Classic Video Games / Video Game Cartridges and End Labels
« on: November 18, 2019, 01:32:53 pm »
After purchasing my Famicom off eBay a couple weeks ago, a few of the carts I bought separate from the system itself arrived within the past week or so. Since these were early Bandai carts, when they used their own design for them, they have end labels to tell what the game is if it were stacked on a shelf. It's a shame that most third-party companies (besides Konami, Koei, and Bandai off the top of my head) never used their own style to allow for end labels. More to the point of what I made this topic to discuss, though, I realized that the US and Europe had it easy with their cartridge designs allowing for an end label. With the Super NES/Famicom, non-US carts seem not to have end labels, and the N64 doesn't have any end labels at all, regardless of region! When sorting games, this must be really annoying. Considering I grew up with an SNES I'm used to the end labels being there, so not having them seems kind of... alien to me. What about the rest of you guys? Anyone else share my sentiments on the matter?

Video Game Database Discussion / Doki Doki Panic - Naming Confusion?
« on: April 01, 2019, 01:21:26 pm »
https://vgcollect.com/item/19431

The item found above sort of confuses me. The listing only says Doki Doki Panic, whereas the game's full title is Yume Koujou Doki Doki Panic. Why is that? Is it assuming that people are only going to search Doki Doki Panic instead of the full name?

Modern Video Games / How much longer do you think the 3DS has?
« on: February 27, 2019, 12:50:14 pm »
Since Pokémon Sword and Shield were announced for Switch during the Pokémon direct this morning, I personally think that at this point, once they come out late this year the 3DS will be nothing short of dead.

Now, there's a couple reasons why I think this is the case.

  • Mario Kart 7, while a good game in its own right, is now dwarfed by Mario Kart 8 Deluxe.
  • Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. Need I say any more about this one?
  • Pokemon Sword and Shield - Mind you, I know it's too early to tell, but I feel like interest in the system might wane because of this.
  • Super Mario Party.

Granted, I know some people used to think the same thing for the GameCube, Wii and Wii U but, Melee aside (which itself has been dethroned from Evo this year), the emulation and homebrew scene are probably keeping the system slightly alive. To be fair, I'm also a bit pessimistic sometimes so I always jump to the worst possible outcomes. Regardless, what about you guys? What do you think? Does the 3DS stand much of a chance anymore now that the Switch has a lot of games on it worth playing? How much longer (in terms of years) does the 3DS have?

Hardware and Tech / PC Advice (Building a retro Windows 98 SE rig)
« on: December 12, 2018, 10:06:47 am »
I don't want to go TOO in-depth with this as I don't want to seem like I'm tooting my own horn, but my dad and I have been scrounging parts from some of our old computers to see if we can build a rig for myself so I can play all my vintage Windows games (from around 1995 to late 2001, early 2002) on actual hardware, and we've got a lot of stuff that seems to be good, but I'm more concerned of upkeep. If I wanted a motherboard that would last pretty well, with AGP and PCI as I don't plan on using any ISA cards, what motherboard should I go with? The current motherboard I have is one that uses a slot-1 processor (which I have an Intel Pentium III in right now) but I feel like those might be hard to come by, and think that a normal surface-mount board will be easier to keep in good working order. Mind you, I'm going to be installing Windows 98 SE on this, so I don't expect to get much out of it, but the current board I have only supports up to 324 MB RAM, and I was hoping to at least have 512 MB. 1 GB is too much for a computer like this, I feel. If you guys had any ideas or suggestions, I'd really appreciate the help.~

General / The PS1 Classic, and why I am kinda unhappy about it.
« on: November 09, 2018, 09:10:26 am »
I know that this is subjective, and that some people are looking forward to the PS1 classic, but yesterday I read about the things that people have reported about the console already, at least stuff that seems to be true.

For those that didn't hear, these are the points in question.

  • Apparently the PS1 Classic is a generic Raspberry Pi running a custom frontend, built on the source code of the Pi version of the emulator PCSX-ReArmed.
  • Each game only allows you to have one save slot, meaning that you are limited to one save game per title.
  • Some games seem to be using incorrect versions, as some bring up SCEA and some bring up SCEE. Because of this, some people theorize that they took random ISOs without checking what region or version they were.
  • The main menu is uninspired, at least compared to the NES and SNES Mini. It doesn't even have music on the menu.

To me, this seems like they're making the PS1 classic just a cash grab on the heels of the NES and SNES mini. I don't know if I'm more perturbed that they're being a bit lazy with the thing or if I find it funny that even Mario All-Stars for the Wii, which was literally just the SNES version slapped onto a Wii disc, at least had the decency to use the Virtual Console emulator.

Site Feedback / Pico - Black image
« on: January 18, 2018, 11:36:37 am »
So when I tried to upload a box for B-Fighter Kabuto on Pico, the image showed up as just a black box. Would someone be able to find a different image of the front cover to replace it with?

Hardware and Tech / Best extension cables for Dreamcast
« on: May 06, 2016, 08:55:33 am »
So after I received the Sega Fishing Controller and copy of Sega Bass Fishing I ordered for my Dreamcast a few days ago, I realized that the cords on the Dreamcast (both hookup cords and controller cords) are way too short. I'm currently planning an event for my high school graduation that I may need to get extension cables and cords for, but I'm not sure what cords to get or if Sega made first-party cables. Does anyone know the best ones to get for the system and if sega had made any first party extensions?
