Everyone makes fun of Nintendo, but they seem to want to do exactly what Nintendo's doing.

yeah I have noticed they seem to be headed in that direction. Especially with the rumors about them doing a family home entertainment system type of console? Or so what some people have told me

Ugh, if May 21st rolls around and Microsoft is all like "Motion gaming! You guys like that, right?" or "Look at all of these simple games that are mostly glorified tech demos!" then I don't think I'll be buying an Xbox 720 or Xbox Infinity or whatever they're calling it. The PS4 looks alright but doesn't seem like something I absolutely have to get at launch, and if Microsoft's showing is lacking, I'll likely just upgrade my PC.

They're tablet apps that work with the actual game.

You know how in the WiiU pad you have a screen that can be used to display info and stats and whatnot? This seems to be the same thing.
No, I know that's what smartglass apps typically are... just companion apps, but this Castle Crashers app... the description they wrote up is specifically for it, and it makes it sound like a game.

Quote from: Standard Castle Crashers Description:
Unlock the full version of Castle Crashers and start your journey into a world of magic and mystery! Battle your way across frozen tundra’s, deadly lava fields, and rival kingdoms in search of your kidnapped princess in this epic adventure. Eliminate your enemies with over 20 unlockable characters, 40 weapons to customize your hero with, and an arsenal of combos and magical attacks to choose from. Adventure together like never before - up to 4 can team up on the same console or over Xbox LIVE!

Quote from: Smartglass Castle Crashers Description:
Hack, slash and smash your way to victory in this red hot arcade adventure from the award-winning development studio, The Behemoth! Featuring hand-drawn characters, Castle Crashers delivers unique hi-res illustrated visuals like nothing you’ve ever seen before. Play with up to three friends locally or over Xbox LIVE and discover the mind-boggling magic and mystery in the amazing world we have created just for you. Save your princess, defend your kingdom, and crash some castles! With over 20 unlockable characters, 40 weapons to customize your hero with, and an arsenal of combos and magical attacks to choose from.

I'm infinitely curious about it. Was just wondering if anybody has actually tried it out.

Looking on Xbox.com, I've come across some games that have a smartglass version available.

The first one I saw was for Castle Crashers.
http://marketplace.xbox.com/en-US/Product/Castle-Crashers/7e774be1-f07e-405f-b035-edf9ae9440e0

"Available for free on Smartglass?" I thought... "That can't be right..."
The way the description reads, it sounds as though it's the actual game and not just a companion app.
The description is also different and wasn't copied from the main release of the game... it was newly written for this smartglass release.

Looking around, I also found this for Home Run Stars:
http://marketplace.xbox.com/en-US/Product/Home-Run-Stars/61f87e7a-b8ae-4a61-94b1-d5e2ba752ed2

Both of these entries' titles differ from the companion apps you'd normally see.

Such as this:
http://marketplace.xbox.com/en-US/Product/Forza-Horizon-SmartGlass-Experience/079edbde-d92a-40b1-904f-72327f47a494

or this:
http://marketplace.xbox.com/en-US/Product/Full-House-Poker-SmartGlass-Experience/b783b4c4-b948-477d-a236-81f35a32cdf7

Both of those have "SmartGlass Experience" in the title, letting you know it's not an actual game.

So... what's going on here? Does this mean they're releasing games on smartglass now? and for FREE?! o_O
I'd download it and see for myself, but I don't have a tablet to test it out on.

Site Feedback / "Dedicated Arcade" should be re-named.
« on: May 14, 2013, 09:27:30 pm »
Since the drop down list of platforms is so long, I usually just type out the first couple letters to find something.
Having seen arcade machines listed on the site before, I knew they were accepted, but when I typed "arc" the only thing that showed up was "Arcade Conversion"

As I was trying to add "Tapper" this would not be sufficient, as it was never released as a conversion kit.

It took me looking up "Galaga" and finding a machine to realize the category was named "Dedicated Arcade"

I think re-naming "Dedicated Arcade" to something like "Arcade (Dedicated)" would help out new users.

Site Feedback / Re: Is there a spot for DLC?

On the other side of things... those character skins for Street Fighter IV are just that, skins... and I agree that stuff like that shouldn't be added
Also, what the hell? is that a bacon gun?
No, that's a skin for your gun that makes it look like bacon. It doesn't fire bacon. Though if it did, it'd be an awesome weapon against people who can't eat pork. :P

I like your idea, I had thought about something similar a while back (not nearly as detailed as your own idea, though), but it's still way far off. We have to let matt finish the other stuff he's working on first, ya know.
Yeah, I can see that... I'm sure Matt wouldn't want to implement a feature just to do it all over again after the new site launches... why do all that work twice?

A few people have already begun to add DLC to the Steam category.

I've been raging for a few days, but I'm too nice to tell them to stop. :P

The way I see it, stuff that has an actual impact on extending the game - extra maps, additional gameplay modes, and sometimes characters - should be added.

Things that give you an advantage, like weapons packs, or purely cosmetic stuff, like costumes, player skin customizations, or this inexcusable cashgrab should NEVER be listed here.

I realize that this contradicts my comments about characters in post #3 of this thread a bit, but as long as it's a proper new character that isn't just a reskin, it's cool.

I don't think it contradicts anything, a new character in a fighting game is essentially a whole new part of that game... They have new movesets, new animations, it changes the balance, and definitely has meaningful gameplay changes...

On the other side of things... those character skins for Street Fighter IV are just that, skins... and I agree that stuff like that shouldn't be added
Also, what the hell? is that a bacon gun?

Hmm, maybe DLC could work like Developers and Publishers currently do (text input with auto-complete generated from previous entries), except you'd be able to add multiple.
This would let the main search bar be free of what would obviously become a super bloated DLC selection... and would still let people add in all of their owned DLC.
Perhaps there would also be some way to relegate what shows up on that auto-complete list to only show DLC for the game you're adding it to?

The problem with this is that it gets rid of a lot of the functionality of the main pages (seeing how many other people own it, release dates, box art, box text, etc.). Perhaps there would be some way to add it like mentioned above, relegate it to only appear on that specific game, in the DLC text box, but also have each entry create it's own small page. Each of those pages could be listed in the person's collection, indented underneath the main game.

Here, here's a few mockup images:

In this one and the next one, we see the adding process...

You type in something, and if it's already been added, it auto-completes.

In your collection this is how it will appear, indented. Also note the "show/hide DLC" button. This button would ideally only appear under games where you've added DLC.

You can also add notes, purchase date, and cost, just like a normal item... however, note that there isn't any boxes to check for "Cart", "box", "manual", etc... since a DLC copy of somethign wouldn't have that.
Also note how the title is presented. It would take the title of the game, add the static text " DLC - " after it... and then whatever name the user supplied for the DLC.
Perhaps this window could pop up for each item a person adds, when they add them.

If you were to click on the DLC's title in your collection you'd be brought to this page, which would look mostly like a full page... except this would not show up in the main search bar, only when adding DLC to a specific game.
Note the "Release Type" where it says "Rock Band DLC" This could be automatically generated for whatever game they added it to.
I'm not sure if we'd want the Developer & Publisher sections to automatically be taken from the game's page or not, but the platform absolutely should be copied.
You'd also be able to add box art & box text, just like any other release.

I'm also wondering if the standard submit could be used as a way of adding new entries (Even though they wouldn't show up in the main search), but then there would have to be a way of noting which game the DLC is for. Perhaps there could be an entirely separate DLC Submission page? ...or maybe once you note that something is DLC, another text box could show, and you would search for a game to add it to... The game you add would then determine the platform, developer, publisher, etc.

I think this idea is definitely superior to the other one I had. What do you guys think?

Hey, sorry to dig up this old topic, but I've also been wondering about DLC.
There seems to be a lot of it listed in the Steam category, but the lack of finding any Xbox 360 DLC got me wondering...

I do think tracking DLC is a good idea, although like you guys said... tracking stuff like online passes, avatar items, and other cosmetic stuff probably isn't necessary.

I think having a list with checkmarks or a drop down menu on the game itself might be kind of messy for games that have a ton of DLC like Rock Band... I'm sure it'd be possible to add in a search bar just for a single game's DLC, but that would also be kind of odd, I think... just from a design perspective.

If you ask me, I think the best way to handle DLC is a two step process...

First would be to set up multiple categories, like we currently do with Swag.

Some examples:
"Xbox 360 - DLC - Songs/Track Packs"
"Playstation 3 - DLC - Expansion Packs"
"Wii U - DLC - Extra/Bonus Items"
There could also be a generic category for DLC that doesn't fit in any of the other categories.

Actually, I'm not sure if multiple categories would be too much or not. Here's another alternative:
"Xbox 360 - DLC"
"Wii - DLC"
"PC- DLC"

Still though... not sure if that would break it up enough. Another alternative I was thinking of would be without a system listed, like this:
"DLC - Weapon Packs"
"DLC - Character Packs"
"DLC - Map/Level Packs"

Second would be to add something to the Style guide. Not sure exactly what you guys would want, but I think something like this might work nicely:

"Battlefield: Bad Company 2: Vietnam"
The title of the game would come first (adhering to the style guide for game titles), and much like the current method of expansion packs, the DLC's title would come after a second colon.

This way, when all is said and done, it would show up as such in search: "Battlefield: Bad Company 2: Vietnam - Xbox 360 - DLC - Expansion Packs"

What do you guys think of this idea?

I have a steam key here for Red Orchestra: Ostfront 41-45 that I got from a Humble Weekly Sale. Seeing as I already own the game, does anybody here want it instead?
Send me a PM if you're interested.

Claimed.

Hmm, yeah, I suppose noting it in the description is probably the best method for this kind of stuff. Thanks. :)

So, I'm wondering what the release dates for games that have early access should be?

I'm talking about games like Minecraft, who have a so-called "beta" period where they are still selling the game prior to any sort of "official" release.

This is the case for games such as Don't Starve, Dota 2, Arma III, and many others.

My initial thought would be to simply add the release date for the official release, seeing as how normally with these early access releases they don't even list any sort of release date aside from the upcoming one... but then that poses the question: does that actually signify when the game became available for purchase, and was widely available to everybody? Not really, no.
Should a separate page be created for the early access version? Normally when you purchase early access you're also getting the full version of the game when it is released, as well, so the only people who wouldn't own the early access version are people who purchased it afterwards (but is that enough of a differentiating factor to have two separate pages?).

Perhaps it would be useful to be able to add multiple release dates to the same game, although that could also cause some confusion for users.

What do you guys think would be the best solution for this stuff?

I get this glitch occasionally.
I'm not sure why it happens, but it seems to be that after you spend a long enough time on the submission page, something times out and it won't submit.

I used to think it was just my login timing out, which happens occasionally (obviously as a security measure), but I've had this happen to me a few times and I would still be logged in... it would simply take me back to the homepage, and my entry would not be shown under "Recent additions"
Luckilly, I'm able to hit the back button and all of the forms are still filled out, where I can simply just hit submit and it'll normally go through the second time (In fact, for me, personally, it has always went through the second time).

Perhaps this just has to do with connection speed/ reliability?
My connection isn't the most reliable, so maybe if it cuts out for a second or two, it won't send the proper code from the submit button, and therefore won't add the submission?
To be honest, I don't actually know much about programming, just most of the concepts of how it works, and barely any of the syntax.

Anyway, not a huge deal since it's so easily fixable, but this has been my own experience with it.
If it helps with debugging, I'm using Google Chrome (v26.0.1410.64 m)
