Modern Video Games / Star Fox Zero/Thoughts?
« on: July 27, 2019, 12:37:32 pm »
So I've been reading about Star Fox Zero on the WiiU because I'm somewhat interested in it, and it's cheap to get. The takeaway seems to be that it's divisive to the extreme, the crux of it being the controls and how unweildy they are.

So, I'd like to hear about some personal opinions from the members here that have played the game. Did you enjoy it/do you like it in general? Are the controls such a huge sticking point like the Internet claims? What are the best/worst aspects of the game?

Site Feedback / Where is the edit history button?
« on: December 10, 2018, 10:17:43 am »
Maybe this has been addressed already, but I noticed a few weeks ago that the button at the top of the site which lets you view a list of your edits (approved/rejected) is missing.

Actually, the same thing happened to the button that notifies you of new personal messages.

General / Your unpopular gaming opinions.
« on: April 03, 2018, 02:51:55 pm »
I saw a similar thread on another video game site, and I have to confess that I'm morbidly curious about your "confessions". So basically, I want to read about your positive/negative opinions about video games and gaming in general that the majority of gamers do not agree on.

You can list as few or as many as you want. Vent that bottled-up frustration, folks.

-I can't, for the life of me, get into any of the Fallout games. I find them too focused on stat-fiddling, and their main storylines are boring to me.

-I cannot stand the Elder Scrolls series. Great memes, sure, but that's about it.

-While I enjoy fighting games, I'm more interested in the character designs than the actual mechanics.

-I enjoy the 3D mario games more than the 2D ones.

-The Nintendo 64 is terribly overrated. Its controller is an abomination despite the ground-breaking analog stick.

-Final Fantasy VIII is better than VII.

-While not better than RE4, RE5 is one of the most enjoyable Resident Evil games I've ever played.

-I don't like the roguelike/rogue-lite and 4X genres at all. Procedural generation isn't as great as some people seem to think.

-The Wii U is an excellent console, and at the moment, better than the Nintendo Switch.

-The Xbox as a console family and the Xbox brand as a whole gets nothing but scoffs from me. The brand and console(s) created solely because Microsoft wanted some of that "console game money" back in the early 2000s. Leave it to Microsoft to be as unimaginative as possible and basically branding the letter X soaked in Mountain Dew and dudebro high fives. But hey, the PlayStation brand needed a competitor from the west, right?

Modern Video Games / Tips for Dark Souls III for a beginner of sorts?
« on: January 27, 2018, 03:51:09 pm »
You could say that I'm a sort of a newcomer to the Soulsborne series, even though I own all the games in the series. Despite owning all of the games and having played them all, the only one I've ever completed is Bloodborne. Having said all that, I haven't played the mainline Souls games all that much despite trying to get into them several times in the past.

Basically Demon's Souls kicked my ass from the get-go, Dark Souls handed my ass to me at the second boss, and Dark Souls II: SotFS just laughed at my pitiful attempts way before the first boss even. So I recently got my copy of Dark Souls III: The Fire Fades Edition, so I decided that I'm going to really try my best at it. "My best" apparently, isn't good enough. I guess my problem is that I'm not accustomed to playing defensively after Bloodborne. What I need is tips to what to keep an eye on in terms of classes or playstyle, since DS3's first boss seems to wipe the floor with me after he transforms.

I also can not reliably kick for the life of me. For what it's worth, I always play the first class (Knight I believe).

I can already hear to cacophony of the Dark Souls master race ready to swarm me; berating me for not "gitting gud" enough, liking Dark Souls II, not really understanding what "Praise the Sun" entails and generally playing the games out-of-order. All this despite loving the hell out of Bloodborne, and understanding its mechanics really well.

Video Game Database Discussion / Yakuza: Dead Souls PAL barcode rejection
« on: January 07, 2018, 04:39:39 pm »
https://vgcollect.com/item/79842

I submitted a change to this item's barcode information with 5055277015887. The change was rejected with "information already on file". However, I can't personally find any Yakuza Dead Souls entries that have this barcode already set. Can someone clue me in as to what is going on?

Hardware and Tech / New Nintendo 3DS XL vs. 2DS XL
« on: August 21, 2017, 10:35:38 am »
So, I've been thinking of getting a Nintendo handheld after many decades (the last Nintendo handheld I owned was the original GameBoy). Needless to say, the 3DS exclusives seem to be quite interesting. My question basically boils down to this: Should I get the New 3DS XL or the New 2DS XL?

From what I understand, the only real difference is that 2DS XL does not have the stereoscopic 3D effect in it, but it can still play all 3DS games just fine. Are there some 3DS games that really benefit from the 3D effect, or is it basically just a nice little gimmick that has no bearing on actual gameplay?

Are you happy with the 3DS? Would you recommend it to someone like me, who has never even held a 3DS, let alone played with one?

Video Game Database Discussion / Publisher/developer listing format
« on: June 15, 2017, 02:16:50 pm »
I apologize in advance if this has been discussed in the past.

Having now added and/or edited several hundred enties in this database, one issue/question has been bugging me quite a bit: How developer and publisher information is listed, or rather, what is the right way to name a developer or a publisher in this database. What I mean is, should developers and publishers be listed using their entire full name, or the more common way people refer to them.

For example, the developer Gust. Should VGCollect list it as "GUST Co., Ltd." or just "Gust"? In the same vein, "Retro Studios, Inc." or just "Retro Studios"?
What about remasters, then? Should only the studio that was responsible for a given remaster be listed as the developer or should the original developer be given credit as well? For example, the God of War remasters. Should the developer credit be only given to Bluepoint Games, or should it be listed as "Bluepoint Games / Sony Santa Monica" or something similar?

On the publisher side, for example, should VGCollect list exactly which arm of Sony Computer Entertainment published a given game, i.e. Sony Computer Entertainment America/Europe/etc. or just "Sony Computer Entertainment"?

Personally, I would like to see the Incs, Ltds and such gone.

So the Wii U's european PAL library has a considerable number of games that have a catalog/item number ending with UKV. Is this the official way to distinguish the UK version of the game(s)? I've seen that some site editors edit game titles to include [UK] in the title, yet some games that have the UKV item number do not have the [UK] addition. Why is this? These UKV games are also sold in some European countries outside the UK.

What is the stance that VGCollect takes on this? Is the UKV release of a given game considered the base/standard European PAL release?

I've been wondering about what games have lengthy additional installations after you first start the game from the PS4 menu or so-called "stealth installs".

The only two examples I know of are Grand Theft Auto V and Bloodborne. In GTAV, you have to sit though a 35-minute installation before you can play.

In case of Bloodborne, you can't load your save game until the disc has "stealth installed" the game data. Apparently after a fresh start, the game only gives you data for the opening area and installs the rest in the background as you play. So if you have an save game for one of the later areas, the game keeps you in the main menu until the installation has finished. Bloodborne doesn't even clear tell the player that it's doing something in the background.

Any other examples like these in the PS4 game library? Either the stealth install kind or the GTAV kind?

Video Game Database Discussion / Light Gun Shooter genre - rename?
« on: December 09, 2016, 05:17:27 pm »
Apologies if this has been discussed in the past, but I would like to see the Light Gun Shooter genre renamed to something more indicative of the actual nature of the game. A more on point genre name would be "Railshooter" or something similar.

Games that support actual lightguns these days no longer exist and older games and systems that support actual lightguns only work on CRT monitors/TVs, as far I understand the tech anyway. Besides, the lightgun is only an input device and the actual game mechanics use rigid, predetermined paths (i.e. it's on rails). Well, you know what I mean.

Anyways, if there someone who knows more, please weigh in.
