Site Feedback / Personal rating/review option?
« on: September 22, 2015, 10:06:18 am »
I always liked these on discogs for example, to read up what some people think about certain albums, so why not games? For reviews of course you'd need some restrictions to avoid garbage/spam posts though, like a minimum of 100 characters or approval by an admin.

What do you think?

Site Feedback / Missing categories/mediums/formats
« on: September 22, 2015, 09:41:39 am »
I couldn't find an appropriate topic, sorry if one already exists!

I wanted to add in my Commodore 64 diskette collection, but this format does not seem to be in the database yet, only cassette tape & cartridge. I don't know about the US, but in most of EU (except the UK I think) diskettes were way more common than any other format. These ones (also called floppys):

Definately need a "Commodore 64 [5,25"-diskette]" option.

E: Probably need to distinguish between diskettes suitable for either C64 or C128 or both too.

Site Feedback / German rating (USK)?
« on: September 07, 2015, 04:14:56 am »
Hi,

I wanted to add in a german USK "Ab 18"-rating from 2002, but these don't seem to be included in the database yet.

Are regional ratings added in on request?

General / Harvest Moon series - any love? recommendations?
« on: August 30, 2015, 05:40:47 am »
Not sure if it fits here, the series spans from its retro beginnings until modern gaming today.

I was one of the few people who actually bought the SNES title in late '97/'98 when the N64 was already out because I just loved the concept back then and I still have a soft spot for the very limited and kind of crummy first installment. Later on I bought the Game Boy color one which unfortunately was heavily riddled with bugs and graphic glitches (as well as an inexcusable german translation), but it had some cool new features, like Mini games and a fish pond to tend to. "Back to Nature" for the PSX was pretty popular back then and I played it a fair bit, it introduced a lot of really neat features like cooking.

That was my last, but I was always kind of interested to check out the new ones. But there is a ton of new installments and spin offs after BTN, so I'm a bit unsure what to get. There is even a whole "Mystery Dungeon"-type rogue action RPG spin off series out there which I think is a combination so funny (plant the turnips and kill all the monsters!) that I might go and check these out. But what about the main series? You know, I just want to plant some veggies and expand my farm, no fancy lore stuff like "The Secret of the Holy Melody Tree Island" or whatever. Anyone out here who followed the series until today and can recommend some titles?

Classic Video Games / Super Game Boy game cartridges for Super Famicom?
« on: August 24, 2015, 07:22:01 am »
I've seen a couple of those and they all seem to be exclusive to the japanese Super Famicom. They seem to be regular games but with a Game Boy cartridge slot on top. What's its use?

For example I was interested in the RPG Tsukuru series and found out the second one has this type:

I know there also was an RPG Tsukuru on Game Boy, so does that mean I need the corresponding Game Boy cart to make this work at all? Or maybe you can get extra stuff by connecting these two versions, like for example Metroid Fusion with Metroid Prime via link? I'd like to know before I jump on to this.

This depressing thread is for stories of how you got unlucky: games that arrived broken or not at all, terrific one of a kind deals that you missed by a hair, finding out that your super mint & complete game you paid top dollar for turned out to be in terrible conditions or incomplete, opened a parcel with a paper cutter and cut the outer game box in the process, your game shelf broke down and ruined half of your well kept collection, bought a rarity and received a shitty russian repro - all of your collecting mishaps that made your heart sank.

One of my most memorable ones happened some years ago. My mom is a regular flea market goer and knows I'm a game nut so she casually looks after my main console interests. So after she attended one of the bigger ones in my area she told me of this guy who had a couple of loose SNES carts and one of them had a price tag of 10€, looked like I might be into it: Demon's Crest. She did not know that this one was one of my most desired games and a loose cart of the PAL version already sold for more than ten times on ebay easily, so you can see I was more than a little excited. Fortunately the flea market continued on the following day, there was hope the guy would still be there, and so of course I went together with her.

Long story short: We did find the guy again ( :D ), he happened to still have the game ( 8) ) so I asked him about the price with sweating palms, hardly able to contain myself.

Guy: "Oh you know, this one really is super super rare, you should check out ebay, it sells for like 200€. I can sell this one to you for 120€. What do you think?"

Me: :) ->  :-\ -> :( ->  :'( "No, thanks..."

Turns out, the guy apparantly got the great idea to look up what he's actually selling just the day before and found out that Demon's Crest was way more worth than just 10€. I could have kicked myself that I did not went there earlier! My mom kind of felt bad about it but I told her it's no big deal, shit happens, etc.. However deep down I felt heartbroken, haha.

Besides, who tries to sell a fucking loose cart for 120€ on a flea market of all places anyway? Moron...

Hardware and Tech / Hooking up 80ies japanese consoles (PAL)
« on: August 07, 2015, 07:18:29 am »
I was always interested in getting a Famicom system with the floppy drive, also I'm kind of interested in the Epoch Cassette Vision.  The power supply shouldn't be an issue with a converter/adaptor right? I'm really concerned about video output issues though. I've seen that these use a cable with two metal prongs attached to it to fix in with tiny screws (I guess?) which I don't think my 90ies CRT TV got any input for. What should I be looking after for this to work? There is some documentation for US NTSC users but I have found none for european PAL regions. Any help is highly appreciated!

Modern Video Games / Final Fantasy 7 remake

I know it's it's old news by now but what are your thoughts? I used to really long after a remake of one of my all time favorites and naturally the trailer looks amazing. But I don't know what to think about the "drastic combat changes" that apparently will happen in the remake. Of course the combat system of the original appears terribly dated and slow now (sans the materia/slot system, I still think it's really fun), so it's no surprise they are working on that. I'm just afraid they will mess it up, like into some sort of action/round-based hybrid which I hate with a passion.

That game is probably the only reason I'm considering the PS4 but I guess I'll hold off until I've seen some legit game footage.
