Most recently I beat Jake Hunter Detective Story: Memories of the Past on the DS.

Now I'm currently playing Glass Rose on PS2. I'm trying to finish Glass Rose so that I can say I've completed every CiNG adventure game.

After that I plan to return to Xenoblade Chronicles. I've got about 23 hours in it currently.

It's gonna be an Android console for hipsters.

I love the Layton games though those often feel more like standard puzzles rather than a point and click sort of adventure.

I've beaten Curious Village and Diabolical Box. They were fairly fun, but I agree they're not really adventure games in a traditional sense.

I'm still playing Xenoblade Chronicles off and on, it's fairly fun so far (currently 21 hours in), but I wouldn't say the game has "hooked me". I just play it when I have a significant chunk of free time and enough energy to invest. I certainly enjoy the scenic vistas and exploration, but the combat system does nothing for me.

Outside that, I'm trying to find a decent DS adventure game to play. I've already beaten Hotel Dusk, Last Window, Trace Memory, Again: Eye of Providence, Unsolved Crimes, Ghost Trick, Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney, and Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney − Justice for All among others.

Although I really enjoyed the first Ace Attorney, I had to force myself through Justice for All (a precipitous drop in quality from the first game). I was trying to get through Trials & Tribulations but the amount of character rehash and juvenile writing just ruined it. I especially cannot stand Maya and her unceasing commentation every other second. I simply don't understand why Ace Attorney 1 was so good, but 2 and 3 faltered considerably. It's like Shu Takumi just choose to focus completely on the wrong things in the sequels. However, I am going to give Apollo Justice a try, hopefully having a new director and new writers will fix the issues 2 & 3 had.

I've also been messing with Jake Hunter: Memories of the Past, but not enough to render a verdict yet.

to me, the best 3D platforming at the time was not on the PS1, but the N64
I wouldn't say you're wrong, but there are some really great 3D platformers on PS1. By that I mean Ape Escape, Klonoa, Jumping Flash 1 & 2, and Tail Concerto just to name a few. I never enjoyed Crash though, I found all the Crash games to be terribly overrated.

A lot less ports and a lot more exclusives.

I still enjoy JRPGs (and JSRPGs), but as a middle aged adult I can only play them so long before I have to take a break. I start getting antsy around two hours, and if I make it three hours I just have to do something else. But that applies to any genre really.

The one genre I was crazy about when I was in my late teens / early twenties was FPS. These days I am not nearly into FPS as I used to be. I might beat one or two FPS a year, but I have nowhere near the fervor for the genre as I did in my youth. Part of it is likely burnout, you can only play so many FPS games before you've seen all the tricks. The other is surely my FPS lust was being fueled by youthful angst back then.

I also find it harder to get into point and click adventure games these days. As a kid I loved those so much. As an adult with very limited gaming time, I run out of patience pretty fast.

Finally started playing Tecmo's Deception.  Pretty interesting.  I might make this a slow play so I don't get burned out, so I can make it through the whole franchise over the rest of the year or so.
The first game is pretty rough, being first person and all. The sequel greatly improves the gameplay, the third greatly improves the graphics, and then a lot of people forget about Trapt on the PS2, so don't miss that one. I haven't played Deception IV yet, but I've got it on Vita. Cool series.

I've own an OLED Vita for years and I love the thing. I totally realize it's not a mass market demographic pleaser. But as someone who loves niche games, especially Japanese niche games, this thing is great. I own 80 or so games for it, and there's a dozen more I want on the horizon. I can admit to being a Vita fanboy, and I can also admit I understand why this device doesn't appeal to everyone. The only thing keeping it alive are all the niche Japanese releases, but that genre is a lucrative angle that's still producing profit.

After having owned it since 2012, I've finally gotten around to playing Xenoblade Chronicles. It's one of those well regarded JRPGs that every gamer I personally know's already played and beaten. I suppose I was hesitant to start the game due to its length. However at 12 hours in now, I'd say for the most part the experience is living up to the hype. There are some QoL changes I would have liked regarding menus and GUI aspects, but the core exploratory nature is sublime. Also the characters and plot's actually maintaining my interest (a rarity for JRPGs). I know I still have a long way to go (not that I'm complaining) but thus far Xenoblade Chronicles does a lot more right than wrong.

I'm across the board. The oldest game I've beat this year is from 1989, and the newest from 2017. Last year I beat a game from 1978 (Beneath Apple Manor). I find merit in all ages of gaming, each epoch has its own strengths and weaknesses.

General / Re: What games do you plan to beat this summer?
« on: June 27, 2017, 10:15:31 pm »
I started this summer out with a big wish list of games to beat. I originally went with a "summer theme", meaning tropical or ocean in aesthetic. I managed to beat all these before I burned out:

Everblue 2 (PS2)
Greendog The Beached Surfer Dude! (Genesis)
Submarine Attack (Master System)
Deep Blue (TG16)
Dive: The Medes Island Secret (Wii)
Battle Shark (Arcade)
ThunderJaws (Arcade)
The Little Mermaid (NES)

The only other "ocean" themed game I plan to beat this summer is Aquanaut's Holiday: Hidden Memories on PS3. But I'm still waiting on my copy to arrive from Japan.

Ultimately I wish the Hotel Dusk / Last Window series would have gotten a third entry on DS. It would have been perfect as a trilogy. There are some unanswered questions from both games, which could have been answered in a third game.

I would have appreciated an Endless Ocean series continuation on 3DS.

I wish the NES Bionic Commando had gotten a SNES sequel. Super Bionic Commando should have existed.
