General / Re: Consoles/Handhelds That You Hate

Only really have one, the Memorex VIS. It's like a CD-i, which I actually love, except if you took away almost all the games and left it with Links Golf, two of the 3 Sherlock FMV games, and a kids interactive movie from the guys who made Myst. Everything else is edutainment. It had some good games announced for it, like the Sierra Quest games(Kings Quest, Space Quest) but they never released due to poor sales. It is truly an abomination in my collection.

Count me as one of those with too many stories of thrift/sale finds from the golden age.

The top two that come to mind, Conkers Bad Fur Day still sealed for $20 and a LaserActive with the Sega Pac S-10 for $7.

I've probably spent a couple thousand on empty boxes the past year or two... not games... boxes. Got a little out of control a few months ago, bought a couple of lots off eBay, which of course had a few boxes for games I didn't already own so I had to buy those too. Ended up spending about $2000 in 60 days.

I can't speak for anyone else here but I know why I did it. I was pretty heavily depressed, so I spent a shit ton of money trying to find happiness in my game collection. So to try and avoid this I play mental games with myself. In the past few months, I've tried to restrict my spending to a specific amount per week to keep myself from letting it get out of hand. Not just on eBay, on everything, food, gas, games, all of it. Once in awhile, I'll splurge on a new console or a game I've been wanting to add. But for the most part, I find it easy if I'm close to my weekly limit to tell myself "2 more days and if it's still there I'll get it."

That said, I am not disappointed with how my NES collection looks today. I'm completing 3-5 games a week as the boxes I need become available.

Thank you for all the responses. I was already leaning towards Retro Protection and it seems like many of you are happy with their product. Think I will continue to lean that way. Thanks again.

General / Retro Box Protectors - Who does it best?
« on: May 22, 2019, 05:12:53 pm »
Hello everyone. I tried to search for this and was unable to find any discussion comparing these plastic box protectors that I'm sure many of us use on our boxed retro gaming items.

I've been looking/researching pricing, durability and general satisfaction with the product provided by several of the vendors I know who make these boxes but I don't see a lot of discussion in the community comparing these items. Currently, I'm looking at videogameboxprotectors.com(appears to be same as Keep Em Minty on eBay), bagsunlimited.com, and retroprotection.com. I was leaning towards Retro Protection but they appear to be out of stock of many of the items I need in the quantities I need. I'm probably looking to order several hundred box protectors

So I was wondering which box protectors you have bought in the past and what you thought of them. Do you have a preference? Are there other options out there I should check out?

Thanks for the help.

General / Re: Going For Quantity Or Quality In Games
« on: May 14, 2019, 02:47:20 pm »
Mine switches depending on where I am with the collection. Last year I was closing in on 5000 games so I was buying for quantity as I wanted to hit 5000 by Xmas. Once I hit that # I immediately flipped back to quality and have been focusing on NES/SNES boxes, TG16 games(CIC) and a few major items I feel I should have already owned(Sonic Adventure 2 on DC, Contra III SNES and Final Fantasy on NES being some of my first post 5000 purchases). I'm probably going to continue to focus on boxes for loose games and adding more non-sports NES/SNES and Sega items until I get close to 7500, then I'm sure it'll be a quick transition into grabbing everything I don't own already mode.

I collect just about anything gaming related I can find. Good game, bad game, makes no difference. My friends and I do a variety of game nights and we can have fun with pretty much any bad game. Sometimes a game is fun on its own, other times it's fun to make fun of it, we find a way.

I also plan to open a video game museum someday if the opportunity should present itself. Pretty much everything will be on display and available for play.

Personally, I tend to get more excited about items I find that you just don't see. Love finding obscure and lesser known items out there like TurboGrafx or 3DO or even the stupid rare stuff like the Apple Pippin. Just about the only thing I don't really go for is the sports titles, but if it's only $1 or 2 I may pick it up just to avoid ending up paying more in the future if I'm going for a full set. I will also buy sports titles if I already have the majority of them. My OCD goes nuts if I have 2k4, 2k5, 2k6 and 2k8 but not 2k7.

I think you'd be better off using the type of DVD drive that was used in the original Xbox. Not sure what the #'s near the barcode are for, but I do remember the DVD drive being fairly important in terms of value and reliability.

iirc The Thompson drives were pretty trashy and Samsung drives were more sought after. Philips drives were average. I believe only one of these drives has a replacement belt for the tray in production as well but not sure which one. There is also a 4th and somewhat rare DVD drive from Hitachi that was used towards the end of production, looks similar to the Thompson but the opening is wider. No idea how reliable the Hitachi model is.

There were other hardware revisions(7 total) that changed other internal parts like the hard drive and video chip but I do not believe there was any specific model # that can be tied to those changes.

Might not be what you were looking for but as an Xbox collector, this is what I would use to determine different models of the base unit. Meaning I'd label them Xbox(Thompson Drive), Xbox(Phillips Drive), Xbox(Samsung Drive) or something similar.

Video Game Database Discussion / Re: CD-I packaging types
« on: August 17, 2018, 01:29:58 am »
I always see the larger packaging referred to as long boxes, same with cib 3do titles and early ps1 titles. I have seen a few games that were packaged in both styles. Tetris and Battleship are good examples of that.

chose links because these images are kinda huge, but you get the diff.

The title says it all. I would like the ability to browse a platform with unofficial/homebrew filtered out. Shouldn't be too difficult to implement.

Video Game Database Discussion / Re: Error Listings 2018

Working on a complete set for the Odyssey 2 console(it's really small, only 3 expensive games) and I noticed 2 games in the list for the US Odyssey 2 that were only released in Europe.

https://vgcollect.com/item/49486 & https://vgcollect.com/item/136459

Key sign that these are Euro games are the fact they both have the Phillips Videopac label, catapult game you can see it in the lower right corner.

I did some research looking into these to see if a US version exists and I was unable to find any.

Ok, that makes sense, but I'd be worried that data being gathered by the form isn't being sanitized. I would expect the extra space to be cleaned up before I ever get to that next page.

Site Feedback / Odd bug that only occurs immediately after login.

I've noticed this happening only on the first page that is loaded immediately after I login. If I revisit the page any time afterward it seems to correct itself.

All of the links in the sidebar seem to have a space after my name when I click on them. Say I want to browse through the Intellivision games I own, the anchor looks like this in the code...

<a href="https://vgcollect.com/Xsuicidesn0wmanx /intellivision" title="Intellivision [NA]">Intellivision [NA]</a>

Every link I click on takes me to a 404 page because of this and you'll notice the %20 from the space in the url up in the address bar.

Been noticing it for a while, didn't say anything until I could confirm that it only happens immediately after logging in.

My house is starting to resemble a library. If anything, I want a different house that is easier to implement shelving designs in.

Literally the only thing I'm looking for right now in a house. Been looking for over a year(I'm in a shitty market as well) and no matter what I check out, I can't see my game room in any of these homes. Worse, my collection has grown so big it now needs two rooms now, or one gigantic room, so it's making it even harder.

Well... I didn't say it was because of video games... I have 15 shelves in my living room just for my movie collection.

I have other collections too. X-men comics, Laserdiscs, CED/Videodisc, MTG/YGO/Pokemon cards, baseball cards, even an HD-DVD collection. I've even started a small collection for stand-up comedy vinyl records. I should just have a house custom built for all my collections.

Want some more baseball cards?  ;D

HAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHAHA... No.

I like wolff's idea of having two houses though, except I'd probably just sleep in the game room anyway.
