General / Re: Best Video Game Rental Memories
« on: June 20, 2023, 01:42:17 pm »
It was around 1990 or 91 when I discovered a small shop in a strip mall that rented video games.  It was run by a couple of personable guys, who were really into video games. :) At that time, the the local video stores, Blockbuster, Hollywood Video, I Love Video, etc., were primarily renting NES games, but this was the first shop I had seen renting games for the Sega Genesis as well as many games for PC and Mac.

My first rental from them was probably Castle of Illusion for the Sega Genesis.  My last rental from them was Ultima VII: The Black Gate for PC DOS a couple of years later.  They closed their shop shortly afterward.

The community playing the Zachtronics games seems (seemed?) pretty smart overall.

This sort of seems like Haunted House on the Atari 2600.  Is that it?

Sort of related to another recent topic, in 2020 I drove to a location about 300 miles away to pick up a used Sony Trinitron TV (32" CRT), acquired specifically to be able to play some old light gun games again.  Totally worth it. :)

For some nostalgia, at least for me, here's a video interview made around its 10th anniversary for Gamespot (reposted by youtuber OldGamerStuff).  https://youtu.be/mHqKJE5xjxE

Off Topic / Re: Activision Or EA The Retro And The Newer Games
« on: August 22, 2020, 10:08:56 pm »
I shouldn't say much about the franken-companies EA and Activision have become, but first impressions were good.

The Activision Atari 2600 games (Kaboom!, Dragster, Pitfall!, etc.) got lots of playtime.  Probably still have some of their patches somewhere.

While Pinball Construction Kit was pretty cool, EA's Adventure Construction Kit a few years later was great!  That title alone likely spawned, or certainly greatly influenced, many exceptional video game developers that followed.

General / Re: What's your favorite game from each generation?
« on: May 11, 2020, 11:12:06 pm »
Most of my favorites emerged toward the end of each "generation," generally because capabilities improved. There are many other great games to consider throughout each gen, though.

1st Gen: either Stunt Cycle or Video Pinball (both dedicated Atari consoles)
2nd Gen: Mouse Trap (ColecoVision)
3rd Gen: The Legend of Zelda (NES)
4th Gen: Sonic the Hedgehog 3 (Genesis)
5th Gen: Panzer Dragoon Saga (Saturn)
6th Gen: God of War 2 (PS2)
7th Gen: Xenoblade Chronicles (Wii)
8th Gen: ?? (time will tell... expecting new greatness :) )
