General / Re: Most Rare -- VGC Edition
« on: November 21, 2022, 05:38:54 pm »
I tried importing my collection from price charting and it got messed up and now my collection has a ton of games I don't have. At some point I plan to go and start from scratch and get an accurate collection...

That being said I don't really have a lot of rare stuff but I am one of only 2 people with the Wu-Tang Clan PS1 controller here

I feel like almost all aspects of gaming are stagnant right now. In both large scale releases and indie games. Either we are retreading gameplay tropes from the 80s/90s with maybe a twist here or there or we are shooting for hyper-realism. I also feel like, for better or worse, we are losing genre. In much the same way as pop music, the idea of distinct genre is damn near non-existent, at least in triple-A releases. There always seems to be some form of open-worldness, cinematic story telling and light rpg elements. There is this feeling of safeness and sameness that permeates through the industry which produces solid, if a bit underwhelming or unexciting, games.

I don't know what or how this changes. VR seems like the logical next step but personally I'm not interested in that. I don't really even know what or if anything could be done to bring back that sense of wonder/discovery that seems not so distant. I think maybe we've just kinda seen it all at this point. I'm ready for someone to prove me wrong though.

Yeah I started watching a playthrough and it got to the point where I wanted to play myself enough that I didn't want to watch the playthrough anymore so I could play myself. Looks kinda weird but seems at least playable which is about all I can expect from a 3D Sonic game. Gonna try to play it over the next few days before my free time is eaten up by Pokemon Violet

Just got Sonic Frontiers on PS5

So I haven't been able to play it yet but I'm actually intrigued. I was originally interested in this game due to my morbid curiosity of terrible Sonic games. But turns out this one might be kinda ok? Looking forward to playing this with my daughter and having some fun exploring an actually functional 3D Sonic game.

Ha! Yep it was a gif with his hair blowing in the wind from Mega Man 2 I don't know what happened to him/how to get an avatar now. I probably haven't been here since my first daughter was born like 5 years ago... Also my collection is very out of date. I've unfortunately become a seller more than a buyer now. Damn kids  ;D

Hey guys! Long time no see! I came back to pimp out me and my friends YouTube channel (link in the YouTube thread) but thought I'd post and say hi! Don't think many people will remember me, I posted years ago but kinda took a break from collecting to be a full time dad. I have one 6 year old who I'm getting into gaming and now a 4 month who will be there soon enough!

Recommend The Encyclopedia of Game Machines: Consoles, Handhelds & Home Computers 1972-2005 by Winnie Forster.

I think this might be the winner as far as what I'm looking for but I appreciate all the suggestions from everyone. Definitely some interesting stuff to look into.

I don't know of any books or encyclopedias but there is a Youtuber channel called "The Gaming Historian" but you probally heard or watched his stuff but it's an interesting YouTube channel

https://www.youtube.com/user/mcfrosticles/featured

The Gaming Historian covers a lot of really interesting aspects of the gaming industry, as well as some pretty obscure consoles and accessories. I second this reccomendation.

Bitmap Books might also be of interest to you, although maybe not exactly what you're looking for since each book only covers a single console, not every console.

https://www.bitmapbooks.co.uk/

I have not watched the gaming historian so I will definitely keep that recommendation in my brain for later. And those bitmap books look awesome. Not exactly what I'm looking for but cool nonetheless. I'm starting to wonder if the thing I want exists at all. Wish I knew how to write a book  ;D

General / Looking for a good video game console history encyclopedia/book
« on: December 06, 2019, 06:35:45 pm »
Hello all, it has been a very long time since I posted here but I remember this being a very good/well informed community of collectors and I was wondering if there are any good books that give a detailed look at video game consoles/computers through history? The specifics I would be looking for would be for it to be chronological, a run down and history on the key people and significant games. And the more consoles the better. I have been listening to a podcast that will regularly reference consoles I've never heard of and it all is very interesting to me. I looked for books on Google but I was never able to really figure if the results I got were what I was looking for.

Anyways if anyone has any suggestions that I could further research I would appreciate it. If not then happy holidays and I hope you are all well!

So since this is what the Wii U should've been from the start Wii U owners get a discount right? Wishful thinking.
