawaiian rolls. Those are too good to not include.

Pre-Wii Mario games are considered easy?! Maybe I'm worse at platformers than I thought...

Anyway, Mickey and Minnie's Magical Adventure 2. It can be beaten in not much more than an hour, but it's a lot of fun with a buddy.

Does co-op Super Smah TV with my older brother count? We've played through it multiple times, getting all they keys and question marks, and then again in turbo mode.

I've had the high score on two local Galaga machines for a while now, but compared to people online I'm a total noob.

Reminder that mitochondria make crazy ladies who want demon babies and are therefore objectively the worst part of the cell.
