I was almost beside myself with joy when I first learned of this and it not being a cheap emulation device. I immediately ordered the anniversary edition and 8 other games (basically all but OverTop). Yes, the Ultimate bundle was slightly cheaper but I wanted the white console and Slug cart, and after waiting 36 years, I figured to hell with it let’s get the one you want.
It wasn’t intended for only affluent gamers, but that’s all who could afford it. These were quite literally arcade perfect conversions back from a time when it was a pipe dream. The entire reason SNK came out with the NeoGeo CD was to offer up their games on a much cheaper medium, knowing full well the cost of cart production (yes cost, not priced to demand or to target affluent buyers) put their AES games out of reach of most gamers.
You don’t have to like the console or its owner base, but those are some pretty hot takes.
My gripes are with the console itself. The console was never worth it's price to me. Not now, not in the retro market and certainly not at its original launch which was more than a used car at the time. Anything marketed as being for the "affluent gamer" is more than likely propagandist trash.Even in 1990, a used car at 650 dollars would have barely been worth the tank of gas in it.
