Classic Video Games / Re: Cartridge Console Wars

Make love not war man...
I never really understood console wars, I loved them all. In the 70s we only had a Pong console. In the 80s I had an Odyessey2, Atari 2600, and a Coleco Adam. The 90s started with my NES and ended with a Jaguar and an N64. But through it all I played and still bought games for, all of them. In 1992 when they finally discontinued the 2600 (it had shared the shelves with SNES, Genesis, TG16 etc...) I still bought a soccer game for the old Atari despite having an NES and was still on the hunt for Colecovision and Odyessey2 games through video game specialized mail-order catalogs of the time.

Friends would fight over the Sega/Nintendo nonsense. I just made note of who had what and made sure I had a chance to play them all.

This has to be one of the best replies to the thread.  In the end, I know I just want to play games that I enjoy and I don't care what console they are on.

In the past, I could only have one console at a time, now I can pretty much have all the ones I want.  While Sony has the most games I want to play this generation, I also enjoy my Xbox and Switch as there are great games on both of them that I can only play on those system.

I grew up with an Atari 2600 and right now I'm mainly focused on collecting for the Atari 2600 and 7800.  That said, I will pick up interesting games other systems I own when I come across them.  I'm just not actively in the hunt at the moment for games on other systems.

I don't see a brand dominating like Atari or Nintendo unless one of the big three drops out of the console market.  That could happen, but it is not likely anytime soon. I also don't see PC gaming taking over from consoles.  For most people, the era of powerful desktop computers is over.  Their phone or tablet fills all their computing needs.

While I'm intrigued to see what the Ataribox ends up being, I not holding my breath that it will be anything good.

Oh boy, if you want 2600, I have a big ole box full of games I've been trying to get rid of.  I can make you a heck of a deal.

PM sent

PS1 collecting is pretty expensive now, however if you're mostly looking for games like Final Fantasy, Metal Gear Solid, or Wipeout, it can be very affordable.

Thanks for the welcome.  And with the PS1, I'll likely be sticking to the affordable stuff for now :)

Is the Vita a commercial failure in North America and Europe?  Yes.  Supposedly it still sells well in Asia.

I love my Vita, it is a great system and if you love quirky games from Japan and Indies (which I do), it is an excellent system that is still alive.  Games are still coming out for it and until the Switch came out, it was the nicest handheld you could get.

Unfortunately Sony dropped the ball on the Vita.  It was a bit too expensive, had a back touchscreen nobody wanted, and those horribly expensive memory cards.  When the Vita stumbled out of the gate in North America due to those things, Sony just gave up on it.

Bottom line, great handheld that just didn't do well in the marketplace.  I'm still very glad I got mine!

I grew up with the Atari 2600.  Definitely my favorite console of the 70s/early 80s.  ColecoVision comes in second place for me in this time period.

I skipped the NES / SNES / Sega generation.  What gaming I did at that time was on the computer.

90s onward - Sony, Sony, Sony.  I have some love for the Xbox 360 and One as well, but as a fan of JRPGs, Sony is where it is at.

Hello all, Keith from Virginia here.

Wanting to relive a bit of my youth, I setup a Retropie.  However, after playing it for awhile I wanted to have the sensation of having the real thing, having a console, pushing in a cart and playing it on a TV.  :D

I grew up in the 70s / early 80s so the system of my youth was the Atari 2600.  While video games have come a long way since then, I still have a soft spot for the Atari and it is what I started collecting for.  I recently picked up an Atari 7800 and have a small assortment of 2600 and one 7800 games for it.

Gaming was pretty much an on the computer thing for me during the mid 80's and early 90's.  I had a Sega Master System for awhile, but never connected with that system.  I pretty much missed the NES and SNES eras of gaming.  I did get back into it with the PS1 and I've owned every Sony console since the PS1.  I have a lot of fond memories of all PlayStations and I'm starting to collecting for them as well.

I'm looking forward to chatting about games with everyone here and if anyone has some Atari stuff for sale, send me a PM.  My collection is extremely small at the moment, so it will be awhile before I do any selling or trading.  (though I do have an extra 8gb Vita card I don't need).
